    I wish they would stop this live action remake obsession. Its awful, they are ruining great movies. I don't understand why they can't tell new stories.

    • @ryanb4940

      They do tell new stories…? Wish just came out and is original, Pixar had Elemental which is original. And how does a live action movie ruin the original if the original still exists and is available to easily steam??

    • @Attmay
      @Attmay 11 місяців тому +92

      *Wish* is a collection of Easter eggs in search of a basket. *Elemental* is a half-baked conceptual non-starter predicated on the false idea that any of the oppressor classes can ever be oppressed.
      Yes, the existence of the remakes cheapens the originals because they are a form of cultural gaslighting. They are telling you that your childhood was problematic and that by proxy you are problematic, too, for liking the OGs. These movies are a slap in the face to Walt Disney and everybody who worked for him. They are basically prejudiced against him at this point. Disney is prejudiced against Walt.
      The original being available is besides the point. The point is that if you make bad choices available, people will take them. And how long are the originals still going to be available to stream? And that’s especially insulting when *Song of the South* is held hostage for an inferior all-yt knockoff. These movies are knockoffs of themselves. They are glorified Goodtimes home video releases made by boomers whose worldview was already thoroughly refuted by the time they fired John Amos from *Good Times.*

      @@ryanb4940 That's totally fair, good point. Though I think there's something to be said about the fact that we've been getting a Disney live-action remake every single year since 2014. Is that indicative of a larger issue of Disney prioritizing those films over original theatrical releases? That's what it feels like to plenty of folks. Also the argument that "a remake ruins the original" is a tough one, because it's a pretty loaded statement, and people can mean a whole bunch of different things when they say that. Does it mean "a remake adapts the film and creates a ruined version of it, separate from the original"? Or does it mean "a live-action remake ruins the original because now the original has to share its legacy with a worse film of the same name, therefore the franchise as a whole has been tainted"? etc. It's often hard to draw an exact meaning from any vague platitude about the current state of Disney without them explaining further, so I totally understand your perspective.

      @@AttmayIf you think remakes are telling you that you are problematic then you are either deeply insecure and neurotic or you have a lot of pent up guilt for being a terrible person and don't want to face it. Either way, you can seek help and make changes in your life so you don't find yourself in the silly position of feeling targeted by movies and caring way too much about it.

    What frustrates me most about the glut of live-action adaptations is the implication that animation, especially 2D, is a 'lesser' medium that is improved by making it 'real'. Or that animation is more juvenile, even if the subject matter can be appreciated by both adults and kids. Hence these remakes, which let's face it are geared towards the kids of the 80s and 90s who are now adults and therefore need a more 'adult' medium, are not animated remakes (apart from the Lion King I guess?) or new stories in the same world, but are an attempt at basically the same film in a more 'mature' medium.
    And yet you show through many of your points that the expressiveness, flexibility and beauty of animation just doesn't translate. Are there any examples of a live-action film remade into animation?
    Nice video - looking forward to seeing more 😊

    • @bradleyg_
      @bradleyg_  Рік тому +98

      Yeah that's a good point, it kinda sucks that it's only recently that we're starting to see animation in the West be treated more as a broad medium of storytelling rather than just a 'genre' for kids. Thanks for your input, more to come :)

      To answer your question, there are some instance of classic live-action movie adapted in animated tv-shows. Like Beetlejuice, The Mask, or the upcoming Scott Pilgim show. These works because it expands upon the world, not just remakes the same movie. There are also some weird animated Willy Wonka and Wizard of Oz movies with Tom and Jerry inserted in them lol
      My hot take is: it's impossible for Disney to make a good live-action adaptation of an animated movie. Why? Because they're making an adaptation of an adaptation. The only way it could work is if they were making another adaption of the ORIGINAL fairy tale. They actually did that a few years ago, with Snow White and Alice in Wonderland. But the main selling point of these recent remakes is: "this is the SAME movie that you love, but without the drawings", and for some reason, people are into that, which makes me really sad.

      @@Pollicina_db that perception started before the 1980s. By that point, it had become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Even before that, Don Bluth had already staged his walk out from Disney when they did not heed his suggestions on how to make their movies better.

    i've noticed in a lot of live action they also make scenes darker to the point it can be hard to tell whats going on, that and you cant really use mood lighting to set a scene. like the green with scar. in animation mood lighting is often used to help emotions i think wolfwalkers and alot of anime like BNA have the best example of this. the only live action i genuinly enjoy and rewatch is maleficent

    What they forget is that animation was not a weak version of live action footage - it is art in its own right. People loved the artwork of those animated films. It's as pointless as doing a CGI version of Fantasia or Allegro Non Troppo. It's like making an AI version of the Mona Lisa. People will always prefer the original.

