We can't thank Lou, Frank and all the staff at Dandy engines enough, Without their motivation we would've been left without an engine and the Harrop Program wouldn't have moved forward! www.dandyengines.com www.harrop.com.au
Absolute legends! But Frank did notice that the RPM had dropped suddenly before that fateful pull. So he suspected something was wrong. It’s easy to dismiss it as “well if he knew, why’d he still send it” but honestly, pressing on was the only thing to do. But yeah, really lucky to not have so little damage and better yet, having such a dedicated crew at Dandy to do that entire rebuild in short order.
Long time viewer, never a commenter but this deserves it. Seen every episode since the beginning. The effort you blokes put in for us viewers is outstanding and I thank you. Seeing Al eventually get comfortable with a camera on him, seeing Woodys videography skills growing outrageously, the set backs, the laughs and the lemons squash’s. I learn something new every time. It’s an absolute delight to finally see you both be able to work on your own dreams, it makes it all worth it. Can’t get the smile off my face. Props to dandy and harrop as well, insane turn around there. Top blokes, the both of you 🏎

what an awesome turnaround ... and when people question why quality engine builds cost what they do show them what a quality engine builder does like these guys at dandy and your mate john with the black ute
I know this project is partly Al's car and partly testing the prototype supercharger, so it's an important project, but the fact his *instant* response to finding out it was - miraculously - just the cam shaft was to say "we can wash it, throw it back together and have it ready tonight" and straight away called up a local guy, got the parts and got it organised in an instant. That's not just experience, that's some serious passion to go with the knowledge and not something you can find anywhere. You're bang on, the guys who can work at a craft for years and years and still be that excited and passionate are worth every penny
I've been watching TSF since the early days. There's been countless episodes that entertained me & made me stoked. But something about this one was special. The selfless help. Same here, I offered to chip in a little coin for any out of pocket but Al being Al said you gotta pay to play the game with the big boys....so I bought a T-shirt instead. Great episode.....can't wait for the next one.
The guys at the Skid Factory, and Mighty Car Mods, have helped me out mentally in ways i find hard to explain. I can now add Dandy Engines to that unexpected short list. Good people all round. Keep being real. And thank you.
I have personally dealt with Lou at Dandy engines and he is an absolute legend. He always was happy to take the time to talk to me about work I had done there. These guys are the cream of the crop when it comes to engine machining and building. I am glad that you guys had the same experience with great customer service as I did. Hats off to you Al for taking it like a champ, it's nice to be kissed on the **** every now and again. Now lets see this bad boy fry some rubber 👌👌
This is the work ethic I expect from anyone that calls themselves a professional. I don't have the means to build engines, but watching these blokes sort this engine out for Al and Harrop was beautiful.
Massive shout out to the crew at Dandy engines for pulling that overtime. Also Al... you want to buy a lottery ticket after that, cause HOW you got away with that failure with only 2 valves, 2 lifters, a gugeon pin and camshaft and NO other damage.. That's just crazy.
I've been a fan of Franks work for many years. I knew he'd sort the motor asap. It's just the legend he and the Dandy crew are. Can't wait for the next one.
When someone like Frank, who's seen pretty much every engine failure mode in existence, has a legit hard time wrapping his head around how this didn't just mince everything into little metal shards.... yeah, it's time to break out the word "miraculous" for sure. And the more I try to wrap my head around it myself, the less sense it makes. That piece of camshaft dropped towards the sump.. and hit the crank in such a way that it flew up the bore... without scratching anything or get pinched.. yet somehow instantly stalled the engine so it didn't get shaken up and down inside the bore..
The engine stopped quick because it broke the camshaft. The distributor is driven from the rear of the cam so when it broke it in effect shut the ignition off.
That felt like about 3 weeks on content in one episode! Bloody awesome. Always impressive how Al never loses his composure when something goes tits up 😂 , looking forward to some numbers next week! 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
This has to be one of my favorite episodes you guys have put out. The look on Al’s face when Frank says “we’ll just put a new cam and some bearings in it and have it back on the dyno tomorrow” What a legend !! love your work boys
That noise sounded like dollar signs..... I'm so surprised the damage wasn't worse.... Massive shout out to the Dandy crew for smashing the rebuild out. Dam that supercharger sounded insane keep pushing Lads this build is going to be awesome 👍👍👍
What an episode!! As much as my heart sank seeing Al's engine explode on the dyno, it gave us an opportunity to see an incredibly experienced team spring into action to get things back on track. Truly a bunch of absolute legends.
