Katon is easily one of the coolest dudes in Metal, a friend of mine did an interview with katon and my friend had his autistic brother with him so katon went above and beyond and make sure my friend's brother with autism had a safe place on the side of the stage to watch the show away from all the mayhem, during the show he helped pull up every crowd surfer on stage to stage dive. Katon is truly a class act.
I think I seen him at a korn show in Philadelphia all the way back in 97 ? I wanna say but I didn’t wanna bother him. He was in the crowd just having fun
Definitely. When I was getting into metal in high school (98-02), vinyl was nowhere to be found, at least at the bigger stores. When it got popular again around the mid 2000’s, I was already heavily invested in CD’s. I didn’t really want start another format. Still a strictly CD guy haha 🤷♂️
Nobody gave a shit about vinyl from the mid 90's well into the 2000's. They were stashed under the tables in the record stores and were anywhere from $1-5.
I remember playing Hirax at my old gas station job and a black guy came in and said "What kind of white boy shit is this?" and I told him to google the band and Katon and he just said "Well I'll be damned" and bought his gas and walked out 😂
I remember on his Facebook livestreams when Covid hit he’d have a segment where’d he shoutout new bands he heard. The only band I could remember he shoutout was Morbidosdad. You could tell Katon lives Metal and loves it with every bit of his heart.
Katon is one of the all time greats I’m lucky enough to see him around often ever since 1986 and chat with him about metal! Hirax is one of the local icons in LA
Katon being near Gene Hoglan is proof the atomic clock reverses the ravages of time. Phantasm demo is killer, too. What a line up. Anyway, Katon is a national treasure. Correction: international treasure.
I hung with Katon when it was phantasm, next to the Cerritos school! Ron mcgovney never stayed around and talked to anyone. But me and Katon would run the streets..... Of course I just tagged along! Wondering how cool I get to tag along with Katon 🤘💯 I was only 13 -14yrs Old!
Replace Meselloutica absolutely worthless soy boy band their cringe far outweighs even Ride The Lightning and Kill Em All, when these bozo arse hats bought lady gaygay on stage I absolutely lost respect for them to the point I boycott them even if I like Ride The Lightning I do my best to avoid them. For the record Anthrax is a great band you don’t know what time it is if you consider Anthrax lesser than Mesuckballsica. So I say keep Slayer and Anthrax for sure. Megadeth is superior to Metallica since Dave Mustaine wrote most the songs in Kill Em All everyone’s favorite album by them and for them to not credit him for writing the riffs, throwing him out to the wolves and slandering him like an expendable piece of garbage illustrates what scumbag POS human beings they were from the get go to the point they are rolling in millions of dollars of net worth while having the audacity to play victim and being the buffoons they are today. For all these reasons they should be the ones ostracized from the Big 4.
I was at the first hirax backyard show since 89' in east LA, my friend owned the house, and have seen every LA show they've played since, they kick ass more than ever! These are solid fuckin dudes
Katon is an amazing person! And Justin rules for many reasons! And wearing a Goreaphobia shirt (one of my local faves here in NJ) just adds to his coolness level!
Hirax were awesome in the 80's (not familiar with the modern stuff) and Katon seems like such a cool guy. I also think deserves the title of "thanks list iron man" for being listed in EVERY metal & hardcore thanks list of his era!!
This was a great interview. I have a similar problem that he does of sticking to my era of metal bands. Then not really moving forward with the newer stuff.
OK. This was the greatest Katon DePena interview ever! Such a cool guy and an old schooler like me. Katon, I still owe you a couple of tapes from '86. Mike S from the '80's Baltimore scene.
Katon, I would hang with constantly with Katon up in Buena Park CA 1986-87 when his band was phantasm at the time. I was 13-14 yrs old!! But I managed to tag along with Katon, got into all the shows hanging with band's such as Kreator, voivod..... and hung with nuclear Assault for 3 days as they stayed up at the house were the guitarist of phantasm lived.... Wild times 💯🤘 but the best memories of Katon was splitting fries 🍟 at McDonald's. He would take my fries and his and mix them together on the tray. Anyways Katon nicknamed Ditch because i had to skip going to school to be in the mix 🤘🤘🔥💯
Oh shit J dawg so cool of you to interview him , Hirax threw a back yard show in East LA and that shit was turnt haha the cops pulled up for a bit and left hahah
Katon is a legend and has always been known as one of the coolest dudes in the scene. It's so cool to hear someone else who was around and saw some of the same shows /tours. I can say there definitely weren't any people "booing" at the '84 Portland Mercyful Fate show!! The LA scene was full of posers back then.
Just found your channel this week, gotta say I love the pure honesty im hearing from you and the people you interview. Its God damn refreshing. Keep this shit coming J-Dawg🤘🤘Your videos are gonna be part of my daily routine from this point forward. Immolation "Dawn of Possession", Deicide "Legion", and Pestilence "Testimony of the Ancients" i discovered in 1995 had I've never looked fucking back
Cool interview. Nice, Katon throwing out Masacre from Colombia. I never hear anyone bring up that band. Good fucking band. Indeed, finding vinyl when I got into this (96/97) was damn near impossible and continued to be that way for WELL OVER decade. I didn't even bother starting a vinyl collection until years after being into this. I stuck to CDs. But at this point, the vinyl collection has grown immensely (HHR playing a big part of that). Nowhere near my CD collection, but it's getting there. Take Deceased for example. One of my favorite bands. I have all their CDs, but no vinyl. When HHR represses those (King told me himself that you guys were doing it and then you confirmed it the other day), I'm buying pretty much their entire discography on vinyl in one order. Definitely going to be a big boy order.
I used to see Katon at shows in Hollywood when I lived in SoCal back in the 90s. He had this jacket with a big Possessed logo drawn on the back, and all these patches. He's metal to the end!
Hey J-Dawg! Can I make a suggestion? Would it be nice if you made playlist for your channel, these enterviews that you do are part of Heavy Metal history! Would it be nice to have a playlist to track them all, keep up the awesome work!
Lipps said in an interview that Katon promoted an Anvil show were not one person showed up. He just sat down in front of them and said ok play for me and was the audience. It was humiliating to say the least from what he said.
Hirax always comes out raw, i like how his lady brought him back. His voice is still strong and his writing has gotten better. How his family wasnt about his music style, i think most metal heads face that.
Ron mcgovney pulled up when nuclear Assault stayed at the house of the guitarist phantasm, he talked to Anthony of nuclear Assault than left. Cerritos CA.
I’m the same way Katon , most bands have two good albums before I’m out. There are exceptions, some of the legendary bands are putting out some of their best stuff today. Exodus, Cannibal Corpse, Metal Church to name a few.
One of the coolest dudes in the whole scene.
Katon is 💯💯 since I knew him 1986.....
I hung with Katon 1986-87 up in Cerritos, Buena Park CA. Katon is 💯💯 He would let me tag along.. ..
Katon: the African American version of Paul Baloff. Fuckin' Bombs of Death!
Katon is thanked in the liner notes on many cult demos/albums in the 80’s, guy is a total legend who was there from the start.
I hung around with Katon up in Cerritos, Buena Park CA 1986-87. Katon is 💯💯
Damn, he looks great for 60. I knew he was older, but I would have never guessed 60.
Great interview! Katon is Metal. HIRAX is definitely a respectable and awesome band.
@icankillbugs More importantly: Won't he ride my white horse? 😏
I remember a point where vinyl damn near didn't exist.
Definitely. When I was getting into metal in high school (98-02), vinyl was nowhere to be found, at least at the bigger stores. When it got popular again around the mid 2000’s, I was already heavily invested in CD’s. I didn’t really want start another format. Still a strictly CD guy haha 🤷♂️
Right! I remember stores like fye would laugh at the idea of ordering vinyl around 05 now look at them
Nobody gave a shit about vinyl from the mid 90's well into the 2000's. They were stashed under the tables in the record stores and were anywhere from $1-5.
@TechnicalBarbarity I was getting records for a few bucks. Now, a used record is like 7 times the price
Hell yeah hirax is great, holly crap man 60 and still thrashing. Dudes a inspiration, and a legend of the scene \m/
Hirax is awesome. The comeback stuff rules as well as the original stuff and Phantasm.
@@dinkins335 I've only ever heard the older hirax stuff. But I'm definitely gonna check out the other stuff soon \m/
@mikeviolate6207 the comeback stuff is really good. I've never heard anything with Katon that was bad.
Katon rules! He is a perfect example of someone that plays metal and is also a huge fan!!!! Phantasm!!!!hirax!!!!!
Katon rules!!!
Katon wasn't lying, you killed that one Dawg!
I remember playing Hirax at my old gas station job and a black guy came in and said "What kind of white boy shit is this?" and I told him to google the band and Katon and he just said "Well I'll be damned" and bought his gas and walked out 😂

