The Boxster at 25: An Homage to its Inception

- A quarter-century ago, at an economically challenging time, Porsche launched a groundbreaking model that would not only prove to be successful, but become one of the world’s purest, best-handling sports cars. Marking that milestone, we are proud to present the Boxster 25 years. This special edition model pays homage to the beginning, as explained by Porsche designer, Grant Larson, who has been involved in the Boxster concept since day one.

The boxster has always been Porsche's best kept secret. Non car guys who lust for status will buy a 911 but a true enthusiast has zero shame about driving a boxter because of it's amazing dynamics. Thank you for creating a legend.
Agree. except the cayman's nicer. I'm biased though.
Well said, I would love a Boxster.
I have the privilege of being the custodian of a 2001 Boxster S and I totally agree that they are such a driver's car with brilliant handling. It's the best kept Porsche secret ever.
I’ve had my 986S for almost 15 years. I love that car and it’s awesome to see Porsche continue to evolve the model. That 25 Year edition is gorgeous.
I was gradeschool when I first saw the Boxster and I fell inlove right away... 25 years now, I still want the 1st gen. Someday, someday I will have you.
Never seen anyone make a tribute to the original concept
That’s pretty cool
I was fortunate enough to own a Mk2 Boxster some years ago. A wonderful car, I still miss it. Here's to another 25 years, love the Boxster 👍👍👍
i've heard the Boxster get alot of crap for not being a 911, but the Boxster is truly special and i'll always love it
Growing up I preferred the boxster over the 911 ,I remember that ps1 game with only boxters, good time
It is better than a 911 design, mid-engine and truly limited engineering by Porsche because being better than the 911 is a no, no!!!
Excellent video. The Porsche Boxster is the fast and legendary vehicle that saved Porsche from economic bankruptcy. Porsche is the best vehicle brand in the world. Greetings from Chile! :) 🇨🇱
4:40 so all that history on the central exhaust and in this version it doesn't exist?
I know. A little anti-climactic.
The base model of the current Boxster does have a single central exhaust. This version is based on a Boxster GTS 4.0 which doesn't have it, but is a better car in many ways and with its flat 6 engine it sounds more like the old ones.
@@areknoid yes, and yet, the 718 boxster spyder has a central exhaust. Same engine.
@@silv3rArrow Yes, the 718 boxster spyder (it's actually just 718 spyder now) has the same engine but the exhaust is still moved away from the center just like this GTS-like anniversary edition. The previous version, the 981 Boxster spyder still had the center exhaust, not the 718 spyder.
@@silv3rArrow 718 Spyder also has a twin exhaust, with a deep diffusor tunnel between the pipes. My point was that the current Boxster still has a single central exhaust, just not in this anniversary version.
I have a '97 Boxster. Love everything about this car. Still so fun to drive!
its nice to see the Porshe still be with us
yeah it's really sad that bmw left us 2 days ago but it's really reassuring that porsche will be with us till the end of time.
@@ebonymaw8385 well that’s a new one on me!
Man, the Boxster is 25 and the 911 is nearly 60... time flies...
Fantastic 👏 Surprised it's not sporting a central exhaust though, especially after he emphasized that being important to the original.
Pinky Lai was a stylizing genius
Porsche got the Boxster right the first time. Happy Birthday Boxster.
It's also the Cayman's 15th anniversary
A 2.5 986 Boxster arrived last summer to my family. Such a fantastic car!
I remember seeing pictures of the show car in car magazines. It was the most beautiful car I had ever seen. Was a little sad when the production model differed but it was still a great-looking car. I will be buying one in the next few years.
Got a 2004 Boxster S a few months ago, best car I've ever driven
¿Anyone Are Still Remembering?
Need For Speed Porsche Unleashed
yes, that was my first game ever and i absolutely love it
lol this choldhood game is the reason why i always been a porshe lover and fan . its nostalgique and beauty . u can bring me any other beast brand . but porshe for me is more than a brand ....
One would think that making a racing game with only one brand of cars wouldn't work. The feeling NFS PU gave me for Porsche & cars is unmatched. Felt like going through the legacy of such a historic brand and being a part of it. Amazing
Yes, I played it 1999 I guess, on my father's PC. Great game with even more amazing cars!
@@skanderadrenaline4101 But you misspelling Porsche! Remember to write it like s*c*hool. In German we write a "sh" always with a *C* in the middle without pronouncing it. 😉😊
I forgot just how beautiful (and refreshing) the concept car was. The copper coloured highlights - particularly on the intake pipes and the propellors within the air vents were stunning.
It was truly a gorgeous concept car. Seemed light and delicate, like a Faberge egg.
Masterpiece
I love all Porsche, especially the Limited Editions. This is just a masterpiece, Bit I m also very excited about the next Heritage Design Edition
I can say I been driving the 986 Boxster 21 of those 25 years and still going..The Best performance car I have ever had in feel and sound. Amazing handling car.
