Hi I was wondering how a V8 landcruiser motor would go in a patrol and why no one has tried I was told they don't fit which doesn't make sense when they fit a duramax any comments
Active noise cancellation might help knock down some of the engine noise. Pretty much put a mic near the driver's ears, feed that signal into an audio amp which drives a speaker, but swap the polarity of the wires going to the speaker. If that works a bit, you can make it fancier by gutting a pair of active noise cancelling headphones and using the output to the ear cup speakers to drive the audio amp & speaker.
We wish researchers and workers in the technology and engineering department to find plans for the new car industry Because new cars should be flying saucers in the sky and These flying saucers must have three perks 1 / The flying saucers must be self-driving so that everyone can use them 2 / The autonomous driving of flying saucers must be based on artificial intelligence programs 3/Artificial intelligence must rely on the new Google Maps in order to direct the launch of flying saucers to the desired places . Send these three basic demands to the technicians and engineers in the mechanics and technology department in order to make flying saucers
I really enjoy the no fuss approach Al takes to these videos. SOO many cowboys on the net talking rubbish. Al has wiped the floor with them in such a modest professional way. Thank for everything you do Al. I hope you continue along and provide more great info in the future!!! nice work on the edit to Woodrigos
Thats my favourite thing about Al, he was so nervous in the early videos, because he's just a guy that knows what he knows, and does what he does, but also knows when he doesnt know something.
'You're probably getting sick of me talking' NOT AT ALL I'm not a mechanic, have never and probably will never pull a car apart and I could listen to Al explain stuff all day. Passionate no nonsense approach makes every thing Al says hold weight. Always learning from you Al, Cheers
I'd enjoy an occasional podcast with Al & Woody + gang, sharing some of their stories, build successes, failures and cars they've owned. ''The Skidcast''
Like, I'll never have the tools or space to do it, but I love hearing about it. I like to dream that maybe one day I could, and if I did, I would be fucking overjoyed I listened to those vids
Yeah and it’s still cheaper than a 79 land cruiser price and if done right better in every way and there so popular so it’s probably not as bad as it sounds long term.
It all depends on the size of the project. "Small" upgrades around a weekend to bash out can be really economical. Full builds and conversions are rarely economical but they really build the sentimental value.
I don't know- have you seen what new cars cost these days? You can easily spend 45k€ on a VW Golf... a nice Audi sets you back 65k€...you can mess around with a project car a lot for that... sadly in my country project cars are very hard to get legal- and especially engine swaps are almost only done withing a model range
Yep, just take me n my Subaru. I'm 14 years in and it's done more miles on the back of a trailer or in a shipping container than it has under its own power!! Just need to get that EZ30 built, hey Al...? 😉
@@muf1772 "Performance" is when a machine does what YOU want it to. Deboss's assertion that he knows what is best for you is the over arching problem here. You gotta get better at spotting authoritarian cucks and silencing them instead of elevating them.
Definitely a good idea! Puts the build into perspective. Hard to judge how much money goes into a build like this, or the actual time and effort. I can understand some owners don't really want Al spilling the beans on how much they've spent, but would be nice if possible.
Absolutely love the project follow-up. I will almost definitely never even own a patrol let alone do an engine conversion on one, but I still find this background knowledge and perspective fascinating.
Nice to see honest opinions from someone about there own build. Its too easy to just pretend what you did is all spot on and perfect. 4JJ1 would be a good choice in the Diesel world but i reckon a Barra with around 380 RWKW would be tough to beat and the 25 odd grand of fuel you could buy with the savings would go a long way.
Yes barra would have high hp and the power would be in a different band high in the Rev range being petrol this makes it easily down low with minimal stress , but it’s all about what noise our ears like to hear 😂😂
@@jmac822 maybe so but would be highly stressed maybe ?? Where as these big ol donks just plod along mainly in idle , also the 4.5 cummins get good power very low in the Rev range which is where u want it ,
I daily drive a 4JJ1 Rodeo, and have had a TD42T patrol for the better part of 12 years. I wouldn't put a 4JJ1 in a Patrol, While the peak power might give some people a boner, the driveability is not the same.
true and i took the time to learn it and then i only ran from it more. what happens when a pcb board gets fried or the software acts up. with mechanical pump theres no guessing u can see and feel everything that’s happening. switching away from carbs in favor of fuel injection is one thing, but those mechanical injection pumps are stout mechanisms. they tend to be far more efficient as well suprisingly.
