Hi there! I just watched this and want to add some clarifying points: 1) It’s been stated, but I want to clarify this for the viewers: Acrid is NOT a Lemurian, despite its appearance. This is a common misconception that has also been disproven by the devs in the official discord server. 2) It is heavily implied that Void Fiend is the one who broke through the void cells and also freed Acrid. We can see this through its log, stating how that, for some reason, its powers were left unrestrained, so it took the opportunity to break out of containment. This is what the void was panicking about; their own powerful experiment breaking out of containment and causing extreme harm to them. 3) We do not free Acrid. This is also a misconception of getting gameplay combined with lore. When we enter the cells, it is stated how we are “opening the vents” and that things are being released into the void cell. We are opening the vents essentially to let that “void fog” that harms us out, and to clear out the remaining parts. We finish the cells up and finish stabilizing them, also stated by the game. We also see that we enter the cells after because if you look around, you can find the remainins of dead void reavers, meaning something already killed things in here and messed up the void cells. Acrid’s log states that it left the cells when something else caused the breakout, aka point 2. As far as we know, Acrid never actually met the operatives of Risk of Rain 2. I hope this adds some clarification and some clarity about the game’s lore. I’m willing to help answer any other questions
Thanks for the clarifications! I'll pin this so that it can help anyone who still has some questions after the video! I learned something myself: I've never heard about that 3rd point. I think it's interesting looking back and hearing that Acrid is the only returning survivor. Now with Returns, technically Artificer can be considered the same.
Can they? I haven't unlocked the artificers' log yet, but I thought they were like loader or commando where they just have the same job as the ones in ror2
@@DeadlyMouse7 I haven't seen her log yet either, but her death animation has her getting crystalized, similar to the state we see her in during the second game. Implies that she was trapped on the planet this way, likely leading to Newt finding her and placing her in his shop. Not sure if the log can confirm or deny that either, but it makes some sense and it's just my theory on it.
So basically: Best doggo gets imprisoned by humans, gets rescued and subsequently bonked by a human who previously imprisoned him. Doggo is amused by the human’s power, and proceeds to outskill Providence with acidic hive magic. Doggo then goes AFK on a planet and vibes until a void reaver detains it, and the process restarts while acrid beats up mithrix. Doggo just wanna chill :(
Personally I think that Acrid sadly never got time alone between games, since we're sent looking for the Contact Light in Ror2, the ship the survivors "escaped on," it's my theory that with Providence defeated the Void Creatures contained the ship, its contents, and any of the survivors trying to escape. Now that Providence has been weakened by the survivors from Ror1 the Void Creatures could contain him. This is why they appear on the surface of the planet in Ror2, Mithrix is on the moon and unable to stop them (Although they do contain him once you defeat him, now with both Gods of the planet dead they can contain the entire planet bit by bit). The capture of the Contact Light by the Void Creatures could explain the disappearance of the ship, survivors, the imprisonment of Acrid, the creation of void items after they were taken from the ship (potentially), and maybe the Void Fiend being the Commando from Ror1. Just some theories and stuff I think when looking into the games lore, great video :).
You should probably update this due to RORR suggesting that Acrid is a genetic experiment known as a chimera among others is the smartest is being shipped to earth for further study *edit: still a good video that I’ve watched countless times👌
These videos are great! I've always been really curious about Acrid and his relation the survivors and the void, as well as just learning stuff about the game lore from your other videos, keep up the great work!
Thank you very much! Happy to hear you enjoyed! There will be 2 more Risk of Rain videos coming before I move to another game (at least until another expansion comes out), so there will be more in the future! Thanks for the support! :)
I think the reason the contact light deviated off course is because of mithrix… I cant remember which but, one of the item longs tell us that the contact light was told by and unknown contact (mithrix) to go to the planet. This is because the contact light had a primordial teleporter which mithrix could use to escape the moon. Providence downed the ship to prevent mithrix’s usage of the teleporter to escape the moon
I'm wary of assigning any specifics around the Contact Light's course adjustment just yet. I can believe that Mithrix had something to do with it (because of the very things you've just mentioned), and it's probably the strongest case, but there could be others too! Hopefully we get some answers eventually! Thanks for watching!
