(plus we might have been stuck with the puerile Mechanix lyrics, instead of the still silly, but less outright stupid lyrics of Four Horsemen)

Noticing yourself moving you head to music is part of what inevitably attracts people to heavy metal when they first become exposed to it. But you definitely learn to do it, even if you're not consciously practicing it. When you're a young kid and you're getting your first exposure into the heavy metal scene, you notice the other people headbanging around you and you take influence from that. When you're on stage enough times, you notice a lot of things about the audience. One of them is that groups of friends almost always headbang the same way. That's because they subconsciously learn and refine the techniques of their friends. So yeah, while the act itself may be inherent (dancing is inherent in humans, and headbanging is, after all, a form of dance), people definitely learn to do it better as they go along.
The proper way to headbang is however the hell you want to.

Any way of headbanging is good as long as you don't look like you're giving head. She is not that bad, but she could pick up the pace a bit.

In 1985 I was put in mental institution for 15 months. Because of this song it was my friends and mine favorite, 2 friends visited me almost every week, no other " patient" had any visitors but family. Studies show mental patients who's friends continue to include them have a higher than 85% of returning to a productive life. I worked my way off disability work full time bought my own condo. Thank you Ron and Kathy AND METALLICA.

My wife and I danced to "Nothing else Matters" at our wedding. It was our first dance. Every time we hear that song, we stop all what we are doing in the moment and just look at each other and smile. We have been happily married going on 14 years.

It makes me smile to see someone discover the beauty of metal. I discovered Metallica in 1986, shortly after Puppets came out and I never looked back. I was engulfed by all things metal. There are a lot of people who judge before ever giving metal a chance. Most of it is more than just screaming. Thank You for giving it a try. Hope you discover more gems. Once you are done with your Metallica journey, give Pantera or Slayer a go.

I personally think that was their best era as their songs had a more personal connection to them and also Hetfield's voice was absolutely on point too because he'd started doing proper vocal exercises after nearly wrecking it in the early 90s
Thats's probably the best song on that album. I was in high school when it came out. Waited for that day big day and drove to record store (my parents did) . So different than the previous stuff.
Until It Sleeps is so underrated. Such an intense and somber song.
I actually love 90's Metallica almost as much as 80's Metallica (especially Black and Load). Where they lost me was St. Anger.

Metal music is potential energy and when you combine it with a human who is open and listens it becomes kinetic. About 20 seconds before you said something I said to myself: We're going to turn her into a head-banger; LOL. Everybody moves their own way so no self-consciousness, we're just glad to have you join us :)
Some of us grew up accumulating unexpressed anger. This music was a way for me to tap into the intensity and let out the anger without directing it at someone else. Their song about someone institutionalized helped me with my daily life. Keep yourself safe (and sane :) while we ride out the covid.

Tbf there was something special about Cliff Burton. I don't know exactly what songs he did/didn't write (who bothers to check the credits) but early Metallica had a lot of influence from outside of music (Creeping Death, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Sanitarium, etc. ). And I feel like Cliff had alot to do with bringing those types of things in

I work in a mental health crisis clinic. Interesting how my understanding of this song has evolved from when I heard it as a teen. Back then I was just blown away by the instrumentals. Now I can empathize with the emotional message of the song. Fortunately, we don't do mental health like it was in OFOTCN, but there is certainly still room for improvement.
I remember when this album came out. I was 15 and was so blown away. Great to be a teen in the 80's. Greatest music era ever!

