Not sure about the green light but I've heard many times that red light won't break your eye adaptation to see in the dark while regular light would and you would have to spend time to adapt to darkness again.
ESSE is top tier stuff. I live in a rural part of Montana in the US and spend much time in the wilderness. I've had and needed only one bushcraft knife and it's an ESSE Laser Strike. I've been using for years without issue or need of another fixed blade

Personally I would , and have put together before , a Survival Pouch according to John " Lofty " Wiseman from his " SAS Survival Handbook . You could use some of the elements of your ESEE Mess Tin . Mr. Wiseman included electrolytes , a brew kit , dried meat like jerky , and instead of using lard or ghee , like he did , I would use coconut oil . He also packed signal flares and chocolate . I found it to be a fun challenge to try and include all the items of his kit into a mess tin . I really like your channel keep up the good work ! ! !
I have that survival handbook, both the one that came out in the early 1990's (with the blue cover and the revised version from just a decade ago with the cammo cover.
Re. Flares - I couldn’t help laughing when I saw the evasion card in this kit - yeah, not being found when in a survival situation is exactly the opposite of what you want and tell me everything I need to know about people who buy these kits. They don’t want a little tin to keep in the bottom of their bag whilst outdoors just in case, they are LARPers (Live Action Role Players) but instead of wearing elf ears and medieval clothes pretending to be on epic adventures, they wear camo and pretend they are in a combat zone. I remember quite distinctly passing the fattest tub of lard crouched in a bush, wearing camo face paint and wearing a backpack covered in little military-ish patches and pouches of no doubt, this sort of stuff in this kit. We said hello and he ran away!
Bit of a baffler - quality swiss army knife but a American orientated bass ( predatory ) fishing kit for the UK market ?. Like the multifunction trip line but no plasters or a bandage in there ! . Like the purification tablets and the matches . Don't like the knife , rather have an Opinel #6 or #8 for the longer blade and more glove wearing friendly handle . Ferro rod seems quality . Really like ( and i make my own ) the waxed jute , just i use it in a copper tube like a match / candle . Not sure about the snare wire as i fit brass eyes to let the snare slide as find plain wire can bend and snag instead of tightening And weirdly it dosn't have a wire saw , not super good but they are useful , especially for cutting a fishing pole etc . ( where a longer bladed knife lets you batton off the side branches without hitting your hand with the batton ) At £200 i would have expected a manual chainsaw style instead of the wire saw but there's neither ?. Suppose the marker tape could be used to wrap a piece of cut shirt over a wound , but a bandage would be better . And i'd be laying a micro fibre cloth in the bottom and placing the contents in over it so there's a cloth for cleaning / drying . And the addition of a chapstick would be nice , start a fire then cover a burn or use it on your lips in the winter . But it's ok though pricy as the contents swing from quality to cheap making it difficult to make up your mind ..
In my compact little kit I have a curved and straight upholstery needle along with a small pack of dental floss. Can't break it and it works fantastic for mending everything from tents to tarps and shoes. I also have a little wooden handle awl and twine for heavy duty stitching. OBTW: The dental floss can also double as a stringer for fish you've caught.
The red light is to preserve your night vision and is the hardest to be seen by others. The green works well for following a blood trial at night. It makes the blood drops shine and easier to see.
My pack survival kit has always been in 2 army mess tins its a no brainer. I have variations on what goes in it depending on the terrain and weather. I also have a small bull brand baccy from poundland for fishing kit, sowing kit and asprin, paracetomol and ibuprofen sealed with waterproof tape used for temporary plumming fixes (a game changer, its awesome stuff) my pocket kit is full sized baccy tin that can be used as a boiling pot aswell. Fits in most field dressing pocket in army issue jackets/smocks if it aint on you it aint gonna help in dire survival situations .. i put ALOT of survival kit in jacket seams aswell.
It's always good to see what people are producing and how useful they may actually be/ what I'd adapt for my own use. I'm surprised that tin didn't have a mylar blanket, as it's such a cheap and easy thing to add, but so very handy. For less than £200, you could buy all that separately (especially on Temu) and have a tarp etc as well. I'll stick with my Opinel No 8. I look forward to the multi-day kit.
Hey Mike. What it is with red light is, it doesn't take away your night vision. Night vision is mainly monochrome and a red light doesn't stimulate the same receptors in your eye.
The human eye is most sensitive to green, so the green light is an OK idea since you'll get the best bang for buck out of that tiny battery. Only problem is color rendition when reading maps - green lines will be very faint, some other colors may appear black. For a survival kit, I think white is the better choice.