@@SquatchGamingChannel yeah i think until next DLC (whenever that will be) may give more insight on ‘Her’ and/or the red plain maybe. But apart from ‘Her’ or mithrix, imo it seems highly unlikely that it would be anyone else, but ‘she’ is already dead which is why i rule it out to be only mithrix
I completely agree. Some people have theorized that Kurskan *might* have had something to do with it which I can see, but it also seems unlikely. It could have been redirected by someone in UES too, but how they would have heard of the planet and known where to go, I can't say. Even though I think whatever happened most likely involved Mithrix, I'd rather just wait until more details come out (if they do) before saying anything for sure! Lol.
There's room within the lore for a potentially much darker version of the events for Acrid in RoR2. It's possible that Acrid was never freed at all, but is simply living out a delusion created by the Void itself. A delusion of escape and revenge, and eventually freedom. In time it might find itself growing old and dying, or falling victim to some strong opponent, only to wake up a prisoner once more realizing that the life it just lead wasn't real. That all this time, it has remained a prisoner of the Void, and very well may continue to be for the rest of eternity.
I enventually bought the game after 2 friends keep recommending it to me. Out of every characters, I only played Acrid and I've beat Eclipse 8 in only 55h of game time. He's so unique compared to other characters, his poison is strong but the fact that I'm able to yeet myself into ennemies or across the map is perfect. I wanted to know more about my favourite crocodile, thank you for this video!
I like to think that the last bit of his lore alludes to his destiny and the fate of his people he is forever meant to be a prisoner but never to stay contained
Some people were thinking that the Commando from the first game could have been detained by the Void Reavers and become the Void Fiend. Seemed like a natural way of explaining what happened to the Survivor, but the Developers even shot that down. They really don't want people to connect the members of the Safe Travels to the Survivor(s) of the Contact Light. Lol. Thanks for watching!
SQUATCH I AM SO HAPPY YOU ARE COVERING RISK OF RAIN!!! I finally got around to playing Hotline Miami six months ago and I fell in love with it, and discovered your videos and enjoyed it even more. Now I start playing ROR a month ago and you’re here to make yet another game and its story even better for me. Thank you!!!

I don't have any plans for an Artificer video right now, but if enough people are interested in it, maybe I'll make one! Thanks for the request! And Thanks for watching!
A little disappointed that you didn’t state why void reavers capture and imprison things. Void reavers contain beings of both power or importance, they will only chase you in game if you either A. become strong enough or B. Kill a god (providence or mithrix). Acrid as either being involved in the death of providence or simply became strong enough as an invasive species of petricor 5 caught the attention of the void reavers which led to his imprisonment
I didn't want to talk about the Void too much since I'd already made a video talking about it, and didn't want to take the spotlight away from Acrid. Wanted the story to be from its perspective, not the Void Reavers, if that makes sense. Hope it wasn't too bad and that you enjoyed nonetheless! Thanks for watching!
@@SquatchGamingChannel I mean it’s fine, just I could definitely see people being confused about it and in my opinion bringing it up shines even more of a spotlight onto acrid as it shows how influential he is to petricor V and those around him. Also this event is evidence that he was involved in the death of providence or maybe he just got 10 stacks of crit goggles and oneshot everything.
He's got a bit of a learning curve since he's melee based instead of ranged based, but he's really fun when you get the hang of things! Thanks for watching!
Considering how much obtaining IPs can mess up a series, I hope Gearbox has a head on their shoulders such that they remove acrid for ROR3, or had a damn good reason to have him around
Okay, i know im a casual Squatch fan and Dead Cells enjoyer but the universe decided to recommend me this video the day I not only bought Risk of Rain but right after I finished playing for a bit. I didnt even Search anything about this game. How does UA-cam know?
