Krist is definitely the most underrated bass player of the 90s - I'll tell you why: watch any Nirvana live video, see him jump and listen to the precision he still has! He's like Nirvana's Ringo Starr - what he plays is not the most technically advanced bass playing, but it's perfect in each and every song.
Yeah. Thats true. And when dave ghrol came into the picture , they became a super incredible rhythm section that allowed kurt do all kind of crazy things.
Krist and Ringo were also each really important in the social dynamics of their bands, as chilled-out, pleasant, reliable people who anchored the more volatile members. Krist was Kurt's close friend, not just some musician he recruited -- it doesn't seem like Nirvana could've existed without him any more than it could've existed without Kurt.
Music is sooo powerful, the moment Black hole Sun starts to play and Chris puts his arm on Kim’s shoulder, it says so much without words. Almost like he knows how hard it is to listen to their fallen friends or something. Beautiful
I'm 39, and Kurt inspired me more than any musician in my life. At age 10, I was absolutely obsessed. He was our Lennon. My favourite guitar is a sea-foam green Fender Jagstang, designed by Kurt. The whole reason I got into music was because of Nirvana.
Seems like most kids wanted to be Kurt or Tom Delonge. I wish I had learned about guys like Scotty Moore and Steve Cropper when I got my guitar in the mid 90s.
I absolutely love you Rick and your channel, but man I wished you followed up with Krist on his Kurt rant instead of transitioning to Black Hole Sun. What a missed opportunity there.
I was exactly the same! I had Nirvana posters all over my room everywhere. I was a jock and as soon as I got into Nirvana I was obsessed with music forever!
I remember seeing an interview with Krist a long time ago after Nirvana ended (RIP Kurt) where he commented on how so many young fans would approach him and thank him. When he would ask them “Why are you thanking me?” their responses were universal: “Because Nirvana saved my life”. In 1991, mine was a life on the brink. I was in a total free fall and was going to end up either dead or in prison. And then Nirvana came along. This rock band is the only reason why I have my freedom today. Thank you Kurt and Krist.
They aren't the faces of the bands, but Krist and Kim were both hugely important. Kim's solos are so distinctive he is immediately recognizable. And Krist's bass was so integral to the sound of Nirvana; I'd listen to tracks like 'Lounge Act' on repeat.
Still won’t come out and admit he knows Rene and Cali overpowers kurt, drugged him, injected him with heroin and shot him to make it look like he took his own life. before he neatly put all his paraphernalia back into his little container. he must be scared of courtney or he’s getting some financial gain from keeping quiet
Kim is still brilliant. In 2018, I was upfront at the MC5 50th Anniversary show, right in front of Kim, who was playing the Fred Sonic Smith parts, but his own way. & he was effin amazing! He hasn't lost anything but perhaps a little hair! 🦃⚡🎸🤯🦃
It’s not the first time I’ve heard Krist say something like “it should have never happened” he has also said “he should never have done that”. Such simple phrasing yet profoundly philosophical about the death of his friend. Krist is a legend, seeing him lament the death of his best mate is just bloody sad.
It happened when I a teenager and so it seemed inevitable. Like it was something that had to happen. But then you get older, you read about the circumstances, and you know it didn't have to happen. It wasn't inevitable. There is no such thing as fate, just tragedy.
Kurt didn't kill himself, he didn't overdose, he was killed. Krist knows the story doesn't add up and he should at least just not discuss it like Dave Grohl.
@JustinEpperly he shot himself dumbass, how many times does this have to be said? Only his DNA was there, Courtney's toxic ass didn't even know it happened until later.
@@JustinEpperly I think Krist is trying to cope, he's accepted the "suicide" so he doesn't have to live knowing his best friend was murdered and he can't do anything.
@@rozzer666 To elaborate, as a child he told his sister that he was going to be famous some day and he really did play with the idea of being one of the greats in music. But success came so fast for Nirvana. now granted, they had been a band grinding it out in crummy clubs for years, but when Nevermind came out the band was strapped to a rocket taking them to the height of fame. Probably to a place he had dreamed of but also a place he didn't expect to get to so soon. I always felt that Kurt felt that in many ways he didn't deserve for several reasons but he wanted that validation to make him feel like maybe he did deserve the recognition. At the same time I feel that Kurt felt uncomfortable to some extent with his fame. At the same time though, he was probably really happy with the money which represented a level of security that he had never known before.
A lot of times, us as fans can be selfish without even thinking about it. When Kurt and Chris both passed, a lot of fans (including me) reacted to it from how it effected us. Seeing interviews like this really reminds you that so much more was lost than just our favorite guitarist / singer / artist at the time. To see people like Krist & Kim still visibly hurting after all these years, puts it into perspective for me.
Yeah, man. I still get sad thinking about rock stars like Kurt Cobain and Ritchie Valens who died way too early. It leaves the whole world wondering "what could have happened if they didn't die?" It's truly tragic.
Cruelest part is they have to try to translate the art, and they do clinically and anecdotally, but Cobain and Cornel were probably winging it off their influences in reaction to music trends, pro and against...but their creation propelled the other people/band members...and the band members were use in good way, to advance art in moment in time...but now they're abandoned in reflection of it succeeding...Together they liked to say loaded, stream of conscious things in interviews, while now they look like they carry big responsibility trying to contextualize in hindsight.
I agree, like it’s probably tough for both of them to listen to some of this music after everything that happened. I got the impression Kim was maybe a little emotional hearing black hole sun and I think Krist picked up on that.
About a week after Krist and Curt gave me the demo cassette of Nevermind I went to a job in Rhode Island. I was playing the tape on and off for the crew and then they were wearing it out so I pulled it, turned on the FM and put the tape in my jacket. Bout an hour later I heard "Polly wants a cracker" . I'm all ,"you bastards took my tape outta my pocket?". They're "no it's the radio". I'm "no way, these are friends of mine in Seattle"....sure enough it was on the radio. Coast to coast in a matter of weeks. Phenomenal
oh god, i just realized what he meant when Krist pats kim on the shoulder... Same weird thing man... Both dealing with the feelings invoked by hearing the voices of lost loved ones. Wow. I cried at that moment.
No ego..just appreciative to have the time they had with their band. And yeah...just to know you and your part in the band was such a great privelage and made listeners just appreciate you.. That makes a bigger impact than any amount of fame.
Sad that both Kurt and Chris passed the way they did, absolutely magnificent artists. Also its bitter sweet watching Kim and Krist react to hearing their vocals again. Rick does a great job keeping things moving so as not to dwell on it too long and bring it back to music. This could easily have just been filled with uncomfortable silences. Rick's a really good interviewer in that sense.
@@philiphalpenny9761 when did Krist endorse Trump? Was it 2016, 2020, or 2024? I mean, either one is pretty heartbreaking to hear, but each has different implications, you know?