Jesus the time sure flies. I remember back in the summer of 86 hearing this album for the first time going into 6th grade. It was the game changer for me. Changed my life hearing this band. They actually saved my life. If it wasnt for James Hetfield i might be dead. That's the truth. This was before computers in everyone's house and no internet. I found out about Metallica thru a older friend of mine who died that exact same summer he introduced me to my favorite band. RIP Darren every August when I listen to Master of Puppets I think of my good friend who died way too young high on acid and wrecking his three wheeler in a parking lot smashed his head into a curb and his brains flew out. The stain on the parking lot is still there 34 years later right in the McDonald's drive thru. Sorry for the graphic story but it's the truth and I could have ended up like my good friend. I miss him and just like him another good friend who loved Metal like me died on the 4th of july by hit and run and I'll never get to see him again either. All of my close friends are gone but I still have my memories of them and listening to this life changing band for me. People always say why do you like metal so much? I tell them it saved my fuckin life you don't understand unless you been thru what ive been thru and Metal saved me. I used to do huge amounts of cocaine and booze and in my 20s even though I was productive and always took care of my priorities I would go on 4 and 5 day binges and people wouldn't see me for days id be in a different world but I always had Metallica there. And when James went thru his exorcism of his demons in 2001 i did the same thing too. I didn't go to rehab i just quit everything and changed my whole life. I quit my job and quit hanging around with the friends i would use with and I just started working out every day and just stopped smoking cigarettes drinking booze and alcohol, no more Cocaine and smoking weed, snorting coke all night thru the morning. Done. May be i shouldn't be posting this but im not ashamed of it because i chose to do it, and I chose to stop. Im glad I stopped because like i said all of my "friends" I used to hang with are gone. Im only 45 but when you burn the candle at both ends like that if you keep doing it you will meet the grim reaper very soon. I quit in my 20s so that's good. I have a nice life now a beautiful daughter and I still have those demons from my past but i just blast them away with a intense workout and im good. That's what saved me listening to heavy metal and lifting it. 😆 I love the channel and seen Metallica at least 15 times in 30 years which isn't that many times but they deliver every time. I did get to meet Jason Newsted back in 1997 and got to tell him you guys saved my life man. He said im glad your still with us brother and shook my hand. I almost broke down but he made me laugh by getting right in my face and screaming METAL FOR LIFE! Fuck ya metal for life.
Metallica didn't make videos during these days. They managed to achieve the early stages of their stardom without the typical marketing. All mixtapes and street-level.
I always took the lyrics, “no locked doors, no windows barred.” less literal, pointing to the mind as its own prison. But I didn’t realize the connection to the movie, so maybe they’re more literal. Especially, as you pointed out, considering the freedom to leave.
I always thought it referred to his asylum or mental institution environment and that no visual windows are barred nor visual doors are locked, except of course the literal locked door to the exit of the institution, which is never seen, thus creating a tranquil atmosphere that makes everything ostensibly "normal."

I always took it less literal some parts as well. By having social anxiety I always had a different connection to this song, although that's not exactly what the lyrics intend maybe.

Some great recommendations here already. Megadeth is directly related to Metallica, but has it's very own style. I would recommend the songs "Symphony of Destruction", "Peace Sells", "Tout le Monde" and "Holy Wars".
Pantera is another milestone of heavy music, for sure. "Cemetary Gates" is a must-hear. The official live video for "Domination", shot in Moscow, is a really impressive document of their unbelievable stage presence and musical abilities. "Walk" and "This Love" are some mighty headbangers. Their guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell was without any doubt one of the most influential artists on expressive modern guitar playing, technically and artistically unique at that time and unsurpassed in it's perfection (THAT tone was copied a lot).
Anthrax is a band that is very strong with a unique style, some extraordinarily well written lyrics and also a lot of self-ironic humor. A masterpiece is the whole "Persistence of Time" album from 1990, that is maybe as important when it comes to Anthrax as "Master of Puppets" is to Metallica. "Is still relevant today, actually the songs are - timeless/future proof. ""Time" is not only the first song of the album, but also a great song to start out on Anthrax. The according live video from Auburn, 1991, also shows their great stage qualities. "Keep it in the Family" is maybe my second favorite of this band ever. Anthrax are together with Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer the classical BIG FOUR of Thrash Metal (each with their own strong influences on any extreme metal genre thereafter).
Have fun exploring these great bands. All of them have something to offer in terms of lyrics and emotional impact, additionally to being musically and artistically excellent.

This is what I love about all these UA-camrs doing reactions to this awesome old metal. The range of people that always assumed metal was just loud guitars and screaming that get legitimate chills from this music is amazing.
I'm 36 and although this came out long before me I still grew up listing to it as well as other awesome metal like Pantera. I love seeing people open their minds and take this stuff in and realize how deep these songs really are and that there's actual meaning to them and the music really tells a story in itself.
Old Metallica is timeless. The lyrics, the melodies, everything.

