My father abandoned my mom and two brothers and I when I was 2. I can remember watching this show back since the 80's and can say without any reservation that I wouldn't be the man my family needs me to be without all the instruction I received from this show, as well as the example that Roger, Norm, Kevin and all the rest gave to me on how to be a competent and caring man. Can't thank them enough.

As a 77 year old retired construction trades worker representing the third generation of a local Construction family (my son and son-in-law currently the fourth), This Old House has always been the Standard Bearer for residential construction over its entire existence. Starting with Norm Abrams and including all the other disciplines represented (Richard, Tom, Roger, and a few electricians), it has always displayed the highest level of skill and professional craftsmen to represent the trades. Can't think of any other current DIY show that comes close to representing a accurate account of the "real every day meaning" of doing professional level construction.
Those of us who take pride in the work we leave behind when our job is complete respect and thank those "professional and skilled" craftsmen that have been the TOH crew over the years. 👍👍👍👍

From what I have seen on TOH, Roger seems like an extremely caring and wonderful person. He always seemed to have a calm and patient demeanor on the show. I hope he is using the retirement from the show to enjoy his time with family and take care of himself. I noticed that he does seem to limp and have more movement issues in later seasons, and this could be anything, especially for someone who worked such a physically demanding job for so long. We miss you Roger, please take care of yourself!

What I have always appreciated about the This Old House staff is that they are genuine, down-to-earth people who actually do the work that we see on the program. Many/most HGTV "stars" are more actors than builders, doing video bites while other, unseen craftsmen do most of the work. Roger, like all the TOH experts, worked with the property owners to produce a landscaping scheme that met their needs and wants rather than pushing ahead on his own and surprising them at a phony "reveal".
BTW, Roger's net worth is the result of a successful business career. He worked hard for that money, and his TOH "pension" is very modest. He can look back on a job well done, and I wish him the best.

Roger will be sorely missed by TOH fans, but Jen brings a new face with new ideas. Roger, you have my deepest gratitude for all you have done to help us home owners through the day.

I miss Roger. He was like your best friend neighbor who came over to help you out. He had a way of explaining what and how to plant without talking down to people. I especially love his 'accent' ( that sounds just like mine). Even though I haven't lived in New England for many years, his advice about "finding the right plant" is universal. I wish him well in his retirement and hope any medical problems can be resolved. Jenn's doing great, but there's only one Roger Cook.

Lots of errors in this short video.
Roger's letter wasn't from 2008, pretty sure it was 2018.
Also, the Tonight Show segment wasn't in June 2020 (during the height of the Covid pandemic)..... it was January 2020 before the pandemic started.

Roger has always been an integral part of this old house and I hate to see him go, but I'm very happy to see that he's taking care of business and spending time with his family. That makes me really happy these these guys are definitely a different breed of media characters, because they really don't care about clout or anything like that they just do what they have to do and have been following the same thing since Bob Villa back 40 years ago. As did I, Grew up watching toh, and hometime, new Yankee workshop, and the wood Wright shop every Saturday morning, grew up remodeling the house with my dad, and loved being in hands on classes like tech, then ended up going to school to become a tech teacher, so I could share what I learned from the shows to give back and pass the knowledge on. I've had so many students go into construction, engineering and even come back to tell me all about their home improvement projects.

The motivation to build my own home came from This Old House. I started watching the series in the 70's and purchased several of their books and videotapes. My house, completed in 1993, incorporates into it many of the building techniques and features I picked up from watching this program. Norm is the greatest, but together, all the cast members made the show the success that it's been over four decades.

I don't care about his worth, other than being happy that he can retire comfortably. Roger was wonderful in sharing so much information, I watch re-runs, just to catch information that I previously missed. TOH was the perfect show for me as my two loves are wood working and gardening. Now unable to move much, I still do a little of both.
Roger had a wonderful way of explaining in everyday language how to do each task. While he did not explain everything, he gave enough to allow one to do most jobs, and if you were smart, you would research a little more.
I hope he overcomes his health issues and can enjoy the remainder of his life.

And every single dollar was earned! Hard work that must have taken a toll on his body. Absolutely miss him on the show. Taught me many things watching his masterpieces being constructed.

Even though I am not a homeowner, I learned so much from the guys on TOH. In my part of the country the show aired on Saturday nights at 7 PM. My wife knew not to serve dinner on Saturday nights until 8:00. I think I only missed a handful of shows since I began watching in 1980.

I still access both show's for help all the time, but I used to look forward to Roger's new episodes. So now who's going to harass Silva.🥰 Keep up the good work-you're my Encyclopedia Brittanica!

At some point, in every occupation, you reach "a certain point"...
and that usually means it's time to move on. That doesn't necessarily mean one is burned-out because of the job; it could mean that there are just other considerations in life.
Over the years I've enjoyed and have benefited from Roger's expert knowledge and tips on landscaping and gardening.
    He will be missed...

yes indeed. as i said in my post it is none of our business what hes worth. that aside i do agree with you, roger will be missed on the show. jenn has earned her spot. i will support her as well. see i had an issue with somebodies net worth question. am quite sure the salary and benefits will assist him as he transitions into retirement. as long as he can keep busy mentally and somewhat physically, he will live quite awhile.

@@yamahonkawazuki the wealth thing was/is a non-issue for me. Change is constant...one person moves on; another comes along. I think the young woman will do an excellent job.
