I have such a soft spot for Smashing Pumpkins. Back when I was in 7th grade, they were the first concert I went to. My friend Sandy McSorley's older brother worked for the company who set up the shows for the band. We got backstage passes at Michigan State University. They had images from Planet of the Apes on them (super badass, right?). Now, the stage is U-shaped, and this essentially meant we spent the entire concert, standing on huge equipment boxes off to the side of the stage, rocking out. During the break, Billy handed guitar strings and picks to an assistant, who came over and gave them to us (blue and orange guitar picks, with the band's heart with the S and P inside logo on them) and waved to us. I remember that moment to this day. No other concert will ever compare.
I love it how he claims no one has ever tried to talk to him about "it" then immediately says fans tried to Q&A him but he refused. So it's not that no one's asked. It's that he won't speak about it.
Both bands are timeless. Their music was so original and their lives so messed up. Mirror images of each other really. One band member died, flamed out fast, iconic.
Joe is literally interviewing Courtney Loves Ex boyfriend about the suicide of her husband. There are rumors she even cheated on Cobain with Corgen. Joe should of probably looked into that lol
I saw Smashing Pumpkins when Gish (hands down their greatest achievement, and one of the finest debut albums ever by any band) had come out; they played a little club in New Haven CT (not Toad's Place) and there wasn't even a stage...we stood eye level right in front of Billy Corgan and co. on a Sunday night...they played like the rockstars they would become...with very few people in the place. Was an unforgettable experience.
nah, I disagree that Gish is their greatest achievement, though it is one hell of a debut. Even Billy has been on record saying his lyrics on that album were subpar in comparison to albums like Siamese, Mellon Collie, and even some of the stuff on Adore. It's a great album, no doubt, but I believe albums like Siamese and Mellon Collie are far stronger lyrically and musically
Why didn't Joe ask, "So, you were around that whole scene with Kurt just before he died. What did you see?" Because despite Billy begging the question more than once, Joe knew the answer was going to be, "Oh...I don't really want to talk about it."
@@bridgelaurie9490 he clearly is a bit envious but on the other hand he's said on more than one occasion that Kurt is one of the greatest songwriters of his generation so he's not a complete dick about it
This is one of the best "music industry" interviews on the web. Corgan drops a lot of knowledge. Too bad the whole thing is no longer available on UA-cam.
Man, the 90s music scene was the last of rock and metal being at the top. The music and that decade was so good and had a completely different vibe, but looking back it was all so fleeting.......... And ended sad and destructive.
Yup. It's dramatic of course like everything but it's based off actual recordings and Tom was there. Wonder what Dylan saw up at the greenhouse, maybe he seen Kurt? As when Tom went to see Dylan at the house, Courtney had him all coked up so he couldn't speak.
Dude, those reenactments in “Soaked In Bleach” WERE based on audio recordings and actual events that Tom Grant was apart of and/or present for. Just saying. That’s why it’s not illegal.

Saw pumpkins in fl about a month ago and they're just as good now. I'm so glad they got to a place where they figured their shit out, put it aside, embraced, and or squashed it and decided to get back together. It's amazing to me(as an audio engjneer and just general music lover) that a band I used to go see a few decades ago has a sound at times that is fresher than majority of what is being put out there now. Their come back timing is perfect.
I saw them about 5 years ago in Austin at the music hall. Best show I've ever been to. I ended up finding an HD recording from the show on youtube and extracted the audio, split it into tracks and made it into an album with the poster art for the album cover. It's one of my favorites to listen to still.
Wasn't Soaked in Bleach done entirely from the perspective of the private investigator who was in every scene with dialogue? Which would mean that he would have actual recollection of what was said?
Actually looking into it further, it was done from the perspective of Detective Tom Grant which included recorded conversations he had during that time.
I know the scenes were recreated but I don't think it was to a point were it was out of context . We all know Kurt was in a bad spot and was out of his mind at the time . I think someone was in the loft with him trying to talk him out of it but Kurt did it . The way Krist and Dave talk about those time , Kurt's suicide was not a totally surprise
Same thing I said. He's not putting words into anyone's mouths that weren't there at the time. Every thing I remember in the movie he was involved in and present at the time. He also didn't seem to be seeking fame with it he just wants the truth out there
Could be but I have no clue. I haven't seen Soaked in Bleach in a long time but I do know they had recreations, did the one Courtney make have recreations?
Grew up on 70's and late 60's music. Then the 80's came and with a few exceptions, i felt it was the end of great raw band sounds. Then the 90's came and it finally returned, picking up where the 70's left off and adding something new and fresh. Aside from the often weird dark depressive lyrics and attitudes, it was a fantastic decade for rock and roll. And since the early 2000's, with a few exceptions, we're back in that crappy place of no original raw rock band sound. Only it's worse than that, cause hardly anyone plays an instrument anymore. Makes me appreciate that much more all the great bands i got to experience in their beginning. The days of so many great bands and albums, you just don't have the time to catch everything out there. Unfortunately, I'm now caught up and wishing i could start it all over. It's all machines now. Soon even a machine will be making comments for me.

