The Office ran for years, but when was it at its best? In this video I go over my favorite seasons of NBC's hit sitcom (that most saw through Netflix) as well as the ones I don't think worked.

@@daredevil6145 I could not possibly agree with that comparison, seasons 5 and 6 of GoT were absolutely nothing compared to the first 4, the first 4 are peak Television due to GRRM's writing while they butchered books 4 and 5 with season 5 making that season a massive step down (because even though they still had book material they absolutely ruined it by squishing 2 books into 1 season and making beyond dumb changes) and season 6 only seems good because of all the payoffs but those don't work if the setup is downright mediocre with the neutering of characters like Euron and Tyrion. Whereas seasons 6 and 7 of the Office are while by no means 2 of the best still around the same quality as seasons 2-5 (I think they're better than 1 personally)

2, 3, and 4 were a joy to watch. By 5 it was getting a bit too exaggerated and over-the-top and had lost that special something of the earlier seasons, but was still enjoyable in its own right. After season 5 the show began a definite, steady, downward slump.

@@MinerFun I think season 5 had some of the greatest ideas within the show. Michael Scott Paper Company was gold, stress relief was amazing, I just wish they did more with Pam and art school and not just make her fail it and come back. I think they should’ve ended it after michael scott paper company gets sold because the other episodes are a bit filler and it would’ve made sense to start a new season with Michael as a boss again. Does all of it make it better than 4? No. it doesn’t have an episode as good as Dinner Party and 4 being so short actually made me love it the most. I love a short and sweet season and that did it for me. I would however say 5 is good whilst being a bit overstretched.

Andy is one of the weirdest characters in Tv, he starts off as a side-character in Jim's plotline of S3, then goes to Scranton to become a villain, returns as a minor-character, becomes a main-character, becomes the new Michael, and then fucks off on a boat for like a season then returns and shits on a car.

I find season 1 hard to compare to the other seasons because it feels more like a real office documentary, which is what the show was purported to be about. Season 2 on is more sitcom like and comfy, which is why the show gets re-watched so many times, but the cost of that is the increasing cartoonishness and loss of tension from feeling less and less like a real office. So I really like season 1 and the following season or so.

Fortunately, every single episode of S2 (the best one by far) is where the show really took off. I think I used to also be in the same boat as you.
I'd recommend the show to people and advise them to hold on through season 1 to get to the vastly superior seasons 2 and on...
But with hindsight, aside from the pilot episode, season 1 is very strong.
It feels a little older and a little different from season 2 and on (when they really hit on the heart of the show, balancing Michael's behaviour out a bit more evenly between douche boss and honestly loveable, trying guy).
But in terms of developing its identity as separate from the original series and laying the foundation of where the characters would go, season 1 is much better on a recent re-watch. All opinions, of course - if you've rewatched recently and still don't expect season 1 to be so high, power to you.

I like to look at the office’s quality like a plane journey. Season 1 is that awkward getting onto the plane with people in the aisles trying to put their luggage away, nothing going quite right but getting to know the environment you are about to spend however long inside. Seasons 2 & 3 are the taking off rising incredible high so quickly and having a lot of fun on the way. Then 4 - 6 are maintaining that high level as you relax into this world with a little turbulence along the way. Season 7 is the beginning of the slow decline. Season 8 is the final steeper decline in for landing, making you a little nauseous. Finishing off with Season 9 as the anxious landing, pulling off overall a good ending to an incredible journey that you would happily get on all over again with no regrets.

This has always been my opinion: if you view the show post-Michael Scott as its own series, it’s not all that bad. If you view them as the same, you can clearly see that they were running out of ideas and trying to do whatever they could to keep viewers entertained. The tone and content of the last two seasons would have worked better as a spin-off. They aren’t terrible and I’ll admit, a lot of episodes I still find thoroughly entertaining. But I think we can all agree they feel drastically different than the show when it still had Michael. And no one can deny: they took WAY too many swings and misses. Everything with Cathy, the love-hate relationship with Robert California as a character, Jim and Pam seeming like they’re gonna get a divorce, Andy referring back into a complete dick out of nowhere…I could name many more.

Ha! Chair Model was the very first episode I watched, and it's still about my favourite. In fact, season 4 overall might be my number 1 season.
One thing that the D'Angelo, and neighbouring storylines really capture is the feeling of what really happens when you lose a boss and have to go through a handful of weird ones until you get another.

My favourite part of the finale is the first song that Dwight and Angela dance because in the early parts of the show you can see multiple times that Dwight dances to Mötley Crüe songs and the first song that they dance is Angela by Mötley Crüe

I’ve seen a lot of people hate on season 1 but I actually like. It feels a lot more real, especially compared to how cartoonish the show got in later seasons, but it’s still funny and it has some really good episodes in my opinion like Diversity Day. It’s not my favourite season but it’s definitely up there.

