  • Kellen Correia, President/Executive Director, Friends of the Hunley Inc, talks about the Civil War submarine, HL Hunley and her crew. (NB: Apologies for the sound. It turns out her mic wasn't working with my new phone. I've had to 'ride' the levels.)

I remember when the Hunley was first discovered. Clive Cussler (the author who financed the search) refused to give the location of the sub to a state agency that wanted to put up a buoy over the wreck 'In order to warn off Civil War artifact poachers.' Never mind that the folks who would do stuff like that aren't generally known for obeying signs, so putting one up would simply be the equivalent of saying "Here I am, come get me!"

The director pretty much cleansed the lab of Confederate history, the CSS Hunley was a Confederate privateer, manned by volunteer Soldiers and Sailors of the Confederate military. Years ago they removed the Confederate flags and many of the references to the CSA. This political cleansing was a thorough as the stripping of the barnacles from the CSS Hunley's hull. It should have stayed buried in the ocean until a better and less political generation could have raised in the furure, who wasn't bent on erasing the history of the Confederacdy.

Hi Greg. I didn't sense any 'cleansing', at least not any deliberate/conscious cleansing. The impression I had is of admiration for such a state-the-art mission undertaken by extraordinary men.

@@mechtraveller1837 Gregory has a point. The exhibit does a very good job of hiding, of not informing the visitor. It's kind of like a bunch of guys did something.

The Hunley was never Properly adopted into the Confederate Navy, it wasn't called the CSS Hunley until after it went out of use.

I thought the same thing…she was careful with her words. I understand why, but I don’t like it.

I think probably because of the appalling sound quality, for which I apologise again! I didn't realise the signal from her mic was not being recorded.

This is very interesting indeed. I think l heard of this somewhere in the back of my mind and the recovery. Definitely a one way trip ! What l don't understand is Gregory Deese's comment. I guess this is America's response to the Mary Rose. I often wonder how the monies needed to recover and preserve these pieces of history are funded. The finances needed to preserve these historic relics must run into 10's of thousands per annum?

Yeah, there's quite a lot of controversy about how the crew came to die. More detail in the post. Link above.
