I had forgotten that you had done this video on the CSS H.L. Hunley, otherwise I would have DEFINITELY watched it back in February on the anniversary of her sinking the Housatonic. Still, I wanted to let you know what a great job you did with this video.

In more modern analyses on how the Hunley sank, it’s more likely all of the crew died instantly upon the torpedo exploding due to the subs close proximity. The light seem from the shore is explained away by rescue vessels flashing blue signal lamps whilst coming to the aid of the survivors from the Housatonic. But good work on the video.

The Hunley was found over 1000 meters from the wreck of the Housatonic, making it extremely unlikely that the sub just happened to drift that far away. Tests and simulations conducted by the US Navy and evidence inside the wreck of Hunley suggests that the crew most likely survived the detonation of the torpedo and for some reason (most likely to evade Union search parties) the crew decided to head away from Battery Marshal to throw off their assumed pursuers. We know for a fact that the crew made a pact to flood the sea chocks and drown themselves quickly if ever unable to surface to avoid a slow and painful death at the hands of suffocation, like the previous crews of Hunley. When the Hunley was found the sea chocks were open, so the crew's death was most likely self inflicted.

There are several theories I've seen as to why it sank, I didn't want to give a definite answer in my video as its still somewhat uncertain. The discussion about this topic is very interesting however thanks for the comments!

@@moosay4606 Yet most of this is explained away, Hunley floated on the surface for several minutes with no sign of life, and floated away from shore with no attempt to correct the boat which lead to it settling down in the position it was found in during the 1990s. The explosive strapped to Hunley’s spar had a total of 135 pounds of black powder and the spar itself was only 22 feet away from the hull and it was back then considered to be dangerously close. When the Hunley came in for the attack it lowered its spar to hit the lower keel of Housatonic which led to the Torpedo being only 16 feet away from the Hunley guaranteeing the crew would die from the blast. All of the crew were found at their stations with no attempt to take action post explosion or to get out. There is 0 evidence to support this claim of the Hunley trying to escape through a strange course, this mythical tale of the Hunley’s supposed escape after its mission is but bunk and facts speak harder then mythology created from conflicting tales from the shoreline of Charleston. A Dr. Rachel Lance who is a consulting professor at Duke University and a Blast Trauma expert proposed in 2020 that the sheer explosion from the torpedo instantly killed the crew onboard the Hunley and caused it to drift away from the sinking Housatonic. I also don’t see anything on a US Navy analysis or simulations. If you want to know my sources for what I am saying here please go below and check them out.

@@hrunchtayt1587 The sea chocks on Hunley were found open on the wreck. It is almost impossible that Hunley, weighing over 7 tons without her ballast tanks full, would be able to float back to the surface without the crew being conscious to pump out the ballast tanks which we know were at least partially full due to the sea chocks being open. Even if we disregard the blue light, it's almost impossible for Hunley to float back up to the surface and drift that far without at least some of her crew being conscious to perform this maneuver intentionally. There's also significant eyewitnesses and archeological evidence to suggest that an 85 pound charge was used instead of the 135 one originally intended. This combined with the fact that the spar would lower down to put the torpedo on the far side of Housatonic's keel, putting a portion of Housatonic's hull between Hunley and the torpedo, it can be deduced that the crew's survival of the blast is not only possible, but more likely than not. This is exemplified by the aforementioned evidence which cannot simply be explained away by theories which completely neglect the fundamental design of the submarine itself.

@@moosay4606 Though I disagree with your theory on what caused both the sinking and death of the men on board, I do give you credit, as you mentioned some valid points. One thing I wanted to bring to your attention is that the men most likely would not have suffocated rather they would have succumb to CO2. Which for all on board would have been a far less painful death then drowning. It just doesn’t seem rational that they would take there own lives.

bit late but the way that they would raise it was by taking out small flatboats with steam powered cranes and sending divers down to secure chains on the craft before hauling it up. and as for the second sinking the reason is because for whatever reason after diving captain hunley was unable to close the Sea cock that allowed water into the forward ballast tank resulting in him dying while trying to pump it out along with the rest of the crew

I am grateful that it has been spared and will forever be true to my country-The Confederate States of America. We are still here. Our voices have been silenced in public but the fire of rebellion has never gone out. Claim may be laid to land but never to hearts.