I do understand this interpretation of acrid’s lore, but due to the gameplay loop that could confuse the canon-ness of the game, I much prefer the idea of an uncontainable creature that only yearned for being left alone. This is perhaps the story I would have presented: -Acrid, prisoner/cargo of Contact Light -Providence attacks -Acrids containment is sent to the planet -Acrid breaks out of the container -with an acute knowledge, acrid understands technology and is able to operate the remains of Contact Light in order to escape (While I do think that it’s pretty wholesome to think about acrid in “retirement” on petrichor V, it’s clearly shown that he’s at least on the ship as it flies away) -With Providence dead, the void reavers have a new found freedom to roam the planet, and go after the being that it has never seen before: Acrid (This is with my interpretation that Acrid is the only of its kind, perhaps a genetically designed creature, an isolated mutation, or perhaps an aberration created by a cosmic hiccup) -After the void reavers capture acrid, it is apparent that the void cells are not perfect, as acrid remains aware of its surroundings -The void fiend escapes, causing panic and destabilization of the void fields -Acrid, takes this opportunity to slip out of containment, and back into petrichor V, where it then begins the gameplay loop of RoR2.
Finally, a video discussing the powerful poison puppy who pounds and punches punks harder than a butcher pounds meat and feasts on frail flesh while munching on a pice of beef
i watched this video with no idea who you were and then went on a hotline miami lore bender all day, with out even realizing that i watched you this morning
That's crazy! Lol. Yeah, things are a little different now than they were when I was making HLM Videos. Lol. But I'm happy to hear that you found something you liked! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch some of the stuff I've got! :)
There actually is a bit of lore we learn in Risk of Rain Returns about Acrid This video predates Returns so you can't be blamed of course According to returns, Acrid isn't a member of some crocodilian species akin to a toxic lemurian variant, he's actually an artificial lifeform called a chimera made from combining the DNA of multiple other creatures. He doesn't have more than 5% DNA of any given creature, which is why he appears so alien. Also it was humans that made Acrid and they were sending him to earth to further study and test it. Now this is just speculation on my part, but if you notice in ror1 and Returns, Acrid is red. In ror2 he's purple. I believe the purple discoloration of ror2 Acrid is a result of the same void corruption the Void Fiend suffers, albeit to a much milder degree.
I have a theory about the void fiend, and its relation to acrid. The void fiend is the survivor from the first game. Think. Why would this “corrupted” thing have a helmet shaped head, and why does this humanoid have the same general shape and size (I’m going off of looks in the select screen) as the commando? One thing I’ve noticed is that we always see the “survivor” from risk of rain 1 as the commando, at least in most of the footage that people use in relation to the ending.
New subscriber here. Squatch Gaming I'm confused I thought this game is a sorta like metrovania with rogue like elements? But in this video I saw 3D shooting? Does this game two play styles? Thanks for this video. I just heard of it 25th december on a website which showed that next year we will get a updated version coming to consoles. I want to get this for the switch. If it's the 3D version then I get it for my Xbox series X
Hey, Muhammed! Thanks for subscribing and watching everything that you have! I appreciate it! So Risk of Rain is not a metroidvania at all. It's a rougelike shooter where the longer you play, the more difficult the game becomes. While the stage designs are all set, your progression through them is random (there are technically two stages that can be "Level 1" and each of them has two designs, so it's random which one you'll get - It's like that for all "Levels" of the game), and the drops/monsters you face in them are random as well. You'll play until you beat the boss at the last level or until you die (you can loop through the levels an unlimited amount of time, so "in theory" you could play forever). Risk of Rain 1 was the first one released and is entirely in 2D. This is available on PC and consoles at the moment, and I haven't really heard of any kind of difference between them. Risk of Rain 2 came out several years later, and moved the series into a 3D Environment. This is available on PC and consoles; however, I've heard the console port of Risk of Rain 2 is pretty poor. I've never played the console version