Personally my preferred Swiss Army Knife is the Huntsman. I have always regarded the Philips screwdriver that is swapped out for the corkscrew a bit "not very good" (substitute your own one word replacement). The Huntsman has the same tools plus a pairs of scissors. I know the cordage can be cut with one of the blades but I still think the scissors helps improve the usefulness of the Huntsman over the Hiker (the included model). As I always pack a bottle of wine in my rucksack I am always prepared in the event of needing an emergency drink of Châteauneuf-du-Pape by using the corkscrew to open the bottle. Please excuse the fact that I use an enamelled mug to drink it but carrying a lead crystal glass means it's likely to get smashed.
Maybe you've already made a video like this, but I'd love to see you take some of your favorite gear and put together your own kind of small survival kit. I think it would be really great to see what you put together
"I've never owned an esee knife before" 😂 hope you enjoy it. I never used or had one before myself. now my esee 5 is my favorite survival knife. And I got this esee tin kit as well. Combined both are the core of my survival kit... esee survival gear is top quality and I've never regretted buying them. Great content thanks for sharing cheers as they say there in uk
Green light may be for another purpose. Green LED is more energy efficient than a white one and starts glowing at a lower voltage too also, human eye is more sensitive to green than any other colors so less light is required to see properly. This means that a green flashlight can probably last 3-4 times longer than a similar white flashlight while doing the same job (which is great if you consider that you have only a small battery available).
Sittin in my new tiny cabin, eatin sausages for dinner!!😂 Watching TA outdoors new video!🎉 I got a USB led strip light hooked up to a Milwaukee M12 5.0ah battery!🔋 Works great with the remote, dimmer and 4 colors to choose from. I like chilling at night with the green lights on! Easy on the eyes and quite relaxing! 🎉 Love my new little cabin in the woods, out on the corner of our property. Just tucked away enough in the woods where its peaceful and relaxing! 😎 So far the only wildlife ive seen is rabbits, chips, and squirrels!😂😂 It will be my 3rd night out in the woods, i think i just might stay out here for a while!😂😂 Got a spot to mount the phone and speaker, got a lil buddy heater, led lights and lanterns, plenty of flashlights! Now i just sit and think of how i can improve my situation!! 😂 Survival is just a game at this point!! I want to test out all my gear and see what works for me and what doesnt! Ordered a Kukri blade from amazon, thatll be awesome in processing all the firewood, big and small! 🔥 So far everything is all well, little cramped at times, but im making shelving for all the odd crap laying around!😂 Need a better sleeping pad!😂 Figure out where im gonna put a permanent stove would be nice!! 👍 Get working on sealing the roof better, its a little drafty when the wind picks up!!😂😂 Anyways, cool video and ill be watching all your future videos from my tiny cabin in the woods!🎉 🪓 With the green lights on no doubt!! 💚 😂
Interestingly, for anyone thinking of snagging themselves some of those Whirl-Pak water bags, good luck. They are pretty much only available at a wholesale level in bulk quantities because the primary buyer is the medical industry.
That ESSE blade would make a nice skinning and prep knife if razor sharp, personally i'm not a fan of gimmicky survival kits but this review has changed my mind this looks like a very handy kit to have so much so I've ordered it for myself.
Hi Mike, There's a Survival kit that you didn't test yet that I think, in my opinion , it is the best in Gear and in Price: the "SOL Scout Survival Kit". It carries only Life-Saving Gears -No Frills and no useless items. Something to look into for the next video. All my outdoor packs has one even my belt pouch. Thanks
I really really love your channel. I was wondering if you could explore and do a video or even a series of videos where you build a totally stealth shelter in woodland but also do it where you are in need of gathering materials and constructing it in an inconspicuous way... stealth shelter and stealth build as if you have enermy troops close by. Thanks in advance Please keep making fantastic videos You work and sound great too which adds to the viewability
We meet again, people who watch this channel, Bear Grills, and Primitive Technology... and picture ourselves out in the woods as survivors/SAS, all whilst in the confines of our warm, centrally-heated homes.
hi Mike really enjoying the suvival kit series ...however more humour is needed. We've seen humour from U at least twice now & U really are a funny bloke. This last episode concerning the green light from the torch, now that was fun. Also when U did the various shelter uses with the tarp set ups..."now pay attention people" had me giggling out loud.....need more of the real U mate 😅😅😅😅
Honestly, this looks like an almost perfect tin to give to someone who has maybe done a weekend bushcraft course for use in emergencies. It requires a little bit of knowledge that I don't know if it's included on the various cards (for example, fishing without a rod, and setting up shelter), but with a small amount of knowledge you could probably keep a small family alive (if not too comfortable) for a decent amount of time with this. An expert could create their own kit that's just as good for less money overall, but that's not really the intended target of a tin like this.