That is not even mentioning all the great obscure old heavy raw rock bands just coming out last few years, a million exclent obscure 70s bands waiting to be rediscovered few have heard. There has never been a better time for access to more music similar to what you like than now. Except its not mainstream. U gotta go look for it. But its out there. Its not gonna come to you. They played Axis together and then went over to Bill's Bar. It was like two weeks after "Smells Like Teen Spirit" came out and the night before Nevermind hit retail stores.
That was when Kurt met Mary Lou Lord and they started up their little things before he got together with Courtney in England a couple months later. Nirvana and Pumpkins played Twister with a jar of Crisco on stage before the show and Novoselic pissed off a couple townies by wiping the crisco off himself with an American flag that was nearby. They had to be guarded from the the goons who wanted to kick his ass. I don't know if it's just me but every time I hear Billy use that term "Pumpkins world" I cringe. He's the worst.

Some of the recorded audio cuts out and then it’s just the actors talking. Don’t be so quick to defend Soaked in Bleach. It’s not a credible film. Can you really trust a movie about Kurt Cobain that’s narrative is “okay he talked and wrote about suicide but he was just joking around”
@@michaellawrence5387 lololol EVERY SINGLE BIT OF DIALOGUE IN SOAKED IN BLEACH IS FROM TOM GRANTS TAPES THAT HAVE BEEN AROUND THE INTERNET FOR YEARS. Do you think its more interesting to watch the conversations being reenacted or just listening to the tapes for the whole movie?
B Elston how long the recordings have been around is pretty irrelevant. It doesn’t make them “telling” of anything. If you think Kurt was murdered, you clearly didn’t listen to anything he said in his interviews.
i get that billy doesnt want to re live those memories ... but it sounds like he has a unique insight ... like shouldnt the investigators have talked to him or something? he says no one has asked him about it really and he wont talk about it anyhow. way to fuel more conspiracies, instead of trying to stop them ... as you seem to be complaining about.

Soaked in Bleach requires some context, so the average person who watched it on Netflix probably wouldn't understand all the details. That being said- whether you agree with the movie or not, if you like Nirvana or not, there's too many suspicious things surrounding Cobain's death; the case should at least be reopened.
And the fact that it was based on the many, many hours of recorded phone calls and meetings with Courtney Love, Rosemary Carroll and Dylan. Tom Grants Tapes were used throughout the entire film. So what is joe Rogan talking about when he says it was made up? Did he really watch it or what? Moron

Soaked in Bleach plays audio clips but some of the stuff said by the actors, we still don’t really know if they said it because it cuts in and out. Soaked in Bleach is not a credible documentary at all. Soaked in Bleach is pretty much just “we know nothing about the heroin tolerance of a seasoned addict, nothing about the physics of where a shotgun shell could possibly eject. Kirk or whatever his name is talked about suicide but he was clearly joking. Kirk bought a gun and went to rehab and left right away, but we’ll show a bunch of video clips of him smiling and joking and here’s a bunch of times Courtney lied let’s concentrate on how weird Courtney is”
DavEyOne SlimObi Soaked in Bleach isn’t a credible documentary buddy. Go look up how even the people in it weren’t happy about how they were represented. Cobain talked about killing himself to more than 3 journalists. He brought up killing himself with a gun several times to Michael Azerrad. You really trust a documentary that ignores that and dismisses it?
I'm not sure if Joe knows who Tom Grant is, or if he fully understands what information was used for the Soaked in Bleach film and where the info was sourced from, but he should try to have Grant on the show to talk about his taped conversations with Courtney and his role in the whole clusterfuck-turned-conspiracy.
Yeah I agree, and everybody knows Kurt stole Courtney from Corgan and he was always upset about it. He's been protecting CL from the very first day after kurts "suicide".
The Lone Ranger -- Meh. I'd like to give Corgan the benefit of the doubt that he'd pipe up if he knew or even suspected that Courtney was directly involved in Kurt's death. I've read the entirety of Tom Grant's website, as well as his "Cobain Case Study Manual", and have also read the _Love & Death_ book by Ian Halperin, and have watched the Soaked in Bleach film. I've also read several of the Nirvana bios and have been kind of obsessively absorbing all of the Nirvana-related info that I can get my paws on since 1991. I'm only putting that out there to make it clear that I'm familiar with the conspiracy claims. From everything I've read and watched, including Corgan's interview here, I think it's likely that Courtney was cheating on Cobain while she was married to him. Everett True, who was friends with both Kurt & Courtney and who wrote his own bio on Nirvana, seemed to think so, too. I suspect that's what Billy was alluding to when he said, "I was there for the before, a little bit during, and there for the after", but I could be reading too much into it. If she did cheat on Kurt with Billy, though, then Billy might simply have agreed not to go public with that info.