My dad had a massive alcohol problem with gave him a brain aneurysm. He survived but became demented and we had to put him to a nursing home.Every time i hear this song it reminds me of my dad being locked away somewhere where he doesent want to be, and i cry. The only song that does that to me

Welcome to the band. I love how fast you process and find the meaning of the songs. I love when people listens heavy metal for the first time and enjoys it. Puré speed metal.
You got the chills excact same spot where we got them 30 years ago. I guess that´s why I kind watch these reaction vids. Music is a universal language and we can all learn how to appreciate certain details and nuances. We all have our favorite moments in many songs and when we see a young person like you picking up the vibe the same places, well that just put a big smile on my face. Love it.
When their older albums were made, none of the members went to any sort of music school. Aside for Cliff Burton. He was the only one who went to music school and introduced the rest to so many other things that spice music up. (I remember he specifically mentioned harmonies in a short interview) These people, these young adults, James, Cliff, Kirk and Lars made this out of pure, raw and explosive talent.
The band has had a beginning which is really inspiring and motivating to me. Getting to start something so big and so powerful, yet with so little experience and knowledge is crazy, and some might say a very very lucky shot in the dark.
Just so you know, Kirk Hammett was trained by Joe Satriani...

I used to listen to this every summer afternoon riding my bike to my first job. Metallica got me through several years of horrible abuse at home, bullies at school, and others who just wanted to make my life hell. It focused my anger. Now they're all dead. j/k
First off. You are absolutely adorable. Beyond that I just wanted to let you know...Master of puppets is a better song. My personal second favorite song on the album. The first favorite is Orion. Which as LOGAN SEYMOUR accurately described as Cliff Burtons masterpiece. I listened to Master of puppets cover to cover the first time back in 95. Cliff's bass solo on Orion still gives me chills to this day. And I've listened to that track literally thousands of times over the years.

@@robertcameron9567 Yeah really I love them all. Dime was, is, and will always be my favorite guitarist! No one will ever play like him. I've even been to his grave and his house. Poured a Black Tooth Grin for him and Vinnie too if you know what I mean. The Sleep is amazing and love the solo, but Floods solo and outro are by far my favorite of all time, but really are there any that aren't great? I mean, Dime put his heart into every song he wrote. If you haven't heard old Pantera check out, We'll Meet Again, the solo in that is crazy good! When I was in basic training and things got tough I would play Floods and We'll Meet Again in my head like if I had on headphones, just clear my mind and hear those tunes, I could keep going. So talking about sweet solos... It's Makes Them Disappear is a top one too! Getcha Pull, Buddy!

Recently found the "reaction to songs" videos and have watched a lot of them, I appreciate you not pausing the video over and over (I know you have read that a lot but it makes the videos so much more enjoyable). I like your breakdown's and reactions too because they are more than "wow, they are good" and you read the lyrics so you actually understand what they are singing so you get the full context. Great videos keep them up please.

It's such a beautiful thing to see a person that is inexperienced in Metal music discover it for the first time and embrace it. I've watched your Metallica videos in order and seen them capture your attention more and more. The emotion that I see in your movement and your eyes during the songs shows me that you are feeling their touch on your heart. I have loved Metallica for a long time (I didn't grow up with them. I was born in the late 80's and was introduced by my parents) and it is great to see someone discovering the emotion and the messages that they display in their music. A large portion of Metal music is the same. Tackling difficult issues and addressing deep levels of emotion. Many people are turned off by the aggressive sound, but you have given it a fair chance and embraced it. I respect you greatly for that and I am happy for you that you have discovered what this genre of music can really do for people.
Metallica's Outlaw Torn, Bleeding me or Fixxxer would be a great choice. These are their hidden gems!

It's always a blast watching people new to metal start slowly headbanging...almost everyone starts to eventually, but when you see them turning their head just a little bit while they do it, you know they're hooked and just lost in the melody. They're not paying attention to anything except the music.

I'd have to peg you as early 20's, yet you seem to gravitate to early-to-mid 80's metal, which is awesome. Old School Metallica is some of the best metal ever made (though they were considered sell-outs by their faithful listeners for their Black album, that might be my favorite album of theirs). Thank you for letting me live vicariously through you; experiencing one of my all-time favorite bands again through your ears. I think you would REALLY love to experience Tool. ;)

Next you should do something off their 1st album. Kill em All. I recommend the 4 Horsemen. It's awesome and I'm female too. Not that that should matter much but sometimes it does in little ways when it comes to music. I also recommend you listening to another band that was around a couple years after Metallica came out and that's Pantera. The song Cemetary Gates is an absolute must! Try Pantera I think you'll like them.