It very much depends on the car. I know in the classic minis the electric fuel pumps are the reliable option because the mechanical fuel pumps can fail in a way that leaks fuel into the oil
Not even remotely close to getting sick of hearing you talk about what you know. When someone knows what they are taking about & is willing to share their experience based knowledge, it’s nothing but interesting & enjoyable to listen to. Keep on doing what you’ve been doing. I for one appreciate learning from you. Thanks!!
One of the BMW M57 varients, hard to beat price wise. Tremendous tunability and incredibly strong. Can get them from UK wreckers for pennies. That or an OM606.
I'm a young fella who's been tinkering on an old patrol myself. I'm certainly not knowledgeable nor full of money but still enjoy watching your videos. Appreciate AL's straight up approach to money pits like these and look forward to seeing where they go in the future. Cheers boys
Hey Al! Recently picked up a 12v p7100 5.9L here in the states with headstuds and all for $1500, somewhat recent full rebuild. Going into a barn find 97 dualley that died to the dial pin in 2005. Here in the states. West Virginia beef farmers. Love watching you and really enjoyed the turbo fail video since I experience alot of my own mistakes.
Absolutely love listening to this sort of insight, and the concise knowledge transfer format. Not sure how that works since I never intend to lay hands on a cummins, ever. Just feels like food for the brain.
These are some of best videos with real world costs from experts ie experienced people. Reminds me of my Series 3 Land Rover and the Holden 186 conversion. It was an Aussie thing to do. Thanks Al & Woody
Child hood memories of my friend broadsiding me in a mud pit. Four wheels spinning and the sound of a duel exhausts 350 chevy roaring, just a magic moment. My little LC torana was buried.
GVM and GCM became a problem when the insurance companies started weighing everything that fell out of your 4x4 onto the road after you rolled it with your 87ft van on the back to deny a claim.
And quite rightly so! The vehicle was engineered for a given mass for a wide array of reasons. Brakes, suspension, chassis and so on could all be inadequate. Poor control of your towed loads can also be a real problem, leading, as you say, to your 87' van spilling its guts. As much as I am not a fond a large US pickup trucks, if people are going to tow 3500kg and heavier caravans around, they are likely a far better option.
I live in America, where we don't have (and have never had) the Nissan Patrol, and I have zero intention to ever do an engine conversion like this on a vehicle. But this video is great, I could listen to Al talk all day.
Google M57 bmw patrol. they seem to go great. thanks for sharing your thoughts on this conversion, especially since you have done a couple of different ones. i have had the a duramax also and now a LSA . they are both great in their own right but very happy with the LSA now and prefer it. the ease to work on it, to get parts locally and the milage is no worse than a 4.5 or 4.8 from Nissan and instant power it makes, makes it a very enjoyable 4 wheeler.
I'm currently doing a TB45 to TD42 conversion and keeping the RE4 auto like you did with the red Patrol. Your videos have been an absolute wealth of knowledge and I really appreciate how much detail you go into. I am making it hard for myself by not manualising the auto like you did, but also keeping the ECU and TCM and not going the easy but expensive route of getting a kit from Wholesale Auto or wherever. Love your work guys, keep it up!
ABSOLUTELY CAN NOT wait the Mercedes OM606 build!!! One bloke in Estonia(where I'm from) runs om606 with compound turbo setup with 600hp with full boost at 1500rpm, quickest diesel at one mile challenge with 296km/h. All of this from an unopened engine with over 400k km. Myself owning a stock om603 running on veggie oil and building a turbo M104 inline 6 petrol engine, which is the om606 petrol brother, here in Perth. So definitely looking forward to any 90's era Mercedes tech on the channel! I mean, you have done everything else, haven’t you!
Dieselmeken and BlackSmokeRacing would be a great place to start when looking at Mercedes diesels :) I love this type of video where the job is being weighted and everything told as is. Keep going guys!
Was looking into this a few years back. Went with a 1HDT conversion for my 105 series instead due to availability, ease and cost. Was pretty happy with the result, made 190hp 700nm on 35s and never gets hot.
