Creed being manager was the only thing that would saved the office . But thats the problem with having your actors as producers, they want more screen time and want to be the main character, and thats exactly what happened with their main producer being john Krasinski he wanted his character to be main even tho no one could take that spot from Steve carrel.

Jim and Pam weren’t awkward, they started having marital problems. That’s a very different thing, because while both can be uncomfortable to watch, you can get a lot of story out of marital problems. Which they did.
Michael was the glue that held everything together. Once he left, we all know what happened. What baffles me is the fact that they hardly mentioned him in last two seasons as if he wasn't an integral part of the show.

Even when he came back on Dwight's wedding day, I didn't think they put enough spotlight on him. It was a very subtle appearance. I hated that, I wanted more.
My favorite thing about the show was Jim and Dwight. They had a such a good dynamic that lasted until the last episode. I never got tired of them going back and forth and Jim pranking Dwight.

Ever since I saw Will attending that weird art, cake eating thing, hosted by that satanist lady, I see him in a weird light. If you don't know what i'm talking about...there's this weird older lady, who's a performance artist and self proclaimed satan worshipper who throws these weird parties. There was one that had a cake in the shape of a naked woman and all these celebs were there,dressed in lab coats slicing up this cake with other actors under the tables with their heads sticking out, like a weird horror movie. It was creepy as hell and Will was there acting all weird. It was something like..spirit cake or spirit cooking, I saw it on here. But anyway..after that, Will just seems a weird dude who attends some really weird parties lol
I liked his character development and becoming more of a leader, but when he got back from the boat, he became really really dislikable. I did like Robert California tho.
i’m in season 8 and this sabre doesn’t make sense. They said when Dunder Mifflin Scranton was the only one that was bought but then out of nowhere exists some others Dunder Mifflin (the last 2 episodes from s8 show us that)
I'd rather enjoying Ryan's character roller coaster development all over again than watching the last 2 seasons. Watching him from a temp to be the manager of the company and then become a bowling alley's employee only to be a temp again is hillarious.
I really started to dislike the Office after the return of Andy to his job after losing it to Nellie. His refusal to play along with Robert's game (him saying no) is a great moment for his character because he finally learns to assert himself and no longer work to please others. All of a sudden when Wallace reinstates him he becomes a huge dick, completely horrible and disrespectful to everyone around him. It's one of the worst turns I've ever seen in a comedy show. Nellie, the most unlikable character in the show, suddenly becomes someone we're supposed to root for against Andy, and the introduction of Pete and Clark is uncomfortable and awkward as well. That being said, I did enjoy the tension between Pam and Jim in the ninth season because it shows that their marriage isn't a fairy tale and it tries to be realistic and they pulled off the finale quite well in my opinion.
Yes, exactly! I'm glad someone brought up Pete and Clark-possibly two of the most unnecessary characters added to a show in the history of sitcoms. They were really trying to push a Pam/Jim arch onto Erin and Pete and it didn't have the same energy. Smh... And I also enjoyed watching Pam and Jim work through their issues.
I agree with every word you said. I think the writers were totally disrespectful to the audience when they destroyed andy in just one episode. And the way they forced erin and pete to be pam and jim in such a short period of time just made me cringe.

I think the show died when Andy went on his 3 mouth break. He just quickly went from a dollar store Michael to an insensitive asshole. He basically forgot about Erin, took credit for the branch success in his absence, and gave up on his job. Im just real glad they were able to fix his character in the last few episodes and make him likable again Who agrees with me
i agree 100%. even though he was a funny character, hes not remotely close to michael. the fact that the writers made him more despicable in season 9 doesn't make any sense at all and ruins his character.
i don't agree. the main focus of the show is the romance between Jim and Pam. Andy and Erin are just side characters, and Erin is an especially bad character. Their story is at worst a rip off of Jim and Pam and at best, it's filler. It's just incredibly boring to watch and didn't make me feel emotional at all, like Jim and Pam's story. The Office indeed died on Niagara, like he said in the video. With Jim and Pam now married, the purpose of the show has been fulfilled and the writers struggled to keep the show going.
To me, the show just declined when they just decided to start throwing in random characters all the time. No, I'm not talking about Erin (if anything she was a highlight of the last few seasons). I'm talking about Gabe, Pete, Clark, Nellie, all these Sabre throw-ins that just made it feel like... not the Office? However, the show was amazing throughout the entire thing honestly and while I hated these characters, I still think the show managed to be full of humor and heart in Seasons Eight and Nine.
Should have gotten a Michael Scott wedding as the finale instead. Or at least let us see his children in the finale that we got. Would have been satisfied seeing his dream come true that we heard about in season 2. I never rooted for Angela and the only payoff was the grave wedding that was mentioned in season 3. Michael’s role was too small. I know why they didn’t have him be a big presence, but it still would have been nice to see a tiny bit more of him. Maybe a bit of him and Ryan, or him throwing a piece of cake at Toby, or something.
I agree, in the finale, I was unsatisfied because I felt we didn’t really get to catch up on Michael too much. And I really wanted to see him inside of the office one last time and see him with his children too maybe.