Ha 😂👍
I saw Hirax with D.R.I. At union night club in LA 2017 I went solo and it was fucking packed
I remember on his Facebook livestreams when Covid hit he’d have a segment where’d he shoutout new bands he heard. The only band I could remember he shoutout was Morbidosdad. You could tell Katon lives Metal and loves it with every bit of his heart.
Very cool to hear Morbosidad got a shoutout, Katon rules!

Morbidosod absolutely rules.
And Katon if you're reading this please play stand and be counted, I'll forever be happy if you do that 😀
Fantastic interview!!! BORN IN THE STREETS, BORN TO DIEEEEEEEE
Fuck yea J-Dawg got into Hirax from the get thrashed documentary when I was 14 and saw them live with DRI a few years ago! Great band!!!
Katon is 60 now? God damn that dude really doesn’t look a day over 40. Hell yeah to another interview 🤘🏻
What's that old saying? "Black don't crack".

Katon is staying in shape. Great interview. Hirax is great.
Katon is one of the nicest people i’ve ever met and a champion of the LA scene
Absolute lad.
Hirax should be in the big 4
I would suggest replace Anthrax
Replace megadeath, Anthrax is actually good

Replace Metallica
Hirax is not "big" how could they replace any of the big 4?
I agree, only early Anthrax is worth listening to for me.
Amazingly wholesome interview
Super cool guy, I like when someone's able to be honest about things they dislike but still have a good sense of humor around it.
Hirax killed it at Metal Immortal, and Katon was cool as shit. Nice getting to meet you J. Such a badass night. ⚔️💪
Saw Hirax back in the 80s in San Diego CA. Katon is very cool 😎