Frank's attention to detail is fantastic to watch. Getting all the foundations of the build in order, all the 1%er's and the minute details is what sets Frank and Dandy engines apart from the rest.
Just want to thank Dandy Engines and Harrop. The last to episodes have been fantastic. Sure not good for Al, but seeing Dandy Engines behind the scenes was really impressive. And thanks to Bella.
Great to see how hands on Frank is, Brad's always smiling! Epic turnaround guys! Back in the day I lost a big block but ended up picking a lot of it up off the road, Al needs to go buy a lotto ticket while his luck is running hot!
I can't believe what I've just watched. These boys have just done the amount of work people wait months for...in 7 hours. What a marathon effort from dandy engines. Hadn't heard of them before this but will now never forget em.
This is the best episode so far. The fact that everyone involved is just smiling all the time is amazing to me. I've blown up stock engines and definitely wasn't as happy as you are.
Yes that is true. The huge load the dyno was applying at the time helped it to stop pretty much instantly. The broken piece only fell out after the engine stopped.
My heart heart broke for you guys. But the silver lining is seeing what’s in the engine and all the processes involved. Very impressive, a credit to Dandy Engines, Frank and the guys, very professional. Heart of Gold.
A testament to true character, humble, grit, determination and underlined extensive knowledge beyond a normal engine builder. Impressive learning about grinding the lifters to suit the camshaft angle and watching our true aussie spirit thrive. Well done Dandy and your team.
First off 😫 for what happened on the dyno but then what an absolute legend and great bunch of blokes at Dandy engines for turning such a bad event into a silver lining. Frank went above and beyond and has a heart of gold. A bad start but a great outcome. I look forward to seeing the big block bark next week 😊
Gee what great people you have around you. Kudos to you Al for being so cool about the setback. Frank is a legend and such a gentleman . Thanks for keeping it all real and allowing us to see the process. Al, Think I detected a moment of emotion when you were thanking Frank , it was a great moment mate.
Love the content, you lot are quite a team. As an electronics person one of my career tasks was to wire up dyno's for commercial Mercedes diesel engines, during the days of the Ade engines we made in South Africa. And I got to install a dyno at Toyota motorsport, an engine dyno for engine development. Lots of fun as an enthusiast, seeing rally cars being built. Watching all you professionals work on this channel is a treat, it's top content. Kind regards, South Africa
Frank, what a man. UA-cam or not he gives off the vibe wether the cameras are on him or not he'll go the extra mile to help his customers achieve greatness!
Frank at Dandy helped me out with some very unusual machining work for an odd engine build I did some years back. The machine work was absolutely top notch, the best I have seen with an amazing attention to detail. Glad Al's engine was at their shop when the failure occurred, it couldn't have been in better hands.
Huge effort from Dandy boys…..We got too chat to Frank back when he was on Drag Challenge ….he and Charlie’s work thru the week was impressive….but he still chatted to anyone and everyone without exception…genuinely a honest..down to earth bloke…..legend
I took my '85 Firebird out for a test run the other day after transplanting a T56 into it, and finding my 350 with a flattened camshaft. Replaced a ton of parts, made it all shiny, just to find, after pulling it back into the shop, that I had a trail of fluid behind me. Might just be the power steering fluid leaking everywhere from a bad seal on the steering box. Haven't been able to find time to get it back on the lift, but I have a bad feeling that I'm going to be replacing seals on the T56. All things considered, my day went a lot better than what was seen here. Great video. Love to see it.
All of your videos are great but this is easily one of the best!! Technical explanation is awesome, quality is great, Al is so easy going and Frank is super humble! You can really see how much of a good guy Frank is and how much he loves what he does.
Pretty sure I know who I'd be going to to build my next motor. What legends Frank and the crew are to get this motor back together so quickly. Well done team, this was one of the best episodes to date, not for the carnage, but for the teamwork getting it back together again!
It's amazing how you guys took the news in stride but more importantly the smiles from everyone during the rebuilding process while you guys are sorting out any issues is amazing and how we should all treat each other.
Definitely buying a Harrop e-locker now. Really interesting to see master level machinists and engine builders at work. If nothing else your channel has done good things for the brand.
Dandy Engines - legendary. Amazing commitment from Frank and the team. A lot of grey hairs doing fantastic work. Hope there is another generation continuing this work.
