  • We're back with more Oathbreaker. This was filmed directly after last week's Oathbreaker game. So, it's essentially game 2 of last week's game. Although Kyle switched out his deck. Lets see how he does. If you want to learn more about Oathbreaker visit their website.

Signature spells must be *cast* from the command zone, they aren't *played* so you can't play the land side of Spikefield Hazard without houserules

Thank you Matthew. To tell you the truth we didn't even consider the land side not being able to work. We all just agreed it was cool and allowed it. Although I did just read through the rules and I didn't see anything that explicitly says they can't be played or have to be cast. They only state that they can't be cast unless a condition is met. The condition being having your oathbreaker on the battlefield under your control.
Here are the rules from the oathbreaker website that deal with the Signature spell.
906.4 Each deck has an instant or sorcery designated as a "Signature Spell". The Signature Spell must fall within the color identity of the Oathbreaker. This designation is an attribute of the card itself. The card retains this designation even when it changes zones.
906.4a The signature spell may only be cast when its Oathbreaker is on the battlefield under its owner's control.
906.11 A player may cast a Signature Spell they own from the command zone as long as the associated Oathbreaker is on the battlefield and under that player's control. A Signature Spell cast from the command zone costs an additional {2} for each previous time the player casting it has cast it from the command zone that game.

@@highpoweredhobby magic rules are permissive, they're going to tell you what you can do, rather than what you can't, because otherwise you get into "there's no rule that says a dog can't play basketball" territory.
So in this case, 906.11 would cover it indirectly, but 906.12a is much more explicit "906.12a If a Signature Spell would somehow go anywhere but the command zone or the stack, it instead goes to the command zone. This takes precedence over other replacement effects such as buyback."
Lands don't use the stack, and the battlefield is not a valid zone for a signature spell, which counts all faces as per 906.4 "906.4 Each deck has an instant or sorcery designated as a "Signature Spell". The Signature Spell must fall within the color identity of the Oathbreaker. This designation is an attribute *of the card itself*. The card retains this designation even when it changes zones." (Emphasis mine)

Well stated. The "there's no rule that says a dog can't play basketball" made me laugh so hard. That makes a lot of sense. We're about to make Joe very unhappy, lol. But as far as house rules go, this wouldn't be too terrible of one. I really appreciate your feedback on this. Thank you.
Another thing that's funny is that I didn't even notice until after the upload that Joe played his signature spell as a land this game without his oathbreaker on the battlefield. That was definitely not a house rule we agreed on. But if he hadn't had accidently cheated, I might not have had this great encounter with you, so it must have been meant to be.
