The writings on the 1st record you bought says "Yekatit" (yekateet) which means February . And name of the instrument on Asnakech worku's album is kirar. I think you're really awesome for exposing your kids to cool music like this and if you're in to Ethiopian music you should check out Henock's practice room he's an amazing Ethiopian bassist .
@@dbodine328 yes it is September ,which is the 1st month of the year for Ethiopian calender and usually is common to name girls who are born on Meskerem, Meskerem.
Greetings to you as well. I loved my time in Addis Ababa. Who are some of your favorite Ethiopian artists and recordings? I don't have a cassette player but am always looking for records.
I've got Tche Belew and a bunch of Mulatu Astatke on vinyl, I love it too. I'd recommend the Nigeria 70 "The Definitive Story Of 1970's Funky Lagos" or Pasteur Lappe too.
Respect for adopting. Respect for honoring your daughters' native culture. I dig the musical vibes. There's a Ethiopian restaurant in Asheville, NC. Last time Veronica and I were in town we wanted to go, but their hours didn't work with our trip. To answer your question at the end, plus an Ethiopian tie-in, one thing I listen to that I think is overlooked is one of the recent Blue Note reissues. Amongst all the 80th Anniversary and Tone Poets being discussed and showcased the one that is grossly absent is Donald Byrd's Ethiopian Knights. Stellar album.
Hi Daren, sounds like your following the lead of my channel, butcher names and no expert lol. What a great topic and some outstanding records. Totally agree why you are enjoying this music. I use to have that Afro-Latin soul album, I really liked that one. There was such great music coming out of Africa as the merged so many styles together. What a great showing of albums and enjoyed the needle drops. This is hard stuff to talk about but you did outstanding. Steve
Very cool showcase and personal story. I only have that first Mulatu record you showed. Most of the others are new to me. Ive been addicted to the Analog Africa label. Picking up almost every of their releases Via Bandcamp. Nice. ✌🏻
I love the Awesome Tapes from Africa record label, amazing sounds from all over the eastern part of Africa. Another good record label to look into is Analog Africa. I recently purchased a somalin disco compilation from them, and was very impressed with the music that they could find. also I love this short dive into ethio jazz music and hope you make more!

Darren, what an excellent video. Nice executed introduction to Ethiopian Jazz. Learned a lot here, thank you. I really admire your family’s calling and adoption story. My wife and I will adopt when our son is older. It was one of the things we talked about before we got married. Will reach out to you then for mentorship. I only have one Ethiopian Jazz Record and digitally have the Rough Guide to Ethiopian Jazz. Thanks for the shoutout brother. I’m humbled. Hope all is well with you and your family. God bless
SOrry for the late response. I have found some locally as one of my record stores carries tons of world music. Many of these titles can be bought from many online recored retailers as well. You just have to search and you should be able to find many of these.

Sam A, hey thanks for helping me out with some the translations. My daughters name is Meskerem, which I believe means September?
Or is it new year?
