Think Filson's bags are too old timey? Then you should try their Dryden Backpack, a much more modern and functional bag made with military grade nylon. It's a lot cheaper, partly because it's made with cheaper material but also because it's made in Vietnam, a deal breaker for some guys. I'd recommend the Dryden for the average guy, but I personally prefer the Journeyman. Here's why.

To boil this all down to its simplest form:
-The Dryden is functionally superior in every way.
-The Journeyman is just plain cooler.
The journeyman is now made in Vietnam . No drain holes in the back pocket. No gussets to hold the bag open and no water bottle pockets on the inside.
I agree with you Nick on the bags and I can see you have been bitten by the Filson bug... LOL... I'm an old timer now and been buying from Filson for over 40 plus years... Love the old fashioned materials they used going back to the Gold Rush, wool, twill, canvas, oiled twill etc. My first purchase was a wool vest that I ended up giving to my ex wife, then bought another and outgrew it and sold it and finally a third one I still wear...! This along with 3 different cruisers, 2 wool jac shirts which I love, Alaskan Guide shirts, back pack, hats, belts, tote bag that I use every time I work my part time job (Outfitter for an outdoor fishing, hunting, camping store 3 days a week).. I'm retired from my career job now, engineer on the RR ... Love your videos and by the way, one of the reasons I just purchased a pair of Low 1's by Oliver Cabell was because of your excellent narrative and reviews on them ... Keep up the great work...Thanks, GG... Indiana
Dryden is the best backpack I’ve ever had and I collect backpacks. It’s so sturdy and the pockets are perfectly designed.
Heads-up to Journeyman owners. NYC has been a scorcher lately. Walking more than a couple of blocks led to serious sweating. Ended up having to carry it by the leather loop. Dryden is likely better on summer days. Wish I never gave up my Tumi Alpha Bravo with the vented back.
I have both. You can only fall in love with the Journeyman. A very aesthetic product. I was skeptical about the Dreyden at first because it is quite bulky and voluminous. But in the end, the simplicity of the design and the division of the individual compartments are really well thought out and perfect for business trips. I have it in dark camo.
Would the Dryden fit a 3.25" diameter Yeti Rambler (26oz)?
Got the Dryden new at 160€ (here in Europe is priced at a crazy 295€!). At the original price I could never justify it. I have to say I love it, using it for day hikes and going to work as a doctor with two meals, 1.5 liters of water, books and a change of clothes for 12 hours shifts. I could not fit that much stuff into the Journeyman, tho I agree with you that’s the nicest pack.
Great feedback Ennio! What color did you get?
@@Stridewise I got the Olive color, which is the best looking imho. Not a fan of the black one to be onest.
Love the no labeling on the Journeyman. I agree with not advertising. It’s like buying a new car and leaving the dealership’s name on the rear bumper.
haha! the label isn't too ostentatious on the dryden though i'm OK with it
I have the Filson one. And i took it to a day trip to Yosemite. And....... well, it looked cute. But it is really not good for hiking even for short hikes. And it transferred its green color onto my shorts. I think my bag was moist from hiking in the mist trail, then i put it on my legs while it was still moist, and that's how it discolored my shorts. The shorts were ruined, washed it about 5-6 times with stain remover and still have the same green color on them. So guys be careful.
is the journeyman no longer available?
I picked up that same wilder from Bradley mountain along with one of their duffles. I wonder if maybe the biographer or their yet to be released Muir bag would be a good comparison to either of these two?
yeah I think my Wilder vs Journeyman video was enough Bradley Mountain vs Filson haha most of the specs translate :)
Every time I use the leather togs and double zips to open my Journeyman I get tactile ASMR.
It feels like I'm drawing the bow on a Stradivarius - the cheap(?) thrill pays for itself over time :-)
Hahaha! That's so well put, a Stradivarius. Love it
I ordered it, the journeyman, but when I found out it was made overseas, for the price I returned it and bought the Pack Animal, $250
No thank-you!
I like my tan Jorneyman so much that I bought a second one in olive!
I do not mind the odd looks when backpacking...I just enjoy... in the end the looks are just of envy!
I want a tan one too but they stopped selling them! I got a tan oil finish rucksack instead
The Journeyman looks just like the bag I carried in elementary school in the late 70s. And it costed about $15.00. Looks like the same color and material
Love my Journeyman, incredible product. Although mine doesn’t have the two water bottle slots inside - have they updated/redesigned it since you picked it up Nick?
