  • Filson is a brand which has had its fair share of hits and misses, but I've always maintained that their luggage and mackinaw wool products are a solid bet. In this video I take a closer look at the Filson Tin Cloth Backpack: a handsome little devil made of some really nice materials, but at $375 is it really worth it?

    Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
    I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

    Nice review - as usual! My son carries the Filson Field Bag. He also has the briefcase. He uses the filed bag daily - he keeps a lot of stuff in it as he works around our horse farm and on our neighbors property. He has tech bags - in varying sizes - for hiking (Osprey is his favorite) - but these Filson bags are rugged.

    It’s a nice pack but after comparison I ended up going with the Filson Rucksack. It has been offered by Filson seemingly forever and I find the two outside compartments really handy. I primarily use it for day hikes but occasionally use it to supplement my Filson Pullman luggage. Along with my 20 year old Filson original brief case I’ve got almost an excess of capacity in very durable matching twill for travel. No regrets!
    The Filson bridle leather really comes into its own after regular treatment with conditioner. I happen to use White’s heavy duty leather preservative.

    I’d use that if my plan was to repurpose it as MY EDC bag, but I can’t imagine it’s comfortable lugging a bunch of kid’s stuff and kids. We’ve been using the GoRuck bullet and GR 1 and they’ve served us well. A bit too tactical for some, but it’s tough as heck and has been through several years of abuse. Their customer service is on or with Filson too. I can attest to their briefcase and luggage- 10+ years of daily abuse and it looks better with each new scratch!
    Keep up the great work, Carl!

    Carl they have those pieces of leather with a snap that people use on dangler knife sheaths to secure them to their belt they'll just dangle on a ring held by a leather buttoned strap... Some of those may help the bag, I think Klein has a leather/canvas backpack and also hand bags.

      I'm from El Paso, Tx and i've owned a Mackinaw Cruiser for 2 years. We have enough "cold" days to justify getting one. I even use it to mountain bike in 40 degree(that's cold for me)weather. It's a great investment piece, treat yourself.

      Carl Murawski here in Texas it ain’t much and winter does get cold but it ends up getting warm I mostly live in South Texas and it gets hot later in the day.
      It gets to where I rather prefer a canvas coat, canvas vest, flannel shirt/or a cotton shirt, and long suit under it.

    • @Texo_McKevo
      @Texo_McKevo 3 роки тому +2

      GENZ I will say this in parts of Texas it does get cold in south Texas it’s a bit different.
      It gets cold at first then later around 2 or 5 it gets hot to where a coat of any kind gets to where you don’t want to wear it when you sweating.

    Nice review! Have you ever considered the Filson Journeyman Backpack? The first editions were absolutely beautiful with brass riveted straps, leather backstrap and very carefully constructed organization. They’re also made with 22oz Rugged Twill with Tin Cloth accents
    They can be found occasionally on eBay for as low as $200. I was able to find a first edition Navy version in like-new condition for $220

    • @CarlMurawski

    • @matts6551
      @matts6551 3 роки тому

      @@CarlMurawski The best although there has been speculation that modern day Filson uses something of a lighter weight density. So instead of the 22oz twill they are now utilizing a lesser weight, which could be as low as 18oz. I like your #256, does that have Talon zippers or YKK? Can't beat the first edition Talon Era.

    I got the 1st gen which had the filson patch on the flap and no insert. I love it but there is a design flaw where the bottom strap is attached to back fabric part which is pron to tear over time. They should have attached it to the edge seams like every other backpack. 10 yrs later and they still haven't changed the design. 🤣🤣

    Carl, I'm deciding between the 15 " Nutsac Jones all leather briefcase vs Filson 267 briefcase. It's a bit slimmer than their Original Briefcase. Other than cost, any thoughts?

    • @CarlMurawski
      @CarlMurawski  3 роки тому

      I have the Jones and the Filson Original briefcase, so based on those id say the Filson is more heavy duty. The zippers are heavier gauge and the bridle leather is excellent.

    I love filsons tin cloth but I think Frost River is hands down the best soft goods manufacturer in America. Similar how nicks boots was an offshoot of disgruntled whites boots cobblers, frost river came about when duluth pack co stopped caring about the quality their product so they could become a "status brand" for yuppies and hipsters.

  • @intergalacticferret4270

    Comparing a heritage quality Filson item to the Duluth brand is like saying Walmart is cheaper than Saks 5th Avenue. It's a very ridiculous comparison that makes no sense. Filson is refined Heirloom quality for the discriminating gentleman who demands perfection and performance. Duluth is for the vulgarized unrefined hoodlums who dropped out of school and work manual labor into their middle aged adulthood, and buy cheap so they can save up for their next video game at the pawn shop. Filson was never meant to be purchased by starving broke college kids. It was meant for the people who understand that quality matters when your life depends on it. Filson is meant for MEN, not wannabe hipster soyboys boys who can't figure out which gender they are.