i find it funny how just before michael left, he walked up to each employee and said "dont become a caricature" and by the time the 8th season wrapped up, every. single. person. was a caricature of their former selves, like steve knew the writers would eventually give up and just make the characters do zaney things trying to keep the show alive (kevin went from mildly unintelligent and childlike to an outright buffoon)
Lindsey Shrodek pretty much his only two character traits were that he was fat/liked food and that he was stupid. It wasn't layered, they just combined the two things.
YGuy1 I’ve watched the office 6 times through (because I have no life) and idk I just love Kevin’s character because he’s a sub character but tiny details are revealed about him slowly. Like the fact that he likes to cook, his various girlfriends, and his awkwardness. Yeah he’s really stupid and likes food but he’s also sensitive and clumsy and sometimes a genius. It’s okay if you don’t think that, but I thoroughly enjoyed Kevin’s character.
I agree, 8 and the first 2/3 of 9 sucked, but they had a lot of crowning achievements in giving some spotlight to the more hidden away characters. Kevin for example, I found extremely funny in the later seasons. Darryl gets to debut his hilarity upon joining the upstairs staff. Nelly, while unfavorable at first, really grew on me in S9. Like my favorite scene from those is Kevin trying to save time by speaking like a caveman. These are just my views of course, but I don’t see S8 and S9 as complete busts. They’re dropoffs from what the show was for sure but they do have their merits.
No this guy is right. When Jim and Pam married it lost a huge plot point which was their tension. It’s why Will They Won’t They is always an ongoing thing in so many shows... the show scrambled after that to fill that void

Holly's arc in season 5 was WAAAAAYYY too short. She should have been on the show the whole season so we could really get invested in their relationship. Micheal had struck out with so many bad relationships leading up to Holly, it was awesome to see him finally click with someone who was "a big dork" like him. And the few episodes they were together were sooo sweet. She should have been there the whole season and like Elk said, if the show should have ended with Niagra, then Micheal and Holly would be together as well and we would really, really care about them and we would do backflips. Just a thought tho :/

I actually really enjoyed the arc involving James Spader. It was strange, but it felt like an interesting direction, like they weren't just trying to create Michael 2.0 or something. To me, the show fell apart as soon as they had to work towards writing Andy out of the show, his character had a great trajectory up until the last season, and it was just a mess. They turned him into a completely insufferable asshole, and the show was just a crash and burn after that for me.
Yeah, I think Robert California could've been interesting, but the creators clearly didn't know how to utilize him. He just didn't fit the tone of that world. Spader's talents were definitely wasted. But I agree, it was better than just doing Michael Scott 2.0 like they basically did with Andy. Bleh.
Yeah it completely fell apart in the last season for me where there destroyed all of Andy’s character development to turn him back into the one-note “incredibly annoying co-worker” joke character that he started as.
When California did his interview, it was perfect... I feel like it would have been much better to leave him that way... You could have had him a little more engaged than he was and still done something good with it... I think it would have worked well the way Idris Elba played his role on the show..

I don't think it ever died, it had it low points but the show continued to deliver till the end, even if some episode aren´t great. Till season 7 its fantastic, after that a little wonky.
Season 8 was pretty bad. I struggled for almost 2 months trying to just grit my teeth and make it through those episodes. I’m glad they kind of revived themselves a bit for the second half of season 9
Diego Oliveira not saying show lost relevancy, saying when it got shitty which (in my opinion) was when michael left. And its my favorite comedy show and even those seasons were better than a lot of current shows, but severely took a hit.
Top 3 mistakes The Office made: 1. Dunder Mifflin bought out by Sabre 2. Pam moving to sales 3. Not giving Michael more screen time in the finale. Yes, Steve Carrell leaving was the worst, but that was Carrell’s choice, I doubt the show itself wanted the character of Michael Scott to leave. Another thing, we all know Jim and Pam were made for eachother, but as was touched on in this episode, they got pretty boring after their wedding, and in my opinion, the romance lost some magic when Pam moved next to Jim and joined the sales team. Although I believe that The Office finale is one of the most satisfying and best finales I have seen, a Jim and Pam wedding as a finale might’ve been overall better for the show. They could wait until Jim and Pam got together, maybe they could start dating around the final seasons.
Steve did not leave because he wanted to, he left because he was initially his contract was for 6 seasons. I am pretty sure everyone cried when he had to leave as there are videos about it
True, because what was interesting about Jim and Pam was that their chemistry was like a “will they won’t they” type relationship that had its ups and downs with Roy and Karen, and after the wedding I had nothing to worry about. They later tried to supplement it with Erin and Andy, but Andy was just an annoying and just lame character to watch on screen. The show has gotten worse when Michael was replaced by Andy in my opinion. If I were one of the writers I would’ve had David Wallace become the manager or create a new character that is as lovable as Michael Scott, but don’t have him be a rip-off Michael.
There were a lot of disgruntled Office fans after Michael left. Before that we were all very gruntled. TBH I agree that the show started to decline once Jim and Pam got married.
Late to the party but I agree...for me the downward spiral began with the wedding. The early seasons with the Jim/Pam/Roy love triangle were amazing....by the time R.California arrived I had already given up on the show.

