Having test driven Tesla model y, RAV4 PHEV, 3008 PHEV, Volvo XC60 PHEV, Q3 PHEV, Tiguan PHEV I think a PHEV is the perfect solution for a one family car. Electric during your daily city runs and during the weekends you can go everywhere without worrying about charging. I am leaning towards Volvo XC60 T8 PHEV but if that Chinese car was on sale today I would much more prefer to pay 50k instead of 65k the Volvo costs. Having more range on a PHEV and having the car to work predominantly on the electric motors and keeping the ice as a secondary more assistive role is the way to go. The Chinese sooner or later will dominate the car market.
Give a test drive to the X5 45e, much better than XC90 in terms of both electric range (I constantly hit 80KM) and transition from electric to petrol and the other way around. Plus you get the BMW 6 cylinder engine which sounds great
Sure, that Chinese car may be cheaper, but eventually it could lead to your own economy and your own income suffering. The labor used to produce that Chinese car is paid significantly less than the workers in your country, and they get less benefits and protections. Further, buying a car build in China by a Chinese company leads to a trade deficit. As Paul Krugman likes to say, "My spending is your income, and your spending is my income". When everyone is buying from China, and they're not buying any of our stuff, then "My spending is their income, and their spending is their income". People really need to consider the impacts of their purchases on the economy, based one where the production facilities and HQs are located. BTW, why buy a "green" car produced in China with their pretty terrible environmental policy and huge coal use? If your decision to buy a PEV has anything to do with the environment, then you're kind of sabotaging that goal.
@@updlate4756 That all sounds great. Maybe you should dump your iphone, your macbook/desktop your household appliances and your cars now, because you are already supporting Chinese manufacturers.
Looks like a winner in terms of looks, feature content etc. Only brand snobbery might limit sales, but that will be a shame because a lot of Chinese cars have already proven to be reliable and durable. In my country we get many Chinese vehicles, including the Great Wall Motors Wingle pick up. Compared with the VW Amarok, yes it's little to no comparison in terms of refinement, but the GWM's last A LOT longer than the VWs. After about 4 years, the VWs have engine issues, especially the diesels, and the interiors look very tired with worn buttons and stretched/sometimes drooping upholstery.
This is a very interesting car. Looks really good, both interior and exterior. The price is extremely competitieve, goes in the right direction; something what we need because the German competition is way to expensive right now.
In my opinion it not an interesting car, it is a prototype from China, the Chinese idea. Let's wait for final car being sold in Germany with official price, guarantee plan, dealers and service networks. Thomas will test it, compare with the competition and then we will say sth reasonable.
This configuration makes sense for large thirsty SUVs, like Kodiaq, especially in slow traffic, no wonder Thomas looked a little intimidated :)) so do I, by the refinement and insulation. WEY should probably introduce the smaller sibling, macchiato, to EU, to rival other med-size PHEV (Tiguan, RAV4, or MG HS etc.). The progression made in China's car design and manufacturing is really very scary.
@@Tomoyo0827 He is aiming at the European car manufacturers ,they should not loose there position by underestimating the Chinese ( that's why he uses the words "scary " )...not so long ago the Chinese were not even considered to be competition ,but things have changed very rapidly !
@@Tomoyo0827 When you look at the human rights issues in China, and you look at how closely connected most companies in China are to what is one of the most controversial governments in the world, you have to wonder if the companies are tainted. You know that they are feeding the political machinations of the Chinese Government whether or not they want to because Chinese Law and tax structures simply require it, and may even require them to engage in surveillance behaviors with such products, whether or not they want to, because Chinese Law is strucutred in such a way so that the government can just demand any sort of data from Chinese Companies and they must hand it over. That alone would turn me away from any Chinese Automobile, because the human rights violations and spying concerns would turn me away completely. I want no part of either.
it feels like the growing influx of chinese brands is really about to change the landscape for legacy makers, much the same as we have seen in the past with Japan and South Korea and even Tesla...this is arriving with sophisticated design, good apparent quality and good pricing/value proposition. This is also an interesting positioning of a long range phev which will allay many worries for consumers
@@naitud China's regime is one of the worst in the world. Great review, I think at this moment hybrids are a much more practical solution, full electric has way too many compromises for most people, seems like a super competitive offering from China perhaps the other European manufacturers need to look at this as it seems to be a great blend of economy and practicality. Merry Xmas to Autogefuhl and a happy new year.
Honestly people complaining about the chinese Name and quality should go buy an Audi and enjoy their problems and rocket fast value depreciation. I think this car looks solid and price is very competitive for what it offers.
Had to watch this a few more times.......I really hope this, or something like, makes it's way to the US. Large-battery PHEV has such appeal. Alex really knows his product !
Great video. Very nice introduction to this blend of a car. I like the jokes you made. I wish to the whole team nice Christmas and good health. About the car. I feel very sad that the Europeans did not make this first. I'm talking about this kind of vehicle for a long time. A hibryd with a lot of range and power and an ICE engine for longer trips. This car needs EURONCAP rating, 5 stars there and a 7-10 years warranty will make it verry attractive.
I really like this car! It would be great if more PHEVs had this type of electric only range. 90 miles is huge! Although, there may be a point at which too much electric only range makes it pointless and you should get a full EV. If you rarely make long trips, the gas could get stale since it never gets used. I think 40-50 miles of range is ideal.
I am chinese. This is a special behavior in the Chinese market, and its fundamental lies in increasing the competitiveness of vehicles. But this increases the cost of the vehicle, and it is the consumer who ultimately consumes these additional costs. I personally think that Volkswagen’s 1.4T+P2 motor is a golden combination (even in China, a battery of about 13kwh is far enough for PHEV models). However, even German OEM manufacturers are constantly following up on this kind of behavior in this competition. For example, the E350e in China provides consumers with a 25.4kwh battery, but the 2021 E CLASS PHEV in the European market is only 13.5kWh. Battery (in China, it is called E350eL, because it is an extended model)
I must confess I like the car. First I thought it was too expensive, but we are talking about a 455 bhp car. We've got normal PHEV for 40k with standard
Yes Chinese brands have some strange names that don't carry much prestige, take BYD for example, stands for 'Build Your Dreams' 🤦♂️🤷♂️ pleasant enough, but hardly a name you are going to shout about down the club lol. Having said that, few people in europe shout the name 'Bavarian Motor Works' when talking about their BMW lol 😅
It is quite normal here in China, you could get nicer interior and exterior with a lower price. And the performance is also not bad. And loads of equipments. And for BEV, I could say Chinese market is leading at the moment. And Chinese brands are among the best ones.
I think that there is a market for introducing competition in driving price reduction. I do however feel that established quality brands also rely on a critical psychological factor - in other words, people feel that they have a premium vehicle. That's not something that you can easily introduce as a newly recognised brand.
Another great review. I recently purchased a 2021 c class cabriolet instead of waiting for the new models. All manufactures and especially Mercedes are drastically changing their philosophies. Trends are towards electric and over six figures for cabriolets. As an owner of BMW and Mercedes, I think they will most likely be my last. I'm liking almost everything I'm seeing coming out of Asia(more than Germany) and also some US companies like Tesla and Lucid. Germany seems to be trying to play catch up. Fancy flat screens and higher HP EVs are not selling points to me. If I had to purchase today, I would lean towards a highly reliable hybrid from Lexus or other Japanese company because I do a lot of touring and skiing.
I think you’re disgraceful for promoting a vehicle that funds the CCP and it’s human rights violations through the PLA and other oppressive means. Shame on you! 🤨

