My girlfriend is autistic and I had literally no idea until we were already serious. I fr hate these kind of shows that both try to normalize/misrepresent autism, or treat it like some crazy, “we are not the same” power - knock it off, shits corny.
As an autist, the biggest complaint I have is Hollywood portrays only the savant. People only want to see the Savant hero who over comes the odds to be a star for me pattern recognition and finance is my jam not nearly as entertaining as a character like rain man
I always though House was more compassionate and kind than people thought. His terrible childhood and drug abuse affected Him. You got a lot of glimpses if you paid attention. I rewatch the series every couple of years. I do the same with Dexter.
Extraordinary Attorney Woo is a Korean show that handles autism pretty well with the main character growing and learning throughout. It got a lot of critical acclaim too and worth a watch
This is a very good point. Autism in hollywood kind of relates to how there needs to be more "bad" versions of these characters, same thing I think applies to homosexual characters
THANK YOU! you saved me 126 hours of my life. I've had it on my list for a while, but I had my suspensions. I'm tired of the, autism=superhuman intelligence.
thanks for making a video about this from someone with asd. I have come to think that I'd rather have no representation than "wrong" representation. it gives people a false idea about how asd affects those who have it.
I will praise the Good Doctor for accurately portraying the HUD that all autistic people, myself included, were born with. They don't call it a "different ability" for nothing
As an intersex male who's ND with Tourettes I couldn't even give the good doctor a chance based off the commercials and alienation of the protagonist with exactly everything you've said
I remember someone in the comments of a random video with that iconic moment saying that either consider him dead or he's screwed if he had him as his surgeon
10:50 Also, what's even more annoying about this episode, is that statistically a lot of autistic people are transgender, both becouse genetically thos4 two things are more likely to be inherited together, and because autistic people cwn have completelly diferent concepts an of of gender (and gender roles) from non-autistic people. So to make a "autistic representation" character transphobic is even more disgusting
Challenge: In Captain planet and the plantiers! There's a legendary vehicle known as the eco glider which planetier actually build it and what are all of its legendary features beyond being solar powered although I would like you to heavily mention that this runs on solar energy!
I think that giving a character autism is fine but not making autism the character like Dwight in the office. Dwight obviously has autism but it’s never talked about
Thank you for bringing up those two episodes! I binge-watched the first season one-week last summer with my mom, and the way they used his autism as a "lesson of the week" style format in a lot of those episodes felt very demeaning. As if his having autism somehow made the bigotry have logic, even if it were absurd like the poisoned woman being called a terrorist without real evidence. The transphobia episode pissed me off a lot if he had truly been memorizing modern medical textbooks since childhood he would have undoubtedly come across something mentioning transgender or intersex individuals, especially in genetics where you learn that there are more than XX and XY from intersex conditions and other sex-related conditions. The lesson of the week format really didn't seem to address when Shawn was in the right (or at least not the one at fault) in scenarios either, such as much of the emotional or social faux pas of the later parts of season one with him being disregarded or ignored completely by his mentor (the cancer plotline and the romantic plotlines). A lot of stuff wouldn't be his fault at times, but the other characters just got to blame his autism with their own interpersonal behavior rarely being questioned unless they were extreme (like the punch or a breakdown)
I'm autistic but I LOVE the good doctor. I dont think its that accurate but after my Mom watched it our relationship improved. So whatever message it sent, benefitted me.
You basically nailed it right with this. If people are interested in a better depiction of autism I would suggest As We See It. Which aired on Amazon Prime. It got cancelled after one season because it wasn't a major franchise
Never got around to watching this show, so I should skip this video right? I don’t have to watch every single video 10k puts out… right? Who am I kidding
I just found the show dull and the side characters cliched. Also the Shaun character was stereotype of the annoying autist who is self entitled. I know heaps of people on the spectrum, the program didn't show any social coping methods like masking, over attaching, people pleasing and societal mimicry.
They made anyone who had even the slightest criticism of him the villain, even if it was valid. Shaun is an asshole, and he needs to learn to deal with people

they chose to make his character seem spaztic and its disgusting. i have dealt with being treated differently. people have no idea i have autism until i say it, and because of portrayals like this, people will treat me very different because of it.
And on the opposite of that, people seem to love Sheldon from Big Bang Theory. The way he's written and portrayed, he has a lot of signs of being autistic or having Asperger's. Yet they play it off as "That's how geeks are", and that, strikes me in a negative way. I hate to say it offends me, because then that just fuels the people who want to be hateful to go "Oooo, you got offended! Ooooo you're triggered!".
I remember a skit i watched a while ago where a doctor use a trans womens male name and the individual corrected him and the doctor was like "well, maam you have testicular cancer.

Atypical on Netflix has FAR better representation of the realities of ASD than The Good Sturgeon.