I've seen some people saying they've just watched entire Office for the first time and don't see the big deal with the last seasons. I'll just say that binging a show is not the same as watching it week to week, year to year. One can zoom through those last few seasons in a couple weeks. maybe less if you're really into it. but watching a show you invested several years on slowly wither and die is a much harder task. Its like people who have recently binged The Walking Dead on Netflix and say "I don't see the big deal with season 2". Its cause it took them days, not months to get through it. same principle.

Umm I disagree. Pam and Jim weren’t the only good things about The Office; maybe they were to you, but not to most other fans. The Office faltered when Micheal left, but even after that most fans still stuck around and ended up enjoying it. The Office was overall a great show to the very end (even AFTER Pam and Jim got married) due to the comedy and the interesting, lovable characters. And The Office is still very alive today, even after years of its completion.
I disagree. The show lost a lot of momentum and spirit after Michael left. Most things after that feels clumsy and soulless; primarily existing to keep the show going. Now, there are still some fun things, interesting additions, and Jim and Dwight (at the very least) still make the show a bit entertaining. At least, *that's how it felt to me. Sydney Petersen honestly for a long time Pam and Jim were my least favorite part of the show. Mostly because of Pam, she was so unlikeable. Until she started to grow a bit as a character I liked her more. They were cute but never my favorite part.
I think we were spoiled. The office without Michael was still great but it was a fall from legendary. When I rewatch it I still go from start to finish. No skipping. That's right, I even watch Scott's tots and love every single cringe moment of it.
P.s. I feel the first 3 episodes had some of the most cringe, even more than Scott's tots. Scott's tots graduation rate was far higher than the rest of the school so I don't think it was completely bad

My favorite show, and while some parts might have been mediocre, overall it was incredible to me. BUT there were 3 things I hated in the show and will always bother me a lot only because they were a part of my all time favorite show... 1. Robert California 2. Nellie 3. I didn't like season 8, barely even watched season 9, but the actual last two episodes of The Office were fantastic and made it worth it. The development of Dwight and Jim, as well as Dwight and Pam's friendships were the highlights of the last two seasons. Robert California was one of the worst characters I'd ever seen, and by season 9 so was Andy unfortunately. I wish the series finale had happened at the end of season 7 though - pretty much the same episode with the one year jump, the wedding, Dwight as manger, etc. just without having to sit through season 8 and 9 haha
I agree, it goes back to what Elk was talking about. More characters who were originally one note started getting more screen time, and that's just not how their were written. Andy was written as a sycophant and we watched his arc get completed by failing to win over Michael. Then he just turned into a goofy guy who sings all the time and is bad at his job. There's no real arc there, there's nothing really keeping us interested.
One thing nobody talks about is that the Office ditched all of its straight men. Toby, Oscar, David, Darryl, Ryan and at times Jan were terrific straight men. Then the writers saw it necessary to make them as goofy as everybody else. That made the show lose its toehold in reality. Another thing is that they thought every character needed an "arc". Such as - thinking that Angela needed "softening". In doing so, she became no longer funny. In life, you meet people who just never change. To give Angela such an about-face just didn't work.
Peter Collin that's so true! That reminds me of when Pam and Jim went on their honeymoon and Oscar called them because the ratio of crazies to normals was thrown off balance. That's essentially what happened to the show
Agreed, after Ryan became Superintendent, it ruined his character for me for the rest of the show. At first, he was the only one in the office who hadn't been completely absorbed by the madness, and he reflected how a typical person would react to most of the thing that happened on the show. Eventually though, he stopped being that character completely, and the writers couldn't figure out what to do with him. It was especially confusing to me how bad he always wanted to get back with Kelly, despite how much he originally hated it.
@@alexplainlater9770 In comedy a "straight man" is someone who keeps their composure in front of an eccentric character. It's something you find in duos/partners. For a time Oscar was the stiff in The Office who didn't bother to get involved in crazy antics. Once Michael left, characters started to fill the vacuum by occasionally being the comedic center of an episode.
I respect your opinion, but I still think "Goodbye Micheal" is the day the show died. While Jim and Pam got a tad boring to me after the wedding, I still felt like there was plenty of interesting stories and jokes. When Carrel left, I stopped laughing. That's what happens when a show dies for me. Still, a fantastic video essay and I look forward to seeing more!
Totally agree! They lost something when Jim and Pam married but there was still something carrying the show, and I for one only realized that something was Michael when he left. It's kind of like they lost a lung in Niagara, but you know, you can still live with one, but then your second one gets punctured and there's no salvaging it after that - it's a steep decline until the sweet, sweet release of death
For me Robert California was such a bad fit that it worked. You had no clue what he was going to do next and that led to some funny storylines. He was never supposed to replace Micheal Scott but created some interesting dynamics in the show. Season 9 is where the show died, I just skip most of it to get to the finale. 8 is at least watchable.
Alex absolutely. Robert California was the anti Michael. Will Ferrell was brought in to the show to prove why having another Michael like character would have been terrible. The only way was to replace him with someone the complete opposite. Robert California. A similar Michael would leave us missing Michael and thinking “Michael would have done that better”. Instead we got a new fresh take from California.
Season 8 gets panned because people were throwing their toys out of the pram as Micheal had left. Of course the show wouldn't be as good but it was still funny and managed to keep my attention. I also enjoyed the Florida arc.
I like your point of view of when the Office Died. And yes I can see how Niagra could be marked as the end. A lot of things changed after that, But here's how I break down the show. IT really has three parts to it. The first Starts at the pilot and ends with Broke. The second part Starts at Casual Day and end with Goodbye Michael. And the third part starts at The Inner circle to the End. I view the third part as just extra episodes or just bonus content.
I agree, but the biggest mistake was not making Dwight the manager immediately(there was so much to work with), Robert California, Gabe and Nelly were terrible fits and weren't needed. Also I think Andy's character changed for the worse in the last 2 seasons. While I think season 9 was pretty good, season 8 was terrible with only a few decent episodes. I too watch it everyday before bed.
I wish we could have seen Michaels wedding, and I know that Steve left the show to be in movies and no longer shows, I think that it would have been good. I think that the seasons without Michael we’re okay but some episodes were terrible. Dwight really kept my interest in the show after Michael left and I actually started liking nelly after a while and the relationship between Erin and Pete was okay, but think that show tried making another Pam and Jim with Erin and Pete, a secretary already dating someone is liked by a co worker and then end up together
The ending should have been Holly and Michael’s wedding instead of Angela and Dwights. They could have made it where Dwight and Angela where just happily dating. Personally, Michael was the best character and would do anything to see more of his life with his family.
This thank you! Nobody has written do far how much of a failed move was the fact that they didn't show the wedding of Holly and Micheal. They didn't even mention it whatsoever. It is impossible that he didn't invite all his subordinates at his wedding.
i think they wanted to have more pressing conflict to their relationship besides the whole "waiting for pam" thing. or to make their relationship more "relatable", because most marriages go through a rough patch, or to try and make their relationship more meaningful because "love is tested by suffering".
I feel like I'm in the minority of people who actually really liked Robert California and season 8 but I didn't like season 9. I do agree though that ending on Jim and Pam's wedding would have been the best way for The Office to end.