Thomas, please review the Haval H6. It is quite interesting proposal from GWM, sharing the same platform and it is available in some EU countries. I am very interested how will it compare to the Kodiak.
we have the BMW 225xe active tourer PHEV. We thought that we are happy with it until we saw the range, power, size and price of this GWM WEY Coffee 01 PHEV. It's the same price as our BMW, but the electric range is so much better, the power is higher, the interior space greater and also the better 0-60 and 0-100. I think I would trade our BMW PHEV with this GWM WEY Coffee 01 PHEV if it would have 10 year warranty and a close service center. A full electric car would not suit us since the lack of charging infrastructure and the prices they have. A PHEV suits our lifestyle and the journeys we do
My friend bought used 2018 BMW 225xe ...range was ridiculous ..it sad 50km but reality was 20-25 km ..so it was just waste off time to charge it ..so he put it on sale and lost some money...pointless car
@@dzonikg we also bough ours used and the real EV range is indeed 20-25 km. I knew that was the reality when we got it. For us this range works great since it allows me to get my kids to school and back, or go to church and get back home entirely in EV mode. Indeed, a greater range would have been much better. Next car will have greater EV range. But for what I payed for, I could not get a plug-in hybrid with better range, quicker 0-100 km/h, roomier interior and similar ergonomics and drivability.
Every commuter with home or work charging has plenty with such electric range. Will it also be satisfactory for 1000 km drives compared to similar sized petrol unit? Then it's a win-win in terms of energy costs. The smaller battery vs an e-tron 55 or even Model Y would save some costs, but the petrol engine adds production cost and maintenance.
Average r/t commute in Germany is only 34 km. So long as the person has access to nightly charging, even a 10-15 kWh battery would be sufficient for getting to work and back on battery range alone. For a 1000 km drive, the difference between 34 km of range and 145 km of range is a petrol savings over 110 km. Not all that much if you only take 1000 km trips a few times a year. Otherwise, the heavier battery in the will reduce efficiency of every mile the car ever drives. So even those 34 km commutes will use more energy as a result of this larger battery weighing the vehicle down.
A nice car with reservations:-Im am not a fan of these flush door handles that come out. What happens when its really cold? What happens when the batteries are really low in power? And crucially what happens in an accident? And dont get me going on distracting touchscreens.... Im not having a go at WEY in general because they arent the only carmaker doing it...
I wonder if automotive UI engineers can ever program dial controls with multi-touch in mind, where you're mimicking turning a knob with 2 or more fingers in a twisting motion. I suspect that would feel more natural and stable than sticking a finger out and swiping a small defined area for a line or arc with the arm and shoulder out on a long leverage - where your fingers can be more natural in a bent state and your weight can rest on multiple digits providing more stable head and upper body support.
Nice video Thomas. Interesting car. Shame it's not full EV but I understand people want more range plus some countries don't have good charging infrastructure. I have a burning question I wanted to ask you Thomas, what brand of car do you drive and which model????
Did they say something about the production facilities in EU? When first deliveries are planned? Any news about service network (Germany only?)? I know, I'm shooting questions but it is highly interesting how they want to launch a Chinese car in EU.
How terribly inefficient. 42 kWh for just 150 km of electric range in WLTP? Tesla Model Y gets over 500 km with just 75 kWh: almost double the km/kWh! PHEV is really not needed anymore. Just go full electric and ditch the hassle of still driving a petrol car with all the noise, pollution, maintenance costs, etc.
What you says makes total sense if you drive to work and back. In my case, sometimes I need to drive up to 1.6k. distance in a day and with electric car on a highway at speed of 150 km/h I would probably get a range of around 300 km. (assuming I have one of the best electric cars out there). I'd need to stop at least 5 times to charge. Assuming you can't really count on 100% charging and it is winter, probably even 6 times. It gives something like 5 hours of charging? Can be even more. With solid hybrid or this Way here, you get 550/600 km. range. In result, I need to stop 2 times which takes less than 10 minutes for each stop. You still recommend me to go full electric?;-)
This guy shouldn't exaggerate negatives to BEVs. 100 kWh batteries will almost never take 2 hours to charge on a DCFC. It's optimal to charge them up from 10% to between 50% and 80%. 50% may only take 10-15 minutes. 80% may only take 25 - 40 minutes. That said, it doesn't mean PHEVs don't make sense. I'm just not sure a battery this large in a PHEV makes sense. PHEVs make a ton of sense because battery supply is still limited. 42 kWh is less than half of what this would need to be a full BEV. I think they could have gone as low as 25-30 kWh and still been fine since a lot of people will have access to charge every night. The extra EV range has little benefit on the occasional long trip, and all it's doing is adding weight, thereby reducing daily efficiency. I guess if someone has a longer commute, or wants to use this as a taxi, then maybe the extra range comes in handy. I guess the larger battery also helps with horsepower from the EV system.
This car would be a good seller if only they named it something more appropriate for the western market. People don't want a car named something daft like that but for different markets it should be named to fit the language.
Lindo veiculo com linhas marcantes más estou achando os freios um pouco pequenos pela potencia nobre deste carro! Ótimo canal e não perco nenhum video🚗🎶🎵😉
I also have a car like this. It looks good, has good power, and is perfect. I have driven Audi A4, bmw Q5, and Land Rover, but they are not as good as WEY.
Great video thank you and merry xmas! I think car will be good value for the money. From the video infotaiment looked a bit outdated, climate control is awfull, suspension seems to be weak at least before tuning. If you can live with those, car will be nice! Then again i am wondering why not just make it full electric? Why keep all that extra weight there what comes from engine, transmission and exhaust?
The extra weight will be offset by the reduction in battery size to a certain extent, then you'll be able to reduce range anxiety. Remember the battery in PHEV car can be used practically down to zero while you have to reserve normally at least 10 to 20 percent of battery in a full EV.
Because PHEV is the future and EV is the distant future. A lot of people still rejects EV because of range anxiety and for good reasons, they have further commutes or don't want to deal with charging for road trips. So I think PHEV is an important transition for EVs and captures the market that EVs can't get
What is about Dealership, Service, Guarantee ? Always the same... The numbers (prices, range, etc.) are great. But it has to be proof how good the "quality" is all around the first impressions.

