    STORY:
    H. L. Hunley, often referred to as Hunley, CSS H. L. Hunley, or as CSS Hunley, was a submarine of the Confederate States of America that played a small part in the American Civil War. Hunley demonstrated the advantages and the dangers of undersea warfare. She was the first combat submarine to sink a warship (USS Housatonic), although Hunley was not completely submerged and, following her successful attack, was lost along with her crew before she could return to base. The Confederacy lost 21 crewmen in three sinkings of Hunley during her short career.

The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
    Some are famous.
    And some infamous....
    ....and some with tragic endings.

My uncle Jesse Thomas was in the 24th Alabama. They pulled his company from the field to work on this. It was built in a church that sat just above the east entrance of the tunnel under the bay. The blacksmith shop was across the street from the church. They had to tear down the door of the church to get it out. He is buried in the Chestnut Creek Cemetery north of Verbena Alabama.

Sorry I made a mistake. The west entrance of the tunnel was where the church sat. Thanks for the video. James

I remember this funeral on the internet, I believe it was 2002 or 2003? The bodies were brought to the cemetery by caisons. The procession was accompanied by Civil War reanactors wearing period uniforms and women in 1863 hoop dresses. It was known as The Last Funeral of the Civil War.

There is a grave to visit… though not all can be seen: his grave is all the ocean, and he got a burial at sea.

Can you imagine being in that submarine and finding out you're claustrophobic? As you're desperately trying to slow your breathing to conserve the only oxygen in that thing, but panic is setting in? GOD BLESS those men!! GREAT VIDEO RON!

I love hearing all your stories, Ron. I remember you saying you are 6’5”, so I’m sure you were really feeling the small enclosed space of a submarine. My husband is a 6’7 retired U.S. Marine and spent a lot of time on Navy ships. He says if he had a dollar for every time he forgot about his height and whacked his head on the bunk above him or on the low ceiling and fixtures, he’d be a rich man. 😂🤣

Thank you for paying tribute to these wonderful heroes that were extremely instrumental in overcoming the ( at that time) enemy. They went out and served knowing they would 100% die for their country. If I’m not mistaken, one of the “men “ was a teenager that begged to join the crew.

Wow! I worked on the Navy Base in Charleston in 1981. I was a civilian filling vending machines for our Navy guys and gals. My oldest child was born there. It sure is a beautiful place. Thank you so much for the fascinating history lesson. I loved history in school but I would have loved it even more if we had classes with this stuff in it.

I made my first visit to Charleston in 2012 and visiting the Hunley was on my list of must. It was such an amazing thing to see in person. I remember finding it more emotional than I thought I would, and nearly being brought to tears when I fist saw the submarine.

Watching this story, it reminds me of the LST325. After WW@, the ship was left in Spain (I could be wrong), but, in 2000-2001, the Navy team that were on that ship, all got together and decided to go to Spain and bring the ship home. They were told they were too old, and couldn't do it. Not being deterred, they went and sure enough, they brough her home! From Gibralta to Mobile, Alabama. Set sail December 12, 200 and docked in Mobile January 12, 2001! My husband was a HAM and he talked to the radio operator on the ship, when they docked in Nassau to repair a hole under water. Just thinking of these fellows, it makes me very proud that they took the task, did the job, and brought our ship home! It's a museum or is being made into a museum. When my husband came back to Georgia (from New Mexico) to take me back with him, we stopped and go to go aboard! What a thrill!!! I made a scrapbook on this.

A great piece of work bringing attention to the story of Hunley. I enjoyed every minute! The tour through the museum was the highlight and was an especially interesting part of the episode. To bring faces to these brave men who gave their lives. Our technology today is just awesome to not only bring up the vessel, but to find the coin, the needle and the bandana after so many years under water! You did a wonderful job of bringing the Faces of the Forgotten to life from this moment in time. Thank you for your hard work and dedication. Also, Thanks to Bruce Littell for his service to our great country.🇺🇸

Wow, what a great story, Ron!! I, too, had goose bumps! I love civil war history and read and see everything I can re: that era whether union or Confederate. So fortunate that Clive found it and that all could be raised intact. The reconstructed likenesses of the men are incredible! Thank you for taking us along on this journey. 👍😃

Just got to watch this and it was exceptional. I remember when the Hunley was discovered, also the painstaking work that was done to create true likenesses of the men found inside. I did not know the specifics of how they died and found this to be very interesting. Hopefully, it was a quick death. I remember hearing that they were all in place at their seats, as you said, no evidence of scrambling for the hatch, etc. That kind of confirms for me that they died quickly. Thanks again, Ron, for a stellar experience!

I saw the program that showed the women when she uncovered the coin. Pretty neat. You have to remember the story of the coin was just folklore, they did not know if it would be there. They were only engaged to be married when she gave him the coin for good luck when he left for his first service.

you are now an incredible documentary film maker sir in a total complimentary way... what a beautiful cemetery down there .... this was absolutely priceless for me , my father told me this one story when i was a young boy about a ceremony the us submariners hold for the fallen on the anniversary of the Thresher sinking ....he had many stories about being frightened during deep dives and would go into detail about the origins of submarines and that the first submarine was from the south and that it was lost and never recovered......but then in 2000 when it was official he was overjoyed by the discovery and made it one of his lifes missions to head down here pay his respects unfortunately he passed before this was able to happen.....in a very serious way you have given me fulfillment and closure with this amazing adventure... I'm devasted I missed this live dude you are one of the great ones Ron thank you

I remember when the HL Hunley was found & the big celebration when it was brought up. Those men deserved to be placed to rest. Obviously, the confederacy was on the wrong side of history but those soldiers were doing what they had to do. Just like any war, our veterans deserve respect. I've seen people protest Iraq soldiers funerals firsthand and it's disgraceful. It doesn't matter your personal views on the war. They earned a proper burial and should be allowed to rest in peace. Thank you for this beautiful memorial video.

As someone who really doesn’t like squeaky sounds, thank you for lowering the volume while you were cranking that manual hand crank. 😂 I was prepared to wince.

Oh thanks for noticing, I lowered it down from 100% to 10% and it still was annoying. Lol

As I was watching I pictured the men with oil cans doing their best to keep the bar lubricated so as to not only keep the sub as stealthy as possible, but to keep their sanity as well. That sound would drive anyone crazy after a few minutes of being inside of a sealed metal tube with that awful noise reverberating off of the walls, which would amplify the sound even more. That had to increase the men's anxiety and discomfort to an unbearable level.

I remember watching a McGyver episode where he reconstructed a face on a skull using pencil erasers. It was pretty cool and not far off from the real process where an artist will reconstruct a face based on bones and muscle tones using clay. There's a few youtube videos on it. It's fascinating.