Really? How odd. They're just little pockets, maybe you missed them lol but I can only assume they updated the design if yours doesn't have them Terry!
I think these were never meant to be bottle slots . I think those flaps are just there to prevent the front from falling over if the zipper is all the way open. 🤷♂️
I just really like the look of the Journeyman. I've looked at lots of bags and this one is just the look and type that speaks to me. Nice comparison. Enjoy your content, thanks.
Definitely! Glad you liked it Daniel
What is the brand of the watch( black color) and the jean that u are wearing in the video? Cos it's look awesome!
Oh the black watch is Tag Heuer: amzn.to/3j4VSP3 and the jeans are Tanuki! ua-cam.com/video/dFekEzrPywY/v-deo.html
I am quite curious why Filson offers lifetime warranty in the USA, but only 2 years in the EU
I have both of these bags. I like them.
Used my Dryden for an overhead stay last night! good casual backpack for a denim jacket
Hi Stridewise, Is there any maintenance with a waxed canvas bag? :)
only you might want to reapply the wax every couple of years. i don't though, i actually like unwaxed canvas :)
You will need to rewax tin cloth depending on use. It will eventually wear in high abrasion areas if it is not waxed. I have been using tin cloth jackets and bags for nearly 2 decades. Same thing happens with Barbour jackets.
They really should have put a zip on the front pocket of the journeyman. Way too easy for stuff to fall out.
They are nice, but I'll take Cravar waxed twill one if I'm in the market. Or even LBBJKT backpacks.
I'm the world's biggest cravar stan but I don't love their backpacks, they're really unwieldy. I think they're coming out with a new model this season though
I think the journeyman has an advantage with the “cool” factor, but not by much. The dryden just has so many features critical to a daily bag.
I know, I just spent 6 weeks traveling with the Dryden and wished I had my Journeyman just for the aesthetics. But the Dryden is bigger and more useful...
Hey Nick great comparison mate. Just wanted to check is the journeyman still made in USA? I thought I read it was made overseas. Would be worth the money if it’s made in USA. Would love to hear your thoughts. Cheers from Sydney.
Journeyman all the way but that grab handle issue really bugs me, I reinforced the stitches on mine but even at the price I paid (240 on eBay) I shouldn’t have to do any mods like that.
That being said the aesthetic is just right so what can ya do
I agree James! Grab handle is the only real flaw on that bag but it does look awesome.
Do you know if they still make these? I need one (the journeyman)
They've been sold out for a while but I'm sure they won't stop making the Journeyman it's the best backpack on Earth. You can Google for other retailers!
They have not said they won't make them, but most moving forward will not be made in the USA.
For me, if I'm buying a Filson product and all the cost that goes with that, I want the oldschool aesthetic with the twill, tincloth, leather etc. For my commuter/performance bag I'm a fan of my Patagonia Black Hole backpack. (Rainy Seattle = waterproof everything).
Totally makes sense! My Dryden is my go to for traveling these days just with all the pockets and extra size, but I love how my Journeyman matches my duffle
Hey Nick, a lady friend of mine is interested in getting Into quality boots, do you think it'd be possible to do a series on the female boots of some of the more reliable brands for quality boots?
you know i'd like to but i worry that anything for women would tank on this channel. but it'd probably be worth it! Truman Red Wing and thursday stand out, but Thursday's women shoes aren't gyw. yeah ok I'm doing this video, thanks Connor!
@@Stridewise woo, thanks Nick! I understand you're concern, the thought occurred to me aswell however I think it'd pay off in the long run as good review's for women's boots basically don't exist on UA-cam sooo untapped niche?
Hello from Australia btw
Another option, made in America, NutSac, buy it before they start going overseas like Filson
I feel like this kind of glossed over the fact that a major component of a $400 bag failed six months in. I saw another video of a 2 year old bag and the bottom was already completely blown out and had to be repaired. Everyone talks about these bags being rugged but I’ve got $20 Jansports holding up better than that.
If Jorneyman still has any sense - thanks to your purchase, some hard worker from Seattle or Spokane will continue to receive his salary. Then Dryden has no such excuse for the highest price.
