True story: Madlib and OhNo used to be my next door neighbor in Oxnard when I was young. I used to go to their house and play video games with OhNo. I had no idea that they made music until I was in high school when Lootpack came out with an album. Crazy because Madlib is my favorite producer ever!! And his rapping ain’t too bad too.
@10:21 made me tear up to see Ayaléw Mesfin finally free to do what he loves MUSIC... & madlib without even knowing the same language was there to understand it all. Thanks Noisey for putting this short video out & inspiring others.
I’ll never forget about being at that show. It was profound. So incredible to see him open up the way he did. And Madlib’s show afterwards was amazing. Did the whole show on an iPad. How f*cking cool. The one and only Mos Def showed up, too.
This video just blew my mind, I was at that show I feel very lucky to have witnessed all that. Also Mos Def came out that night with madlib. I'm glad this was posted to learn more about that show.
Incredible. To see how moved Mr. Mesfin was onstage and then for him to still be so good! And that he preserved all that music, and now Madlib can use it. Amazing for everyone involved. This is the way to approach sampling and reissuing music, by the best in the game.
Deeply moved by Ayaléw Mesfin's words. His difficult life left him with truth and integrity. Simplicity and absolutely no arrogance can be found within him. Thanks Ayaléw.
at 10:29 I'm crying yo. This world is crazy. This man, hasn't performed in decades, and now he gets a reception like this. But the weight on his heart must be so heavy. wow
He is our legend that deserve more which he didn't and it heart me to see him the way his life is going we Thank you for all the good memories Ayuya we love you and wishing you a long life. And Thank you to you guys too.
Absolutely dope. Madlib is a Universal Descendant Vessel, as we all are... just have to connect and vibrate. Egon is a Visionary with positive ripples, as we all are... just have to accept and project. Transcendents. Thank you for this blessing. Love...
Madlib opened so much for me musically and emotionally with his breadth of samples from different eras. He really goes deep and brings them back to life again in his own way. It's so sad what ayalew went through as an artist and human being and the corruption ethiopians go through still today. Ethiopian creativity comes so much from their struggles, they are such colorful people love them
I came here because I had a suspicion that madlibs beats have hints of ethiopian music. I was correct and happy as an Ethiopian myself. love your stuff!
That level of appreciation of life, that's a fucking artist dude. It's hard to be that raw in your music, to be that true to yourself and your experience. I'm so glad I saw this.
One of the most incredible videos I've ever seen. Despite the language barrier, you can see both of them on the same wavelength. Watching him on stage towards the end was heartwarming
yooo, Ayalew Mesfin is a real one for dealing with that kind of condemning just because his music was uplifting to the people of Ethiopia. the fact that he still to this day stands for what he believes, it fucking inspires me. Also, its really dope to see Madlib geeked over this legend. im geeked over Madlib myself. Him and Kankick are like my number one inspirations when i started doing music 10 years ago. I hope to one day meet them. hopefully this music I do takes me there someday. Jah bless to you & yours Ayalew! also Jah bless to Madlib, Egon & Noisey!
love love love videos like this. it pains me to see that in this day and age we have almost all recorded music at our fingertips and people still choose to listen to the same handful of artists or watered down manufactured crap. somehow internet/streaming etc had the opposite effect and people got lazier and less curious and just want to be told what to like
Madlib is a legend and the most slept on producer ever!! Lootpack Quasimoto still play the shit out of those albums. And Stone throw is one of best underground labels ever, Peanut Butter Wolf My Vinyl Weighs a Ton is a classic
This is what music is all about. It always been spiritual. When you have that feeling and you express it thru music it becomes magic. Keep diggin in the crates and you will always find a tale that has not been told.
This is awesome! I love learning more about samples already so it was cool to see major artists encouraging it. You really find a lot good music that you've never would have heard unless you researched the samples.
GOOD STUFF MAN!!!!!!! For people that knock sampling it helps bring back forgotten or people never heard of musicians and opens up a brand new world to people. Peace!!!!
Like litteraly can't even compare madlibs style with any producer out there, it's uniquely interesting that's what I would call it keeps me engaged in its rare ways

Unity is a fundamental of Hip Hop. If the music isn't bringing people together and bridging gaps it isn't Hip Hop. So thankful for this piece! Thanks!
