Fuji GF 23mm Thoughts After 5 Years Is It Worth The Price

- I purchased this Fuji medium format GF lens almost 5 years ago. after years of using it, was it worth the cost to purchase it.
Medium format is expensive and even though it is more accessible with the Fuji GFX system, is the 23mm F4 lens worth the price.
Here are my thoughts about this lens after using it for years, a few images, and whether I think it was worth the investment.

I watch this 1 year after it was produced and I can only totally agree with you. One year later, though, the 20-35 is now on the shelf. This is indeed another superb GS lens with the versatility of a zoom and optical characteristics mostly indistinguishable from the 23mm. Since I picked it up the 23mm has taken a back seat. What I would love to see from Fuji is a 20mm range prime with an F 2 or less for astrophotography.
Thank you for the comment. I completely agree. I really love the 23mm, and at the time I did this video the 20-35 was not out yet, but the zoom is a nice addition and super versatile when you are trying to pack your bag to go out.
You made me day dream a little about a super wide, super fast prime for astro work. That would be amazing.

Totally agree.! Such a great lens and it works so well with the Fuji GFX 50s.
@@marshalljvanderhoofphoto yes! I didn't have it yet when I had my 50s. At that time I still had the 45mm and 110mm. Now with the 100s, it works without equal. I have used it for options outside landscape imagery as well. Wonderful lens. Clean, crisp, distortion and any aberration free!!

@@marshalljvanderhoofphoto Yes, the in body image stabilisation within the 100s adds to the value and usability. Hand held street use becomes a fun urban sport hehe.
Picked this up instead of the 20-35mm lens. Bought it from a Japanese camera shop in Tokyo for about 950 USD. They had the zoom but I couldn't pass up a deal!

This was helpful experience, thank you. Going to wait to see how the upcoming GF 20-35mm looks, but the 23mm seems to be worth it. Can I ask, with the 50mp sensor, have you noticed any purple amp glow/noise around the image edge when raising the exposure of your astro shots? It could be that I'm expecting miracles from the f4 on the 32-64 and pushing the files too much.
Really hoping that some 3rd party company steps up to make a fast ultra wide for astro soon.
Glad this was helpful. The 23mm does a good job of not producing a lot of purple fringing for night/astro photog. I have very little problem removing any noise/fringing in post. That said, I do try to keep the ISO at 3200 and mostly silhouette for foreground to limit noise. I haven't really pushed the lens with higher ISOs to see where the noise becomes too much. I also attempt to raise the ISO as little as possible for any digital camera system, because as the ISO goes up you start losing colors. The f4 is somewhat limiting for astro shots regardless of whether it is the 23mm lens or the 32-64. It would be great if there was an f2 or f2.8 wide angle lens just for that purpose even if it was manual focus to keep the size and cost reasonable. I'm sure it would be a very large and expensive lens. Hope this answers your question. This is a great topic and I can totally geek out on the pros and cons.
Thank you. Very useful and concur. As a point of interest I have recently start to use a Sigma 14-24 2.8 EF mount (with adapter) and found it quite good for astrophotography. Can’t go below 18mm (respectable 14mm equivalent in 35), it is very good with the essentially no coma and resolves quite well on the 100s. In addition, the 2.8 allows to get decent sky exposures with 10 seconds at is 6400 and up with good image quality after stacking
@@icogicog8287 Thank you for the information! Good to hear that the Sigma lens works well for astrophotography. I am a big fan of using adapters to use lenses from other systems and even vintage lenses on the Fuji GFX system.
What about the 30mm and the 120mm macro? I’m loving both
That is awesome! I love the 120mm as well. It so so amazing and versatile, I love the macro function. I haven't used the 30mm yet. Good to hear that it comes recommended.
