I'm Italian and I'm actually from Tuscany and it is great to see Inga try making panzanella! These are some tips for sticking more to the original recipe. First of all it should be an old bread (pane raffermo) because this recipe is meant to save it from being thrown away. Then you have to soak it in the water, otherwise you are making a salad with bread not panzanella. The dressing should be easier, just olive oil, salt and (balsamic or not) vinegar. I usually make this in the summer because it is really fresh and easy to make! It is meant to be a main dish and not a side dish. The original ingredients are tomatoes, onions, basil and cucumbers but you can add whatever you want to make it more rich, like canned tuna ☺️💛

Doing the French Toast thing with Baguette is actually something i have seen in Germany a few times. Is a dish that uses up stale white bread, soaking it in an egg and milk mixture, fried in a pan and seved with applesauce and cinnamon sugar. It´s called Armer Ritter, translating to poor knight.

    • @SolarLiner

That is, at least as much as the legend goes, the origins of French Toast. Stale baguettes that have become hard can be saved by re-humidifying it. In fact, in French it's called "Pain Perdu", which translates to "lost bread".

Baguettes are definitely the correct way to do French toast. Softer breads end up dissolving way to easily in the egg, but the egg softens the crust for baguettes.

Actually in France we call french toasts "pain perdu" (litteraly "lost bread"), because we use leftover, hardened bread for it, so baguette is kinda usual to make it here, and we have the same kind of texture you have, more on the cripsy side sometimes, due to the leftover bread

Remember, your baguette is not stale. you just need to reheat it with a glass of water. Also, there's no shame on eating your baguette in one sitting without cutting them.

love your video and passion for bread.
French toast is one of my most cherished childhood memories. in France we called it "pain perdu" which means "lost bread". (it is usually made with ancient bread pieces that can't be eaten as they are too hard) My grandmother had the simplest recipe with only egg soaking, then in a pan with butter, and finally sugar when it's off the pan. growing up I decided to put the sugar during the pan frying so the bread it gets coated in butter caramel. it melts my heart each time.

Actually, in my country (Morocco) we use leftover baguette to make French toast because we always have a lot of stale baguette. My mom would use the "tradition" baguette to make french toast on a sunday morning and it's always so good cause the bread, as you said, is sturdier and has more chew preventing it from over-soaking.

I loove these recipes!! Probably the only thing I wouldn't do is the mustard in the salad dressing. That kind of flavor doesn't really work with the rest of the ingredients imo- but obviously that's just my personal taste, haha.
Making "french toast" (Arme Ritter) here in Germany is actually done with any kind of stale bread you have, because it's a recipe invented to save the bread from being thrown away. The bread is soaked in a milk/egg/sugar/cinnamon mixture, which gives it back moisture, but usually it still retains some bite to it.

A bit late to the party, but if anybody is into bread, there is a spanish desert called "torrija", is usually eaten in easter (semana santa is how the holiday is called over here), and basically is fried stale bread with milk, cinnamon and some syrup. I'm sure there should be a recipe somewhere online, and it's really one of my favourite treats, even when I follow tradition and only eat a couple of them during "their season".