My 99 3.2S has done 203000kms, and still feels tight. It's been very well cared for, and serviced at Porsche by myself and the previous owners, but after 22 years and all those kms it's hard to believe it's as old as it is. The design still looks fresh, the seats have no rips or cracks in the leather, the dash isn't faded or cracked, and everything still works; even the spoiler. And it never fails to make every drive an occasion. What a car.
This is just a beginning 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Beautiful! I had the opportunity to see the boxster concept in person at the Porsche museum in Stuttgart.
I love the how they tied in the details from the original. I do however wish they did some form of the center exhaust on the 25yr anniversary edition
I love his explanation of the centered exhaust pipe. Shame it wasn't applied on this version.
Love my little ocean blue 98 Boxster! Soon summer and the soft top comes off 😊
Love my 986
It's a dream of mine to own one of these cars.
I generally dislike central exhausts but this anniversary edition certainly would benefit from that design, especially after this content.
Enjoyed the clip as I enjoy owning the car. Its amazing. 25 years. It is fantastic how Porsche have so much confidence in the Boxster to allow it of recent years to stamp its own mark and make its mark in the design language of a great auto maker. For the Boxster to sit in that stable of cars like the 911 and be respected by so many is an awesome tribute to the people who conceived the original . . . . and those who continue its push into the future. Thank you.
Beautiful special edition car, so faithful to the Porsche brand and its roots.
My 1998 986 Porsche Boxster is a delight to own and drive. I've owned 356, 911 and 912 Porsches, I know the cars well, the Boxster is a fine successor to all of them, very basic, very high quality, quite fast, a real sports car, more like the light mid 1960's 912's in balance and sportiness.
Great Power to weight ratio, great driving dynamics, great styling, truly a Porsche
The show car is THE best designed Porsche. Perfect evolution of what was amazing, elevated.
Just shows the absolute devotion the company has to manufacturing the best sports cars and the respect that they carry....
Couldn’t swing funding one of these very limited 25th pieces, so instead, I decided to pick up a first year 1997 Boxster 986 in launch color Arctic silver over red. Absolutely fantastic little thing. Sad to know how so many trash talked these cars over yours. So nice to see Porsche give them the respect they truly deserve.
One drive and I knew the trash talkers were very wrong. So much more centered & agile than the 911 from the same year. The thing lives on rails & in hilly, curvy Tennessee USA, that’s perfect!
It’s weird hearing a German speak English with an American accent. Anyway I have been a fan of the Boxster for years and have owned 4 from the original 986 2.5, two 987s and currently a 981 Boxster S. Great cars and it’s great to see them getting serious engines now. I currently have an order for a 718 Spyder.
haha no :D he is actually an American with a German accent...
I've loved my Boxsters, great cars.
18 Thumbs down are kids, clueless of the design, marketing, profits and rewarding driving experience the Boxer flat 6 Roadster provided
Porsche, timeless.. See ya 25 years again.
Pure perfection. I am amazed how one construction could be freshly beautifull generation after generation for 25 years ❤️
Nice film and beautiful car!
The 10 dislikes are from the people who designed the Z3 😂.. boxster are awesome 👏
Ive had 10 porsches, the boxster is up there with my 951, C4s,, 911s, its special.
still looks good after 25 years :)
I was 15 when i bought my boxster, ocean blue metallic, 5 speed manual, 2.5L... forever my favorite car. I’m 18 now with a 987.1 cayman. but still miss my boxster every day
Wow you must have a well paid job - for a child.....
Oh I forgot, you’re a millennial....
@@PhilbyFavourites i’m not a millennial, i was born in 2002. And I started my own exotic car detailing business. My boxster i got as a good deal for 7k, and i saved up for my cayman which was 17k after tax and everything else.
Love my boxster
I have a base 986.1 2.7L and a 986.2 S 3.2L. I have nothing against the 996 911's. But I live by the mountains near Skyline Drive and I chose the Boxster and the fried egg headlights, I prefer their look. I will probably sell the 2.7 but I keep repairing and replacing parts so that it is much better than when I bought it. I compared the 2000 base 911 cabrio to the 2000 base Boxster that I have and chose it for the way it drives in the mountains. I'm not ashamed, although the 911 has appreciated more.
Really nice video !
25 years after...the first generation look so good...
I love my Boxster.... Every drive is a new experience filled with magic, good feeling, tremendous pleasure...it makes me hum all day long and really happy :-) !!! Happy aniversary ....Alles gute zum geburtstag !!;
I just love this brand! Porsche forever!
Would love to drive one, or better have one. Like all Porsche's it gracefully aged, but i still have a soft spot and a place in my heart for the Targa...
This modell saved Porsche. Of course it's important.
The mid engine roadster from Porsche is here to stay. I am totally infatuated with my "first run" 986. Every mile brings a smile. "The Stuttgart Grin".
