  • Hello guys and gals, it's me Mutahar again! This time we take a look at the big surprise development that has effectively banned TikTok unless it chooses to divest itself or leave one of the biggest countries. It has one year and while I have no doubt Bytedance will put up the biggest legal fights it can, it's scary to think now that whole apps can be banned in one of the most free nations in the world. Thanks for watching!

As someone who despises Tiktok, the potential ramifications of this ban make me worry about the internet eventually becoming "bordered". Regulated by every country to the point where contact with people and websites outside of one's country gets put behind restrictions put in place for "security". In a way every country creating its own "Great Firewall" even if they don't censor internally. Perhaps an absurd worry, but the ban doesn't entirely help.

Although I don't think Tik Tok should be banned, comparing Tik Tok to other similar apps and saying they handle data exactly the same is just false equivalency. If the US government wants data from a social media company, it is extremely hard to so. Apple has fought the US government several times to retain their data and won. Even if let's say a social media company you use gives your data to the US government, you can fight that in the courts if you so wish. In China, it is literally the law that if the Chinese government asks a social media company to hand over their data they MUST comply. Not only that, but it is also required by Chinese law for a member of the Chinese Communist Party (or CCP) to be on the board of every company in the country. If you want to get your data back from the Chinese government, good freakin' luck, at least with the US government you have a chance. At the end of the day I think people should be allowed to make their own decisions, including using an app that is required to give their data to the Chinese government, but nonetheless people should still be aware and not just assume all social media apps are the same with data handling.

I draw the line with an app if the country of origin doesn't use/bans the app from their own country, it probably isn't worth anyone else using either. China/Tiktok have no stake in North America, therefore no real way for them to effectively be punished for violating laws and paying to promote crime, as they already have with the Kia iPhone charger theft videos, instead of removing the videos, they went viral and even got monetized with ads.

A good example is the ACTUAL unconstitutional bill called the NFA act and Hughes Amendment of 1936, which finally had a new clause in 1986 that banned newly manufactured full auto weapons from being sold to private citizens.