Season 6, episode 14 "The Banker" is a good spot to end the series. That was a clip show episode. After that, the next episode was "Sabre" were we got new characters Jo Bennett and Gabe, that's when the show started to go down. They would add more characters later like Nellie and Robert California, and none of them were enjoyable to watch. When I re-watch the series, I watch up through "The Banker" and then stop.
most underrated comment on this whole thread. I agree with you on that another thing I would have liked is that Jim and Pam don't start dating until season 5 and marry near the end of season 6 and having that end the show. I really did not enjoy watching the sabre arc and how outside characters became the bosses in the Office

IMO, what made the Office great was three main things - Michael Scott - Jim & Pam romance - Jim v Dwight prank wars Jim & Pam romance grew very stale after their wedding and the show did terrible job trying to replace the romance onto other characters. Then, Michael Scott left which left HUGE hole which none of the other characters could even hope to replace. No one could come close to the talent and humor of Steve Carrel. Which left the prank wars as the only pillar the show had left standing on; even that grew somewhat stale. The show tried very relentlessly to replace the pillars but failed to do so over and over, resulting in the slow death of the show after season 7.
I agree. Even at it's lowest, it had more heart and better characters than the vast majority of programs out there. I also think it redeemed itself with an excellent finale, tying things up in a satisfying and heartwarming way.
Rewatched it 3 times, stoped at "goodbye Michael" every time. From the first time i witnessed Michael giving a bag of candy to some kids during halloween, that scene melted my heart and he became my sole reason to support the show (Jim and Pam are not bad too). p.s. I did check out the last episode, for Michael's part obviously lol

I watched The Office for the first time all the way through this year (I'm a changed man) and I can honestly say people overdramatize the post Michael departure. I think it's a great show all the way through.
Robert was minimally amusing; nellie was the worst character, her voice being downrigh annoying. Andy went from a funny character (before the career shift), to a cringey character til the last few episodes.
The show died when Andy became Michael, Robert California was great if they would have left him domineering.. Ed Helms was so unlikable it hurt, he was much better as a side kick
Honestly, a ton of these characters would have been fine if they would have just let them be the characters they were when they started the show. I get that people evolve, but they evolve very slowly. Andy, for instance, was much much darker when they first started. I liked him when he was trying to curry favor with Dwight etc.. But then all of a sudden he's a super competent Michael replacement... Characters are allowed to change and should, but not 180 degrees in two episodes...
Andy has always been the worst character on the show, edd helms is an amazing actor but on the office he seemed like an useless character and the only thing he did antagonize and anger the other character
I didn't care for Andy in the final two seasons. So, it's crazy that he also has three of my favorite moments from those seasons: 3) Erin confronting Andy, not realizing he's on speaker phone with David Wallace. 2) Andy singing "Time of Your Life." 1) Andy's "good old days" quote.
Creed is definitely one of my favorites. It sucks he was such a minor character, but tbh that's kind of what made him great, because he would just have like 1 line every once in a while, and they were so weird and awesome.
I want to say I like Robert California...but, honestly I think it's just that I love James Spader and would enjoy listening to him speak in literally anything...
One of the things I realize that puts me off in later seasons of the office is how cartoonish a lot of characters' behavious become. Characters like Creed and Kevin are a lot more balanced in early seasons, which makes their actions a lot more believable. I cringe everytime I see that Creed would just show up at work with a shirt full of blood. It's a joke at the expense of the character's credibility.
yes, exactly!! all the realism in the show died, it was no longer true to itself. The "mockumentary" theme they established so well in the earlier seasons was lost.

