One reason why the Classic Series is easily the best era is because it had the least amount of executive meddling. And Thomas being completely absent from 35 of the 182 episodes from the classic series really shows that he doesn’t have to appear in every single episode to make them acceptable.
The fact that about 1/5th of the entire show doesn't actually revolve around Thomas, is honestly a lot higher of a number then one would come to expect, but it is certainly a pleasant change. Especially during the HiT, Miller & BWBA seasons.
This is probably the second time I've seen someone do this as Unlucky Tug did a short on it, and my god it just amazes me how often he appeared, didn't appear, or spoke.

As much as I love Thomas as a character, it would be nice to have more episodes in the later seasons without him. A lot of characters were being introduced at the time and it would have been a great opportunity to flesh out those characters more without needing Thomas being the forefront of it.
It was a happy day for the engines, Thomas had been wiped from existence by burning, everyone enjoyed themselves. James was pulling Annie and Clarabel once again on the branchline, Gordon was pulling the express and Percy was pulling the mail. Suddenly, James saw a broken piece of track ahead, he tried to stop but he flung off the rails into a ditch. Edward came to save James, but Edward looked tired and depressed… At night, Edward drove off a bridge to his inevitable death to finally meet thomas again…. *end credits*
His overuse and shoehorning season 8 onwards actually made me not like Thomas/Thomas based episodes much leaking into the good seasons. Its the same with Pikachu in pokemon. Because he’s always there but I like seeing Ash’s other pokemon who are there for the shorter time. Infact the steam team actually made me go off a lot of the characters simply because they always appeared whereas my favourites like Oliver, Duck, BoCo, Stepney, Donald, Douglas etc featured less or gone completely. And characters who should have been expanded more like the season 5 newbies and Caroline and George got nothing after season 5

You know Thomas appearing in episode makes sense giving his name is in the title I mean there lots of other shows that have the main character appear in almost every episode and everyone never complains that the main character appears in every episode And don’t go oh but the railway series didn’t have Thomas appear in every book cause he wasn’t the main character well Thomas and friends is not the railway series there two different entities as unlucky tug would say and I completely agree with him. I mean Thomas was the main character to begin with when they made the show in 1984, even when does or doesn’t appear in every episode it wouldn’t cause he still the main character.
