    The new Fujifilm GFX digital medium format system has a new lens, the ultra wide GF 23mm f/4 R LM WR. This 18mm equivalent lens has a very complex 15/12 design with 2 aspherical elements, 2 LD elements, and a single Super ED element. It has a 9 blade circular aperture, 82mm front filter thread, and is 845g in weight. This lens is a beast. It's main use will for architectural and landscape photographers, although I dabbled in some street and portraiture as well. Yup. How did the lens perform? Check out this video review, as well as my written review on my blog:

    *This video was shot on the Fujifilm X100F using Provia film profile. -2 shadows, -2 highlights, -2 colour, -2 sharpness. The video was slightly out of focus with too shallow depth of field (f/4). Edited in iMovie on MBP 13" 2015.

    ***As always, thanks to Helen and Florence of Fujifilm Canada for sending me the production copy of this lens so quickly.

    I like your T-shirt 👍 now I’m in Japan for holidays and visiting my wife’s family quite near of Osaka city.
    Anyway, I love your pictures, I’ve noticed that the quality of the video has increased or it’s also the light at the moment you were recording?
    Absolutely astonishing photos. Well done Taco, you are a great professional

      thanks, It's the Hanshin (Osaka) Tigers collaboration t-shirt by Uniqlo. My brother gave it to me the last time I was there. As for the video quality, the light was great and I used shallow depth of field, although I was slightly out of focus. Next time I'll stop down to about F/8 to make sure there's enough depth of field. Thanks for watching and commenting

      thanks for watching. Yes the GF 23mm is a lens I didn't think I would enjoy as much as I did. It's still too big and heavy to carry around all day though. It's definitely a tripod lens.

    Beautiful images with that lens. I'm excited by the lens roadmap for the GFX......even though I've yet to actually make a final decision on purchasing the camera yet. I've loved using it and it's evident to see from your images the quality it can produce. Great little review and bonus points for shooting it with the 100F :-)

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 років тому

      Yes I love the images coming out of the GFX, but no love for the size and weight. I've said this to all my peers who shoot for a living, if you shoot with medium format you are put in an elevated group of photographers. Back in the film days it was true (those who shot weddings with a Hasselblad vs a 35mm camera), and it's still true today, but to a lesser extent. It's great marketing, but also you definitely up your game when it comes to resolution of your deliverables to your clients.

    • @kevin_mullins
      @kevin_mullins 7 років тому +1

      Oh yes, I totally agree. Where the camera sings for me (from a business point of view) is in the prints. I've never seen print quality like it and for my Day in the Life and Social Doc clients who almost always have prints it really does step up to the mark. I've never used MF before, so have no reference point regarding size etc - though to me, it "feels" roughly the same as my old Canon 1D and the 85fmm F1.2 lens. If the images from this camera are destined for compressed web use, then I think it's a bit of a waste. Editorial/magazine/wall art etc is where I think it does stand out.

      Thanks. If I may just add, this lens is very well corrected for distortion. I was surprised how the middle of the lens didn't appear as distant versus the XF10-24mm in the 12mm range. Although technically the same field of view, the GF 23mm had superior correction for distortion.

    Great audio! Didn't notice any airplanes.
    Probably the lens I'm most curious about, since I really enjoy my Nikkor 18/3.5 Ais, who magically keeps all the lines straight.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 років тому +1

      the GF 23mm is one of the most optically corrected 18mm equiv lens I've ever used. From an optical design standpoint, I heard it was easier for Fujifilm to design this ultra wide lens using the digital medium format versus doing something similar with the APS-C cropped sensor platform. I know for sure that it's optically superior to the XF10-24mm lens at 12mm. I've done the comparison. It's as if the centre of the lens feels less distant, less barrel distortion. The XF zoom obviously has optical compromises to make it that way, but the distortion has a moustache distortion effect. It's a bit odd...

