In this video we'll take a look at Special VFR (flying VFR in less than Visual Flight Rules weather minima). Basically, the weather isn't good enough to call it VFR, but you deem it safe (or otherwise necessary to be flying in those conditions) and get a special clearance from ATC to do so.

As a 30+ year air traffic controller in the enroute structure I really appreciate your videos. One chunk of input FWIW, when your student consistently states, "request special"... I would have asked your, probably with a bit of skunk on it, what exactly is she asking for. Shorting the request for "special VFR" as "request special" should always be spelled out. Not saying that to be a critic...I'm just saying I would not have fully understood what she wanted. Obviously the controller figured it out but it sure doesn't hurt to use full and common language vs slang when speaking to ATC and vice versa. I always try to use standard phraseology with y'all unless it is absolutely necessary to take care of the pilots needs as quickly and efficiently as possible. Anyway...just thought I'd throw that in there to keep the peace with the grumpy salty ATC-ers out there :) Love these videos. I always try to see what is going on on y'alls end so that I can make both of our lives easier (more specifically...mine :)

Another good use for special is when the edge of the IFR conditions is close by. I got to the airport with clear skies heading out on a 500 NM trip. While fueling, a 900 ft cloud layer moved in. I could still see the edge of the clouds about 3 miles away and the rest of the route was clear. Got special clearance, flew out from under the clouds and on my way.

I had a CFI give me another good example. Marginal VFR conditions with ceiling at 2000ft but wanted to cross a class D airspace. Requested SVFR so he could cross at 1900ft to give a higher safety margin to not have to keep 500ft below the clouds.

Last year I had a flight where the weather at my destination was 2 miles in smoke due to a local fire. Since I had learned to fly there and knew the airport and local landmarks extremely well I was prepared to fly SVFR. The next airport down the road was CAVOK so I had an out if I needed it.
I didn't need it. The weather improved to 5 miles by the time I got there. Still not great, but doable.

The first flight that I ever made after getting my private with a passenger, I ended up having to get special VFR to approach and land at my controlled airport Reid/Hillview in San Jose CA. The conditions were not caused by clouds but by smog. Bad smog. it was the airport that I trained at so area was very familiar. I had no problems. Had I not been intimate with the area I would not have tried it.

Questions: I have not flown for many years. It was too expensive. However, I do have a question. When I was practicing, I took off from SNA and flew over the ocean to practice. While I was practicing, a cloud cover came in and covered SNA leaving only a few open spots through which I could fly down through, and which is what I did do. However, in after though I am certain I made a dangerous choice. What should I have done? Robert

I used to fly out of Fullerton, Ca in the 80’s and 90’s. The only time I asked for special vfr was late the in afternoons when the smog and the low sun made it difficult to see the ground when flying towards the sun which is also the direction of final since the winds usually came from the west. straight down and to the east it was easier to see the ground. Once the sun set it was much easier to see the lites on the ground for orientation.

I've never used it, as virtually every day is a VFR day where I am, and you definitely wouldn't wanna push it with the mountainous terrain anyway, but the feeling I get is that SVFR is always a bit sketchy. Sounds like an appropriate use in your case. In the video, however, visibility was absolute shit, and I hope no one would push it in similar conditions without the IFR experience and well-equipped aircraft they had as well as the right mindset.

Question: if the ceilings were around 1100ft, shouldn't you be flying 500ft below them at 600ft (prior to getting your clearance)?

  • @franck_mee

Actually, my FI sent me solo to the nearest airport in special VFR when I was like 35 hr or so. I had been there before, I knew the area quite well, there was very little traffic because, well, special VFR conditions!, we had flown in poor conditions together before, and he thought it would be a good training to have me navigate 10 min each way in a 4 km visibility with a 1500 ft ceiling. :D
I do think it was a good idea, by the way. This short hop to a place I knew in near-normal-but-still-not-that-normal conditions made me realize I really wouldn't want to try a special VFR arrival on an unknown airfield…

04:10 approach controller says Part.93 (SVFR) altitude deviation approve means pilot can deviate altitude 300ft or more from assigned altitude, right? or any other meaning ?

    • @btmountaineer93
      @btmountaineer93 4 роки тому +4

Here in Alaska, there is a special air regulations known as the Part 93 Alaska supplement. These regulations determine what altitudes aircraft flying across Knik Arm can enter the class C/D airspace of ANC, LHD, MRI, or EDF segments. These regulations protect aircraft on instrument approaches into EDF and MRI. In this instance, the had to cross the Knik Arm below 600’ or above 2000’. A Part 93 deviation would allow them to cross Knik Arm at whatever altitude they wish. I hope this makes sense, of it doesn’t feel free to ask.

Here’s a scenario I have a question about. The area where I live has had about six out of the last seven days now with the class delta airport reporting IFR. The conditions have mostly been 10 miles plus of visibility, but ceilings between 1000 and 1500 feet. It’s like that all day long, with almost no change in the conditions. I have a light sport weight shift trike, which does not have any regulatory minimum altitude requirements, but VF our cloud clearances require that you are 500 feet below clouds. Can I ask for special VFR as long as I stay more than 500 feet below the clouds? This is not something I would normally do to go on a recreational flight, but it would be nice to take advantage of the calm conditions to do some pattern work at the airport.

    a. Airplane equipped for IFR flight
    b. Instrument rating

to request a Special VFR, why wouldn't you just request an IFR clearance in flight?
