When he spawns, he will start at phase one where he will use the standard roaming routine. His search precision is 4. Keep in mind when half (or one for a party of three) of the players are indoors, his search precision will jump to 8, allowing him to cover more ground. When a player enters his line of sight, he will start phase 2. Phase 2: recording Alter ego will begin following the first player he spotted, and they will be selected as the target player. Keep in mind alter ego ignores non target players unless in phase 3. keeping a comfortable distance away from them. He will observe them, which is basically him just maintaining line of sight. If he loses line of sight, he will go to where he last saw them, and look for them. If he does not find them in 6 seconds, his hidden anger meter will increase one tick every 3 seconds, and decreases every 3 seconds if he finds the target player again, or if he is in phase four. If he is able to maintain line of sight for 12-16 seconds and his anger meter is zero, he will skip phase three and go to phase four. If his anger meter reaches 5, which is effectively 15 seconds, he will enter phase three. Phase 3: chase Note that he will also enter phase three if he is attacked. Phase three kicks off with an audio queue. He will go back to the standard search routine at an accelerated pace, and a search precision of 13. If he does this for 26 seconds without spotting anyone, he will go to phase 4. If he spots anyone during this, he will charge in a straight line at them, and should he bump into anything, he will enter a brief cooldown where he cannot charge and forget where his target was. He will body and send people flying should he hit them. When he can no longer find people, he will enter phase four. Phase 4: As soon as phase four triggers, alter ego will go to his spawn location (marked his editing station) and stay there for between 10-15 seconds. A subtle but noticeable typing sound will play while he is editing. If he is interrupted by you going in his station, he will pause the timer, stand up off his chair and stare at you. Then, his anger meter will begin ticking up like before. Take note that alter egos anger will increase every one second if he entered phase four by not finding anyone in phase 3. If he finishes his 10-15 second timer, his anger meter will reset to 0, and he will go find a target player. Keep in mind that he will never select the same player as his target player. Once he has repeated this pattern with every single player, he will be satisfied, clearing his station and going to the vent he came through and despawning.

I think once you play it enough, you will feel more comfortable in a solo environment, but the game doesn't specifically punish you for working with teammates at all . :)
Being a coop game, you can significantly reduce the fear factor by just staying with your friends. As you get more used to the game (and desensitized to the many ways you can die) it gets easier venturing off away from the group to explore more efficiently. Or, if you want, chill in the ship and watch the map. With the kidnapper fox removed, it's fairly easy to avoid death in the ship - just crouch and be quiet if you hear dogs outside. And once your party has walkie talkies, a map guy is a very useful member of the party.