  • @01mrlek
    @01mrlek 7 років тому +1

    Enjoyed the video. It is medium format so the weight and size of the lenses is to be expected. The portraiture looked weird as it would with an 18mm lens, The landscape and architecture stuff looked nice but i wish you had given more information about the amount of detail available in the files compared to 35mm. Anyone seriously looking at going to MF knows that there are going to be positives and negatives.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 років тому +1

      thanks yes, I do not recommend the GF 23mm lens for the GFX for portraiture. I just did it for fun. It gives a certain visual effect that some may want to try (think playful album cover of a band), but as a general rule, it's a landscape and architectural lens. As for info on file size, this video is about the lens, not the format. I did link at the very end of the video my first impressions of the GFX system as a whole, and in that video I do talk about all the technical information.

    About to push the button on this, so would like your views on the lenses. Was thinking 45, 63 and 110, but was curious about how the zoom fitted into this.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 років тому +2

      I really like the zoom because it hits all the focal lengths that I typically use. However, compared to running around with a GF 45mm and GF 63mm, there's a huge size and weight difference. The GF 32-64mm is a big and heavy lens. It's not really a walk around lens. it depends what you shoot, but if you want to keep your kit light and compact, the GF 63mm is as light or lighter than many full frame lenses.

      It is 4K capable, but Fujifilm has disabled it for both the X100F and X-Pro2. The X-T2 and X-T20 can both do 4K.

    I liked it before I watched it, then after I watched I unliked to like again.
    Stupid thing I noticed: Camera Girl likes curved cap, you prefer flat.
    I like the caricature/cartoon effect that a wide angle gives on portraits. Those were nice. But, man… those landscape photos! Beautiful!
    Did you play with the Hasselblad X1D back at that time when you interviewed Michael Kenna? How those compare to each other? I never got close to any of them, I have the impression the X1D is a more compact body.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 років тому +1

      Ha ha, thanks man. Yes I like the flat cap, but that's only in the last few years. I was curved since I was a kid, which goes back to the 1970s :-)
      Ultrawide portraiture is fun, but yes, it's more for an exaggerated effect. I can see artsy portraits, album covers, things like that. Most 'normal' people won't want their portraits taken with this lens.
      I got to play with the pre-production model of the X1D. I currently have a friend in town who has it, and I've had a chance to play with it. Image quality is fine. The OS is very finicky, and the leaf shutter is very noisy. It's not as refined as the Fujifilm GFX, but understandably so. The GFX is using a refined 3th gen processor and OS, Hasselblad had to start from scratch on theirs.

    I am quite, quite disappointed with this lens. I returned today for the 2nd time the Fuji GF 23mm f/4 with the failure "Turn off the camera and turn on again". And this happened twice by having had the Fuji GF63mm f/2.8 first on the GFX and taking pictures for some hours. After switching to the Fuji GF23mm f/4 and taking shots for a while, this failure came up. And the failure goes with the lens then, means, the failing lens also does not work any longer on other GFX bodies. Two times now. But Fuji keeps telling me all ok with the lens. I have to say, that is ugly, it is horrible at this price point, my perception is that Fuji Tech Service here is run by stupid morons and it is disturbing my work a lot. Now, I delivered my GFX and the Fuji GF 23mm f/4 to Fuji (per request) and will hopefully get it back in one week with a clear and unambiguous explanation for this. Maybe it is a lens issue, maybe a camera body issue. I want an explanation and fix from Fuji now, otherwise this GFX system goes back.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 років тому

      I'm sorry to hear you're having issues with either the GF 23mm or the GFX body, or perhaps it's the combination of both? I've been shooting with the GFX since the pre-production body, and I've never had any major issues with the firmware at all. I have other friends and colleagues with the GFX as well, and none of them have the issues you're mentioning. Perhaps you're right and it's the body itself, considering it happened with the GF 63mm lens too. That's unfortunate.

