  • Filson has been handcrafting some of the finest goods in the industry. One of the most coveted is this Filson Journeyman backpack. I've had this one for a few years and I think you'd like to know what it's like to have a bag of this quality and this huge price point for so long.
    It has a few surprising and not-so-surprising shortcomings.

    There’s a few knock-off models kind of similar but a quarter of the price online. Could be worth checking out, though I imagine there’s more budget leathers on it etc… but they look almost the same aesthetically. You might not get a lifetime out of them, but they’ll do the trick for a while for an honest, working class guy that doesn’t have a ton of ££ kicking around to drop on a bag. A lot of these knock offs are often made by people that have worked in the same factories anyway, so they know the product and construction process well enough to make cheap replicas.

    By the way I've heard stories about people buying used Filson bags for cheap and then asking Filson to fix them. They do it no questions asked. However that might not work anymore because Filson no longer manufactures the Journeyman in the US. For 85 bucks it's def a steal and you could sell it for much more if you feel like getting something else instead some day! After Filson moved production overseas the original Journeyman became even more valuable actually to collectors.

    • @morecoolshtlessbullsht
      @morecoolshtlessbullsht  Рік тому +1

      I should definitely see if I can get it repaired. It really is a beautiful bag. It’s a shame they moved the production out of America. I always had a bit of pride with something American made.

    Try waxing the zipper line. You can take a candle and rub the side along a zipper. Pencil lead (graphite) can work too. It will smooth out the zipper.

    Nice review dude, brought back memories of my trip to Japan (esp. Nikko, got some great shots there).
    Used to own the black version of this bag, was hilarious to watch someone express the exact same frustrations. The back of the bag didn't play well with some of my clothing, t-shirts kept riding up my back etc.
    With that said, I've looked far and wide and it's hard to find a better looking, non--gaudy carry-on sized pack. People are willing to drop a lot of money these days to LARP as a journeyman from the 1800s

    • @morecoolshtlessbullsht
      @morecoolshtlessbullsht  Рік тому +3

      Haha, Nikko was incredible. I'm back in Japan right now and damn did I miss walking around here.
      Very true. I have zero idea why just a simple looking backpack that is functional, is basically non-existent. One of my least favorite things that manufacturers do is label the "technology" being used. Like slapping a big label that says "AIR MESH ESCAPE PANEL" all over it, like we are walking billboards.
      Agreed. It's really funny seeing how people will drop mad cash to live the pioneer life.

      I took the Filson Ripstop Nylon Backpack traveling for five weeks. Obviously not heritage-looking but it’s certainly not gaudy. Just has a tiny little “Cordura” tab which you can hardly see. It’s too big for an everyday carry but it doesn’t look like a “backpacker’s backpack” and it’s INCREDIBLY practical. I took 13 flights with 3 airlines in 3 countries and it was fine as carry-on every time - that and a personal item bag was all I took for 5 weeks.
      Obviously not to your taste though as you’ve no doubt seen it already!

      It’s called the Fintie Protective case amzn.to/3YOUMd8 I really like it. It makes the laptop a bit thicker but the bumpers keep it from slipping around and I do feel like the case overall protects it from scratches, bumps, and pressure on the screen when my back is overstuffed. Which I believe what that x on the lid protector does.

    I bought the journeyman on a trip to DC at one of their stores. I wore it one time. ONE TIME. I tried to return it immediately after because the straps did not fit comfortably for long-term wear. I'm a woman, I have no idea if that is part of the issue but the bag sags even when the straps are at their tightest and it's uncomfortable. I told Filson that I had worn the item. I was very clear about the situation. I sent the bag back. They sent it back to me saying it was not saleable because it was worn. Yeah I told them that. I contacted customer service again because I can't beleive that a $500 bag isn't returnable after 1 use. I was denied again. They say it's their 'policy'. WTF kinda policy is that? They don't care at all about customer satisfactions. So yes I have a very expensive, cool looking, uncomfotable bag that I can't travel with as planned. I will never spend money with them again.

    Take it into a store and see if they can have it sent in for repairs. They’re not gonna have a database of all the people who bought the backpack. If they even bother asking, which I doubt, you tell them you got it as a gift or that you paid cash for it. How would they know?
