Oh, Carole! What a great vlog! I wandered onto UA-cam one spring day in 2018, and Vivmom popped up. I was instantly hooked on her joyful enthusiasm for sewing, and that is how I discovered the online sewing community. I love her so much! I am so happy you do, too!
I was shocked and amazed that you think about sewing in such detail to help fall asleep. Strangely, I thought only I did that! Haha! I usually ruminate about the next steps in whatever project I'm in the midst of sewing.
One time, when I was driving to visit my daughter, who lives four hours away, I passed the time by visualizing each piece of fabric in my sewing room, and contemplating various patterns in my collection that could work. I have a very large fabric and pattern collection, so this kept me happily entertained for about three hours!
I'm 59, and I loved your flick through of the old 70s books! I hated the color schemes even back then! But I do still have a fondness for the fashion silhouettes of the 70s!
I love your channel and the content you put out. You have nailed it! I love seeing what others make and how various patterns worked out, especially the big four, as that is what I mostly sew. I am enjoying branching out into some indie patterns (thanks to discovering them via the online sewing community), but, being in the U.S., I have such easy access to very cheap big four patterns. I know I could downsize and hack patterns, but like Viv, I am also buying the art and inspiration of the pattern envelope.
I love imagining and daydreaming about all the possibilities in my sewing room. And I really love the sound of my machine as I sew! I have always been in awe that we take a flat piece of fabric, chop it up into a bunch of weird shapes, sew them together, and end up with a three-dimensional garment! I think it is truly an art form!
Sorry for the long rambling comment. Your nostalgic vlog really struck a chord! Congrats, and keep on going! You are very loved!

2018 was definitely a turning point for us both! I have told Viv many times that she has been so instrumental in so many lives in regards to sewing. She changed my philosophy on wearing me mades and now I don't even think about it when out and about!
We sound so similar it is crazy, you said about turning something into 3D and that is what I had planned to say but didn't in the end. Who needs a 3D printer when you have us eh?!
I don't blame you sewing the Big 4 and actually although I envy your sales, when those patterns aren't on sale they cost a lot more for you than us. The Indies are just so expensive and it makes me cross at times how they hook everyone in with the fancy names 😂. I heard recently, if a pattern has a name rather than a number, you will pay double for it!!
How funny you like the sound of your machine, I don't mind my sewing one but I hate the banging of the overlocker and the embroidery machine 🙉.
Thanks so much for watching and I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. Happy Sewing 😊🧵

Carole, I'm so happy that I did come across your videos and I love seeing what you do with those Big 4 patterns. You often keep me company in my sewing room and I love that you are unapologetically you, which by the way is lovely. Congratulations on 2 years! p.s. Being told you're 'useless' as a child by a teacher is just criminal. Careless assessments like this stick with a person. I'm glad you did look her up and hopefully it reassures you that this woman was just an angry, unhappy woman in her own life and it had nothing to do with you. It's on her. Also, back to sewing. I'd love to see how you use your coverstitch machine and what it looks like.

Thank you so much for all your lovely comments! Fellow vloggers keep me company too in my sewing room, I don't watch much TV now. School was a very different place back then wasn't it and I can imagine a parents reaction if that happened these days. I am glad however that I did discover I was not alone recently as I always had that in the back of my mind whenever I sewed, but maybe that is what inspired me to keep going!
Re the Coverstitch, I did do a video really early on when I didn't really know how to use it. If you are interested I should really do another as sort of a year on. Thanks for the idea. Happy Sewing 😊🧵

Carole, I'm 72. I've sewn all my life from a young age. My high school sewing teacher, Mrs. Nix, must've been related to your sewing teacher. haha She didn't like me and I didn't like her. She gave me an "F" that semester even though the dress I made turned out great and I followed all the sewing rules she set forth. So glad to know that I am in good company with our former teachers! What a fun video, Carole! Loved seeing your makes from once-upon-a-time and hear you talk about your early sewing projects. My mother used to trace a butterfly or flower out of a magazine or book onto a piece of old white cotton (like a sheet). She'd then give me a needle and some colored sewing thread and let me sew onto the fabric. That was my intro into sewing/embroidery. In 2nd grade, our class had an assignment to get a troll doll (remember those?) and make an outfit for it out of felt. Boys also had to do this project. To this day I don't know what the lesson was supposed to teach us. Wasn't until I was in middle school that I actually made anything functional. First project for every girl in 8th grade sewing class (mandatory) was a draw-string bag for carrying our gym clothes to/from school on Mondays and Fridays. I have 7 sewing machines. Unfortunately, my Brother serger seized up last time I tried to use it, and may be more expensive to fix than to replace. After I move is when I'll look into getting it replaced. So happy for you that you've (almost) hit another YT milestone! Maybe you'll hit the 5K subscriber mark on your upcoming birthday? Wouldn't that make for a very happy birthday!?! 🎉🥳🎂🎈🎁 Hugs, Dori

