People say lots about shows from 3.0, 2.0, 1.0, and there are magic moments throughout all of them. But, you sit down, do what you need, put on decent headphones and hear this jam. You find anything, anything else in their musical history that comes anywhere close to this, and I'll buy you a drink and ask you to tell me why. I won't disagree, but I'll be VERY interested to hear your thoughts and arguments. The band peaked this night, and in this song, particularly, for many reasons. The skill, lilt, deftness, the soul, it's all here. This is the pinnacle of a career uniting an dblending and coming through clearly. Musical perfection. Nirvana. Whatever you call it. This was, and will forever be, the greatest night in Phish's history. Fucking blessed moments here people. Fucking blessed.
I'd like to sit down with ya and have a drink with this jam rippin, then discuss everything from 83' to present. I could talk about this band until the sun comes up and then watch the wavy gravy morning sky listening to a prime divided sky!!
There are definitely some better jams than this throughout their career IMO. This has a lot more meandering than some of the other 'all time' jams. For example, compare this to the Boise '99 AC/DC Bag or the Went Gin. But this is great and super fun nonetheless, and Cypress is the pinnacle of their career given the combination of the event and their playing at that point.
Frankly, I'm of the persuasion - and totally my opinion - that anyone who truly understands Phish knows that this jam is the most astounding display of telepathic, improvisational communication ever demonstrated. For God's sake, even the camera man at 20:53 could not keep still and is bobbing in time. This jam is so great, even the video feed had to cut itself off and go bawl like a baby on the ground somewhere. I am so thankful that I was there to witness this live. I could not believe what I was hearing. As Andy Gadiel once referenced, I felt the "awe and dread."
@@jonnymac6939 The best part about it was that in person, right on the rail, the balls that the band had released were propogating through the audience. So, here's this floaty jam and when I looked up I saw a sea of dropping and falling balloons. It was perfection.
Just listened to this for the first time in a few years and it brought me to tears. Absolutely one of the most memorable weekends in history. I will never forget that red sky sunrise while wading in the velvet sea played. And then here comes the sun on the pa as we all shuffled out with our minds melted. Bliss
The most fun I’ve ever had. I feel forever blessed that I was one of the 75k who spent their celebration of the new millennium at Big Cypress that night.
The whole thing is great but from 16:50 on ... I can listen to each contributor, from Page to Mike, Trey, etc, and find it just perfect just in it's own right. But I do really love what Page is putting out until the end. Just gorgeous.
Got damn 18.5 years later and the last 6-8 mins still gives me goosebumps and brings tears to my eyes. I’m a grown man and don’t give a fuck. Phish makes me tear up and emotional from how powerful their music is. The four of them together are a unit and wo one of them it would never be the same. I wish everyone was able to get it, but I’m just glad I was able to.
12:09 is where this shit just begins to melt me to the core of my soul. Trey sets this amazing background loop, and then out of nowhere this beautiful octave jam takes place.
yeah that's the start of maybe my favorite jam ever. thanks for qualifying it with some musical terms. i always like when someone can technically explain what they're doing during jams I really enjoy
@@lindsaywren4696 yes! Deer Creek Gumbo 03 was the last super good jam I ever heard. (Went to Star Lake then IT and that was my final show) Also I won tickets on jambase for that night a Deer Creek and it was the final time I ever dosed. (Rolled at star Lake and both nights of IT) AND I called Gumbo because of the good version they played there in 98
Yeah that is so smooth: my crowd sourced cd of this part where Trey is playing on his keyboard, you can hear the crowd cheering so happy and total wave of collective crowd exctasy. It’s the best.
Those first 2 guitar licks back in from that time stamp are my favorite sounds ever created from phish, and the interplay between page and trey throughout this whole section is incredible
Loved this jam. The energy carried me all the way through sunrise. I made it and stayed up the whole time while thousands laid down and slept. We were all still there though!
This show was one of my favorite times in life . 18 hr in gridlock did not matter. We had a bbq in the fast lane of route 70 . See u guys on tour peace
Never heard a good clean PHISH sound until tonite! This 1999 Big Cypress Shows have to be the best Phish shows I have ever heard!BAND IS ON A WHOLE NOTHER LEVEL FOR SURE!Phish u guys are the best most talented band out there!Sound quality is out of this world!Love ya Phish! Thanks for all what u do!Out Hot Carl!
Just such an epic jam on an epic evening. This gives me goosebumps everytime. Ooooh that night. Best night of my life. Better than getting married, better than having kids, and I even caught 2 out of 3 kids with my own hands in 3 home births. That experience can’t touch big cypress or this jam. 🕺🔥😂😍🍩
I know what I was on during this show but what were Phish on? I mean 6+ hours if some of if not the great jams ever. The whole thing - leaving -3 degree Massachusetts and driving down to FLA straight shot no stops! The traffic the death!! This jam / after midnight reprise / sand / rock n roll slow down jam / 2001 / cross eyed / cheesecake!! So good I wanna go back in time.
Will never forget this. RIP Chris Weidman who I shared this weekend with(and a 24 hour greyhound bus trip from DC>Ft Lauderdale, and back)as a 16 year old, and so many other phish memories. Love you always buddy and I miss you alot. Cheesecake man. (16:50 tears)
Was there, and probably stating the obvious, but it was the best three days of my life. I was there with wonderful friends and it truly lived up to my extremely high expectations. Everyone I met wanted it to be a magical moment in history, so they went out of their way to be totally cool to each other, and the result was a vibe comparable to dead lot. It was truly a special weekend.
the last 6 minutes of this is so beautiful and absolutely amazing!! however much i loved summer tour 2016 it sucks that you don't see something like a big cypress dwd anymore..a true masterpiece!!
I know this is a ridiculous comment considering this version of DWD is perfect, but I kinda wish they had stayed on that rift at 2:40 for like another 10 min before moving into the jam. Oh also, I WAS THERE!
Hate to say it, but playing an instrument while on psychedelics is terrifying and usually sloppy as heck. Especially in front of 80k people. They most definitely were not tripping.
the song "Phishing in the Southland" a song about falling in love at Big Cypress, can be found on you tube or facebook at Sean Dobson Hippie music. peace n love you all!

+Rob McNaughton Been my go to Jam for years. For the magnitude of the moment makes it even more sublime..total control..

I'm happy to know I'm not the only one who feels the same way.
This is arguably the greatest phish jam of all time, in my humble opinion.
We were there! Annapolis Maryland to Big Cypress! 💙😇💙
First day of tour! I'm grinning ear to ear listening to this! Cant wait to share this feeling with thousands of others!
Amazing nite. Unfortunately, just before 12 I took ketamine for the first time. Made for an odd first hour or two.
Honestly sounds like the best possible choice unless you planned on standing up
This moment changed my life forever, no joke...

Yes it truly took me a beat to realize it was the pa not the band playing here comes the sun, was in the zone
CHEESECAKE 💜

i dont know why the notes Trey plays between 5:52 and 6:08 always get to me but they do and thats why i love this band

This was the best way to start off a late night set... Best concert ever. Nothing has ever compared.
I was gonna subscribe, but y’all had exactly 420 subs at the time.