As someone that spent a fair bit of time doing similar things for a living up until the $$$ of mining were too hard to resist, TSF is one of the rare channels I can relate to that dont have me anxiously pulling my hair out every 5 minutes. Appreciate the honest review from a very knowledgeable fella, with a no-nonsense approach to these more complicated builds.
Been a great build to watch.... Credit to you. Another common engine is a BMW M57 3.0 TI, 6 Speed ZF Auto, All Software Controlled..... Great Economy, Heaps of Torque n Power and Whisper quite... Been done for a decade in Europe
People here in Europe are using the BMW M57 engine. It’s one of the best BMW’s engine ever made and some people also instal the 6 speed gearbox from BMW . It’s a fantastic upgrade for the Patrol but unfortunately it is not legal in every EU countries to do this conversion.
It's a ZF gearbox, not a BMW one. It's the swap I'd go for without a doubt, cheap, reliable, great economy and great power, nothing to dislike about them really
Nice work done. I think a P Pump 24 V still offers the best of both worlds. I combined a 24 V in a 99Ram (got rid of the 53 blck and swapped to a beefy 12V truck engine with solid bed plate and 230 HP from the factory.) I changed the internal components, took some flesh out of the ´24V pistons (exactly like Jeff Garmond recommended it) combined it with the 24V head and a gigantic inline Bosch pump from a SEATEK 10.3 L offshore race engine. With twins, a huge intecooler and some free flow exhaust it made a little shy of 900 HP on the dyno but was so good with EGTs, that I could go with 230 km/h (I live in Germany) for a long time and never saw anything higher than 1280 f before the turbo. I have and H1 Hummer with a 6BT 12 V conversion and s Scout with a Twin turbo 12 V and 1044 HP@ the rear end (beefed up 9") That is a daily driver, even good on Gas and with a 3.0 rear ratio and 20" Wheels I can shock Cayenne Turbo S and Trackhawks on the autobahn. They hate that it´s a Diesel with an historic license plate. If you google "Monteverdi race 2014" you see me competing with a 997 GT2Twin Turbo Porsche on a 1/4 mile race. I have an Airstreammotorhome with a cummins conversion and a Ram 1500 Shorty with a Cummins and just sold my 1998 Suburban with a 12V Cummins swap. In the UK you find those engines pretty cheap and if you combine some practical skils with a good network of used parts a conversion can be done a lot cheaper than 50k. for instance the Scout breaks are obviously not capable to handle a truck that easyly goes faster than 260km/h. Jaguar XKR Rotors with Viper 4 piston calipers was my solution. Way ligher than for example the Dodge Ram SRT 10 brakes and with some manufacturing not outragiously expensive. But a nice, reliable and roadworthy conversion is the BMW 5Series 2.5 L 6Cylinder engine with Bosch rotary pump injection. I have 2 Scouts, a Grand Wagoneer and a Stepside Chevy Pick up with BMW engines. Parts are everywhere, if you stick to the very reliable 4HP 22 ZFtransmission you can have a Diesel Conversion for less than 5 k. My Grand Wagoneer I drive with the BMW engine since 11 years, one of the Scouts since almost 20 years. For German safety laws its important the the conversion could be authentic and done in the US. What very few people know is that this BMW engine was used in the 80s in Lincon continental vehicles originaly
Having done this conversion myself, but slightly different, I’d like to add my 2 cents. Obviously I didn’t do it quite the same as you but it’s definitely similar. I used a 12v 6bt through Texstar automotive. Originally all we were going to do was change all the gaskets, but thought since it was pulled down why not rebuild. Engine cost was $7200AU landed in Brisbane, rebuild was nearly 3k, but only reply once major parts that needed, and replacing all valves and stems. I always wanted a manual, and went with that to begin with, before going through 3 patrol gearboxes and shearing 3rd in all of them. I eventually went to a basic 4l80e, which was functional, but wasn’t what I wanted. Never played with the fuel pump too much, just went 4K gov springs and a fuel plate, but it just wasn’t to my liking drivability wise. Don’t get me wrong, could pull a house down but I’ve just never been an auto man. So I started looking down the path of manual. Ended up with a PaR gearset with custom 1-5 gears ( they have a shoo wheel of short or tall for every gear depending on your needs. They were originally designed for the Dubai 4.8’s with stupid power) and they have actually worked an actual treat! Thai set up also comes with a billet input and output shaft that is considerably bigger than factory to handle the extra load. Considering it only costs about 12k all fitted (including custom HD clutch to suit the shaft, it has honestly made the entire investment worthwhile! Taking out all the costs of doing things wrong, it can easily be done 45k on road with Abrams new motor and gearbox. I tow an OP4 camper as well and dragged that up little red just to be sure it could take me anywhere, and has no let me down. I have since done 8500k around Oz and wouldn’t change my set up for the world. Even with all my weight, fuel consumption is currently sitting at 13.5lph which is ridiculous for a car that size and weight! I personally believe that if I knew what I did now at the start I would’ve saved myself atleast 20k, but would recommend this conversion to literally anyone that will listen to me!
