  • Jim is one of my favorite characters from The Office. But when you really get into it, he changes the least as a character out of pretty much anyone. Let's take this opportunity to dive into Jim Halpert's character arc...or lack of character arc.

One of the most interesting things about Jim to me is one of character flaws - Jim cannot talk his way out of a situation. When confronted in an awkward situation, like seeing Karen in “Branch Wars” or the whole Charles Minor episodes, Jim shows he totally fails when trying to use his words in awkward situations. This is a really cool dynamic for the “straight man” character, especially for the office. It allows the normal person to still be able to join the cringe humor.

  • @musicianscrub458
    @musicianscrub458 4 роки тому +23

I mean he does have a lot of character growth it just isn't necessarily a change in persona. honestly at the age their characters were portrayed it's not that common for a person to change who they are fundamentally.
Dwights change from over the top wanna be badass nerd to actual badass is a good example of a bit of an unearned and left field character growth.
Pams decision to be more of a protagonist in her own life was much more organic.
but half of the characters on the show don't change either. Angela, Oscar, Kevin, Kelly. They don't really change except for when they decide to change what their character is supposed to be.
Jim, like most people in real life, isn't someone who changes and grows or matures but rather shifts slightly through experience. He was someone who didn't feel much like fighting for what he wanted because he thought it wouldn't change much. like his Job or getting pam. it's only after he tries pursuing to actually become more important in his line of work that he realizes if he pushed that energy into committing to Pam for one more shot does he get his moment.
The rest of the series is how he grows with her, how he decides that he finally wants something. How his inner goal is to be the best man that he thinks Pam deserves by being this charming guy..
Then how he wants something more than just a marriage with a boring small town sales job. How he has to decide if he wants to risk what he's built over the last 5 years is worth endangering.
Growth doesn't mean change it means getting wiser sometimes.
other people also pointed out how Jim has real character flaws that even resemble michael. He is sometimes put under pressure and doesn't want to be the bad guy when it comes to hard decisions. it's what keeps him from becoming manager or moving ahead. He sucks at making the hard calls because he can't handle people being mad at him all that well.

I’d say Jim’s character arc is work ethic and caring about his job. You can see this as in earlier seasons he repeatedly states he doesn’t care about his job then later you see this change first when he goes after the promotion at the end of season three and then when he pursues a promotion later on and the episode where he goes for the hard sell on the golf course and eventually when he leaves his old career behind to pursue something he’s passionate about at the end of the show.

I really liked the video and most of the points, but i feel like youre missing an important part about jim. Hes an introvert. One that has a comedic social shell. But also a dude who isnt comfortable confronting people. When jim makes a move hes thought about it for awhile and sures himself up, not really sharing much of the details with others. Just results. So i think you can find charactwr growth in his relationship with pam. Not only does he continue to make big life decisions without pam. But they literally have to go to counseling. So he learns how to be more assertive, then he learns how to be a little less assertive with his actions and actually learns to talk with pam. Imo jim has one of my favorite character arcs. The average joe that gets the girl and the great job. All because he did what he loved and learned how to love while he did. (Id love to debate this more in the comments with whoever!)

I’m a big office fan. To like an unhealthy amount. But Jim changes a lot. He is very shy about his relationship with Pam at the start, and also doesn’t see himself going anywhere besides The Paper Business, but by Season 3 and 4 he becomes much more outgoing and confronts Pam and then asks her out later, eventually he also developed a massive love for Sports and starts and starts his sports business, loving it, more than a Pam, but eventually chooses what is right and giving up everything for a Pam, which is a massive change. Then he becomes friends with Dwight which at the beginning he considered Dwight annoying. Of course he does continuously do something’s like pranks and loving Pam, that does not make him a static character as he has many development stages from Season 3-4 and from Season 6-9.

Jim doesn’t change because his goals & environment either don’t require it or don’t allow him to do so.
He has two goals throughout this series:
    1) date/marry Pam
    2) give his work life some meaning
He accomplishes both of these goals & eventually expands on them. He passes up on the job in NYC to attempt to date Pam & is constantly regarded as an exceptional employee at DM, even if the co-manager stint doesn’t really work; because it’s not who he is & the office really won’t let him because they are used to Michael. He & Pam eventually have a house & two kids, which is a natural by-product of a relationship.
It’s shortsighted to say that his character doesn’t “grow” or develop. Realizing who you are & realizing what isn’t working is growth as well. It doesn’t have to be someone pulling a complete 180 on who you are.
Pam changes because she has to. On her podcast, Jenna Fisher notes that Pam wants Jim to save her from Roy, but he can’t; she has to save herself, which she ultimately does.

