Simon and Garfunkel wrote this song at a time when the tv was taking over the home. People no longer talked at the dinner table, they watched tv while they ate and the tv was becoming the electric baby sitter. They were warning us not to ignore each other. Disturbed is the reality we have today. People talking without speaking...they text. Hearing without listening...they read what others write on their phones. No one wants to disturb the sound of silence by actually interacting with another person. And the neon god we made? The Smart phone. A whole generation has lost the art of being social with each other and that is the fulfillment of Simon and Garfunkel's warning and the rage for this loss is Disturb's version.
wow, not expecting to see something this "below guts punch" deep text in here, this is clearly you bottomless jar of words burst open for this reaction. do not take it badly but I'm going to steal half of your words here.
Paul Simon heard Disturbed's cover of his Simon & Garfunkel classic "The Sound of Silence" and he enjoyed it enough to reach out to singer David Draiman and tell him so.
@user-ji9pb6qe7r That one was very good, too. Covers can be hard even for talented muscians. If the song just wasn't written for you. . . A few covers by lesser known groups that I think are worth checking out: Black Betty by Spiderbait. Originally an old folk song but most famously by Ram Jam. Far Far Away by Pretty Maids. Originally by Slade. It's massively popular to cover, but the Pretty Maids version is honestly the only one worth listening to. Rocketman by Iron Horse. Originally one of Elton John's bigger hits. Iron Horse put an interesting bluegrass spin on it. I Feel Love by The Blue Man Group with Venus Hum and Annette Stearn. Originally by Donna Summer. Not just an awesome cover, but an amazing stage performance also. Annette can SING, and she is smiling through the whole song.
@@m.cigledy6769 Bad Wolves cover of the Cranberries' Zombie is incredible too (and that's coming from someone who think Zombie is in the top 5 song ever written, but they slayed it, hell Dolores herself approved)
@@guifire9747 YES. Very well done. Leo Moracchioli also did a version of Zombie that is worth a listen. He has covered a lot of songs from very different artists, and he puts a heavy metal spin on everything. He also doesn't take it too seriously, which usually means it ends up much better.
Thanks to S & G for writing and recording this classic over 50 years ago, allowing Disturbed, Pentatonix and others to re-interpret the meaning.......a warning against an increasingly detached, unfeeling, cold society.......maybe more relevant today than in the 1960's.......
They reckon that getting goosebumps while listening to a song like this is often a sign of greatness - it's as if your soul is reacting to it, you are recognising the lead singer's brilliance. The lead singer being one David Draiman, whose own idol was the late, great Freddie Mercury.
People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening......such a great line Ola, Simon and Garfunkel was such a great duo. Check out their songs. My favorite is "Bridge Over Troubled Water", which was covered by Elvis
Absolutely, Simon predicted how we have become isolated from ourselves and reality. So sad. And now AI puts transcripts full of horrid mistakes so nothing makes sense.
2 Comments, 1- This song written in '64 was a warning that people were starting to not talk to each other, sitting in silence on the bus, in the lunch rooms & dinner tables. IMO Disturbed's version conveys the anger that that warning wasn't listened to as today we are buried in our cell phones more than we talk to the people around us. 2- I also love the 2nd hidden message that music & musicians can make us aware of the issues of people that can't speak for themselves or go unheard with the image of the musicians with the instruments in the boat crossing the dividing river to the masses with the scores (messages) that need to be heard both by others & our governments.
David Draiman...amazing range ... amazing control...a powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back, which is incredibly difficult to do . He is so unique as he actually puts vibrato on his distortion!....also VERY difficult to do...one of the best male vocalists on the planet in my opinion. Loved your reaction.
My friend called me to his place when he got the album. We replayed it for hours, just mesmerized, stunned!! Visuals are awesome not discounting the awesome singing!!
I can't watch enough people reacting to the absolute beauty of this song. And not simply this song I should probably say. Simon and Garfunkel came forward to say the song was clearly the song of Disturbed after seeing them perform this song. I literally just look up anyone reacting to this song, be it the music video or the live performance on Conan(I really hope I'm not wrong on the late night show!😖) and every time it hits. I truly hope there's never a time this version doesn't effect me.