For us Europeans, the 3,2l V6 or the 4l V8 Mercedes engines might be good options for a torque needy application like this. Thanks for the extra knowledge sharing, guys! The hard bit is making it all work long term and refining it.
Davo, have to agree, the 5speed auto and 1hd-fte conversion in my 105 is smooth, quiet and gets it done .. I'm also Gu fan for the suspension geometry and diffs of course .. but like most of us, just want more than what came under the hood! For a second project, I'm on the lookout for a cheap S4 Patrol and I'll do the same again .. You get 24Valve, efficiency, high enough torque to tow whatever, no overheating and long term reliability. Front cut FTE for $12k and if it's done less than 500000k just send it, with a bigger set of injectors and turbo .. No rollin coal!
@@theskidfactory Spot on with the calculation, 30k for the conversion is realistic, plus the donor GU .. makes an end product that is better than either of the brands ever made and less than half price of a new version of either .. IMHO
If you do happen to do this fella’s, the new yanmar Marine engines are a 1hdfte. Instead of paying 18k for one with 500k, 21k for a brand new engine is the way I’d go. As soon as someone makes a 1hd to re4/5 adaptor, I’ll be doing this. Re5 behind the 1hdfte would be my dream car, keep up the wealth of knowledge and future episodes fellas never miss a skid factory vid 👍
Just because it has a P pump, it does not have to smoke. If they are calibrated correctly, they are still a very reliable pump. As Al alluded to, it is probably the choice of turbo that has lead to it being set up to overfuel and smoke. Also if you are considering doing a swap like this be very aware of what vehicle the engine came out of as the pump governors are set up differently for industrial application (all speed governor) or road application (min/max governor). It makes a huge difference for the drivability of the vehicle at the end of the day. And yes, you can have all the HPs in the world but it is torque that pulls you up the road (or out of the bog hole). Overall, loved the project and cannot wait to see what is in the pipeline next.
Ls3 factory cams suck and so do the heads for low end. Stick a btr torque cam (202 duration 111LSA) and ls1 style heads and manifold. Will have better torque around 2k rpm maybe as much as 40lbft. The Australian LS1 cam is even worse for low end. Best factory low end cams are L33 and Lq4. But the btr 202 cam is better then both. People forget that diesels don't rev past 5k. But everyone poops on these tiny LS cams even though the are good to over 5k rpm and most ppl go for something in the 22x and up duration. Unfortunately.
@@tcmx712 Have you ever driven something with a 4 speed that weights 3t plus? Even 2t plus unless you have bulk torque at 1200rpm like Al's it's gonna be doggy. Even with the correct gearing. Really, you are governed by gearing and in hilly burbs mine sits between 1k and 2.5k rpm stop start and up to speed. About 2.2k on the freeway in 4th probably similar to Al's. No idea what gearing to tyre ratio his is? Never said an LS won't do 5k plus. I have a 383 so torque is bit too big for 50kmph side streets at those kind of rpms. Also you can't just nip through the gears with 4 speeds not enough spread so you're always well over the speed limit. Sure mine is better now with the mods but still need more down low.
@@Dan-rg7jj dude op has a 6 speed and ls3 so why you waffling on about 4 speeds hahaha, and you do realise a standard ls3 has more torque at 2000rpm than a v8 70 series does anywhere in the rev range let alone anything that comes standard in a patrol so I don't know why you're saying it needs more torque down low when it moves the patrol a hell of alot better than stock???

