Awesome review! I’m looking into a Garmin mainly because it’s solar and I’d like to track top speed while foiling. I’m curious how different wings react. I’d expect to hit 30mph on a good day on a fast wing.
This has got to be the ONLY review I’ve seen if this watch that actually involves someone surfing with it. It seems like there’s some issues with GPS staying connected and it correctly counting waves. I’ve been interested in these for a long time but it doesn’t seem like they live up to the expectations. I’m mainly interested in distance travelled, heart rate and speed. My goal was to see how much difference there is with different waves and hydrofoil setups in terms of speed.
Thank you for this video. I'm disappointed the surfing app in the Garmin dedicated surf watch wasn't able to record the waves properly. I'm so against the apple watch, since its a terrible looking watch and I don't like the smart features. I like the Garmin and in particular the Forerunner 955 and Fenix 7s both in solar. As they have full functionality to log your sporting sessions and record data about your body, I tried Whoop, which was great data, and I could really train specifically and never overtrain that could lead to injuries. But Whoop is based on a subscription model, and you pay a hefty monthly fee.. But if the app doesn't work properly after all those years, because many people have been complaining about the surf app for years. The Apple watch does this the best, unfortunately for me.
Hopefully they fixed the watch with some new algorithm update for better wave catch accuracy. TBD as I have one coming. I don’t have a rip curl or anything else to compare it to, but looking forward to trying it out.
I only bought mine a few days ago, but it seems they've done a great deal of working on the subject since this video was published a year ago. When setting up my watch I had the choice of keeping the GPS connected under water (when swimming, surfing etc.) or not. Choosing the GPS to stay connected I got the info this will use more battery, which is obvious and I can happily live with it. Haven't had the chance to test it myself yet but heard from others that it would be working reliable.
Which one do you prefer more or any other brands that you like? I surf, kayak, swim and hike. I like that the garmin has all those different features but it failed so much! Do you have any other surf watches you love?
Just for surfing the Rip Curl is better, for all other sports including swimming, kayaking, running etc, Garmin is better and connect to phone. There is currently an Apple watch that is the equivalent and competitor of these two.
I had have a Ripcurl search GPS 2. This mist be the most disappointing purchase ever! The watch will only pair with an Apple phone which means with Android you do not get updated surf reports. Second the watch I purchased has already been replaced twice under warranty and I am on my third one which has also just failed. My watches all fogged. With the last unit have been so careful with it not even wearing it in the shower. Finally if you want a new strap the unit has to go back to the service centre and that took 6 weeks. On the positive side When it worked I loved the watch. Easy to read clear simply and uploading your session and looking at your rides on screen enriches your surfing experience.
For surfing i prefer ripcurl 2 more accurate and more fun to use it. Even only suit connect apple only, thats fine. The most point is never press button inside water
In fact, how many waves did you catch? Which device gave you the most correct number? As you record the session, it will be nice to compare the video with the data from the watchers.
I had both, the Garmin is rubbish, if it cant connect to satilite then you lose tide aswell, so pay allot of money for just the time, plus if it does work it will say you caught 3 waves when you caught over 20. The ripcurl was not 100% acurate but performed more reliably.
@@ruimalaquias1579 Oh how much you evolve by analyzing it? Are you a champion of something or you just go to the water and in middle of the wave you start to watch your clock?

@carzo parazzo I agree with you. On behalf of the companies that manufacture apple watch, Garmin, and the rest of the prominent industries in heathcare and sports recreation, we apologize for all the dumb tools that were ever made to know what human bodies are doing.
This is what I call a proper review. Not just reading the features but actually using the watch on the water. Thank you!

The written part and especially the last part on the computers was super helpful. Mahalo!
I'm trying to figure out do these watches measure how many paddles or how far you paddle ?
Awesome review!

thanks, great review, have you tried Amazfit T rex pro?, has GPS and surfing profile but haven't found reviews about it for surfing.

I boughg ripcurl gps 2 . Got 50 % discount this year 2023. So worthed and nice to be used surfing. Quick charging and quite accurate for surfing data.
Baita conteudo brother parabens

Why?
Would be great to see if the instinct 2 does better, 22 failures it’s far to much…
Well I think tha Garmin has great potencial as long as they solve the problem with the gps.

I wonder what you do later with all that data? I mean why you need all that info lol

Surely to stay on the couch eating McDonald's and watching Netflix, you don't need a watch like this.
