We used to do this in FAR121 passenger ops with B1900D VFR from EWR to ALB it was so cool!!! I have not done that in such a long time and it was so nice to see and hear this again, so I can do this in my C172 soon! Thanks!
Hi Jon, thanks for the great video, it bought back a ton of memories, I got my private flying out of Teterboro airport in the late 70's, the Hudson river was my playground, Stewart airport and Hudson Valley RGNL were regular stops, the wide area of the river north of the Tappan Zee Br. is where I did spin practice and laps around Ms. Liberty was a must when carrying passengers, lots of changes since those day, more traffic, more rules and too many helicopters...
Yeah, I made it!
I flew today Hudson Exclusion and Skyline routes as a PIC! :)
At 7:00 am it was nice, smooth, and quiet on CTAF, we were the sole aircraft on the route :)
Thanks, Jon for the video, it helped a lot!
BTW, a night before I flew this route in new MS Flight Simulator 2020 and found it very helpful, it was almost as real as it is in real life!
I remember Flying this the first time on a xc from KTTN-KOXC. Coolest experience ever! Flew right over KLGA.
It was really amazing to see the city from the air!
You were where the miracle on the Hudson took place! 😊
いつも刺激的な動画をありがとうございます😊
これからも楽しみにしてます!
Thanks for this information! I didn't realize it was that easy. Definitely going to fly it this summer!
It will be worth it for sure!
Thank You - This is a GREAT video. I have wanted to fly that route but was afraid it was way more difficult; seeing it flown was very helpful. Good Job!
Glad it helped ya, and hope you can make it happen one day!
Really loved this video, thanks Bud.
Of course, feel free to share it around a bit!
Glad to see a Bearhawk video - more please - been interested in their line of aircraft for a while now. I love taildraggers, miss my C-120.
They're pretty great aircraft... definitely a fan so far
This is so cool!!!
Awesome vid as always. This will be useful when I am planning an east coast trip.
Thanks! Hope you get a chance to get over there soon!
@@fly8ma.comflighttraining199 It would be a huge trip but I was thinking starting in FL and hitting NY and DC(Maybe your next video) on the way to oshkosh.
I did this twice as a atudent at night. It was awesome. As intimidating NYC can be its like anywhere else. Just call put and communicate. They know its busy, they know its a tourists thing. They will work with you.
Did that on the 4th of July in 1983. Even later at night those latino guys in upper manhattan Washington Heights were shooting rockets at us. We could see them under and some around us. Felt like a WW2 night bomber pilot over Germany.
Awesome vid thanks!
Sure thing! Share it arround!
That’s an extremely good video and very informative 👍. Thanks for making it 🍺
Of course, and feel free to share it around a bit! Cheers!!
Such a fun area to put around in. People dont realise how easy it is.
Love this video John. Lots of great tips (as always)!
Native NY'r. Hoping one day to make that flight myself, once I get recertified.
Oh, can you say Verrazano one more time LOL! ;)
Nice video the night time part is beautiful. I used to live a couple of blocks from the GW bridge and walk it once in a while. shows you how old I am I remember when they built the lower level . Jon how come Stef is hardly in the video need a GoPro pointed to the back seat.
Safe travels
Awesome.
Feel free to share it around a bit!
I just did the NY SFRA course
Please do a video with your opinions/thoughts on the Patrol! I'm just starting building one from plans, love hearing as much as possible about it.
We have a few up already: ua-cam.com/video/5Gb3H-LTRV0/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/nwUaOAcWOjg/v-deo.html
Good luck with the build, I think it will definitely be worth it!
Great video!!!!!!!!!
It's much appreciated!
Some kinda nice!
Wing-rockin' demo, Jon! Amp-ing the traffic flavor was on point. It can get busy.
Flew it hundreds of times, never gets old.
Affirm, that water is naaasty.
Hey that water is actually pretty clean!
This is very cool!
Feel free to share it around a bit!
FLY8MA.com Flight Training will do 👍🏻👍🏻
My dream flight👍✈️
It's pretty great, if I do say so myself
I’m heading there in the morning!
Have fun!