the charging speed at 80kW (20mn) is impressive now, at 14:00 saying a 100kWh takes 2hrs to charge isn't very fair/realistic. Of course he wants this PHEV to sell instead :) saying the interior is vegan is fine, but I guess it's not really renewable else it would have been stated: so plastic/petroleum everywhere.
Or get stale gas. I suppose once or twice a week, you drive it in hybrid mode so the engine turns on when you floor it. Then keep it in electric only the rest of the time.
Good to see more competition coming to the market.. This like so many other EVs and, PHEV vehicles are just either compromised or too expensive.. I feel the market is just like the Wild West and needs to improve in so many ways before I would change my car. I like many people are not convinced by the EV argument.. Price (for a good one with usable range), the weight, the future of EV (grants are being cut, charging infrastructure development being cut back, possible taxing of EV coming, government control of home chargers) so much uncertainty.. I like the idea of a decent range phev but is it just having an ICE to service on top of the EV platform? I really liked the Toyota RAV4 but the price for a dated interior design just stopped me buying it.. No pure EVs interest me for the instant.. What can we all do with crazy governments pushing people into technology that isn't going to be ready for 2030... Ready for 2-3% of the population but the rest of us? Add in failure to invest in electricity generation and we have a big problem looming....
The drivetrain seems awesome, a longer range PHEV for single car family. The infotainment is terrible, seems very few companies are interested in making a decent user interface and it's all about the screen dazzle.... I hope companies outside China can think about this approach to PHEV.