Love watching your reactions. After years of hearing these songs the lyrics become a bit assumptive, but watching someone else discover them anew evokes the feeling of excitement I felt when the song became more than music to me. I hear myself cheering internally "She gets it." There is a reason Metallica has been relevant for 40 years now.

I grew up OBSESSED with Metallica, and as I've aged the place they filled hasn't been replaced, but has gotten more company as my taste in music has changed and evolved over the years. @@captaindank9568 Yeah they have so much good stuff. And I love their sense of humor. Very different than the other three of the big four. I love that they wrote a tune about judge Dredd, or about the Stephen king novella Apt Pupil. Among the living is my fav album of theirs, with State of Euphoria being a close second. All of their stuff is great though.
And I'm glad that you suggested Angel of Death by Slayer. Most reaction videos dealing with them usually feature the song Raining Blood from the album Reign in Blood, but Angel of Death really tells you all that you need to know about the band. It's the best example of who they are, and the lyrics...jeepers. I don't know if Slanzzy would be ok after that. LOL
Anything off Among or Spreading for Anthrax would be a great start. Unless you want to early with Neil’s vocals instead of Joey, and check out Deathriders on Fistful of Metal.

If you want to hear a really great weeping guitar solo, listen to The Outlaw Torn... This is newer Metallica which some might shame me for, but it's a great song! It really pulls on your heart strings. Back to the older stuff, Four Horseman, Creeping Death, and Fight Fire with Fire. Best intro of any song they ever wrote! And then there are more instrumental songs, To Live is To Die, Orion and Call of Ktulu! Love your videos! And you have to hear Pantera, I'm telling you... Start with Cemetery Gates... You won't believe how beautiful and heavy this song is! Dime was the best!
New Metallica is just different to old Metallica. It's still very powerful, skilfully written music!
Outlaw Torn is an awesome song! I'm one of the few Metallica fans who actually likes both Load and Reload (I personally think it's when Metallica actually sounded at their best both musically AND vocally for James as his voice had developed much more range and imnpact)
The Outlaw Torn in my opinion is a masterpiece.

@@JasonSmith-hs5dj I prefer the studio version. These empty spaces with only drums, bass & vocals, it makes a special mood, and makes the chorus more percussive. On the S&M version, I find that the orchestration does not bring anything more, it doesn't transcend the original in my opinion.

first glad to see another hear and feel the music such as you do. i'm a 50ish old school rock and metal guy myself but listen to lots of genres as i never want to be one dimensional. its 4am here in Mich and i'm checking the latest music and such when i ran across your metallica reaction videos. i watched all and love(d) your raw connection to each and at which formed my own(non perverse)connection with you. not only do these songs put you in places to some that may feel relatable but on their own evoke emotions whether through the lyrics or by virtue of the music itself. in my time i think i've lived these feelings that they and others sing of. Some of my past depressions were helped through with this very music. i now look and love to listen to songs like " good man" by devour the day. if you get a chance give it a listen. keep up your good work and openness to explore as there are many lessons to be learned in life and you never know who might be a teacher
This is truly one of the most under-rated Metallica songs ever. The blending of storytelling and music is top notch. If you don't get chills a couple times listening to this, I don't know what to say. This whole album is stellar. It captures the pinnacle of this era of the band. Loved seeing your reactions to certain parts SLANZZY. I'd like to recommend you listen to a Canadian band named COLD DRIVEN. You might start with a song called "Steel Chambers" off their second album.
Not underrated at all. If anything, it’s overplayed.
My mom loves Metallica and she said this album in particular was overplayed basically from 1987 all the way to 1995 on radio stations and bars. But even though this album was overplayed and it’s basically very commercial it’s a masterpiece. Every song on this album is amazing, if you want to talk about an “underrated” song in this album it would be Damage Inc. This album is easily on the Top 10 Metal albums of all time.

This was the first song I listened by Metallica in the 80's, which turned me into a sucker for Metallica. I was just a teenager, and it mold my music taste since then. Def to live is to die . It’s a tribute to bass player Cliff Burton who died on tour with band in a bus accident, he was only 24. This instrumental is EPIC and gives me chills every time I listen to it.

Great reaction and review. One of the best from Metallica as a piece by itself, that part of the 2nd solo at 3:00 until you say you got chills always gives me chills too, that weeping bend into that fast downhill shredding melody before leveling out on the final note is crazy! The whole song is a masterpiece, beautifully eerie and aggressive at the same time I think lol
