1700miles in a Tiny Speedboat - Part8 - ENGINE FIRE

  • Before venturing out onto the water to continue our 1700 mile journey around the coastline of UK there's a bit of engine servicing to be done... and it doesn't go entirely to plan.
After fully servicing the old Honda outboard I manage to set the thing on fire, lessons were learned.
I'm attempting to take my tiny rigid inflatable boat all the way around the UK, it's going to be trickier than I originally thought.
All the action in this episode takes place in Devon. We service the 30hp Honda outboard as well as the 3.3hp Mariner two stroke backup engine. I also visit Kit's house on Dartmoor where he is restoring an old Devon Longhouse. I manage to get out to see some sights and visit Grimspound, an old Ironage village right in the middle of the wilds of Dartmoor.
Delightful piano accompaniment by composer Angus MacRae who has written an entire score inspired by the original theme tune:
    / angusmacrae
You can listen to the score on Soundcloud: / the-goodwin-variations
Main theme re-arranging and recorded by the synth wizard Woody:

TIP: I have removed hundreds of bolts such as the one stuck in the block. Start out by punching a hole in the center. Use a 2mm drill bit slowly, while using lube (to not overheat it. chromium is one of the hardest metals there is) to drill it out untill you feel you've gone through the bolt. Then go to 3mm, 4mm and finally 4.5mm for an m6 bolt. then you start using your bolt extractor. Use a high quality one (I've used the same one from Würth for 2 years). Now you need to heat the aluminum around the bolt with a propane torch ( aluminum expands a lot, the bolt not so much) and then immediately spray some wd-40 on it. The wd-40 will penetrate into the crevices around the bolt, and dissolve the salt. If it feels like your extractor will break, drill your hole out to 5.2mm and thread it as a plan B :)

Before storing - rinse out the saltwater and drain off fuel. Nowadays the Ethanol in petrol (approx 5%) goes off after a few weeks and can gum up the carbs if left overwinter. You can get fuel additives to help prevent this effect.

Brilliant episode, thanks Harry, Years ago a friend of mine was servicing his inboard Petrol engine, he removed the fuel filter and drained everything into a milk carton, which he left next to himself, whilst putting it all back together, he dropped a spanner into the engine, which caught the solenoid and gave a massive spark, which ignited the milk carton full of fuel, it was so bad he was engulfed in flames, and had to jump into the dock, the boat was very badly damaged.

Entertaining video as always, 19:56 stainless into a alloy block might become problematic for future servicing, galvanic corrosion, the bolts may snap again and they’re harder to drill through compared to mild. Copper grease might be worth a try to protect your threads and act as a sacrificial anode.

Excellent video. Kudos on the sound track. It makes your video infinitely more watchable than almost all other channels. Also kudos for the very real mechanic work! You’re a better man than me. I would have bailed ten times for a pro or a new one. Cheers from Texas!

Fire has to be every boat owner's nightmare. You handled yourself well, and had the presence of mind to remove the fuel tank to a safe area. Thankfully no one was hurt beyond a singed hand (hope it's better now). Checking the float bowl drain screws will be a lesson you'll never forget too.
Can't wait for the next leg of the journey. Hopefully you'll be stopping by Lynmouth and having a look at the cliff railway?

Glad to see you back on the water Harry - looking forward to seeing you and Goodwin up here on the NE coast of Scotland in time. Well done with the engine service, thought at one point you'd bee looking for another boat because you came close to melting Goodwin! Thanks for the channel.

Really pleased to see another video from you Harry, I’ve been looking forward to your next instalment as they are always so uplifting.
Well done on saving the trusty Honda and not just giving in and re-powering the boat. As an aside though, if you want the transmission to make it the rest of the way you might want to chew the seals on the output (prop shaft) and input seals as water mixing with the gearbox oil will wear bearings and gears pretty rapidly. If you catch it in time your lower unit could last another few years.
Great content, thanks for taking he time to share it with us all, and hope my advice doesn’t cause offence. :)

One of the best series of videos I've seen for a long time and literally watched all the parts in one go. Glad the engine (and your hand) were both fine. Looking forward to the next part and hopefully see you if/when you pass/visit Scarborough and the Yorkshire coast.👍