myself, so I don't know for sure what it's like, but just be warned that if you get it for console, you may not have a great time with it. Additionally, earlier this year, the developers released an an expansion DLC for Risk of Rain 2 named Survivors of the Void. This added new content to the game. *This is currently only available on PC*. The Console ports have not received this content as of yet, so that may be another factor to consider if you're going to get Risk of Rain 2 on Console. The New Version recently announced, Risk of Rain Returns, is functionally a *remake* of the first game, but according to the Developers, it's going to have so much added to it, it's going to be "a whole new game." Risk of Rain 1 will not only receive an update to its graphics, but it will have a bunch of new content added as well as system/gameplay tweaks. The developers have given us a bit of an idea of what will be added and what the game looks like in a "Dev Thoughts" they made which you can watch here: ua-cam.com/video/PivWxDUHlhw/v-deo.html We'll find out more about the game throughout 2023 (which is also when it is supposed to release) Hope that helps, Muhammed. If you have any questions, feel free to ask away! Again, thanks so much for watching anything you have! I really appreciate it! :)
There's some that have enough lore to do videos on (I even started working on one for Kur-Skan), but I never followed through with making any. I don't currently have any plans to revisit the series, but maybe I will when Risk of Rain Returns comes out later this year. We'll see Thanks for watching!
Is there a lot of lore on Loader? I don't remember there being a lot when I read through the logs a while back, but if there's something there, and enough people are interested, I'd consider it! Thanks for watching!
I know the video is pretty old but i do want to throw out a thought. I could just be me seeing waaaaay to far into shit but i do think Acrid is free and it may be stupid but its because of one change in his design from 1 to 2. This is why I love acrid so much, mainly because I also want to be alone more often than not, and also lizard dog go brr
I like my alone time too! I'm an introvert though, so not too crazy for me. Lol.
Thanks for watching!
@@SquatchGamingChannel Thank you for making a lore video on .y favorite character in risk of rain history 😊
@@Mintybird ohh
So basically:
Best doggo gets imprisoned by humans, gets rescued and subsequently bonked by a human who previously imprisoned him. Doggo is amused by the human’s power, and proceeds to outskill Providence with acidic hive magic. Doggo then goes AFK on a planet and vibes until a void reaver detains it, and the process restarts while acrid beats up mithrix.
Doggo just wanna chill :(
I like to think that the captain welcomed rex, acrid, and the void fiend onto the ship for the part in aiding the ground troops.
Devs said that the commando from ror1 is M.I.A
The void fiend was just one of the commandos you find dead on ror2
we weren’t sent looking for the ship, we were looking for the cargo and any survivors
Another fact about Acrid that is almost completely unknown: He is a cute poison doggo that i love
Knowing Acrid is safe makes me happy
You should probably update this due to RORR suggesting that Acrid is a genetic experiment known as a chimera among others is the smartest is being shipped to earth for further study
*edit: still a good video that I’ve watched countless times👌
This gives me a new found respect for the Void Fiend, I will definitely give it another try and see how I like them
Plot twist: he’s just a dumb doggo who hates the void who can’t get a rest there’s no deep lore, just a lean dog
I think the reason the contact light deviated off course is because of mithrix…
I cant remember which but, one of the item longs tell us that the contact light was told by and unknown contact (mithrix) to go to the planet.
Lol.
@@SquatchGamingChannel fair enough
There's room within the lore for a potentially much darker version of the events for Acrid in RoR2. It's possible that Acrid was never freed at all, but is simply living out a delusion created by the Void itself. A delusion of escape and revenge, and eventually freedom. In time it might find itself growing old and dying, or falling victim to some strong opponent, only to wake up a prisoner once more realizing that the life it just lead wasn't real. That all this time, it has remained a prisoner of the Void, and very well may continue to be for the rest of eternity.
In risk of rain returns log it says he is made in a lab and being transported in the contact light
I love your story telling, great video!
Thank you very much! I'm always worried that people are going to hate that, but happy to hear it's enjoyable! :)
Thanks for watching!