I'm not sure if Rogan is trying to play dumb in order to get Corgan to drop his guard, but when he says "This(Soaked In Bleach)should be illegal" I hope he realizes that it's not illegal or defamatory because the content of the film is factual. If it wasn't true Courtney would've sued Tom Grant 20 years ago but she never will because she doesn't want to be deposed.
Right, and of course they dont mention how montage of heck got this overwhelming publicity that overshadowed soaked in bleach, came out at the same time, a documentary that says, "hey, look at this drug addict before he killed himself", so actually nothing of substance just to bury the evidence for those who are already on one side of the fence or dont care to dig.

I'm sorry, there is so much I have to say. Most can't be said here. It has been weighing on my mind since I last posted. All I can say now (with no fear of reprisal any more) is that a secret love should stay secret, even when that secret is wrapped in death. Courtney was not the only one with a lover (Pumpkin boy) but Kurt knew how to keep a secret.
Soaked in bleach was based off taped conversation with Courtney love and Dylon also the fact that the police dropped the ball big time on even investigating the damn thing
Yeah but, had Billy Corgan not been in the room, Joe Rogan would've been eating up the "Kurt Cobain murder conspiracy". Jamie would've pulled something up, Joe would wax the whole "Dude, this is some creepy shit right here" etc etc. The doc wasn't made by just some guy, either; he was the private investigator hired by Courtney Love to locate Cobain during his disappearance up until his suicide/alleged murder. The film only depicted scenes which he was present for.
I still visit Pumpkin World all the time - almost daily. Don't spend much time at all in Nirvana World any more. I'm thankful that Billy (and Jimmy Chamberlin, who had quite the smack problem) stayed alive to make all that great music.
This should've been called "Billy still lays Courtney from time to time and don't want to discuss her late husband who he didn't get along with". There.
Maybe Corgan is saving it for a book or something. Would have been nice if Rogan had pressed him a bit. I get just wanting to have a chill convo though, it was one of his better interviews of the year.
Michael Lawrence People do talk about doing it but don’t take action all the time. That’s not a good reason by itself, and is exactly why a depressive makes for an easy target.
How were they playing to 700 in Boston in 92? Check the crowds for Nirvana and SP at reading festival UK from August that year. Both bands were massive over here.
My guess is the man now has a wife and kid, he doesn't want to mess with the dark people involved. Soaked in Bleach and the like seem like a lot of misdirection.
Of course he's not gonna talk about Kurt's death. Corgan got some hush hush money from Courtney not to talk on that topic!! Not to mention Courtney was having an affair with Corgan in 1994. She went to visit him in London on 2/26/1994, then went to visit Kurt in Rome, several sources confirm this. Thats when he wrote her the note that he wants a divorce and taking her out of the will.. @@julieanderson5884 Howard Stern threw out some figure in 2013 interview and Courtney said that 100 million is a little low, so maybe she is around 150 million, and Frances has 40 % of publishing money. Joe is literally interviewing Courtney Loves Ex boyfriend about the suicide of her husband. There are rumors she even cheated on Cobain with Corgen. Joe should of probably looked into that lol
I know right? I really don't think Joe is aware that Billy is Courtney's ex.
She also used to fuck Manson and Reznor
Actually I believe that she dumped billy for kurt lol
Cheating in that grunge scene is pretty much not a sin most were too Hooked on heroin to give a shit
I also remember Billy said Courtney Love is the worst human being he has ever met. But I think they are friends again.
@@walrusnation2496 Siamese Dream is still my favorite album by them.

Why didn't Joe ask, "So, you were around that whole scene with Kurt just before he died. What did you see?" Because despite Billy begging the question more than once, Joe knew the answer was going to be, "Oh...I don't really want to talk about it."
No, I just think Joe was too stupid to ask.
Billy Corgan was an EXCELLENT guest. Fantastic episode.

Said no D’arcy, ever.
Wasn't Soaked in Bleach done entirely from the perspective of the private investigator who was in every scene with dialogue? Which would mean that he would have actual recollection of what was said?
Chris Sousa no, u dumb ass

Yeap, in 92 they were both sold out at any venue worldwide.
September 23rd, 1991 at Axis in Boston is the show that he is referring to. One day before the release of Nevermind.
Soaked in Bleach requires some context, so the average person who watched it on Netflix probably wouldn't understand all the details. Wow, Bill Burr is back on the show AGAIN. Love it.
Joe Rogan should bring the investigator that Courtney hired to find Kurt.
TestMeatDollSteak p