We too had to make a drawstring bag I am sure of it, or maybe a book bag I am glad to hear that you have about the same number of machines as me, no one so far has admitted to me how many they have! Ooo a birthday present of 5k subscribers now that would be cool. It isn't really about the numbers, I am just glad my channel is still growing and I am still doing something right 😂.Happy packing! xxxx💗

@@socarole66 My father took me to the store to buy the troll. I one I chose had A LOT of bright red hair, so much that it couldn't stand up on its own. My mother cracked up every time she looked at the doll. 🤣 She talked about how ugly the thing was for years and years. Believe it was one of her favorite memories - my funny looking little troll doll. And would you believe I have a collection of the ones made in the 1960's tucked away? 😄 The dress pattern that we were given in 2nd grade was called "Mama Got Rocks". Don't recall what the boys pattern was called. I happened to find a troll dress pattern on eBay about 6 years ago. One day, I'll pull it out and make some clothing for it. Might have to do a YT sewing video for a FridaySews post! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Congratulations, Carole! I know you will reach 5000 before Friday, it’s so obvious that everyone just loves you! Looking through your books took me back to my childhood and beginning to sew, our story is similar to each other. Those little projects that you showed are still reverent today. I see people on UA-cam making that kind of thing all the time. Those jeans though, I do that godet in the legs of my daughter’s jeans, she loves that type of thing. All the old fashioned stuff is coming back in in fashion, so keep those books handy, you might need them. I must tell you, I love the fact that when I tune in to your videos, I know exactly what I’ll be watching, a great sewing video with a little crafting and a fashion show. I don’t mind a little variety, but some have taken it way to far, they are totally off the sewing bit. It’s good to know that it will never happen with you. I knew it before you said it. You channel is growing and of course, it’s yours to do with what you want, your viewers won’t go away. We love you, and will watch whatever you decide to do. Your confidence in sewing is totally improved to the point that you are climbing that ladder towards a more professional outcome. I know you don’t believe it, but it’s true. Thanks for the great videos each and every time, Carole. Take care and have a great week.☺️

So, I thought the hedgehog cushion was a mouse, but love it and that you still have it! I made a pincushion over 50 years ago and still have it as well, and also have my first sewing books. My mother sewed for us and made wardrobes for all our special dolls with little quilts from the remnants. She also saved remnants from my clothing so I could someday make a larger quilt but that hasn't happened yet 😄. I am sorry your sewing teacher's unhappiness was extended to her students but glad you persevered in sewing anyway. I am also leery of lining - did make a lined dress to wear to a wedding that turned out fine, though. I have used a tip from Threads magazine to line sweater knits with a knit mesh fabric so they don't cling where you don't want clinging and it works well but it's more like interfacing the garment with a layer of lightweight mesh knit than a true lining. You can cut my projects out - that's my least favorite part, although I do think about how I'm going to sew the item as I cut, so not all bad. My sisters and I all learned to cross stitch as children, first on old pillowcases where my mother drew x's for us, then on a sampler kit from a store. In the 70s we embroidered our jeans, cloth hand bags, jackets, etc. You could make that tidy hanging thing now for your sewing room 😁! VivMom is so much fun to watch! I sew Big 4, too, and a lot of patterns don't get onto Pattern Review, it seems and I am always looking for them somewhere to get an idea of how they will turn out "in real life." I don't think you will change the focus of your channel but this is a vote to keep it the same!