@@davydoo81 to each their own. I like to judge engines and cars for that matter by their merits, not by their badge. Saying that those engines are unreliable is simply misinformed.
I put a p pump 5.9 into my 79 ford, kept the dodge running gear but built it up. Can confirm the noise. Couple tricks are oil pan wraps, pushrod cover and valve cover wraps, where most the noise resonates. Made a good difference in mine.
You will probably have 300ft/lb of torque at 1000rpm without the turbo spooling which is why they move on ok but a cummins with snappy response is much more fun and usable and worth sacrificing a few peak HP for. On my Cummins Landy the fuel economy was the same as the 2.5TDi it replaced but it didnt drop off when I was towing which was nice!
A lot of BMW M57 are swapped in Europe, although not done legally as in Australia. Some shops in Iceland do OM648 as it must be easier to find and more modern than the OM606. Thanks again, very interesting. I've been watching your channel since the double unicorn swap and it's still one of my favorite, even after 3-4 years. Keep it coming !!!
Had a good chat to my tuner about y61 engine choices. He’s dead against Barra conversions because they end being done too cheap. Ideally I would just go y62 with a Harrop and leave the y61, but for half the price a Cummins swap is very cool
Tune your AFC to not give as much fuel before boost pressure comes up & you'll cut out that low end smoke & can actually get the turbo to spool up faster. You might need to change the spring or even to several springs within it. If you know an idea of your various boost pressures you can bench test the AFC foot travel accordingly to help speed up parts choices & adjustments.
BMW 3ltr turbo diesel (inc gearbox) is another option, E9* 330D engines. There is adapters to fit to the Patrol 4wd system too. One was just finished in our workshop actually. Goes well and sounds great too!
Nice job. Back in the early 90s I had a 2.4 Hilux diesel that I replaced with a 3.4 direct injection from a dyna truck. Mark’s Adaptors gearbox/transfer, Detroit lockers front and rear, upgraded ultimate suspension and body lift. I so wish I still had that vehicle, it was sensational, unstoppable, just needed power steering.
Turbo Yoda is an encyclopedia of engines and swops, the honest and objective opinions based on actual "been there & done that" knowledge is quite something, the smaller capacity diesel engine swops like the Mercedes OM sounds interesting and seen online they make good power as well so Turbo Yoda & Woody please on the next swop maybe consider this, either way - really enjoy the channel and the passed on education!
I have seen a 3208 in a Ford F250 on youtube. The guy had to do a body lift to make room for the engine. He also had to upgrade the front suspension (more leaves). 3208s are pretty big
Hi Al. First, I have a Dodge Ram with the 6.7, common rail of course, and the 6 speed auto. Now I have noticed the 5.9 powered trucks are Significantly Louder. I am sure a lot of the noise has to do with the difference in the turbos. All 6.7's have the variable vanes on the outlet. When I did the exhaust on my truck, I started the engine up with just the dump pipe in place and was amazed at how quiet it was. The common rail injection also does amazing things with regards to a daily driver, so much more civilized. My truck does not smoke. I have 5 " exhaust, cold air box and a "Smartie" tuner and it runs Great!
Just when i thought i could take on putting a thong slapper from a 79 in my 80, along come al n woody and hit me with a reality check 🤣 Great stuff guys and awsome info keep it up 🤘👍👌
I think a built, 80 series engine is enough! Easier and much cheaper! Nearly finished rebuilding the 1HD-t in my 80, that's been expensive enough. Went nuts though! 130% injectors built pump big turbo. Already have the rest of the necessaties fitted to make it hum. Instead of rebuilding my block I was able to get a Genuine Toyota short block brand new in the packaging.
Al, Thank you for taking your time man. This is something that most people don't want to watch, but should. Thanks again for taking your time out of your day to explain to us normal people to make us less normal :)
Excellent presentation Al. Regarding noise. I have a 6BTA in mine, I halved the noise by surrounding it with acoustic foam. It does not block the noise it absorbs it. It looks like egg carton, dark grey foam. Very lite as well. I think it would work on (under) the bonnet. Buy from foam supplier. Mark.