I remember the day Chris Cornell died and radio stations on the west coast (I was in Los Angeles at the time) played black hole sun right as the sun was about to disappear on the horizon. It was truly a moment I will never forget. A fitting tribute to the song and Chris.
I live in Los Angeles - I remember the day Kurt Cobain died, and oddly, one of the rock stations announced his death and then played Black Hole Sun. And, yeah, I will never forget that. Your comment reminded me of that.
I mean, seriously, Rick is the ultimate musical artist interviewer, his insights and comments are far beyond what most people can come up with when talking to legends like these. Awesome job.

These types of conversations were none existent back in the day and to get this type of insight and feelings from the people who are directly responsible for this iconic soundtrack that will forever be my life. Thanks again Rick

Krist is one of the most likeable people ever and his bass playing with nirvana elevates them so much. Also maybe the greatest stage presence from a bass player ever. ALSO the dudes got a steel noggin 😅 I’d have died from a bass to the head like that for sure
It’s funny bc if you had asked people who were roadies for their tours or were interviewers a lot of them would probably say that Krist was an ass. Now the guys insanely likable and you can’t help but to think that maybe part of that is due to not only losing Kurt but also how that all went down since Kurt had assaulted krist at the airport when krist took him to go to rehab days before Kurt’s death. Obviously age also has an effect but losing a friend in that manner has to fuck with you especially after a falling out of sorts like that