Timeless beauty and the engine where it belongs
Well done. ⚘
Facepalm with that dual exhaust pipe at the end 😂
I was pretty much just born when the Boxster first came out. Loved it, esp with Need For Speed Porsche coming out
porsche is just something else ...more than just a car ...
This wont be the first time I watch this video! Love it! For me RS 60 Spyder is the best!
The interior on the concept car was brilliant, should have used that and the front end styling too...especially those air ducts
The Porsche Boxster died with the 718 when you made it into a flat-4 with a non-center mounted exhaust that sounds worst than a Kia.
I actually dont get it... He talked about how the central exhaust was a homage to the 550 an 718 and thats why the original boxster got the middle exhaust but the one important 25 years celebration model doesnt get the distinct desingn element... The rest fits very well though
I assume the Boxter25 is not a bespoke model but merely a special edition; reengineering the exhaust system would not be possible (or the development/production costs be prohibitively expensive)
@@mbanck yeah probably...
The actual concept still looks the best. But overall it's a great but pricey car...I'd go with the Cayman though over the boxster now.
911
@@JustGeorgeGG Ford Cortina
MkII....
Agree on the Cayman
@@williamjackson5357 yeah...when it first came out I was very skeptical of it but over the past couple year's it became one of my favorite Porsche models. The rare 930 turbo is still my favorite street Porsche however.
Love this car💗💗💗❤️❤️❤️
sooo coool
I got a blown engine with the first Boxster S at Stuarts Point in Napa Valley. Total engine failure because of not enough lubrication in the corners. Very fun car however in the twisties.
not just cool..... super cool!
Lucky to be the new caretaker of a CA car 01 986 S. A little tlc and she’s ready for another 20 years!
Wooooooow Magic
c'est trop bien un boxster j'aime toujours le mien de 1999 serie 1
Shorten up the gearing Porsche! and ill buy one!
Precious machine then, precious machine now...
Still waiting for a build slot for my 4.0 GTS in the UK.... just an estimate would be nice. It’s been a long while.
Great tribute, but doing away with the central exhaust was a major mistake. I love my 2013 981 Boxster S every day and never plan to sell it.
🙏
Boxer+Roadster= Boxter
Am I the only one that kinda cried at the end?
Why this Boxster25 is a 2.5T 4 cylinder in China? Why Cayman T can’t opt for a PTV? Why no manual models? Why no GT4 or Spyder? There are still some true driving enthusiasts in China, Porsche can not and should not ignore people like us.
Ha, I had the 986'th like.
986 is looking better every year
Mid-engine awesome car
Awesome, but he just said how important the central exhaust was to the overall design concept🤨🤨
Design is simple performance is high🚗
I had more girls take off their tops in my Boxter than I've had in my 911
Jus Sayin....
As a 996 and a 986 owner.. I can confirm.
I call BS. You can’t even spell boxster
Such a big fuss over the central exhaust only for the car celebrating it not having it lmaoooo
Mazda 😎
Ideally, this 25-year special edition should have been based on the entry level Boxster.
However, as a result of that erroneous decision taken in 2016 to equip Boxsters with four-cylinder engines, Porsche found themselves in a conundrum. How could they celebrate the Boxster’s 25th anniversary with a four-cylinder car? So, they have instead used the cheapest six-cylinder model, the GTS, which is not cheap at all and which shows up the ridiculous situation in which we now find ourselves- in order to access a new Boxster with a six-cylinder engine (essential), we are forced to hand over around 100,000 euros!
It is shocking to see how Porsche have pulled the wool over the public’s eyes by first launching the 718 GT4 and Spyder and then launching the GTS as a cut-price model, making it look like a bargain. This has worked, not only on the public but on almost every journalist who has reviewed the GTS!
To access this 25th anniversary edition in Spain, I would have to hand over at least 110,000 euros!
P.S. I have owned a 987.2 Boxster S since 2015 and I am interested in replacing it so I closely follow all the latest developments.
John, what you think about future prices for this limited car? future classics like 911 50th?
@@unkle321 I have no real idea, but I don't think that it's special enough. It's a tarted up version of the GTS. Engine output should have been raised.
To bad about those ims bearings on the older Porsches.
Porsche Challenge ps1
hi
I am on my fourth Boxster/Cayman and there will be more down the road.
911 have never engaged me as the Boxster, it is a Great sports car but they lack the fun factor imo.
I love the front I don’t give a fuck what anyone says
99k for a Boxster though.
Fuuuudge. Their pricing scheme has gotten totally insane. But it hasn't stopped them from selling cars. There is simply no option, no alternative to these vehicles. You walk in the dealership you know you are not getting value for your dollar. You have to know that before you even go there. It's like trying to go to Vail or Disney World and get good value. Not going to happen and you can't replace the experience so you pay anyway.
that's around the same price as a 718 spyder... but then again the 25 is not just any boxster
When u are to cool for a miata.
What is the gold wheel? Volk racing
All colors except silver...
