I was fortunate enough to get a brand new and original (stamped) M44 aluminium canister for free from a friend which bought up surplus stuff when Sweden was disarming 15-20 years ago or when that was. I never had any plans to use it until you showed the complete kit in a video, then I started searching and last year found an almost new M44 burner kit with the plastic bottle and all on Tradera for under $20. Will try out the complete M44 this summer!

There is one thing I'd like to mention. If you look at your packability section, you could look at it like this: if you use a comparable packaging size of the m44 for the mini, then you have space to add food, coffee, collapsible cup, utensils, small bottle of spirits, etc. in this way, the Trangia Mini may actually win that category as well. Thanks for the video, Red!!

    • @RedswedeOutdoors

Thanks Chad! In total the m44 isn't the better choice for slimming pack size even with all the junk I can fit inside, that's true. I was more looking on what can live in each kit always for a 'grab and go' so to speak. Cheers!

@@RedswedeOutdoors yessir, I totally understand. And I was on eBay last night looking yet again for an m40/44 to buy, when it dawned on me that I have the Esbit 5-Piece Trekking Cookset that can run solid/gel fuels or has an included alcohol burner, or can even use wood fire. Volume wise (just a bit less), and versatility wise, it's basically the modern m40/44. So, now I look for some other new piece of kit to buy 😂 cheers, my friend!

      Yes, my thoughts too.
What one forgets is that 'stuff' stored inside the cook set and not used at the time, has to be kept elsewhere .. sometimes lying about nilly-willy, whereas, if kept in a dedicated pouch / container, just that required at any point in time is removed, leaving the other where it should be.
Definition of 'Order' .. 'When there is a place for everything and everything is in it's place .. always!' Sorry, I'm being facetious .. but just had to add that 😁.

Entertaining as always. The first time I used my mini I couldn't believe how much a slight breeze affected it. I've now got a decent aluminium windshield. But I have a question, can 2 mini pots nest with each other? Can 2 minis be combined? I.E. carry 2 minis. One for making coffee whilst the other is cooking.

Excellent comparison! Got the Trangia 28 mini and the 27, the PFM40 and an original Swedish army M40 I found in a thriftstore here in the Netherlands for under €20, with a burner, fuel bottle and postwar windshield. An absolute steal! Save that one as the collectable it is and use the PFM40 as an user. That little Trangia mini is such a joy to use and so compact.

When I first got into camp cooking I got an austrian 3piece mess kit with a swedish M44 windscreen/trangia combo (the only parts that are cheap!). I had to modify the windscreen to fit the austrian cookware, total cost was like $35. I like that the pot is spacious for a lot of food and the windscreen is excellent. The total package is so large and oblong for how little it actually does though. I bought a T25 later and with two bowls and a kettle it's basically smaller and easier to pack. I like mess kits for car camping or lending to a friend who may be cooking but more likely just needs serving dishes. I think it's a valuable tool but mostly novelty!

I agree with you, but I think you went easy on the M44 by putting it against the 28. IMHO the M44’s real competitor, based on size and weight is the 27. A 27 will beat it in every single area. The M44 is the equivalent of the Trophy Wife. Expensive and nice to own but good for nothing but showing off. Big surprise was that the mini won the boil test! That windshield must be doing something right! 😉

I haven't tried the T27 yet, but if it's anything like the T25 it would be a humiliating victory. About the boil test, there wasn't even a breeze that day so no wind shield was required. I think it's more about the new burners being much better than the old. Cheers Paul!

Good comparison, I have the Mini, Micro, and the PFM40 and they are both good kits. More often I will take the Mini just because of the packing size, but the M40 goes to larger events that I am cooking for two or more people. I don't think there is a wrong choice here. The Micro on the other hand is a boil only kit that is for hiking with bag meals.

I use alcohol stoves all the time and one thing I noticed is that weather conditions will absolutely kill performance. A bit of wind can easily make you spend 3 times mote fuel.
You had to ad an extra windshield to the mini. And if it is blowing a bit more, that windshield is going to blow away.
I prefer the m44 because its windshield is more reliable and always ready to go, and i can carry stuff inside. It also works well for quick stew like dishes which is what I prefer anyways, I dont care about frying stuff.
Truth be told, it boils down to personal preference.

Even if this particular "competition" was made tounge in cheek, there's no way that I could convince a die hard m44 user to trade it in for a T28 or vice versa. You found the kit that works for you and that's what counts. Cheers!

    Great video as always.

    • @RedswedeOutdoors
      @RedswedeOutdoors  Місяць тому

Good point Paul. I haven't tried out the difference between them but I find both of them relatively stable since they have the centre of gravity fairly low, specially compared to many gas burner systems as you mention. @@RedswedeOutdoors Yeah I know eh? Those boil times are useful to know how much power you have, and sometimes the efficiency, but who cares if it takes 2 min or 4? I’ve even seen people brag about how fast their stove will cool too. But it’s all about finding something that fits your needs. My stove is great for certain times, like an over nighter, but I love my firebox stoves (the 4.5 inch, now in titanium, and the nano in steel), and this fit more conventional pots and pans.

    Good Morning Red ..
Perhaps the M44 is showing it's age in this comparison. I love my Mini 28 .. but one should always show respect for one's Elders 😏.
I would very much like to have a M44 Set. Do I need it? No! (but then, that doesn't count, does it? 😁). Also, my budget (and space) is a factor .. although 🤔 ..
For those out there who are interested (as a worth-while compromise), I have added (amongst other) to the Mini 28, a 'Quechua MH 100 1.1 L Stainless Steel 1-Person Camping Cookset' from my Decathlon Store in Basel, Switzerland for the Dollar equivalent of $19.99.
It comes with a Plastic Bowl and Folding Plastic Spoon, which I have removed for use elsewhere. The Mini 28 in it's Bag, fits snugly into the Quechua Pot .. no rattling whatsoever.
For those who wish it upgrade their Mini 28 to something larger, this option is worth consideration. Obviously any suitable pot will do .. but I liked the Quechua Stainless Steel Pot with its locking Lid and Strainer .. and the price.
Always a pleasure watching your Posts. I tried the 'Popeyes and Hats' in my Trangia 28 Mini. With a topping of Bacon, Sliced Tomato, Onion and Chilli Sauce .. yum 😋.

You know I’m a big fan of M40, I would even say that the M44 is a replica of the M40.
I totally agree with you though, the M40/44 is really over hyped. Interesting compression, even though it’s a little unfair. The M40 should be compared with the 27 or even the 25, cause of the size of the pots. And both the 25 and 27 are way superior to the M40.
The largest problem to compare the Mini and the M40 is that it is like comparing your left shoe with your right shoe. Even though they serve the same purpose you need both to be pleased