1HD-FTE. The logical choice for me. Expensive yes. And hard to find at the moment. But there are adaptors available to the patrol gearbox and engine looms. 151kw in stock form or if you want bulk power change to a UFI turbo, unichip q4, +30 injectors 300+hp/1000nm at the wheels. I did this conversion into a 105 series and cost 18k before engine mods. Add 10k for turbo, q4, injectors, airbox, snorkel, tune.
I work at Cummins Darlington in the UK where we make the very 6.7L's you talked about. Incredibly solid engines and can see over 300,000miles easily with regular maintenance.
So I have a 2004 2500 Ram with the common rail, no major mods, bumped the injectors 50 hp when I replaced them at 200,000 miles. Has 370,000 now. I have added a secondary fuel filter and a hydraulic filter for the trans. Love this truck for the fuel mileage, durability and performance, does good skids! Only pulled the trans once for freshen up, pulled fifth wheel camper, tractor and cars with it no issues. As far as patrol Cummins makes a new four cyl common rail as a drop in engine swaps, Jeep’s use them a lot. These meet emissions standards and perform well, not sure if it’s available in Australia. This new cummins is the package I wanted for my 95 Dakota when I first bought it. So if the new 4cyl Cummins is available there I love to know your thoughts about it. Lots of good info here, as always.👍
mate....your honesty is what sets you apart....so keep talking and passing the information on. Would it be safe to say one would have to add about the same amount for labour (assuming someone else is going to fit it etc)? would it fit into a GQ?
Thank you for a well balanced arguement of the pros & cons. I have been weighing up between a 6BT, Duramax & rebuilding& stroking the original 1HD-T in my 80 Series. I think l am now leaning even more towards rebuilding & stroking the 1HD-T
I was about to say OM606 before you mentioned it. Such a better platform over the huge engines like the Cummins. Smaller, Lighter, just as much power with little work, still mega reliable. Got 2 OM646 in mar cars (4 cylinder versions) and they run so great.
I had a facelifted e220 cdi with that engine in it (om646 evo) and it was amazing, so much torque and always willing to go, best part of an incredible car
I have had a Duramax converted GUIV for 7 years now. Its a love hate relationship for me. Most of my issues have been with the built Allison transmission, only done a water pump in the Duramax over that time. Not sure that i would do it again.. but nothing beats it for touring, and towing. I like to tinker with older cars and love the GU patrols. Problem in Australia is what else do you buy? live axle coil sprung diesel auto???? Great to watch Al discuss these engine choices, I know what it cost me to have someone do the conversion, and have subsequently lived through the highs and lows of owning a modified vehicle....great content mate.
Doing a duramax again with the experience of the first one I did is also an option for me. The engine and transmission combo is unbeatable for the price. Mine also had issues with the Allison and they are not an easy rebuild.
Great vlog as all are from you guys! If you have another Patrol available consider doing a OM606 or the later model OM648 (common rail). But if the goal is to go bush on remote areas I would choose the OM606 any day. Stay Safe !
Well that 20 minutes felt like 2. Exactly what we all needed/wanted to hear. I reckon it would be good to go over the young lads Cummins patrol and do a compare of gear he used, costs & issues he ran into Keep up the good work lads 👍
Another great episode. I doubt anyone is sick of hearing your wisdom Al, its time to sit down and learn from the master. Been watching since you were on MCM2, given me the confidence to do my own Turbo V8 conversion in my 4x4 which is going well.
Great video glad you are honest and pointed out the pros and cons and especisally the costs involved I didn't think it was that expensive but the amount of work let alone parts I can see how quickly the costs add up anyhow thanks for the great content over the years and as always of high quality and look forward to each new episode cheers
If the budget was big enough I reckon a Audi V12 TDI engine would get a patrol moving along nicely. Loved the informal wrap up of the build aswell. Legends.
Always good to hear Al talk about the engineering that goes into these projects. Watching a youtube video, you don't really get a feel of the cost of such conversions.. I mean, if there is all that custom fabrication, then it will get expensive if you are not doing the work yourself. And we also need to bear in mind, these things take time as well. It's not something that can get done in a week.. Probably takes months. The one take away from this is there is no BS coming from Al's mouth... well except for the part about Dodge Gearboxes not being good. LOL. I've heard about Cummins powered Ram 2500s getting over 500,000 kms with no issues. It all depends on the maintenance...