The fact that Robert didn’t fit was the exact reason why he was hilarious. People were too used to Michael and obviously expected Robert to be the same. However the final season *ruined* Andy and added two new characters that did nothing to push the story forward.
I think it died at the episode "get the girl" you know the one where nelly is introduced as a major character and steals Andy’s job and the one where the warehouse baloon falls and Pam says "an end of an era " as season 8 was quite funny but nelly just annoys me so much! Also Andy gets Erin and it’s just kinda cringe.
It's true! This was a weird direction and it lead to a repeated arc where Andy loses his job as regional manager and creates a new company and eventually remains it, much the same way Michael Scott did in an earlier season. It was a dumb way to start a repeated arc that we didn't need to see again. And yeah after so much time setting up Andy and Erin as a good couple they eventually ditched it and gave her a new love interest within the space of one season...
I'm glad that someone agrees with my opinion of Season 8. I remember hearing that Season 8 was the best season of the Office when I started watching the series and now having watched the Office, I strongly disagree. I heavily disliked Robert California and felt that he and Andy did not satisfy the absence of Michael Scott. Robert California was many things, like self absorbed and disgusting, but he was not funny imo. And Andy only became the boss because he was the character with the personality closest to Michael's, but his character was unable to provide what Michael was able to. I did not find Season 8 to be that funny and, while it's nice that there are two extra seasons of The Office to watch, the show definitely lost what made it mind blowing and a gem in television history.

Even when he came back on Dwight's wedding day, I didn't think they put enough spotlight on him. It was a very subtle appearance. I hated that, I wanted more.
My favorite thing about the show was Jim and Dwight. They had a such a good dynamic that lasted until the last episode. I never got tired of them going back and forth and Jim pranking Dwight.

Ever since I saw Will attending that weird art, cake eating thing, hosted by that satanist lady, I see him in a weird light. If you don't know what i'm talking about...there's this weird older lady, who's a performance artist and self proclaimed satan worshipper who throws these weird parties. There was one that had a cake in the shape of a naked woman and all these celebs were there,dressed in lab coats slicing up this cake with other actors under the tables with their heads sticking out, like a weird horror movie. It was creepy as hell and Will was there acting all weird. It was something like..spirit cake or spirit cooking, I saw it on here. But anyway..after that, Will just seems a weird dude who attends some really weird parties lol

I'd rather enjoying Ryan's character roller coaster development all over again than watching the last 2 seasons. Watching him from a temp to be the manager of the company and then become a bowling alley's employee only to be a temp again is hillarious.
I really started to dislike the Office after the return of Andy to his job after losing it to Nellie. His refusal to play along with Robert's game (him saying no) is a great moment for his character because he finally learns to assert himself and no longer work to please others. All of a sudden when Wallace reinstates him he becomes a huge dick, completely horrible and disrespectful to everyone around him. It's one of the worst turns I've ever seen in a comedy show. Nellie, the most unlikable character in the show, suddenly becomes someone we're supposed to root for against Andy, and the introduction of Pete and Clark is uncomfortable and awkward as well.
That being said, I did enjoy the tension between Pam and Jim in the ninth season because it shows that their marriage isn't a fairy tale and it tries to be realistic and they pulled off the finale quite well in my opinion.

They were really trying to push a Pam/Jim arch onto Erin and Pete and it didn't have the same energy. Smh... And I also enjoyed watching Pam and Jim work through their issues.

I think the show died when Andy went on his 3 mouth break. He just quickly went from a dollar store Michael to an insensitive asshole. He basically forgot about Erin, took credit for the branch success in his absence, and gave up on his job.
Im just real glad they were able to fix his character in the last few episodes and make him likable again

i don't agree. the main focus of the show is the romance between Jim and Pam. Andy and Erin are just side characters, and Erin is an especially bad character. Their story is at worst a rip off of Jim and Pam and at best, it's filler. It's just incredibly boring to watch and didn't make me feel emotional at all, like Jim and Pam's story.
The Office indeed died on Niagara, like he said in the video. With Jim and Pam now married, the purpose of the show has been fulfilled and the writers struggled to keep the show going.

To me, the show just declined when they just decided to start throwing in random characters all the time. No, I'm not talking about Erin (if anything she was a highlight of the last few seasons). I'm talking about Gabe, Pete, Clark, Nellie, all these Sabre throw-ins that just made it feel like... not the Office? However, the show was amazing throughout the entire thing honestly and while I hated these characters, I still think the show managed to be full of humor and heart in Seasons Eight and Nine.

