39:35 I love how candid he is. The song he’s referring to is “to be your man” and indeed it was horrible. The video for this song was filmed in my hometown of Detroit MI. I’ve always have been curious as to why it was filmed there. There’s a scene in the video where they show a movie theatre marquee and Kane and the chic he’s with walks past it. That was the old Norwest theatre on GRand River. Kane’s arguably one of my all time favs but that song was so terrible I haven’t seen that video in 30 years and honest down want to go and look it back up lol. I’ve always wondered how in the hell did that song was released and got a video Taste of chocolate, Prince of Darkness and Looks like a job for I’ve heard Kane say he just put them out to get out of his deal I’ve always wondered why he’d put out those which had a ton of album filler just to get out of his deal. Because that killed his buzz. Arguably in 89 he was the top dude hands down

Who had a better case of mainstream and street status at the top than Kane in 89?

Dope interview! Here's a thought: How many record execs can reference the specific lyrical abilities of the mcs on their labels? To hear Fly Ty speak on metaphors and similes is deep. I can't speak on the business practices because I wasn't there but from what I can see, this brother was a Hip Hop dude who respected the culture. There were no weak mcs on his label. Not....ONE.

They were in tune with streets when they also tapped into the latin/black fusion of Freestyle/Club music genre with TKA, Information Society. Born to Roll and the title track are the most west coast sounding joints on that album but its still fire. NYC wasn't complaining about any of the west coast cats sounding like NY and using samples in their shit and Cypress hill had as much respect out west as any other popular groups from the west coast did. I rest my case. Not referring to you with all this btw just in general, the whole thing with Ace "selling out" is stupid, imo. Edit: Wasn't the beat for Born to Roll taken from an east coast group? Why compare your label with Def Jam? Def Jam was a new label when they brought LL on as their Pioneer artist. Rubin and Simmons started Def Jam because they were involved in a situation that was not panning out for them. They didn't have the funds to support ten artist! So of course, this label here, was going to outpace Def Jam as far as record sales. Def Jam's concern wasn't to outdo another label in sales, however they were concerned with building up BANK, which LL was a very lucrative asset for that. He made it possible that DJ was able to bring on another great artist. In the early days, DJ didn't have many artists at one time, but the ones they had, were great; they brought in high numbers.
