Oof, I can just close my eyes listening to this and it transports me to Sunday afternoons in the early 2000’s after lunch and dozing off to the sound of PBS on TV 💭💭💭 No cable, no smartphones, just good vibes.
He really is. It will be a very sad day when he, Kevin and Richard retire from TOH. The lack of Roger Cook alone has been palpable. All of them are a legendary crew that can never be replaced.
WOW! Been watching this since 88 when I was 8. I love seeing the old episodes. I feel like Tommy, Rich and Norm are like Uncles to me. My love of woodworking and home remodeling comes directly from these 3 guys.
The design and craftsmanship from 1987 would still be desirable in 2020 and beyond. You can say what you want about Bob Vila but that craftsman on that show were equivalent to an Olympic Dream Team in so many ways. Everyone of them is a legend in home building, remodeling, finish carpentry, design, mechanical, decorating and finish landscaping. They made craftsman a wonderful career choice and inspirational to many DIY’rs such as myself and other family members who were glued to each and every episode. So much so when working we spoke with a Boston accent to sound like Norm and Tom. 🤣🤣🤣
@pyrotechnic5254 That’s an odd comment as we live in a free country. If you don’t like the politics, taxes, jobs, crime, social issues, or anything else you pack your bags and move. If there is someone holding you back or down you’re not a victim but a volunteer.
This was exactly what I needed to see today. Tommy is an awesome presence on the show these days and probably one of my favorite members of the team. This hair though.... Wonderful feathering and fullness 😂😂
Hey Tommy, it happens to all of us...time! Back in 1987 I was 40 years old and at the the peak of my bricklaying but stayed active till 2002 when my back gave out but would love to be laying brick today at 73. Maybe not on the big jobs but house work for sure. Hope to see you on many more episodes of TOH, Greg.
Feels like yesterday, I graduated High School back in 87 and started college that fall. My dad is 79, retired and owned his own house painting business which I took over, I realized that I enjoy working with my hands more than I did sitting in an office and get more satisfaction at the end of the day. Always enjoy watching TOH and still watch to this day.
What's interesting to me is how he sounds. He is speaking like young contractor's do to him today. Got a little of that hero worship with a dash of nerousness. Not wanting to say the wrong thing he talks so little compared to today when he goes on about the different techniques he has learned since this was recorded. Really shows how he was just like the workers he showcases today. Great clip.
This was the year I graduated high school. Started watching the show years before this with my dad. I thought home renovation was cool even as a grade schooler. My kids are now buying their first homes and keeping my old butt busy doing stuff. Just replaced my first load bearing wall with an LVL beam to carry the load, and it all started with this little show. Thanks guys!
He sure has polished up nicely from this first appearance but he had the goods even back then. No wonder PBS scooped him up immediately. His presence on camera is nails and his knowledge base always outstanding. Neat video.
I have been watching Tom since I was a kid. Whenever his segments are on TOH I pay attention! Thanks for the great work Tom your skill is always inspirational.
Great to see this clip. I used to watch This Old House on PBS in Houston on the weekends during this time. Breakfast followed by This Old House, and then the New Yankee Workshop. Great lineup, and great memories.
I was thinking the same thing! I can imagine the house being sold 10 years after this was filmed and they demo’d the entire kitchen to make it ‘modern’ with SS appliances and IKEA style cabinetry.
Comes 2020 and a TV crew... "This is so dated. We are going to rip out the kitchen and open all the walls... " The master craftsmanship never given a thought. What great workmanship this was.
That kitchen is not dated at all. In fact it aged so well it’s fully back in style ❤ nice craftmenship coloring and that marble table for pastry and baking was pure genius ❤
Man, my parents were barely 12-15 when this was released and I was years from being conceived. and now I binge watch the show in my free time! Oh how the world works.
My son and I have learned so much from Tom, he's become a house hold name. We made a headboard the other day and were constantly referring to his tips . Thanks Tommy!
Tom Silva looks so great today as he did in his first appearance. He is so talented, and still so handsome today! I love watching This Old House because of him. My husband is 65 and looked similar to Tom in the 80's with his mustache and dark hair. My husband is also very talented with woodworking and tools. I love that Tom had a hammer in his hand at age 3 or 4. We have a new grandson and I hope he will carry on the tradition of working with tools like my husband and son! Thank you Tom Silva for your episodes on This Old House! We live in CT and drove to see the Narragansett home that was recently on the program. So beautiful!!!
Indeed. Today everybody seems to want a white kitchen, similar to the trendy late 80's. At least this time the cabinets are wood and not formica. This kitchen had a beautiful and intricate high ceiling which opened it up very nicely and helped it age well, I also liked that even back then now 35 years ago, they painted the fireplace area a different color to set it off from the dark wood 👍🏽
@Roy Hill .... actually, if you go back to the beginning it was Norm who did some work at the home of a PBS executive and the guy took note of how much skill was involved, plus the VERY small scrap pile. A home improvement show was on their list for the following season and Norm was hired. It's unclear if the show was already in production or if Bob was already cast as the lead roll as they were both in the first season. More on this WIKI page. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norm_Abram
I would have loved to see the floor after they stained it. Besides the plants that 1987 kitchen is more beautiful than my 2020 kitchen. Really cool to see these guys 33 years ago.
I closed my eyes before he appeared on the screen, and as he was talking I pictured him in my mind as he looks today, talking. Then I opened my eyes, and boy was I surprised!
I have watched Tom Silva for the better part of my life. He is really the same just a bit more snow on the top. Great contractor! My Dad I love to watch "Ask This Old House".
I was hoping Tommy would have have worn Silva Brothers Blue, but then again good help is hard to find. Remember this was his project and Bob crashed the build. Seriously, thank God for Technology like AutoCad based products. Those plans belong in a museum. Tom you are a master teacher-thanks.
...I LOVE watching the 'old' episodes of TOH and ATOH....I often fall asleep with this playing in the background...watching these guys reminds me of my dad who could do almost ANYTHING...when I was about 6 or 7, I watched him install knotty pine wainscoting in our dining room, and tile the kitchen floor after ripping up the old linoleum...a few years later he replaced the hot sir heating system with hot water bsseboard heating in out 2 story house in Fort Lee, NJ...all by himself, wee three boys were too young to provide adequate assistance...ca. 1959 he added a dormer (for our maternal grandmother who spent 4 or 5 months with us every year) by raising the roof (assisted by his business partner, Jack)...I watched him cut through the roof and build the frames, raise the roof and get it all enclosed in one day...TOH was his favorite series before he passed away from cancer in 1984...I remember watching it with him here in Florida....
It's what I thought when I saw the thumbnail without reading the title. It's like a bad version of Undercover Boss with Tom undergone a disguise from some freelancer from Fiverr. Tom: "They'll never recognize me"
Man o man. Tom voice did not age. He sounds exactly the same today.
Same New England accent too
I will say his stage presence has gotten better with age.
emtfarva; nice handle :)

I totally agree and I so miss those days.
Tom is the man. Taught me so many tricks and stuff for woodworking.
Hell he’s taught half the world this stuff. 👏
Tom Silva is the best contractor that I've ever seen, I've watched every episode since the beginning, very professional and impeccable work.