Great segment! Something I've always wanted to do....someday it will happen.
It will be worth it!!
Crazy I grew up in upstate NY and never been to the falls. Now down in TX working on my Commercial/CFI then home to CMH. 2020 is going to be great!
@@michaelwojcik6577 Sounds like an awesome journey, best of luck to you!
flown over, under every bridge in the triborough area ..except Hellgate,1970,s suburban sea plane..WOW, Bearhawk time machine.thx
YOu, too lucky you,,!! Why not me??
Those must have been some pretty stunning flights!

Excellent video, important to take the FAA SFRA Course beforehand, as it reviews everything you need to know in preparation. Also, very important to check for TFR’s prior to your flight up & down the Hudson, as TFR’s occur frequently with the Trump Tower and nearby golf course, as well as local baseball games. Hudson River Corridor is definitely a Great Flying Experience!
I use to fly around the kfrg area before 9/11 happened. I’m sure things have changed tremendously since.
Great video. Just make sure you don't crash into that Holland Bridge.
Don’t go when there’s a baseball game! (TFR) surface to 3000’
You have a good point there lol
A lot of times they clear you through the TFR if on the controlled Skyline Route. It has happened to me before
Good stuff!
Feel free to share it around!
@@fly8ma.comflighttraining199 will do! Hey I shot ya email a couple days ago about something I"m putting together if you're interested!

@@fly8ma.comflighttraining199 aweseome--just resent!
Nice flight, thanks. Guessing you did it at night also?
I COULD be wrong in what I am about to say, but I have done this flight many, many times myself. Here is my understanding of the rules and how they work, I would advise you to look into it to make sure.
So you were NOT transitioning the area north to south or south to north. If you had done that, you would have been required to stay between 1000 and 1300 feet, and you would have picked up a clearance too. But being that you were pretty much sight seeing, then circling the statue of liberty, then even turning around and going back up northbound, you were certainly not transitioning the airspace, and therefore flying above the altitude you should have been at for most of the time.
I see the VFR sectional list an altitude for local flights from surface up to. but not including, 1000'. I believe you can go higher north of the GW bridge, or south of the VN, but look it up! I could be wrong.
You would, of course, need to stay at least 500' agl to make it all legal too. Thing is, around the statue of liberty, you can not be ABOVE 500' either! That would put you right into the airspace for Newark!
Anyway, I have taken many, many students up and down the river, but this was well before I started flying for the airlines. Things could have changed!
Happy flying. Jan.
Great informative video. Although I will never be up that way flying, I noticed Nikko had a Statue of Liberty video about a month or so ago, and he alluded to the congestion around the Hudson. And I thought then someone should do a video on just the procedures to go up and down the river and bingo yours showed up. Great work.
Must have been meant to be! Definitely enjoyed the ride, and very happy to share the in's and out's of the route
Did you encounter any jet traffic into LGA? Often they bring arriving flights along the corridor at the lowest level of the class B. If you did, how did you deal with wake turbulence from them?
I'm curious where did you get your altimeter setting from? With a 300 foot window I was concerned about busting it when I flew through. As always, thanks for sharing.
You're pretty close to Laguardia or Newark to use their setting.
Awesome video. I am planning on flying the Hudson SFRA soon because MMU is very close. Quick question, it seems like you descended from 1100 to 900 to circle the statue. The FAA recommends that you leave the transient airspace and re-enter under 1000 if you want to circle the statue. That seems like it would be more dangerous but I'm not sure. Did you descend straight through 1000?
Yeah, he technically didn't followed what's outlined when flying the transient route between 1k and 2,999. You're not supposed to make any heading or altitude changes without first flying outside the corridor past the VZ bridge and then drop down and come back in lower to circle the statue. You can then fly back out again and climb back up to head North. I guess people kind of do a mix of what they want though. I'm going to be flying this tomorrow hopefully.
FlyMA8.....what publication for the reporting points?.....Thank You, very much needed....Than You
Check part 93 and the kneeboard supplement from the FAA
ver-ah-zon-oh bridge.hope this helps!lol
Italianio bridge, gabagooool
Yeah, nobody would call it VZ bridge and it can be confused with TZ, which locals DO sometimes say for the Tappan Zee bridge. If you say VZ and someone misinterprets it as TZ, then they will think you are 20 miles north of where you really are.