The record from Krist's new band 3rd Secret is my favorite of last year; such a great suite of songs - vibe for days and so damn good on repeat listens. He's done a lot of stuff post Nirvana but I'm so happy that he's found this groove with his new group; highly recommend it to people all the time.
Scott Weiland is an extremely underrated singer, frontman, and musician. You ask Slash and Duff how he was able to change certain melodies and arrangements of songs just by listening to rough demo’s. I’m not even a big STP fan but the guy was a great talent.
Beautiful group of men who went against each other but faced the same tragedy both songs are epic both musicians were epic this is bitter sweet God bless them Chris and Kurt forever
Krist seems like such a genuine person. Kurt was his brother and I think no one knew him as well as Krist, not even Courtney. I can’t even imagine the pain he went through and it seems like he has never really gotten over Kurt’s death. Just such a terribly tragic event… as Krist said ‘he shouldn’t have done that’
The forth guy sitting here is Jack Endino of the band Skinyard, who were another early Seattle band. Around 1985 or 86 me and my friend Carmela got a Skinyard demo and tried to get them signed to the label Alternative Tentacles since we were friends with the head of the label. But she said “I don’t need to sign this band. They’re mainstream”. But Endino had told us that the mainstream labels said they were too punk rock. I think that epitomized the conundrum the Seattle sound created which is why it wasn’t until almost five years later that Nirvana and the rest really broke out. I wish Rick had asked Endino about Skinyard. To my ears they were like a punk rock King Crimson.
I'll be off to watch Montage of Heck after this. Nirvana.... a moment in time, for which im thankful I lived through. These interviews are such gems for music lovers of different generations. This one covers my generation, and man i can't really tell how that feels hearing these icons i loved so much... I stopped listening to Nirvana and Soundgarden at one point, around 20 years ago. I didn't want to overhear theim, i was at the verge of it. Now hearing these ... I'll say it, GODS of my teenage years, and also realizing they are icons of the past, it's as thrilling as melancholic. Brings me back reminiscences of my turbulent adolescence moods. Thx, from France.
This is great. Keep this type of content coming. The layers on these songs from generational talented bands is amazing. Thank you for sharing the story on how these songs came together from two of our favorite bands (Nirvana, Soundgarden).
I've been really ignoring my music writing/performing the last few years. I just realized what I was watching here, seeing Krist and Kim sitting there. Both of their guys died, and probably definitely still had fuel in the tank. I'm not Kurt or Chris by a long shot, but I'm not dead. That pat on the shoulder was really sweet, and kinda crushing. I gotta do better.
I’m glad Krist can finally talk about Kurt and Nirvana w a level of acceptance and appreciation. For decades it seemed like he couldn’t let go of all the anger and sadness.

I was born in 81, Nevermind was the first cassette I ever bought. I was the only kid in my elementary school wearing Nirvana shirts in the 4th grade. For years I was sad about Kurt's death and wished he was still here. Now that I'm older I'm kind of glad he was immortalized at age 27. Seeing Krist and Dave get older makes me a bit sad. I wouldn't have wanted to watch my teenage idol grow old. Whenever I think of Kurt, I picture how he looked at the Nirvana MTV Unplugged. The wool cardigan, the greasy blonde hair tucked neatly behind his ears, and those piercing blue eyes.