Should have gotten a Michael Scott wedding as the finale instead. Or at least let us see his children in the finale that we got. Would have been satisfied seeing his dream come true that we heard about in season 2. I never rooted for Angela and the only payoff was the grave wedding that was mentioned in season 3. Michael’s role was too small. I know why they didn’t have him be a big presence, but it still would have been nice to see a tiny bit more of him. Maybe a bit of him and Ryan, or him throwing a piece of cake at Toby, or something.

i find it funny how just before michael left, he walked up to each employee and said "dont become a caricature" and by the time the 8th season wrapped up, every. single. person. was a caricature of their former selves, like steve knew the writers would eventually give up and just make the characters do zaney things trying to keep the show alive (kevin went from mildly unintelligent and childlike to an outright buffoon)

Lindsey Shrodek pretty much his only two character traits were that he was fat/liked food and that he was stupid. It wasn't layered, they just combined the two things.
YGuy1 I’ve watched the office 6 times through (because I have no life) and idk I just love Kevin’s character because he’s a sub character but tiny details are revealed about him slowly. Like the fact that he likes to cook, his various girlfriends, and his awkwardness. Yeah he’s really stupid and likes food but he’s also sensitive and clumsy and sometimes a genius. It’s okay if you don’t think that, but I thoroughly enjoyed Kevin’s character.
I agree, 8 and the first 2/3 of 9 sucked, but they had a lot of crowning achievements in giving some spotlight to the more hidden away characters. Kevin for example, I found extremely funny in the later seasons. Darryl gets to debut his hilarity upon joining the upstairs staff. Nelly, while unfavorable at first, really grew on me in S9. Like my favorite scene from those is Kevin trying to save time by speaking like a caveman. These are just my views of course, but I don’t see S8 and S9 as complete busts. They’re dropoffs from what the show was for sure but they do have their merits.

Holly's arc in season 5 was WAAAAAYYY too short. She should have been on the show the whole season so we could really get invested in their relationship. Micheal had struck out with so many bad relationships leading up to Holly, it was awesome to see him finally click with someone who was "a big dork" like him. And the few episodes they were together were sooo sweet. She should have been there the whole season and like Elk said, if the show should have ended with Niagra, then Micheal and Holly would be together as well and we would really, really care about them and we would do backflips. Just a thought tho :/

I actually really enjoyed the arc involving James Spader. It was strange, but it felt like an interesting direction, like they weren't just trying to create Michael 2.0 or something. To me, the show fell apart as soon as they had to work towards writing Andy out of the show, his character had a great trajectory up until the last season, and it was just a mess. Yeah, I think Robert California could've been interesting, but the creators clearly didn't know how to utilize him. He just didn't fit the tone of that world. Spader's talents were definitely wasted. But I agree, it was better than just doing Michael Scott 2.0 like they basically did with Andy. Bleh.
Yeah it completely fell apart in the last season for me where there destroyed all of Andy’s character development to turn him back into the one-note “incredibly annoying co-worker” joke character that he started as.
When California did his interview, it was perfect... I feel like it would have been much better to leave him that way... You could have had him a little more engaged than he was and still done something good with it... I think it would have worked well the way Idris Elba played his role on the show..

I don't think it ever died, it had it low points but the show continued to deliver till the end, even if some episode aren´t great. Till season 7 its fantastic, after that a little wonky.
Yeah I would agree with that for the most part. It had some redeeming episodes through the end, but it just wasn't the same as the classic seasons.
Season 8 was pretty bad. I struggled for almost 2 months trying to just grit my teeth and make it through those episodes. I’m glad they kind of revived themselves a bit for the second half of season 9

Yes, Steve Carrell leaving was the worst, but that was Carrell’s choice, I doubt the show itself wanted the character of Michael Scott to leave.
Another thing, we all know Jim and Pam were made for eachother, but as was touched on in this episode, they got pretty boring after their wedding, and in my opinion, the romance lost some magic when Pam moved next to Jim and joined the sales team. Although I believe that The Office finale is one of the most satisfying and best finales I have seen, a Jim and Pam wedding as a finale might’ve been overall better for the show. They could wait until Jim and Pam got together, maybe they could start dating around the final seasons.

True, because what was interesting about Jim and Pam was that their chemistry was like a “will they won’t they” type relationship that had its ups and downs with Roy and Karen, and after the wedding I had nothing to worry about. They later tried to supplement it with Erin and Andy, but Andy was just an annoying and just lame character to watch on screen.
The show has gotten worse when Michael was replaced by Andy in my opinion. If I were one of the writers I would’ve had David Wallace become the manager or create a new character that is as lovable as Michael Scott, but don’t have him be a rip-off Michael.

I've seen some people saying they've just watched entire Office for the first time and don't see the big deal with the last seasons. I'll just say that binging a show is not the same as watching it week to week, year to year. One can zoom through those last few seasons in a couple weeks. maybe less if you're really into it. but watching a show you invested several years on slowly wither and die is a much harder task. Its like people who have recently binged The Walking Dead on Netflix and say "I don't see the big deal with season 2". Its cause it took them days, not months to get through it. same principle.