I went down the Disturbed’s rabbit hole during the COVID shutdown when I saw this video. I’d never heard of the band before. Since then I’ve viewed all there videos and concerts. I even love all their heavy metal/head-banging songs! If you like less heavy, more rock sound, I highly recommend the Don’t Tell Me official video just released in January ‘24. David Draiman duets with the best female rock singer in the world, Ann Wilson of Heart. I guarantee you WILL need a tissue for that one!
The original by Simon & Garfunkel has a very different vibe, and it would be well worth you reacting to that as a companion. Both it and Disturb’s takes are outstanding renditions in very different ways.
I was 5yrs old, and I still remember the event of what this song was written about. It made the song sad. After hearing it today at age 65, it gives the song a dark tent. Sad and dark, that is how it was. The day the US government assassinated their sitting president. Rest in peace, JFK. Rest in peace, RFK. Thank you, David, for a great rendering to a great written song. God bless
The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel is sad resignation. A plea. The Sound of Silence by Disturbed is Dammit, LISTEN! *** The Warning *** "And the people bowed and prayed, to the neon god they made." ~ Paul Simon "And the people bowed and prayed, to the golden calf they made." ~ Old Testament
I am always amazed that no one every notices the reference to the life of Christ and how society has turned from His teachings to the distractions of the day.
Amazing isn’t he? Best cover ever. I had a brain fart while listening to this for the 100th or so time and now every time I hear this gutrenching version I think of the U.S. and what’s happening there with their politics. Unthinkable but happening and so sad. Sheesh!
I'll let you all in on a little secret.......I watched David do it many years ago. Mesmerized. This many years later, watching videos like this seeing others reactions is like day one all over again.
I like this cover better than the original. It has so much more power and emotion than Simon and Garfunkel's. The message is still as relevant as it was when it was written.
In the web browser version of youtube you can click the gear and switch off "show annotations" from the menu to disable most of the pop-overs obscuring the video.
Ola, hold off on the live version - at least for now. Listen to the original by the legendary duo of Simon and Garfunkel. It was written by Paul Simon. in the 1960's and is iconic. My favorite cover of "Sound of Silence" is by the acapella group Pentatonix and I highly recommend it. Pentatonix is the same group I recommended you listen to their version of "Bohemian Rhapsody". Trust me on this. Every reactor has had their mind blown by them. As for Simon and Garfunkel check out another iconic song by them, "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Your guy, Elvis also did a great version. But you need to hear Art Garfunkel's angelic voice first.
Two comments: 1) Check out Disturbed's cover of 'Land of Confusion' (originally by Genesis) and 2) if you are going to react to a cover that you haven't listened to the original of, please do so... or make it its own reaction and do a back-to-back... in these cases, context usually helps. :)
He was playing a concert and invited Miles Kennedy on stage and they sang this song. It was epic. Ola I know you probably think Miles is hot .😊 So that extra incentive to watch it. Thanks Ola.❤😊

So glad you did the video first to give you context, now you can listen to the live version from the Conan show excellent reaction later beautiful.❤️😎🇺🇸
Reactors should really familiarize themselves with the original Simon and Garfunkel version of this song before they tackle this cover. It's SO different in tone and delivery and the contrast is part of what makes this version so great. I understand that many don't know it's a cover, I just wish they all did.
Just as a suggestion, always go with a live version first. Anyone, including me, will sound great in a studio. Lots of electronics and corrections in the final mix. Any musician or performer is only as accomplished as their ability to perform love. Just a thought.
I disagree. Always go with the studio version first, so you understand the original song/intent (or listen to the original before the cover version). It is only after becoming familiar with the original version that you can truly appreciate the impact of a live performance or a well done cover/tribute. With this version of The Sound of Silence, I feel that the visuals of the music video far outweigh the vocal performance from the Conan recording (as masterful as that performance is) and I feel the live performance is much better after watching the video/studio version first.

Well said my friend !!
Truth.
SIMON wrote this song! And wrote all of their songs. Garfunkel was his singing partner.
My mom's interpretation of the song was that it was about neon lights - people stopping to stare at what the lights would spell out.
wow, not expecting to see something this "below guts punch" deep text in here, this is clearly you bottomless jar of words burst open for this reaction. do not take it badly but I'm going to steal half of your words here.
Paul Simon heard Disturbed's cover of his Simon & Garfunkel classic "The Sound of Silence" and he enjoyed it enough to reach out to singer David Draiman and tell him so.
And later to invite him to his home in Hawaii.
This is such a moving rendition. Disturbed is truly a fantastic and deep group.
The song is written in an unusual way. It has more verses, but no repeated chorus.
For my ears, this is one of the top 3 covers ever recorded.
Only one I might put above it would be Hearts cover or Stairway to Heaven.