You're such a lucky man Al and you should buy a Powerball ticket ASAP. How that incident didn't turn the block into confetti is a miracle. 👍 Great filming too Woody, very detailed B-roll. 😎
Massive props to Dandy Engines. Knowing a reliable engine builder is priceless. They really pulled out all the stops to get the big block back together again. Can't wait to see the next episode.
As a mechanic of 40 plus years I'd sure is inspiring and brings an emotion of good working men working together!! Not seen much today!! We know Allan knew the camera was running, but it was great to see a composed AL even in seeing that cam and lifter come out with the Piston!! Good on you AL!! All the best from Surrey BC Canada
What a legend! this is why i love the car community everyone played a huge part and the turnaround on this was epic! i was clapping seeing it all go back together!
Dandy Engines 💪 heck yeah what a montage. What a marvellous thing Frank did to pull his team and facilitate this last minute engine build. It was fantastic to see all of the specialist equipment they have on hand to do their work. Most of us would love to spend the day as an apprentice at Dandy engines. We are looking forward to seeing it run on the Dyno. 👍😎
It's amazing how cool headed Al is in the face of a shiity situation. When something not ideal happens to me, I try to think of Al's reaction in that episode where the brand new turbo failed on the Cummins patrol.
This has got to be one of my favourite episodes, with the right team you can overcome any obstacle, Frank totally pragmatic takes it all in his stride.
This is the car community I love. Helping each other out in times of need. A bloody lucky escape! The weirdest failure. It would be super interesting to get some analysis done on the cam.
Awesome video! It is a special time when you get to work shoulder to shoulder with people who love there work and are willing to lend a hand when needed!
The boys at Dandy Engines are legends! Great work guys, and thanks to the wives for putting up with the hyjinx. Seriously, I’ve never seen an engine builder step up like this. And grinding lifters for the correct taper, amazing! I was one of the guys who warned about the lifters after my buddies engine took a crap on the Dyno because of bad lifters, even after ordering a cam and lifter set that was broken in before installing. His is back with a roller cam, but it took months, not a day to get done, took six months to get the cam for a 351 Cleveland here in the US, sad.
it's like when i was seven on a holiday trip in germany. the whole vacation we did a lot of hiking in the woods. i got a tic bite and went to the doctor with my dad. right there he got a heart attack and i was rushed out of the room. we were pretty lucky for sure!
Now you have a Harrop Blower and a Dandy Engines Big Block!!! Killer! Every video I've seen of Frank has been impressive, the guy is just a really nice, knowledgeable person. We need more Frank's!!
What a bunch of legends! Love the way frank says “why are you going anywhere?” 🤣🤣 stellar job and I’m hopeful and full of confidence bow in the fresh build. 💪🏼
That’s a pretty cunning way to get a Dandy engine rebuild, put a dodgy cam in. 😁. It’s heartwarming to see such a great effort from these guys, it’s not like they’re a small mom and pop shop but they still went above what would be reasonably expected to get it done.
I knocked a Full can of lemon squash over when it went bang ! What great support and people who are willing to go all the way to repair a problem that is Not there fault. That's Great guys.
Great Episode! loved the way everyone stayed calm and methodical about working out what went wrong. (maybe a few moths soaking in the lifter oil bucket would have prevented this...Haulass Garage tech tip)
GOOD ON YA BELLA 👍 Great work guys! 👏 Truly impressive work Dandy guys Spoiler below Edit: if you find a lifter in your oil pan it's a small indication that something isn't quite right 😉
Watch out for those lifters that come with comp cams,I’ve gotten a few duds with the last two cam&lifter kits I bought.they sent me replacements right away, just check’um!
I think I have seen every episode of the skid factory to date, and I must say, so far, this has been my absolute favorite just due to the fact that, even tho things failed and the plan changed, the quality of the video, the general reactions, the shots of the work, the music, it was just all spot on and loved every minute of it. AL & Woody we're just so humbled by both teams helping them. You guys come from humble beginnings and I've watched you guys grow on camera and your skills grow over the years but this episode really shows how far it has all come. Just really wholesome content fellas, enjoy a crisp cold lemon squash! Cheers mates
What an awesome group of guys working in that shop. Life long automotive machinist. I can appreciate the hard work and dedication it took to right this ship.