Some options I’d consider would be the Mercedes OM606, BMW M57, Toyota 4.5 1VD-FTV Baby duramax, the very well sorted Citroen 3.0L V6TT also used in NAVARA, Range Rover, BMW & gale banks does a version of it, to name a few engines I’d consider into my series 10 patrol,
If money wasn't a issue I'd go the 4.5 Cummins, but to be honest IV been so impressed at how my td42 is taking 180kw 600nm that I'd just get the engine built in a "blue print" style. I think slapping a girdle under the crank and a properly balanced up rotating assembly you could make a very reliable 200kw engine with way less messing about and be a fair whack cheaper! This video will be the go to link to ever FB post about how much for Cummins swap in LandCruiser or patrol.
Never owned a 4WD, only have a vague idea what a 'Cummins' is, why am I watching this? Other than it being entertaining and calming at the same time, I got nothing. Thanks for the content guys, the low-key delivery is fantastic.
50K Australian. Forget about that you built it. Are there not new vehicles with similar capabilities available? I get the built not bought. As stated. Get out a pen and paper. Very informative. Glad to see y'all back in the shed. Thanks.
Yup, modifying a vehicle in Australia isn't cheap especially if you get it engineered too. Depending on what state it can be really wallet unfriendly. The UK and USA are certainly cheaper to do modifications but all those that say they can do a swap for under $5K are thinking they're still in the 90's 😉 I love how you sit there and calmly tell people the way it really is. Dispelling the internet hype is always so much fun to watch 👍
If you had the room for it, compounds quiet the motor down and reduce EGTs. Probably the best option for a single turbo would be a Super 9 hybrid from PDD, but they are not inexpensive (they build those themselves). Use all OEM mounts if you can, they quiet the engine down a lot. I did a swap of a OM617 into a car, it was incredibly loud until I found out that the transmission mount was contacting the frame. The noise dropped a tremendous amount after I made clearance for that mount.
Glad you touched on torque vs HP, most people hear low HP numbers for a diesel and think it is gutless, when the reality is it is far more powerful since it's torque output is far higher and usually at about half the RPM.
Gearboxes can convert high rpm + low torque into low rpm + high torque, and vice versa. It's still ultimately the horsepower (torque * rpm) at the engine that matters.
Until you add external load to the vehicle via towing and your high power 8 speed auto 2l twin turbo diesel suddenly isn't the same. Gearing cannot replace engine torque.
There's definitely a question of comfort. A small engine screaming along at 8000rpm and a bar of boost producing 300hp is going to be a lot less comfortable to drive compared to a huge loping diesel making the same horsepower at 3000rpm, but at the end of the day they'll still both be capable of doing the same amount of work and making the same output torque @ rpm with appropriate gearing. And yes, I accept that the pocket rocket will no doubt overheat and live a short life due to the relative stress it would be under. Anyway, it's a dumb pedantic argument so sorry for clogging up the comments. Great content btw..

We wish researchers and workers in the technology and engineering department to find plans for the new car industry
Because new cars should be flying saucers in the sky
and These flying saucers must have three perks
1 / The flying saucers must be self-driving so that everyone can use them
2 / The autonomous driving of flying saucers must be based on artificial intelligence programs
3/Artificial intelligence must rely on the new Google Maps in order to direct the launch of flying saucers to the desired places .
Send these three basic demands to the technicians and engineers in the mechanics and technology department in order to make flying saucers

This is a really good 'build summary' presentation. I'd like to see something like this with any build.
That would actually be a really Good idea
Definitely a good idea! Puts the build into perspective. Hard to judge how much money goes into a build like this, or the actual time and effort. I can understand some owners don't really want Al spilling the beans on how much they've spent, but would be nice if possible.
Speed Academy does this once in a while but it would be nice if it was more common among the 'project car build channels' in general.
moral of the story everything is expensive hence why we're all on here watching people do conversions
Living vicariously through others is my favourite hobbie.
No, joker, not expensive is subjective and relative. :)
Agree, the 4J would be a great choice with the aftermarket possibilities!
Too true on the 4JJ1. Considering one for a 60 series conversion… or a Barra.
Honestly informal episodes with Al just talking about stuff are some of the best episodes.