Umm I disagree. Pam and Jim weren’t the only good things about The Office; maybe they were to you, but not to most other fans. The Office faltered when Micheal left, but even after that most fans still stuck around and ended up enjoying it. The Office was overall a great show to the very end (even AFTER Pam and Jim got married) due to the comedy and the interesting, lovable characters. And The Office is still very alive today, even after years of its completion.

Sydney Petersen honestly for a long time Pam and Jim were my least favorite part of the show. Mostly because of Pam, she was so unlikeable. Until she started to grow a bit as a character I liked her more. They were cute but never my favorite part.
I think we were spoiled. The office without Michael was still great but it was a fall from legendary. When I rewatch it I still go from start to finish. No skipping. That's right, I even watch Scott's tots and love every single cringe moment of it.
I can't believe some people skip episodes honestly, both the office and parks and rec I have seen every episode far far too many times.
P.s. I feel the first 3 episodes had some of the most cringe, even more than Scott's tots.

I didn't like season 8, barely even watched season 9, but the actual last two episodes of The Office were fantastic and made it worth it. The development of Dwight and Jim, as well as Dwight and Pam's friendships were the highlights of the last two seasons. Robert California was one of the worst characters I'd ever seen, and by season 9 so was Andy unfortunately. I wish the series finale had happened at the end of season 7 though - pretty much the same episode with the one year jump, the wedding, Dwight as manger, etc. just without having to sit through season 8 and 9 haha

I agree, it goes back to what Elk was talking about. More characters who were originally one note started getting more screen time, and that's just not how their were written. Andy was written as a sycophant and we watched his arc get completed by failing to win over Michael. Then he just turned into a goofy guy who sings all the time and is bad at his job. There's no real arc there, there's nothing really keeping us interested.

One thing nobody talks about is that the Office ditched all of its straight men. Toby, Oscar, David, Darryl, Ryan and at times Jan were terrific straight men. Then the writers saw it necessary to make them as goofy as everybody else. That made the show lose its toehold in reality. Another thing is that they thought every character needed an "arc". Such as - thinking that Angela needed "softening". In doing so, she became no longer funny. In life, you meet people who just never change. To give Angela such an about-face just didn't work.

Agreed, after Ryan became Superintendent, it ruined his character for me for the rest of the show. At first, he was the only one in the office who hadn't been completely absorbed by the madness, and he reflected how a typical person would react to most of the thing that happened on the show. Eventually though, he stopped being that character completely, and the writers couldn't figure out what to do with him. It was especially confusing to me how bad he always wanted to get back with Kelly, despite how much he originally hated it.

For a time Oscar was the stiff in The Office who didn't bother to get involved in crazy antics. It's kind of like they lost a lung in Niagara, but you know, you can still live with one, but then your second one gets punctured and there's no salvaging it after that - it's a steep decline until the sweet, sweet release of death
For me Robert California was such a bad fit that it worked. You had no clue what he was going to do next and that led to some funny storylines. He was never supposed to replace Micheal Scott but created some interesting dynamics in the show. Season 9 is where the show died, I just skip most of it to get to the finale. 8 is at least watchable.
Alex absolutely. Robert California was the anti Michael. Will Ferrell was brought in to the show to prove why having another Michael like character would have been terrible. The only way was to replace him with someone the complete opposite. Robert California. A similar Michael would leave us missing Michael and thinking “Michael would have done that better”. Instead we got a new fresh take from California.
Season 8 gets panned because people were throwing their toys out of the pram as Micheal had left. Of course the show wouldn't be as good but it was still funny and managed to keep my attention. I also enjoyed the Florida arc.

I like your point of view of when the Office Died. And yes I can see how Niagra could be marked as the end. A lot of things changed after that, But here's how I break down the show. IT really has three parts to it. The first Starts at the pilot and ends with Broke. The second part Starts at Casual Day and end with Goodbye Michael. And the third part starts at The Inner circle to the End. I view the third part as just extra episodes or just bonus content.

I agree, but the biggest mistake was not making Dwight the manager immediately(there was so much to work with), Robert California, Gabe and Nelly were terrible fits and weren't needed. Also I think Andy's character changed for the worse in the last 2 seasons. While I think season 9 was pretty good, season 8 was terrible with only a few decent episodes. I too watch it everyday before bed.
I wish we could have seen Michaels wedding, and I know that Steve left the show to be in movies and no longer shows, I think that it would have been good. I think that the seasons without Michael we’re okay but some episodes were terrible. Dwight really kept my interest in the show after Michael left and I actually started liking nelly after a while and the relationship between Erin and Pete was okay, but think that show tried making another Pam and Jim with Erin and Pete, a secretary already dating someone is liked by a co worker and then end up together
The ending should have been Holly and Michael’s wedding instead of Angela and Dwights. They could have made it where Dwight and Angela where just happily dating. Personally, Michael was the best character and would do anything to see more of his life with his family.

Season 6, episode 14 "The Banker" is a good spot to end the series. That was a clip show episode. After that, the next episode was "Sabre" were we got new characters Jo Bennett and Gabe, that's when the show started to go down. They would add more characters later like Nellie and Robert California, and none of them were enjoyable to watch. When I re-watch the series, I watch up through "The Banker" and then stop.