RISK OF RAIN 2 SECOND DLC WHENNNNNNN I really hope they add some more lore to the game
I'm sure they're going to, but it'll probably be another year (or even longer) before it comes out. I'm excited for it though! :)
Thanks for watching!
Oh, how poorly Acrid being an alien aged
I thought the commando was the only other survivor that was also from Risk Of Rain 1

*Murders Acrid
“The human didn’t kill it.”
I’m still of the opinion that the best ror2 mod is the one that changes void fiend to void friend, it just bring so much joy to the game
Love your videos
Thanks for the continued support, Rickard! Means a lot! :)

this was very cool to listen to! THank you!
This is your sign to travel to an alternate plane of existence to free a doggy from space jail, cause it just might help you kill a local god.
I do understand this interpretation of acrid’s lore, but due to the gameplay loop that could confuse the canon-ness of the game, I much prefer the idea of an uncontainable creature that only yearned for being left alone. This is perhaps the story I would have presented:
-Acrid, prisoner/cargo of Contact Light
-Providence attacks
-Acrids containment is sent to the planet
-Acrid breaks out of the container
-with an acute knowledge, acrid understands technology and is able to operate the remains of Contact Light in order to escape
(While I do think that it’s pretty wholesome to think about acrid in “retirement” on petrichor V, it’s clearly shown that he’s at least on the ship as it flies away)
-With Providence dead, the void reavers have a new found freedom to roam the planet, and go after the being that it has never seen before: Acrid
(This is with my interpretation that Acrid is the only of its kind, perhaps a genetically designed creature, an isolated mutation, or perhaps an aberration created by a cosmic hiccup)
-After the void reavers capture acrid, it is apparent that the void cells are not perfect, as acrid remains aware of its surroundings
-The void fiend escapes, causing panic and destabilization of the void fields
-Acrid, takes this opportunity to slip out of containment, and back into petrichor V, where it then begins the gameplay loop of RoR2.
Real Acrid Backstory: Just a good boi :)
acrid is one of my favorites. and for me acrid is a crocodile doggo ^^

@@SquatchGamingChannel THank you for putting out suchy entertaining videos!!
There actually is a bit of lore we learn in Risk of Rain Returns about Acrid
This video predates Returns so you can't be blamed of course
According to returns, Acrid isn't a member of some crocodilian species akin to a toxic lemurian variant, he's actually an artificial lifeform called a chimera made from combining the DNA of multiple other creatures.
Acrid is simply... a good boi.
Jelly Dog is so kool and so tragic
I always assumed acrid was created by being incorrectly assembled from the void cell
time for risk of rain 3 and for him to be inprisoned again
I have a theory about the void fiend, and its relation to acrid. The void fiend is the survivor from the first game. Think. Why would this “corrupted” thing have a helmet shaped head, and why does this humanoid have the same general shape and size (I’m going off of looks in the select screen) as the commando? One thing I’ve noticed is that we always see the “survivor” from risk of rain 1 as the commando, at least in most of the footage that people use in relation to the ending.
Acrid, the goodest boy
Id say the artificer is also a carry over from the first game. Since we find him imprisoned
Artificer never was in the first game

The developers have given us a bit of an idea of what will be added and what the game looks like in a "Dev Thoughts" they made which you can watch here:
ua-cam.com/video/PivWxDUHlhw/v-deo.html
We'll find out more about the game throughout 2023 (which is also when it is supposed to release)
Hope that helps, Muhammed. If you have any questions, feel free to ask away! Again, thanks so much for watching anything you have! I really appreciate it! :)

Is it possible to do vids like this for all the operatives in the game? Or might there just not be enough
There's some that have enough lore to do videos on (I even started working on one for Kur-Skan), but I never followed through with making any. I don't currently have any plans to revisit the series, but maybe I will when Risk of Rain Returns comes out later this year. We'll see

He still has the manacles and bit of broken chain on his wrist but he is completely free of the ball and chain he dragged around in 1.