Thank you so much for your lovely comment and all the stories about your sewing over the years. Your mother definitely set you on the right path 💗. I know a lot of people say they don't like cutting out and I wonder if its because it is probably the riskiest part of sewing! Cut something wrong then that's it, with sewing something wrong you can always unpick 😂. Vivmom really is the best isn't she and I long for her monthly makes videos, I have bought so many patterns from watching her! One day I might just making one of those wall hangings.... It's always fun to hear another person's sewing journey. I am sorry your sewing teacher was so horrible. My teacher in high school was amazing. I started sewing very young, around the age of 4. My Barbie, Twiggy, and baby dolls had so many clothes I made them. I didn't use patterns, just designed my own ideas. From the age of 11 I started making clothes for myself. I think because I was so young, I had no fear to try new skills. The first time I lined something was when I was 11. I also think about sewing if I can't sleep. Some of my best ideas happen at that time. Viv Mom was the first sewing vlogger I discovered, she just popped up on my feed. Truthfully I would rather watch sewing vlogs than TV. So exciting, two years and still going great! I've no doubt you will reach 5000 very soon. I starting hand sewing when I was about four or five. Mostly stuff for my Barbie and my baby dolls. I didn't use a sewing machine until I was nine when I made a pair of shorts. After that I never looked back and by high school I was making almost all my clothes. My mother sewed all of my dresses when I was growing up, so I was very spoiled with pretty dressed that fit perfectly. She made my wedding dress and I made all the bridesmaid's dresses. I used to watch Sewing with Nancy and now I am really enjoying UA-cam sewing channels. Loved this, Carole. I had a small paperback book with projects similar to yours, but it has disappeared in the passing years. One of the things in it was a beach bag for a wet swimsuit. I think it was the first REAL project I ever made .You cut a plastic bleach bottle in half and set it in the bottom of a tubular bag with a drawstring. The bottom was gathered shut with a string in a casing, pulled tight and knotted, and the top with a long drawstring. I smiled when I saw the jeans in your book. I remember cutting the side seams of a pair of jeans and inserting lavender colored wedges on which I had hand embroidered small, white. daisy like flowers. I think I was about 13 at the time. I felt so cool. LOL Thanks for the memories! 🌼🌼🌼 Bernadette

Hi Carole. Start with a rectangle that will go around the circumference of the container, leave seam allowance. Make the length at least 2.5 times the height of the container. Make a casing on each end leaving openings to insert the drawstring. Sew the length of the rectangle. You should have a cylinder shape. Insert the container, and draw up the drawstring as tight as you can tying a knot. You could secure it to the bottom of the container with hot glue if you wish. It should now look like a drawstring purse. Insert the top drawstring. I hope this helps. I'm not tech savy enough to insert a diagram, which would be self explanatory. Good luck!

It’s been a fabulous two years getting to hang out with you! I’ve learned a lot too!! Happy 2 yr anniversary and you will pass 5000 in no time!! I love all of your videos, loved looking through your books, those dolls were so creepy but we all had them didn’t we? I a 74 baby so I’m sure mom sewed me some of those types of things😂 I wish I still had my “makes” from Home Ec class😂 putting a garment together in my head has put me to sleep a few times- it’s relaxing ☺️ it would be fun to see you. Make that wall hanging or one of something from the books 😊Thank you for all you share with us everytime! Here’s to the next year🥂🎉

Those dolls in the book were so creepy but when I look into today's shops and see those soft animal toys with weird, sparkly, huge eyes I think they are creepy too 😂. I love that we both think of sewing when trying to sleep, do you plan makes on journeys as well? I really do need to make that wall hanging don't I, even if I made it for one of the Grandkids, not in the 70s colours of course 😂.

The styles and bright colors in your books bring back memories of childhood crafts and learning to cross stitch and embroider. I still love to do those things. But, like you, I have become addicted to sewing . I find myself looking at clothes on other people and trying to figure out how they were made. This is especially distracting when I am in church! I’ve never lined a garment but it is on my list to line a bodice this year. 🤞Apparently it’s quite straightforward? 😳
Your ‘memory lane’ books were great. I can remember making a bean bag frog although I was really hopeless in my school sewing class. Just wasn’t interested. How I wished I’d paid attention then! Sorry Miss Jones (my teacher).
Thank you for your sewing vlogs Carole, week in week out. It’s a lot of work and I, personally, don’t expect prizes when you reach milestones. Your weekly sewing guidance and showing us what you’ve made, what worked etc. is reward enough. Sorry this is a bit lengthy. Have a good sewing week. 🤗

Hi Carole, I really enjoy your videos and this one brought back lots of memories. Luckily I really liked and admired my sewing teacher in high school. She wore the nicest clothes you've ever seen. She was only probably 4 ft 9 and very petite but she looked fabulous, always in a classy suit. I often think I would like to sew like her. I'm not sure why but my most difficult thing is committing I think. I bring my fabric and pattern down to the dining room table and I swear it sits there and mocks me. It takes me inner strength to lay it all out. Once I start to lay it out, I'm fine ... strange 🤪. I also think of sewing if I can't sleep. It's soothing. Thanks for your videos.