- Jim v Dwight prank wars
Jim & Pam romance grew very stale after their wedding and the show did terrible job trying to replace the romance onto other characters.
Then, Michael Scott left which left HUGE hole which none of the other characters could even hope to replace. No one could come close to the talent and humor of Steve Carrel.
Which left the prank wars as the only pillar the show had left standing on; even that grew somewhat stale.
The show tried very relentlessly to replace the pillars but failed to do so over and over, resulting in the slow death of the show after season 7.

I agree. Even at it's lowest, it had more heart and better characters than the vast majority of programs out there. I also think it redeemed itself with an excellent finale, tying things up in a satisfying and heartwarming way.

From the first time i witnessed Michael giving a bag of candy to some kids during halloween, that scene melted my heart and he became my sole reason to support the show (Jim and Pam are not bad too).

what!!!!!!! Ricky Gervais is the one who created The Office with Stephen Merchant, Greg Daniels seriously, dude you can check that anywhere. The Office UK is the original show and then as usual America made it own version and now you are trying to take the credit.
I watched The Office for the first time all the way through this year (I'm a changed man) and I can honestly say people overdramatize the post Michael departure. I think it's a great show all the way through.

Yes, I always restart watching when Michael left. My favorite episode is the basketball game. And yes for me Nellie and Robert California were awful.

Robert was minimally amusing; nellie was the worst character, her voice being downrigh annoying. Andy went from a funny character (before the career shift), to a cringey character til the last few episodes.

The show died when Andy became Michael, Robert California was great if they would have left him domineering.. Ed Helms was so unlikable it hurt, he was much better as a side kick

Honestly, a ton of these characters would have been fine if they would have just let them be the characters they were when they started the show. I get that people evolve, but they evolve very slowly. Andy, for instance, was much much darker when they first started. I liked him when he was trying to curry favor with Dwight etc.. But then all of a sudden he's a super competent Michael replacement... Characters are allowed to change and should, but not 180 degrees in two episodes...
Andy has always been the worst character on the show, edd helms is an amazing actor but on the office he seemed like an useless character and the only thing he did antagonize and anger the other character
I didn't care for Andy in the final two seasons. So, it's crazy that he also has three of my favorite moments from those seasons: 3) Erin confronting Andy, not realizing he's on speaker phone with David Wallace. 2) Andy singing "Time of Your Life." 1) Andy's "good old days" quote.
Dwight was my favourite when i first started the show then Michael then ultimately Creed.

Creed is definitely one of my favorites. It sucks he was such a minor character, but tbh that's kind of what made him great, because he would just have like 1 line every once in a while, and they were so weird and awesome.

One of the things I realize that puts me off in later seasons of the office is how cartoonish a lot of characters' behavious become. Characters like Creed and Kevin are a lot more balanced in early seasons, which makes their actions a lot more believable. I cringe everytime I see that Creed would just show up at work with a shirt full of blood. It's a joke at the expense of the character's credibility.

yes, exactly!! all the realism in the show died, it was no longer true to itself. The "mockumentary" theme they established so well in the earlier seasons was lost.

Well-Dressed Redhead agreed! that was one plot point that really bothered me because the rest of the series had set him up as someone who, despite being kind of snobbish, was still a rational voice of reason with pretty strong morals

I recently just watched seasons 8-9 for the first time and I do feel like they hyped up Andy and Erin just to give them a downfall super quick a season later

And D'Angelo too. When that character came in, he literally started the decline of The Office then killed it completely after Michael completely left.

I think the worst part about when Michael left was Andy, who could not bring to the table what Michael did.
The fact that Robert didn’t fit was the exact reason why he was hilarious. People were too used to Michael and obviously expected Robert to be the same.
However the final season *ruined* Andy and added two new characters that did nothing to push the story forward.

I think it died at the episode "get the girl" you know the one where nelly is introduced as a major character and steals Andy’s job and the one where the warehouse baloon falls and Pam says "an end of an era " as season 8 was quite funny but nelly just annoys me so much! Also Andy gets Erin and it’s just kinda cringe.
It's true! This was a weird direction and it lead to a repeated arc where Andy loses his job as regional manager and creates a new company and eventually remains it, much the same way Michael Scott did in an earlier season. It was a dumb way to start a repeated arc that we didn't need to see again. And yeah after so much time setting up Andy and Erin as a good couple they eventually ditched it and gave her a new love interest within the space of one season...
I'm glad that someone agrees with my opinion of Season 8. I remember hearing that Season 8 was the best season of the Office when I started watching the series and now having watched the Office, I strongly disagree. I heavily disliked Robert California and felt that he and Andy did not satisfy the absence of Michael Scott. Robert California was many things, like self absorbed and disgusting, but he was not funny imo. And Andy only became the boss because he was the character with the personality closest to Michael's, but his character was unable to provide what Michael was able to. I did not find Season 8 to be that funny and, while it's nice that there are two extra seasons of The Office to watch, the show definitely lost what made it mind blowing and a gem in television history.

I don’t think Andy was trying to replace Michael Scott. I think he was trying to do his own thing and I thought he was a perfect fit for that position