I have to shout out woody for the fantastic editing and commentary on this episode! Was like a short movie Frank from Dandy engines is an absolute legend and you can tell that he lives and breathes engines
Unbelievable to see a failure like that with such little damage. Mad respect to frank and the team for going to extra mile and getting it back up and running so quickly. Love the content and have from the start, great to see the ups as well as the downs. The older you get the more you appreciate the time people give you rather than things, frank and the team are the sort of people everyone needs round them

It's got to be frustrating to have that happen but you couldn't have picked a better place to blow up that engine. What an amazing shop!
Name this engine Amber Turd because it also shat the bed.

Truly unbelievable that engine could be that good after a 5000 RPM full stop! I would say miraculous
When that thing stopped dead in its tracks, that must be what bent that piston pin.never saw a guy be unlucky and lucky like he was before
I mean it stopped immediately too... I would have bet my paycheck the block would need machining at the least

Watch you guys every week. Love your content, definitely some of the best, if not the best. Keep it coming, awesome work, awesome show.
Significant emotional event. Seeing good people together is the true joy of this.
This is the car community I love. Helping each other out in times of need. A bloody lucky escape! The weirdest failure. It would be super interesting to get some analysis done on the cam.
Yeah, definitely it looked like it broke across a lobe !
Awesome video! It is a special time when you get to work shoulder to shoulder with people who love there work and are willing to lend a hand when needed!
Sometimes large base circle camshafts can interfere with stroker applications on aftermarket rods without barely noticing it on assembly
It's like having a heart attack at the cardiac ward.
The right people at the right place at the right time.
it's like when i was seven on a holiday trip in germany. the whole vacation we did a lot of hiking in the woods. i got a tic bite and went to the doctor with my dad. right there he got a heart attack and i was rushed out of the room. we were pretty lucky for sure!
Now you have a Harrop Blower and a Dandy Engines Big Block!!! Killer! Every video I've seen of Frank has been impressive, the guy is just a really nice, knowledgeable person. We need more Frank's!!
That engine run including the sudden stop would make a great ring tone lol. John must be pissed his work was ruined by that stinking camshaft!
What a bunch of legends! Love the way frank says “why are you going anywhere?” 🤣🤣 stellar job and I’m hopeful and full of confidence bow in the fresh build. 💪🏼
Amazing the see those boys put an effort like this together in a short time span. Well done.
Think you've invented a new phrase. 'Unlucky lucky' top job guys. What a turnaround. 👍👍
It’s my first time seeing a camshaft exploding like that, but even more impressive is the low amount of damage that resulted from that.
insanely interesting video. Frank and the team at Dandy are second to none. Absolutely top shelf team and workmanship!
Talk about perfect "turn and burn" after the disaster. Absolute legends, every single one of youse!
Opportunity missed for an 8 ball gag.
Seems like almost a "best case scenario" engine failure.
Woody would have had to be pretty fatalistic to pack the 8ball just in case
@@gowerski yeah I know they are down in Vic but... you never know when you need the 8 ball.
@@gowerski haha Woodys fault. Lol
I've been a mechanic for 50 years and I have not seen a cam break like that before and I'm glad you didn't damage the block
GOOD ON YA BELLA 👍
Great work guys! 👏
Truly impressive work Dandy guys
Spoiler below
Edit: if you find a lifter in your oil pan it's a small indication that something isn't quite right 😉
Watch out for those lifters that come with comp cams,I’ve gotten a few duds with the last two cam&lifter kits I bought.they sent me replacements right away, just check’um!
Extended research and development is always welcome with great guys like these chaps
That’s a amazing effort. So good to see everyone stick around and help each other out
Absolute champion blokes. What a great story Thankyou Frank and team for your awesome work.
What an awesome group of guys working in that shop.
Life long automotive machinist. I can appreciate the hard work and dedication it took to right this ship.
I have to shout out woody for the fantastic editing and commentary on this episode! Was like a short movie
Frank from Dandy engines is an absolute legend and you can tell that he lives and breathes engines
What a bunch of legends, I would never expect that kind of effort here in the states. Can't wait for the next video
Unbelievable to see a failure like that with such little damage. Mad respect to frank and the team for going to extra mile and getting it back up and running so quickly. Love the content and have from the start, great to see the ups as well as the downs.
The older you get the more you appreciate the time people give you rather than things, frank and the team are the sort of people everyone needs round them
Frank is another one of those guys who do what they do with enthusiasm and professionalism.
