    I’ve always had bigger rigs, especially love my XMaxx. But can’t play them with my little boy, so I started looking into smaller scale RCs. I got the HBX & MJX ones, but I’m so glad that Arrma came up with their own. It’s about time! I just ordered one!

Ordered the servo mount last night and picked up a few spare parts at my LHS I should have checked for a diff. Heard a rumor that the upgrades will start becoming available mid November. Best honest review. ( + very relevant HBX 16889 pro comparison )
    Arrma's drivetrain is far from being bulletproof : metal pin screwed in the plastic wheel axles should wear very fast. Same with the plastic tiny gears inside the diffs , and again plastic diff cups...
    It holds well during most reviews , but after more packs , Arrma designed the drivetrain so you will have to pay again for metal wheel axles + upgraded diffs with metal cups (of course you cant buy diff cups only...) either hop up costs 50 bucks each ... and still no brushless... (brushed stock its boring SLOW , and motor gets super hot) This tiny truck becomes VERY expensive for its poor perfomance .
    1/18 is just too small outside (and too big inside.)
    Nice but that 's all , truly speaking. 😉

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC  10 місяців тому +1

      I'm not sure how many packs you have through yours yet but I've got quite a few through mine and other than that one output cup I haven't broken anything. And that's on brushless power which is probably 50% more than it was meant to have with the stock system. I really do think this is a very durable setup And it's actually been stronger than I expected it to be.

    • @1peanut
      @1peanut 8 місяців тому +1

      Maybe its your driving mate. Even large highly upgraded RCs it is best not to land on throttle and such. Driving style can make or break anything. My grom has held up far beyond expectation. I am very impressed with this little truck.

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC  8 місяців тому +1

      @1peanut Yeah I'd have to disagree with the original comment. I've got a lot of packs through my truck before upgrading the differentials and as long as you're reasonable with bashing it the plastic parts really do hold up well.

      @Madprax 8 місяців тому +1

      @@DoRCthat s why my 2 last comments have been deleted... because everybody know Hbx 16889 PRO is much better bang for the bucks... and Arrma Grom is just overpriced crap with poor stock performance... 😉😘

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC  8 місяців тому +2

      @@Madprax what do you mean by canceled? I haven't deleted any comments from anyone.
      I really think it just depends on what you're looking for The HBX is a fun truck but it's also cheaply made, hard to work on and has so much slop in everything that over maybe 20 miles an hour becomes pretty hard to control. Don't get me wrong. It's a fun little car but it definitely has its downsides.
      The Grom is more expensive but it's also a better designed and better put together vehicle.
      I don't think either one of them are bad per se I just think that they will likely appeal to different demographics.

Some of that bashing was on a very small beach at a campground right next to other families. They didn't even give me a second glance other than the kids thinking it was cool. If I had a 1/10 scale or especially a 1/8 scale vehicle out there Not only would they probably be giving me bad looks but I'd also be concerned about hitting one of them and hurting them. For that price imo it's better to get the hbx competition. Getting parts isnt that bad but ofcourse, results may vary. However what the grom does have that makes me wish I got one is the battery tray.
    Not surprising the rear diff went. That's usually what breaks first among all of these minis as soon as you swap to brushless
    Excellent video as always brother (put bigger wheels on it 😅)

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC  10 місяців тому +3

      Yeah as soon as I'm able to get the upgraded differential for it I will be putting bigger tires on it for sure. I'm also not surprised that The rear differential went but I am surprised about how long it took. This thing took a lot of abuse and I finally was able to kill it when I was actually trying to kill it so can't really blame it for that. I think especially with the stock system the drivetrain in this thing would hold up pretty much indefinitely.

  • @andyroo8uk685

    130uk pound the groms are and for that price you can get more but not quality ...and i brought a remo1631 pro like 4 years ago all metal ...6 screws to get the diff not 10 ;) ...i just cant justify paying 130uk pound on it when like a mew4 is 60uk pound brushelss all metal gears oil shocks

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC  9 місяців тому +1

      I'd have to see that 1631. I looked at a picture of it and can't really see how it would get you to the differential it only six screws. It looks like it's the standard design where the middle top plate has to come off, then the shock tower than the housing above the differential.
      That being said there are definitely other options out there than the grum but in my experience none as high quality.

      @@DoRC my Merv has a lot of upgrades, it makes it faster than the HBX, MJX, etc. The issue is that you have to do upgrades just to cover the flaws, such as shim the differential to keep it from breaking. MJX had issues with the differential on some of the models, but the newer ones have better differentials. Meanwhile Traxxas just keeps making the same flaws where you actually have to buy the parts to upgrade it. The Merv is better when you dump money in it, but it is weak and sucks right out of the box. Lately, I have been using the Hyper Go H14BM and I love it. The Merv is not a real basher so it shouldn't be compared to the Grom or Hyper Go anyway. I'll be honest. I was all set to get one of these. For its size, it's perfect for me to take on OTR (ie. over the road) jobs. Unfortunately, in doing further research, or appears that all...and, when I say 'all', I mean ALL...of the upgrade parts mentioned by you, and others, have been "pulled" from The Arrma & Horizon Hobby websites. What's up with that? As others have said, until/unless those upgrade parts are back to being listed, I'm NOT buying...and, I have a strong feeling a LOT of others also won't be purchasing these.

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC  10 місяців тому +3

      I don't think that they were pulled from the sites I think they were accidentally listed to begin with and were never meant to be listed yet. I talked to Horizon about my order and they told me that none of the upgrade parts are actually in yet which is why they aren't listed. I don't think that's indicative of a problem just a mistake someone made initially

      @@DoRClooking at it from one perspective, I could agree, it is possible that said upgrade parts were 'accidentally' listed early. However, looking at it from a different perspective, most manufacturers are known to list such things early, and then either list them as "coming soon", or "pre-order".

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC  10 місяців тому +1

      @ninthislandrc Yeah maybe so. A few of the parts are still listed on the Arma site but others aren't. I still have all the parts pre-order that were listed and it hasn't been canceled so I guess we'll see. I don't think it would be in their best interest to not have the upgrade parts as I'm expecting that those parts will all be in an EXB version eventually but time will tell.

      Shortage of parts is always an issue with new cars. Happened with my Kraton 4S after it was released, couldn't get anything for months.

      @DoRC  10 місяців тому

      @GeddyRC Yeah it was worse during the COVID shortages but has actually gotten quite a bit better. Normal spare parts are available now and the upgrades should be available soon. I'm not worried about it :-) Thanks for watching!

    MJX hyper go is better imho, cheaper, brushless out of the box, and it has full metal differentials...Grom has plastic gears inside diff....Don't get me wrong i love Arrma but Granite Grom is overrated.

      I agree that there are better out of the box values but the grom definitely does have some advantages

      The MJX hyper go is awful! It had a TON of slop in the steering, it’s a pain in the ass to work on, it’s got ten different size screws, it takes weeks to get parts from China, etc…

      2mm screws are a plus over most others.

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC  10 місяців тому +1

      Yeah and it's not just a screw size. There are only two different types of screws in the entire platform excluding things like the upper shock mounts and motor mounting screws. You also don't have to rip 3/4 of the car apart just get a differential out.

      @@DoRC i know, its very well made. And sometimes plastic to plastic wears less than metal to metal. And i know im gonna get shit for saying that but its true.