    • @Stefan1968ful
      @Stefan1968ful 7 років тому

      No, it did not happen to the 63mm lens. Only the 23mm lens. It happened two times with the 23mm lens when I used the 63mm first for some time and then switched to the 23mm lens. Let's see what Fuji is saying, that really seems to be repeatable. And you know what? Fuji recommended me not to change the lens from 63mm to 23mm on the GFX body they gave me as a temporarily replacement until by GFX with the failed 23mm has been returned. Seems to be they are also not sure about that...

    • @Stefan1968ful
      @Stefan1968ful 7 років тому

      Today I returned my Fuji GFX50s plus Fuji GF23mm and the Fuji GF63mm. Because Fuji insisted on that when they received the camera it was working together with the "failing" Fuji GF23mm lens. It is enough, both me and also the folks at the local Fuji dealer experienced this issue. We taped it also on video. Fuji is selling actually all of us as stupid obviously. I am done with Fuji, the GFX50s I cannot recommend, it is not a stable pandnreliable roduct and more important, the Fuji service sucks here in Shanghai. I will go back to Nikon, good is that the Nikon d820 is coming. Never had any issue with Nikon, not their products, not their service. Hands away from the Fuji GFX50s, that's my recommendation. At least ad long as it is such an instable and unreliable product.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 років тому

      I'm sorry you are having such a horrible experience with Fujifilm in China. From what I remember, there is no official FUjifilm in China, you are dealing with an authorized distributor of Fujifilm in China. There is a difference when you are actually dealing directly with Fujifilm themselves. I can tell you that I've been in the photo industry for over 25 years, including working 10 years at Kodak. I've dealt with almost every photo manufacturer directly or indirectly for 25 years. I'm saying this because Fujifilm is right up there with the best customer service I've ever dealt with and I'm extremely disappointed you had such a bad experience. I will forward this to Fujifilm Canada and have them forward the information to corporate in Japan. Thanks for sharing your experience but I'm happy you are looking forward to getting a new Nikon DSLR. The D500 is good too, but it is a cropped sensor.

    • @Stefan1968ful
      @Stefan1968ful 7 років тому

      Well, I am using also the Fuji X-T2 and I never had any issue with this device. That was also the reason why I decided to go for the Fuji GFX50s. But what I experienced here is actually not good. It's a nightmare. The first time, the Fuji GFX50s, or better the 23mm lens failed while I was on a shooting. How ugly was that. The 23mm lens got stuck with the error message 'turn camera off and on again'. I had to switch back to the 63mm lens that moment so save some parts of the shooting at least what was ok but I missed some important shots. When I was back to Shanghai I returned the 23mm lens which was till not working at that time. Thanks to the local Fuji dealer, he gave me immediately a replacement for the 23mm. That worked fine for some days. But then it happened again, good for me not during a shooting. And again, I remember that I performed the same sequence of using the 23mm lens first for some hours, then switch to the 63mm lens, take shots for some hours and then switch back to 23mm again. Now the probability increases that this failure occurs. And it happened then after I switched the camera off (during a pause) and then on again. The 23mm lens tilted (turn camera off and on again failure happened). I went back to the dealer, we taped it and sent both lens and body to Fuji here. Guess what, the feedback was: all is working fine, no problem. I also filed this complaint to Fuji on their official website some days ago. No feedback so far. Not even a confirmation that Fuji received my complaint. Sorry, but I simply don't think Fuji takes issues from single users that careful here although this is a very expensive device. I would be more than grateful (I can also provide my personal email address) to get at least an answer why this happened as I am sure I treated my gear well (I am not a beginner at all). My personal assumption is that this is either a hardware issue or firmware bug of the Fuji GF 23mm 4.0 lens. But I have no proof and Fuji does not provide any help here obviously in China. What a disappointment. Still thanks a lot for your support. I still want to believe this does not stand for Fuji. BTW: both lens (23mm, 63mm) and GFX50s body were on latest firmware.