I LOVE that Al embraces modern tech. Too many guys afraid to learn. They see all the wires and run for the hills.
true and i took the time to learn it and then i only ran from it more. what happens when a pcb board gets fried or the software acts up. with mechanical pump theres no guessing u can see and feel everything that’s happening. switching away from carbs in favor of fuel injection is one thing, but those mechanical injection pumps are stout mechanisms. they tend to be far more efficient as well suprisingly.
Yep and the new ute/truck things are the only way to do it and still be under that number, without being the only person in the vehicle with no gear.
Hence I bought a new silverado 2500HD to not risk a no payout if something happened when towing the $250k toy
I've done a GVM and GCM upgrade on my 200 Series. I only tow a Kimberly Kamper and it still get's sketchy sometimes.
Agreed ... If your going to tow small houses behind a vehicle, get the right damn vehicle. F truck, ram etc and be safer while doing it.

Thanks, Al, for sharing. I think there are a ton of us that want to learn the details like this. Sooooo appreciate this.
The BMW M57 3litre diesel with the 6 speed auto from an X5 would be a nice conversion
How good is an actual professional talking about modifying cars.... refreshing.
Thanks for the feedback mate, much appreciated.
I might need some of that info……just bought my patrol and I’d like to have a plan in place if it decides to go bang!
For us Europeans, the 3,2l V6 or the 4l V8 Mercedes engines might be good options for a torque needy application like this. Thanks for the extra knowledge sharing, guys! The hard bit is making it all work long term and refining it.
I think i will stick with my factory TD42ti, but if i was to do a conversion on a ZD grenade i would definitely go a OM606

It's certainly not a bad idea but also not cheap, that'd be a $30k easy.
Glad to hear someones conversion cost more than mine! I have just completed an LS3 and 6L80 into my GU and it's now a sweet, smooth ride.

No idea what gearing to tyre ratio his is? Never said an LS won't do 5k plus. I have a 383 so torque is bit too big for 50kmph side streets at those kind of rpms.

Id love to see a small CAT 6cyl or v8 in a patrol. I've seen a 3208 CAT V8 in a 40 something series cruiser so should fit in theory
Trouble is, CAT's are way too heavy, even the later modular engines
Dt360 any day
I have seen a 3208 in a Ford F250 on youtube.
Just when i thought i could take on putting a thong slapper from a 79 in my 80, along come al n woody and hit me with a reality check 🤣
Great stuff guys and awsome info keep it up 🤘👍👌
I think a built, 80 series engine is enough!
The money you save in the wreck cost will be eaten with the conversion. Bite the bullet and buy a HDJ100 wreck and get stuck in.
Al, Thank you for taking your time man. This is something that most people don't want to watch, but should. Thanks again for taking your time out of your day to explain to us normal people to make us less normal :)
This was really great. As an ordinary viewer we rarely really understand the impact of these type of changes let alone the cost. Great vid Al. Thanks.
Mark.
As usual Al, it's a pleasure to hear your no nonsense, zero BS thoughts on the subject.
Mate, your experience is most helpful, The info, informal or not is terrific.
Took a while for this to pop up in my feed. Glad it did. Great video
I reckon it would be good to go over the young lads Cummins patrol and do a compare of gear he used, costs & issues he ran into
Keep up the good work lads 👍
I’d absolutely love to have a beer with Al and just fully talk max shit about cars and engines I love the way he thinks about things.
Some options I’d consider would be the Mercedes OM606, BMW M57, Toyota 4.5 1VD-FTV Baby duramax,
the very well sorted Citroen 3.0L V6TT also used in NAVARA, Range Rover, BMW & gale banks does a version of it, to name a few engines I’d consider into my series 10 patrol,
If money wasn't a issue I'd go the 4.5 Cummins, but to be honest IV been so impressed at how my td42 is taking 180kw 600nm that I'd just get the engine built in a "blue print" style.
Thanks.
Real shit, probably not for 50k, a decent land cruiser is over 100k new as far as Iam aware.
Yup, modifying a vehicle in Australia isn't cheap especially if you get it engineered too. Depending on what state it can be really wallet unfriendly. The UK and USA are certainly cheaper to do modifications but all those that say they can do a swap for under $5K are thinking they're still in the 90's 😉
I love how you sit there and calmly tell people the way it really is.