Price at 50,000 euros is considering as competitive in Germany? The petrol one is only cost half of it in China..
Why do you use words like intimidate and scary?? The world welcomes more good EVs from whatever country they may from.

Thanks and merry Christmas!
just hit 5 star euro ncap
Bigger battery does not just mean more range...but much bigger longevity ..because much less recharge cycles

I think that there is a market for introducing competition in driving price reduction. I do however feel that established quality brands also rely on a critical psychological factor - in other words, people feel that they have a premium vehicle. That's not something that you can easily introduce as a newly recognised brand.
Hope you have the chance to review more chinesse car brands such as haval and byd.
If I had to purchase today, I would lean towards a highly reliable hybrid from Lexus or other Japanese company because I do a lot of touring and skiing.

we have the BMW 225xe active tourer PHEV.
This is excellent "transition", some engine and bigger battery but price is little high.
Knobs are made for turning. Touch screens are made for tapping and swiping. Why implement turning on a touch screen?
Nice video Thomas. Interesting car. Shame it's not full EV but I understand people want more range plus some countries don't have good charging infrastructure. I have a burning question I wanted to ask you Thomas, what brand of car do you drive and which model????

What is the range of the battery alone on highway
42kwh for a PHEV is ridiculous, but I like it.
seemed the engine sound was a bit loud in the cabin when accelerating ?
I guess the larger battery also helps with horsepower from the EV system.
sat in it at the IAA, and loved it! Would prefer it to my Audi Q5 55TFSIe tbh. It has better range and plenty of space.

Merry xmas!