I remember clearly a teacher (Mrs Prior!) when I was 9, she must have been crafty herself as we did canvas embroidery purses and little knitted pincushions in class, as well as making animal masks for a school play. Ooh, I’m feeling so happy just thinking about that time….! The next teacher was the old school dragon though and scared the life out of me 😂. Thank you so much for all your videos and I hope you reach 1000 subscribers very soon. Karen x

Hi Karen! Thank you so much for finding me and I'm glad I brought back some memories for you even though your second sewing teacher was a dragon like mine 🤣. It didn't stop us though did it! We were so lucky to have had lessons in our younger years where the teachers were much more able to do free sessions like craft etc and sewing. I also did some in Primary school and my Mum used to come and help 🥰. Now everything is so structured and scheduled the kids will miss out on things like this. Happy times eh? Thanks for watching 🧵😊

Carole, This video brought back a lot of memories. Not as you may think, but you are the same age as my daughter. Only difference is, when she wanted something, I made it for her. She wouldn't sit still long enough to make anything for herself. I don't remember her learning to sew in school, but my grandson did. He is now almost 30. When he was in school, he had to make himself a pair of sleep shorts and he made a stuffed doll because they had to make a baby toy. He made it out of one of his old baby blankets. Thank you for the walk down memory lane. I hope you reach your 5K subscribers very soon. I love watching your channel and your pictures and videos of your family that you often share. Oh Carole, you and I share very similar sewing beginnings. I too fell in love as a child and still have my first Simplicity book. I never sew with Indie patterns. Mainly because I don't know how to print the PDFs and the whole process sounds dreadful and expensive. Big4 for me! Also the 70s are my favorite decade for fashion. I do enjoy the other decades too. You should definitely go back and sew up some of those cute projects in your book for your grandchildren. That would be a real treasure! Have a great weekend. ❤‍🩹

Yes Grace, PDFs are dreadful AND expensive but every now and again they go and print a pattern I like and then I am pulled in their direction 😂. I had a real nightmare printing off a Love Notions top this week, my printer's fault but it didn't make for easy work.
We did indeed have the same start by the sounds of it 💗. I really should sew at least that wall hanger for maybe one of the Grandkids yes! Thanks so much for always being there xxx😘

I love those books. Those little projects are adorable! You mentioned loving topstitching. I do too! What I hate is a zip fly front zipper. I just put one in a pair of cargo pants. The pants had turned out so nice, THEN, I came to the infamous zip fly front. I must have ripped out seams 6 or more times. I had done it right down to the the zip fly front top stitch, and discovered I had made a wrong move several seams ago! Out it came again. Ugh! It's in now, that's all I am saying. When I finally finished it (the correct way-I think) The waistband is 2 different levels in the front!!! It will stay that way. I love all your videos-keep putting them out. I too am addicted to sewing-even when things go wrong. 🥰

Hi Theresa, snap! We both love topstitching! You are the second person to mention about a zipper and dreading it. Sounds like you had an absolute nightmare with that fly zip though, I have had the old waistband misalignment challenge many times 😂. I normally try and alter things by hand stitching! Just wear all your tops on the outside and don't tuck things in.
Thanks so much for still watching and enjoying my videos, they will keep coming as long as I am sewing and I have done that for 50 years 😁. Sewing is the best addiction to have in my opinion, you get something out of it at the end! Have a great week 😊🧵

Really? I would have thought you would have thought of sewing a tee shirt instead of an a-line skirt, out of blue fabric of course. Lol.
I've done that before too. I don't have the sleepless problem too often unless I'm upset about something. But I have definitely done the same thing. I don't have a set thing I sew in my head although it usually is a dress. It really does clear the way so you can go to sleep. Except the one time I got so excited about what I was making in my mind, that I couldn't sleep from excitement and wanted to get up and sew it. Lol. Luckily I sew in the bedroom, so I couldn't get up because it would have disturbed my husband.