I don't know if I'd say he doesn't change, he definitely grows, and jokes aside, the hair reflects that. At the start of the show, he is clearly a slacker who does not really care about his job and only does it because it's the gig he has and he's got nothing better (also Pam). He is unmotivated and dispassionate in his professional life. It is also shown in his costuming: he wears baggy loose fitting clothes. As the show goes on, he starts taking his job more seriously, and he starts succeeding, even becoming one of the top salesmen, being considered for a corporate promotion, and becoming the Co-Manager of the branch. The Jim we see in the beginning of the show would not fit that description. His physical appearance changes as well: he combs his hair, wears better fitted shirts, and wears a jacket or a full suit. Finally, the show ends with him leaving the company to become a successful entrepreneur and start a thriving new business. He's still the straight man, and he's always been a good guy with no major flaws to change, but he just simply grows up. He matures and transitions from an aimless young man to a father and successful businessman. To say "he's a prankster at the beginning and a prankster at the end, therefore he doesn't change" is kind of a surface-level assessment of his story through the show

Jim is like Captain America in the MCU... In that his character and values are established early on and he doesn't change but the people around him change and the reason he is a compelling character is how he reacts to this change with little compromise to his character. Just an all round dope person 👌🏽

I would argue that Jim becomes more respectful of Dwight (and their joint enemies to friends character arc is important)
He becomes more ambitious and self driven as he realizes he doesn’t want to be just some random guy at the office and goes out to pursue his dreams
And his whole arc with Pam must have had at least some effect on his character

I have to admit, Jim is my favorite character. I love his chaotic neutral personality, and his chemistry with Pam, and still hold a pretty strong crush on John Krasinski.
Edited to add: in watching this and contemplating why I love Jim so much, I think it's because he is so outgoing yet introverted, and unapologetically himself. And I wish I could be more unapologetically myself.

    • @snowpoler
      @snowpoler 2 роки тому

I think the word you're looking for is ambivert. :)
He shows some traits of an introverted as well as an extroverted person. He's more nuanced that some might think.
He isn't a fan of social interaction as he tends to avoid it unless it's with someone he actually sees as a close friend (or maybe Dwight lol), is mainly awkward and barely ever initiates a conversation himself, yet he's shown to have good social skills when he's sure of himself and when he wants to keep the others entertained. That's my take on him, at least.
People generally overlook his character when it comes to how his mind works mainly because we're supposed to see him as the normal, static character with no extreme ups or downs.
As a gal in her 20s who seems to have a grasp of things in her life, but not quite yet lmao, I like him too and find his character quite relatable throughout the whole show.
His goofiness and use of sarcasm also makes me think of Chandler Bing, how he also was stuck in a job he didn't really enjoy in which he also was kinda pranky (proof in a bunch of scenes in which we see him in the workplace) in order to distract himself and others from the boring routine of their work. :)

Well, you might have wanted to talk about their rough patch during season 9. The tension between them was displayed for several episodes, a tension that's enough to make Pam cry or make Jim yell over a recording of Cece (dunno if I wrote that correct).

Jim's work ethic did change in some weird ways due to the Sabre commission cap, Charles Miner, trying to buy a house, finding his passion at Athlead, and having kids with Pam. Toward the beginning of the series who made a joking comment that to impress your manager you do a mediocre job half-halfheartedly. Later on in the series, to afford his life with Pam, he literally blocks a potential clients car to close a sale. I don't think he would have done that without the monetary motivation from his new lifestyle with Pam. I think that his work ethic should be worth mentioning, because it was definitely his biggest change.

Always felt like the reason why Jim never really changes is because I always viewed Jim as the audiences character. He’s the most relatable and the least cartoonish. Though Dwights, and Michaels etc. are in the real world we don’t seem them at every turn in our local stores. Most are like Jim. Hence why he gives us his little look into the camera. We watch the show laughing and saying wtf to all the shenanigans and he looks at us to confirm we’re on the same page and that we see what he sees. That’s what I always thought.

The only issues I had with his character happened in the last seasons where Jim and Pam suddenly had stupid drama out of nowhere, even though we've been made to think that they're so honest and understand each other on a spiritual level, but suddenly they (the writers) tried to make it seem like they'd honestly divorce or something...

I originally thought Jim is a guy who can handle anything, but he stumbles as a manager (for a brief time when he was Scranton branch's regional manager), but thrives as a entrepreneur and a front-man for his own company... I think Ryan (when he was in his Sean Parker mode) says it best "take a day off from the whole "Jim shtick" and to try caring about something for once". We can see the same dynamic in Darryl, he has this one big idea and Jo promotes him, what does he do? he slacks off, Andy even calls him out for that, but once again, when he is in a job he loves (schmoozing with sport stars around the country), he comes alive and becomes successful

  • @abiwonkenabi7027

I think that a character trying to change and deciding he doesn't need to or its not for him IS a character arc. Also, I think Pam and Jim make a great couple: for many reasons, but one relevant to this video is how they improve each other as people. Pam grows more confident and assertive because of Jim, and Jim does things like save Dwight's job for example because of Pam. Even if its because of another character, it can still be considered growth.
I think it comes down to the Office having fairly realistic depictions of people in general (outlandish character traits and situations aside). Jim is one of the most "real" characters, and in real life people CAN improve, but usually don't change a great deal even when they do.

We do see a subtle change. And it's done well. Yes he pranks Dwight and hates his job for the most part, he respects Dwight by the end and actually likes him by the end. He cares about his job and works really hard and becomes one of the best by the end. It's subtle... But good. Plus he isn't perfect. When bad things happen to him they happen hard.