I think I’d agree with almost everything you said in this video, although I’d probably have swapped 2 and 3.
Personally, 2, 3, and 4 are kind of the show for me now. I usually just rewatch it starting with season 2 and then stop watching after 4 ends.
Season 4 isn’t as good as the two that came directly before it, but it’s kinda nice to just enjoy Jim and Pam being together. I love the “will they? won’t they?” in 2 and 3 but it’s refreshing to just see them together in 4.

To me the ranking goes like this:
    S3
    S2
    S5
    S4
    S1
    S8
    S7
    S9
    S6
Seasons 2 and 3 are easily the best seasons. Storylines, arcs, characters… it all flows so well. Season 2 is like as if the show found its own identity, and season 3 cemented it. Season 4 was like watching a teenager graduating from highschool. It had confidence, it was propelling itself for the future. Season 5 is the office at its peak in terms of confidence, taking risks, creating arcs (the Michael Scott paper company being the best arc in the series). Season 1 is like going to grandmas house and finding old pictures of yourself doing weird stuff. It’s cringe, but it’s nostalgic. You remember where you came from. Season 8 IMO is a breath of fresh air because of Robert California. After Michael’s departure, I was curious to see how the show would handle the loss of a lead character, and although not perfect, season 8 brought one of the funniest characters of the show. Season 7 is a good season but only memorable because of Michaels departure, like a farewell season.
Season 9 feels like an experimental season after season 8, and season 6 is the start of the downfall of the show in terms of creativity for me. Pretty forgettable but with nice moments here and there. Felt like the show engaged autopilot and stuck its foot down the gas

Been a LONG time since I've watched the last seasons, but I remember it well enough. My favorite seasons are the first, say, four are my favorite, and I go back time and again to those episodes time after time. I also love some later episodes like "Scott's Tots", "Goodbye Michael", "Niagra", "Threat Level Midnight", and, yes, the finale isn't perfect but it's solid and even touching.
    9. Season 8
    8. Season 9
    7. (by a WIDE margin) Season 7
    6. Season 5

I enjoyed season 1. It had its growing pains especially with Michael Scott. But I still found the episodes very funny. Seasons 2 and 3 were the peak. Some of the funniest television I’ve ever seen.
Season 4 was good but there was definitely a decline. Seems like they struggled a bit now that the Jim, Pam, Karen, Roy arc was over. I also missed unhinged Andy although I understand why they changed his character. Season 5 was uneven although I really liked the Michael Scott Paper Company arc. Cafe Disco is one of my favorites.
Season 6 was a definite decline. I watched through the wedding episodes but started to lose interest after that. Pam changed quite drastically. Her assertiveness seemed to come out of nowhere. Season 7 was also not very good. They seemed to have run out out of ideas although i thought they handled Michael Scott’s exit pretty well.
I watched very little of seasons 8 and 9 and what I did see was pretty bad. It’s just not The Office without Steve.

As a whole those last few season are definitely less consistent but I still absolutely loved them. Some of my favorites times were towards the end. Michael Scott is one of the greatest fictional characters ever made but I also found myself getting tired of him at times in my first watch because it felt like stretches he was literally all I saw. So, I found it very refreshing to get some more screen time with a lot of the side characters in the later years

Just finished my first watch, bingwatching so I would have to watch it again, slower paced to fully appreciate some aspects.
I can't really say why, but for me season 4 didn't hit the right spot. I noticed it when watching season 5 and thinking it was a lot better than the 4th.
Season 8 was a bit weird and like you said searching for a new balance. What I really liked about the 2 last seasons though was that there was more room for the other characters to develop now that it wasn't the Michael Scott show anymore. (Micheal Scott is a brilliant chararcter and without him the show would never have been this popular). It felt a bit more grounded and knowing it was going to be the end soon, I felt it was the place where it needed to be.

I think season 1 is generally underrated because the first time you watch the show you don’t quite understand the characters, the dynamics and the humour of the series. After re-watching it, I could totally understand each line of dialogue and why it was there.
The humour is much more sarcastic and subtle than just punch lines or Michael being a clown. It makes fun of how dumb the corporate life is, and how we should be able to laugh at ourselves.

Mine are [worst to best] 8,9,7(hard to watch because I know Michael is leaving),6,5,1,3,2,4
4 was my favorite because the show felt like it really knew itself at that point. You even see Michael's maturity start when Holly Shows up and he willingly resists a "That's What She Said" opportunity. It feels like the season that takes us out of the office and into their lives. Especially with the Dwight / Angela arc.