One of the guys mentioned "Black Hole Sun" wasn't 'gratuitous Prog' and it made me smile, because "Gratuitous Prog" would be a great name for an album I'd want to buy! 😁
@@dylandenney3980 I was thinking it would be a good name for an actual Prog-Rock band, one that just doesn't give a damn if their style or their instrument solos are perceived as gratuitous or not. I think their first album cover should have the bands name across the top: "Gratuitous Prog" Directly below the band name is a band photo, or whatever artwork they prefer. At the bottom of the album cover is the album's title: "Deal With It!" I guess, that's sort of a "Prog-Punk" attitude, now that you mention it. 🙂
Black hole sun was so picturesque when I would listen and watch on MTV back in the day. You actually felt like you were in that blazing heat or trying to catch a break from it in the pool. Such an amazing song and very instrumental for my youth 😎
That's definitely the most I've ever heard Kim speak. I liked hearing him talk. When he mentioned Andy i was almost shocked because if not thought of Andy wood for a LONG time but i had the Apple record and played it all the time in 90s. I agree that the prolific writing of Andy and Chris really defined then. They had such a wide array of songs they could go to fit any album or band change up.
Hearing the intro to Black Hole Sun made me think of the first time I heard it when it just came out, my buddy says have you heard the new Soundgarden and he puts BHS on and it literally brought tears to my eyes (granted we were really high) and leave the room after about a minute- it was like being kicked in the face with sadness and hope and bitterness and beauty all at once. I've only felt that a handful of times in my life, that song was a whole other level than what bands at that time were doing
I saw Soundgarden live in '96 in Germany. Thoughout the 2 hours and a half or 3 hours they played, Chris never removed his stare that was fixed at some point ahead close to the roof of the venue. They were like a heavy industrial machine. Good memories
I couldn't care less which guitarist played which part on the recording. What I've ALWAYS wanted to know was how were those chords choose during the solo? It's one of the strangest parts to a rock song I've ever heard and it's amazing in ways I can't articulate. It takes so long to resolve the tension being built but the resolve just feels perfect. One of the best written songs in the last thirty years.
I had the pleasure of meeting Krist by accident lol in 2013. My partner was performing a show and Krist and his wife happened to be there. I told him how Nirvana literally saved my life. He was very kind

Seems like most kids wanted to be Kurt or Tom Delonge. I wish I had learned about guys like Scotty Moore and Steve Cropper when I got my guitar in the mid 90s.
That’s a really interesting comparison. Both were great writers at completely opposite ends of the spectrum from each other.
Same brother
If you focus on the bass in Heart-Shaped Box, you'll notice how brilliant it is.
Kim is still brilliant. In 2018, I was upfront at the MC5 50th Anniversary show, right in front of Kim, who was playing the Fred Sonic Smith parts, but his own way. & he was effin amazing! He hasn't lost anything but perhaps a little hair! 🦃⚡🎸🤯🦃
Lounge act is one of my favorite tunes. Lead off with the bass.
Krists Bass solo on love buzz is pretty crazy
I really love Krist. His genuiness, compassion, empathy and humanity always pours out when you see him speak. Just a great guy.
It’s not the first time I’ve heard Krist say something like “it should have never happened” he has also said “he should never have done that”.
Such simple phrasing yet profoundly philosophical about the death of his friend.
Krist is a legend, seeing him lament the death of his best mate is just bloody sad.
Yes, it's very, very sad... I still remember this bloody day when they said on the radio that Kurt is gone...
@@JustinEpperly
I think Krist is trying to cope, he's accepted the "suicide" so he doesn't have to live knowing his best friend was murdered and he can't do anything.
I always thought that Kurt wasn't necessarily interested in success, but he really craved validation.
Read Kurts journals he was intensely driven to hit the big time and VERY motivated to do whatever it took
@@vicvega3614 Yeah I did read his journals, but I also read his suicide note.
Interesting point. Could well be possible
Seems like all kurt done is write songs and poems , seems like he was very driven
You're absolutely right. In defense, as much as it can be defended, most of us were young and stupid.
Was Kim friends with Kurt? I’m a bit new to all the “history” of this if you will lol
Phenomenal

Yessss, I was thinking that toooo 🥺
Krist now looks like a lot of guys I see at Home Depot on the weekends, lol
He was always just a regular dude. And i say that as a compliment
Nirvana was never about the looks.
Kim also
Yeah, he's nearly 60, maybe you will also look like a grandparent at 60.
He’s gorgeous
black hole sun is an absolute masterpiece. beautiful melodies, incredible
Such an addicting song. Love it
No ego..just appreciative to have the time they had with their band. And yeah...just to know you and your part in the band was such a great privelage and made listeners just appreciate you.. That makes a bigger impact than any amount of fame.
I remember Krist throwing his bass guitar up in the air as far as he could. Dude was crazy
Cobain's opinion of Krist's endorsement of Trump would not be hard to imagine...
Chris is ok he hasn't passed on