@@nathanheeter1342 I’ve been flying in the NYC area for 24 years and I’ve never heard it called VZ. The only two letter bridges I’ve heard are GW and TZ.
@ 3:21... "Holland BRIDGE" ? LOL
@9:33
I am a Canadian considering flying the Hudson SFRA. I know it's called Class B EXCLUSION but is it still Class B? Do i need ADS-B or ADAPT authorization? Thanks, and great Video by the way!
Great video. Flying up and back (in MSFS2020 simulator) what would be a suitable airfield from which to depart and return to for a 60 minute flight slow and low please?
Westchester (HPN) is perfect, 11nm from the southbound entrance (Alpine Tower)...Orange County (MGJ), Bridgeport (BDR), Danbury (DXR) or Republic (FRG) are secondary options, but all of which will be a bit more than hour, about 35nm from Alpine, esp FRG as you have to circle the Bravo...some options in Jersey I'm not so familiar with: Essex (CDW) and Morristown (MMU), and there are a few untowered strips 20nm south of Verrazano Bridge, but again, I'm not familiar...Jon I hope you don't mind the link, no hard feelings if you have to delete it :), but here is the video the HPN flight school made. It was peak COVID May 2020 so I'm sure traffic was light and not as much activity the GB and Westside highway were dead!: ua-cam.com/video/Qn544EODEU8/v-deo.html
It's supposed to be "G W B" and "V Z" for the bridges
Yes, and it’s “statue of liberty” not “lady liberty” like I heard people say yesterday flying it in a Bonanza
so I fly a paramotor, and would love to attempt this SFRA. I can announce fine, but Is the Hudson corridor true Class-E?
That is correct
Well done! Thank you. Want to see the views from the cockpit while you talk. Not from your desk.
I would like to hear this channel on liveatc.net if it's not their already.
I heartily agree. Sadly, it’s not on the iPhone app.
The fact you call out as a Super Cub, brings up something I’ve been wondering about. With reporting aircraft make, when reporting as a Piper, how would someone know you’re in a high-wing or low-wing? In this case wouldn’t it be better to call out the model instead?
Good point. I have been trying to bring this kind of reporting Oskosh style, but conservatives in ATC dont care. They like to see more mid airs and scares. Which makes them argue to hire more ATC..
Is there no flight plan is required??
best sunglasses (polarized vs non) -- added color to lense?
ua-cam.com/video/26qYrSNYJXM/v-deo.html
If the exclusion of 1000' - 1300' is for transient operations, and it's expected you won't make major deviations in heading and altitude, how do you account for descending 300' to circle the statue? Did you exit the exclusion, descend, then come back in the way the FAA materials recommend? This flight is on my bucket list, but it has to wait until I retire, since I'm 1500 miles away.
"Circling the Statue of Liberty" has a section on the SFRA page, bottom right... "do so at the highest practical altitude below 1,000 feet MSL" and so on.
how tempted were you to try to fly under the GWB?
OOO....very tempting! I'm pretty sure that is frowned upon though... :(
are you supposed to call out when you pass a VFR reference point? I have one by my airport (KEKX) but its the only one.
You don't have to, but it can be used to let A.T.C. know of your position in case you need it. In this case, reporting these points was required because of the S.F.R.A.
What day did you fly here? I think we may have watched you fly by as we were at the top of One World Trade Center.
Would've been just before Thanksgiving
Aren't they afraid of terror attacks, when flying over downton NYC?
Freedom has some risks.... luckily we have the freedom to fly almost anywhere and lots of good people keeping the bad people away
Would a sport pilot be able to fly this route ?
Sure👍
Vair-Iz-Zon-No ;)
Saw this view many times from the crew chiefs door of a CH-53, except the twin towers were standing. Thanks to all now serving, those who have, and those who will in the future. FLY NAVY!!!
"Holland Bridge"?? You must from out of town.
Better tell you tube not to put Anti Impotence ads on your videos. LOL...