I have a photon but have stopped using it, because you need the skills of a jeweller to change the batteries. And the button never works properly again. I much prefer cooking on an open fire, which is easier to feed and to cook with. The Esee kit is over priced because of the two knives. An ex army mess tin with a cheaper knife would be a better option. Good video. I will watch more. Well done.
if i remember correctly is that: its not how bright a light is that can trouble your night sight or get spotted but it is the color spectrum and i think the red is the best one to preserve night sight and harder to get spotted :D Great kitt :D Nice stove you have too. i have the smal bcb stove type with firedragon(i think its called) to fire it up its sort of alcohol gel type so it can even be used for cleanign wounds too hehe and i have bcb survival kit with me always, bcb suvival kit is smal but its great for the price :D but your kit there did looks really good and if/when the cleaning tabs goes out of date you can buy new ones and put it in same bottle :D
All the little books and descriptions are definitely a nice touch, although some might need a pair of glasses with them as well. The fontsize seems tiny. Also, I'd lose half of the cards if they're not packed together probably. A booklet (like the one where they're attacked together like a swivel) would seem better imo.
Love the series on the survival kits. The £200 kit was very good, but do you think you could make your own survival kit using similar items at a lower cost? Perhaps you could make your own TA outdoors survival kit.
I LIKE this series but I am also looking forward to the mix of subjects you have in store. With this kit, you ARE talking serious money. We could 'grab and go' with this but we probably have even better stuff in a drawer or closet. Maybe this is for the family that suddenly hears bad times are coming and unexpectedly needs to head for field and stream.
They could have put a 6/6 ultra light tarp in there, would have been boss. The swiss army knife is like 65$ here. Good value and resuasable Keep this series going, And I can't wait 4 the building series you're working on. I greatly enjoy the midevil or viking buildings you have done. Cheers and best 2 u and ur's
I don't know about the knife, but the sak is most popular and cheap, the items may be quality but most things are few pound items. I have that survival handbook, both the one that came out in the early 1990's (with the blue cover and the revised version from just a decade ago with the cammo cover.
@@marcusfridh8489 I have the yellow one from about 1993 . I also brought the mini camp one for my daughter when she was a cadet about 10 years ago
You should make a video where you make your own survival tin and see how the prices and quality compare to an all in one!
Not sure about the snare wire as i fit brass eyes to let the snare slide as find plain wire can bend and snag instead of tightening
And weirdly it dosn't have a wire saw , not super good but they are useful , especially for cutting a fishing pole etc .
( where a longer bladed knife lets you batton off the side branches without hitting your hand with the batton )
At £200 i would have expected a manual chainsaw style instead of the wire saw but there's neither ?.
Great kit great video thanks for showing us so we know what is the better of them all.
thanks for the content, makes life peaceful
greetings from Ukraine
Greetings from Texas! Enjoy the kit reviews!
Fantastic video in a brilliant series, enjoyed every minute.
Thanks again Mike for another great video 😊 Greetings from Canada!
What would you add? First aid? Sewing kit? Emergency poncho/tarp?
As well as less harsh on your eyes, the green light helps with reading maps too I think. If you use red light you can’t see the all the lines
Miss mcq great kit looks well done most of the cosst was used up in the 2 knives
Thanks was waiting to see this ESEE kit put to good use!!!
Beautiful Woodlands
Maybe you've already made a video like this, but I'd love to see you take some of your favorite gear and put together your own kind of small survival kit. I think it would be really great to see what you put together
"I've never owned an esee knife before" 😂 hope you enjoy it. I never used or had one before myself. now my esee 5 is my favorite survival knife. And I got this esee tin kit as well. Combined both are the core of my survival kit... esee survival gear is top quality and I've never regretted buying them. Great content thanks for sharing cheers as they say there in uk
I miss MCQ Bushcraft, but last I heard, he's off being a happy family man now. Good on him.
Yeah, I used to watch him quite a bit. Good uploads and he clearly knew his stuff.
Anyway, if he's doing well and he is happy, then good luck to him!
Green light may be for another purpose.
Green LED is more energy efficient than a white one and starts glowing at a lower voltage too
also, human eye is more sensitive to green than any other colors so less light is required to see properly.