      To me, I feel that animation is in several ways stronger than live-action. The Amazing World of Gumball, Kill La Kill, The Amazing Digital Circus, many of Pixar's movies, etc. are some good examples of just how much more interesting, impactful & wonderous animation can be compared to live-action if the cards are played right.

    It always annoyed me that in the live action she sees her father getting attacked by the townspeople instead of just getting sick. • @Attmay

This is already very impressive work, from the animation, of course, to the audio mixing, to the commentary. I just hate when UA-camrs, even very sucsessful ones, just replay 30 seconds of Trailer footage, and reiterate the same exact talking points that everyone else says, then they rake in 750,000 views. It's very obvious how much time and thought went into this video and Its not a hard prediction to say this Channel is going to blow up in the very near future. Finding a gem like this one Sub 1,000 views is always special. Keep up the amazing work! Really seems like a lot of time and effort went into this. Yes Disney Remakes and Disney as a whole needs to be reworked from the ground up. As much as I hate Disney, The issue was with the fans who encouraged them to make the remakes in the first place. The Fact that Aladdin, and Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast were these finacial junngernauts, all passed a Billion dollars, gave Disney the green light to keep shitting these "movies" out. People need to pay with their wallets and Its a shame it took as long as it did. This has been a cathatric year, seeing Blunder after Blunder from these major studios.

    1:31 Having just watched the animated comedy video, it actually made me notice that you did the _exact_ kind of subversion of expectation that you mentioned in that video! You have the setup with mentioning the new barber being detrimental and showing your character immediately post-haircut, leading the audience to think it's going to be the _haircut_ that was the bad experience. And then the punchline happens, catching the audience off guard and - hopefully - making them laugh. which I very much did, right before recognizing the structure and coming down here to mention it. I love that!!

    Look, I get Disney not wanting to return to form with 2D animated films (with the exception of their 100 year anniversary short), but I feel like the issue goes way deeper than the medium. Whether it's live action or 2D, you've got to have really well written stories and interesting ideas that I'm certain Disney doesn't want to put in the effort to do so. This is why I'd rather attribute the studio's success to the individual minds that innovate the industry rather than the executive heads who've been running it for the past decade or so. So these live action slop really just sucks out any passion or heart the originals have had. Brad Bird puts in nicely when he says "animation is not a genre" it's just a medium to tell your stories, and you've got to keep pushing for more interesting ways to do so. That's the freedom with this medium.
    Also was really surprised at how underrated your channel is as a whole; this video made me think you've been doing this for a while. Keep it up man, your style of writing and presentation is incredibly entertaining lmao.

Google image happy lion cub, sad lion, angry lion cub etc and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. You know Disney's REALLY messed up when real animals emote more clearly than their CGI ones. Why they didn't use these images for help in expressing what the characters are feeling as beyond me.

    • @bradleyg_
      @bradleyg_  11 місяців тому +5

      Yeah, that was definitely one of my weaker points for sure. I was trying to get across how big of a sacrifice it was to go from animated characters to realistic animals, but I should've also conceded that they still could've done a much better job at depicting facial expressions even within the bounds of realism.

      @@bradleyg_ This movie came out while I was learning animation at college. The one thing we'd criticize is Hollywood's definition of "realism". You're absolutely right about the lack of animal emotions and tbh it was probably because either the pipeline for making the movie or the rigs themselves lacked the ability to allow the animators to express the animations. Also another example of terrible realism is the color pallet for this movie. Africa has and immense range of colors in its environment but they settled on only earth tones.

    The thing with the animated Beast's hands is that even if he has a thumb the overall construction of the hand is still very paw-like, and while they technically have fingers animals with paws can't easily move them, so Beast has to awkwardly claw the spoon to grab it, Belle notices so she eventually meets him halfway, it's actually a very tender scene with a slight twinge of tragedy.
    Meanwhile the live action Beast has a fully human hand covered in hair, so him refusing to use it is just absurd and thus the scene is transformed into something ugly and awkward.
    On the matter of emotion, I think him being more human-like could potentially help to convey emotion, I mean, it actually works with other versions like Beastly (The movie itself sucks but Pettyfer's performance is really good), the problem is that Disney hired a toothpaste model instead of an actual actor, and since he's stuck talking to another toothpaste model (Emma Watson), neither of them is really using their face to emote.

    Great video! We forgot one really good live action remake that came out in the 90s and that's the 101 Dalmations. The cartoon came out late 60s. I'd bet there's a wild comparison between how they did that movie vs all these current ones.

  • @alexandersean4708

    What makes this more painful is that they canceled the one live action remake of a movie that didn’t need the animation to work, Hunchback of Notre Dame. Probably because it “doesn’t fit their spotless image.” Stage musical is great, though.

I love that you integrated your own great animation, that to me looks like a combination of the character design from Gravity Falls with the realistic CG backgrounds from The Amazing World Of Gumball into your well written editorial on Disney remakes.