The appeal was that it was made in America, that’s why we didn’t mind paying the higher price. Now that is made overseas there are better options for allot less money, made with the same materials, like Pack Animal
Is there any maintenance with a waxed canvas bag? Weatherproofing and such.
The wax wears off after a year or two, if it's important to you you'd need to reapply based on how often you use it. Personally I like it better without the wax!
You will need to rewax tin cloth depending on use. It will eventually wear in high abrasion areas if it is not waxed. I have been using Filson waxed cloth items for nearly 2 decades for hunting/fishing. Same thing happens with Barbour jackets. I have over 25 shelter cloth and tin cloth jackets, vests, bags and cases to keep waxed.
The journeyman is alot cooler.
You should do a budget bag review sub 100 just to see if the cheaper stuff is worth it.
Great idea Gabriel!
The bags no longer live up to the value, they are made overseas, so the price hasn’t gone down
Any news/info on whether Filson will bring back the Journeyman in waxed canvas? I haven’t seen it on their website in months
Rumor is they're moving production to Asia :/
I e-mailed them and they said they don't know when the Journeyman will be back in stock but they confirmed it will still be made in the US.
@@rlfstr oh awesome thanks for your detective work dude!
@@Stridewise No problem. I am the Jack Ryan of backpacks
@@rlfstr this makes me excited. I have the Dryden briefcase and it’s nice but I’m a backpack man, I’ll just have to be patient until the journeyman comes back.
You need to update your video to reflect the changes 😊
Leave it to filson to try to make something more easily affordable but still charge $200 for a Walmart backpack.
hahaha
1000d Cordura isn't a Walmart pack
As a Dryden owner I disagree
You can tell KOIO about not to print brand name too obvious on their product.
Will do
Journeyman all day, 2 totally different personalities
Both of those bags are wayyyyy overpriced.
Welcome to Filson lol
Yeah, I’d spend my money elsewhere. Mystery Ranch, GoRuck to name a few.
No arguments here
Give me GoRuck or give me death! No, seriously GoRuck makes some seriously stout packs with a no matter what warranty. The company was started by a former Special Forces Army dude and is made in the U.S. if your not into the “tactical” look they have a “slick” line of packs too, without all the external molle that screams military.
yeah i appreciate their vibe but i don't love it, their bags are either too military or too modern :) that's just me though!
Yeah I can attest to that I had a heritage GR1 and it was INSANE BUT just bought a USA made Journeyman and items amazing looks better just didn't hold what my other one did
@@danielillingworth4303 these are the two I can’t decide between. I love the looks of the journeyman but I like the extra features on the go Ruck. Anything you’d like to add to help with my purchase?
The Journeyman is a pack that would force me to dress to match it.
Wait I’ve been pronouncing denier wrong all these years? 🤦🏽!
I understand that Filson is selling a lifestyle but both are absurdly overpriced.
Yeah I looked up a bunch of videos to make sure I was pronouncing it right! And yes, Filson is overpriced. Design is second to none though
My personal take…the Dryden looks like every school kid’s backpack. The Journeyman looks more like a grownup’s backpack. My only pet peeve is that the outside pocket is not zippered. I know other’s like the snap button. It just means things can come out.
Dryden bag looks cheap! Might be me but it looks like a $20 bag
it looks like the backpacks they sell schoolkids in Walmart. at best it looks like one of those Jansport backpacks that go for about 30 dollars at Kohl's. it does the job, but my schooldays are long over.
It’s a commuter bag. I cannot imagine paying that kind of money for what is essentially an imported school bag.
To be fair, I think that's just because it's black (er, sorry, Filson -- "dark navy"). The other colors are a little better
@@chukzombi I’m pretty sure Jansport has a lifetime warranty too, so you’re better off with one of those
@@14s0cc3r14 haha, thats good to know. i actually heard they make good products.
So basically if you want a “man purse” buy the Journeyman and If you want a real edc backpack but the Dryden.
The day another man says to me “nice backpack” is the last day it ever gets used by me. 😂
wouldn't a 'man purse' be shoulder slung or something? this isn't even leather, cmon now
I've had the Dryden for two years. When it's weighted down, laptop, books, or a short weekend (carry on or car trip), it's not comfortable as the straps don't have a chest strap. Big mistake in my book. It's functional, but the bigger zippers for the larger compartments also don't slide easily.