This means that a green flashlight can probably last 3-4 times longer than a similar white flashlight while doing the same job (which is great if you consider that you have only a small battery available).
Sittin in my new tiny cabin, eatin sausages for dinner!!😂
Watching TA outdoors new video!🎉
I got a USB led strip light hooked up to a Milwaukee M12 5.0ah battery!🔋
Works great with the remote, dimmer and 4 colors to choose from.
I like chilling at night with the green lights on! Easy on the eyes and quite relaxing! 🎉
Love my new little cabin in the woods, out on the corner of our property. Just tucked away enough in the woods where its peaceful and relaxing! 😎 So far the only wildlife ive seen is rabbits, chips, and squirrels!😂😂
It will be my 3rd night out in the woods, i think i just might stay out here for a while!😂😂
Got a spot to mount the phone and speaker, got a lil buddy heater, led lights and lanterns, plenty of flashlights!
Now i just sit and think of how i can improve my situation!!
😂
Survival is just a game at this point!! I want to test out all my gear and see what works for me and what doesnt!
Ordered a Kukri blade from amazon, thatll be awesome in processing all the firewood, big and small! 🔥
So far everything is all well, little cramped at times, but im making shelving for all the odd crap laying around!😂
Need a better sleeping pad!😂
Figure out where im gonna put a permanent stove would be nice!! 👍 Get working on sealing the roof better, its a little drafty when the wind picks up!!😂😂
Anyways, cool video and ill be watching all your future videos from my tiny cabin in the woods!🎉 🪓
With the green lights on no doubt!!
That is really a great kit. Best so far.
Thanks in advance
Please keep making fantastic videos
You work and sound great too which adds to the viewability
We meet again, men of culture.
Incorrect meme deployment.
We meet again, people who watch this channel, Bear Grills, and Primitive Technology... and picture ourselves out in the woods as survivors/SAS, all whilst in the confines of our warm, centrally-heated homes.
And women 😢..

nice vid, thank you, keep em coming mate, Cheers
The ESSE RB3 is my fav bush knife, excellent 3" with great handle.
hi Mike really enjoying the suvival kit series ...however more humour is needed.
Thank you for doing this, I'm going to make one myself to put in my emergency pack !
I wish I could go experience it with my friend. Wish you good health
❤❤❤
The knives alone are easily half the cost if not more. Seems to be overall an excellent kit!
Esee makes real quality products. I have three of their knives. The kit looks like it covers a lot of survival needs, but pricey. Thanks 🎸🔪
Very good videos, thanks for sharing.
Nice kit, great video, keep up the good work, be safe of coarse, have a little fun too !!
have a great day
The Swiss Army knife part was the best. I didn’t know my knife has a wire stripper notch in until tonight. 🤗
Love the series on the survival kits. The £200 kit was very good, but do you think you could make your own survival kit using similar items at a lower cost? Perhaps you could make your own TA outdoors survival kit.
Great video Mike thanks for sharing. The use of a mess tin is however not new and is mentioned in the SAS survival handbook by John Lofty Wiseman.
Thanks Mike!
great video as always!
All that is missing is a Mylar blanket, isn´t it. Would really finish the deal for me! Or was I missing something?
They could have put a 6/6 ultra light tarp in there, would have been boss. The swiss army knife is like 65$ here. Good value and resuasable
Keep this series going, And I can't wait 4 the building series you're working on. I greatly enjoy the midevil or viking buildings you have done. Cheers and best 2 u and ur's
The Esee 4 is a fantastic knife. I am waiting for one of these kits to come from 5col survival from the USA.
I don't know about the knife, but the sak is most popular and cheap, the items may be quality but most things are few pound items. But there is so much missing also you should make your own survival kits to suit your needs as everyone and areas are different and it's simply satisfying to do your own. I think apart from knife I could make rest for less than £60, just my thoughts love your channel... BatW
Also is the knife legal in UK.. Being a fixed blade with sharp point looks like the kind they are cracking down on✌️
illegal* Unfortunate typo.
@@badgerandthewoodsman Being less than 3", it's quite legal.
@@markyoungman148 I just checked and it has to be a folding knife no bigger than 3", they are cracking down on rapid deployment knives and fixed blade is one of them, that said if your in a remote place, they might overlook it but idk, ✌️
@@badgerandthewoodsmanDon’t forget, they are illegal “unless you have a good reason”. Being sealed in a survival kit while you’re in, going to or returning from the wilderness seems to be a good reason to me.