Paul simon is a genius ...... Great cover !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good music lasts forever! 😊
This is a very good cover of the original Simon and Garfunkel song from 1965-66. Disturbed biggest hit song was Down With the Sickness!!
She needs Dan Vasc in her life she won’t be the same she will have a new smitten favorite that’s a promise
Their entire first album bangs, though.
You need to react to don't tell me with Ann Wilson
The reason why there was no sound at the beginning is the sound of silence
My friend called me to his place when he got the album. We replayed it for hours, just mesmerized, stunned!! Visuals are awesome not discounting the awesome singing!!
I don't like disturbed music, but I absolutely love this song. In my opinion, this version is even better than the original.
The Live Version is even more powerful! Must Watch!
Yes--do the live version...you'll LOVE it!!
in the live version he was sick and they autotuned him

This song represents Paul Simon’s soul. That’s how I’ve always felt. 👊🏽
this version is incredible, powerful and very enjoyable, I love it as much as the original ,awesome choice

The Simon & Garfunkel version is the warning. The Disturbed version is the rage that the warning was not heeded.
Read this a million times already
Yup
To really appreciate how good this song is, you have to listen to the original by Simon & Garfunkel before listening to the Disturbed version.
Thank you for not interrupting every few seconds like a lot of others do. You have to let the song play all the way first to get the true effect
They do that to help avoid copyright strike
I have seen and heard grown people cry over this song .. but if you want a truly epic performance look up the ConabOgrien version it is life-changing

The song they wrote for the wrestler was called 'Shattered Glass', and the wrestler was Stone Cold Steve Austin. 😊
Check out the 2003 cover of Tears for Fears' 'Mad World', by Michael Andrews and Gary Jules, from the movie 'Donnie Darko'...
The "Mad World" cover by Gary Jules is like this. It took a great song and brought perfection.

Yes.! Disturbed is Awesome. And your cuteness helps. Love metal.
It's the sound of silence in the beginning :)
Disturbed are an awesome band. This is better than the original I reckon.
He does a live version with Myles Kennedy it is absolutely unbelievable
You should see the live version from the Conan show. It’s just as beautiful and shows how great David’s voice is.
I like this cover better than the original. It has so much more power and emotion than Simon and Garfunkel's. The message is still as relevant as it was when it was written.
You are correct the wrestler stone cold was injured when he returned disturbed did his theme song it was called glass shatters
In my humble opinion one of the greatest songs ever written

You definitely need to experience the live version they performed on Conan O'Brian's talk show. It's available here on UA-cam
Guess what, the first 10secs, is the sound of silence. Loads of people have said, "there's no sound"!
Whole point... Exactly!
Stop being to be able to speak. Songs have been written that no one knows.
Ok, Now that's fire
I’m going to see them again this week soo love
Don't worry too much about getting a little bit emotional, it's hard not to with a song like this.
You should react to the Simon and Garfunkel version, from the concert at central park
If you like this song, you might like .45 or Second Chance by the band Shinedown! Similar Haunting Chilling vocals and good video!😊😊

Go down this Disturbed rabbit hole and you come up with "Down With The Sickness".
Yeah, Disturbed tends to have that effect on people.
Brilliant.
Omg wow powerful
You should do the cover imagine by Chris Cornell. Or long and winding road by George Michael. Both are beautiful renditions of Beatles songs
You are wonderful mate! Thank you
Think you might like The House Of The Rising Sun by the ANIMALS ❤
Please react to the live version on Conan O'Brian. It's marvelous and it will change your life.
Yes. Live. Please.
Powerful expressive beyond the original ..The scenes in the video actually tells the tale of the song visually …. Most miss it ..
Yes do it! Live is a must too keep it up love ur channel ❤️

Love your reaction. Luv from Australia ❤️🎼❤️❤️
I think you would like the live version Conan

Essa versão é perfeita ❤️
Simon and garfunkel predicted what was happening in the world disturbed, s video predicted an apocalyptic word and my god its coming true.....😢
Take away our cell phones