I remember the day Chris Cornell died and radio stations on the west coast (I was in Los Angeles at the time) played black hole sun right as the sun was about to disappear on the horizon. It was truly a moment I will never forget.
A fitting tribute to the song and Chris.
I live in Los Angeles - I remember the day Kurt Cobain died, and oddly, one of the rock stations announced his death and then played Black Hole Sun. And, yeah, I will never forget that. Your comment reminded me of that.
I love how Krist pats Kim Thayil’s shoulder very deliberately, as if to say, ‘Yep…’
I mean, seriously, Rick is the ultimate musical artist interviewer, his insights and comments are far beyond what most people can come up with when talking to legends like these. Awesome job.
this conversation was unreal...still doesn't seem real for some reason seeing the guys talk about their past like this in this setting. These types of conversations were none existent back in the day and to get this type of insight and feelings from the people who are directly responsible for this iconic soundtrack that will forever be my life.

Carol Kay of the wrecking crew and Stanley Clark may just come come into that category.
The record from Krist's new band 3rd Secret is my favorite of last year; such a great suite of songs - vibe for days and so damn good on repeat listens. He's done a lot of stuff post Nirvana but I'm so happy that he's found this groove with his new group; highly recommend it to people all the time.
I could listen to Krist talk for hours, he is also a gentle soul❤
Cobain, Cornell, Wieland and Layne Staley will be never forgotten as the faces of early 90s during the Grunge Movement
Wieland? Behave
Weiland should come last and Layne should be first on the vocal skill list then Cornell then Cobain then wieland
Scott Weiland is an extremely underrated singer, frontman, and musician. You ask Slash and Duff how he was able to change certain melodies and arrangements of songs just by listening to rough demo’s. I’m not even a big STP fan but the guy was a great talent.
Lanegan ☹️
Andy wood!
Beautiful group of men who went against each other but faced the same tragedy both songs are epic both musicians were epic this is bitter sweet God bless them Chris and Kurt forever
This interview was fantastic. Imma go listen to it again. I love your work!
Krist seems like such a genuine person. Kurt was his brother and I think no one knew him as well as Krist, not even Courtney. I can’t even imagine the pain he went through and it seems like he has never really gotten over Kurt’s death. Just such a terribly tragic event… as Krist said ‘he shouldn’t have done that’
krist is such a warm hearted person, one of my favourite people ever
Did Jello not have a say? I would think he would've done anything to sign Nirvana, no?
He's more famously known as the engineer behind Nirvana's bleach album.
Jack Endino fucking rocks
THANK YOU!
It seems like Krist still hasn't gotten over his friend's death, all these years later. His sadness makes me sad.

I'll be off to watch Montage of Heck after this. Nirvana.... a moment in time, for which im thankful I lived through. RIP Kurt Cobain, gone too soon, but definitely will never be forgotten.
I will always blame drugs and Courtney about it.

That being said I met Krist around 2003-4 when he was touring speaking on politics. He was just standing by himself after he spoke. I walked over to meet him I had to. When I got over to him it was if I’d walked up on a mountain. He’s giant of a man. Reached his giant hand out to shake mine. One of the greatest moments of my life!

I was 21 in 92 … saw Nirvana at the Michigan State Fairgrounds in 93. Will never forget the opening Radio Friendly Unit Shifter and the crowd just going OFF. They sounded so good , such a tight band at the end

Radio Friendly Unit Shifter is totally underrated. An absolute banger of a song when it is played live.
This interview is priceless, we are all indebted to Rick for this.
"He [Kurt] had to deal with that drug addiction, and that's what tore him down. It was too powerful. It should've never happened." - Krist Novoselic

I’ll never forget coming home at midnight stoned as all hell. Turned on mtv as most teenagers in the 90s did. All of a sudden Teen Spirit came on and my jaw dropped and I said “this is gonna be huge” I was not wrong.
I was born in 81, Nevermind was the first cassette I ever bought. I was the only kid in my elementary school wearing Nirvana shirts in the 4th grade.
