Thank you, Sally,I do wish you well with this career path, and I think you are and will succeed. For me, I have tried several ways to make money from my sewing and I always failed because of marketing, I found that a skill all of its own, which I just didn’t have! It was so stressful for me and took all my time, with little return and often meant I had less time for the things I loved, sewing and sharing that with other people! I do think today, there is more help out there, like skillshare and people are becoming more knowledgeable about social media, so I do wish any one well who wants to follow this path. ❤

It is difficult I know, it’s a whole new learning path and I think it depends on how much you enjoy the marketing side too. Thanks so much for your well wishes xx

I was actually at a craft fair this morning. There were so many lovely handmade items, but i didn't see many people actually buying anything. In this world of cheap items from internet shopping, many people just don't want to spend the money on quality items. It is sad because that handmade item will last a long time, not so much the mass produced cheap item. I run a small alterations business. I had to make sure I was charging enough money for my time and skills. But i don't want to overcharge, it has to be affordable for the client. I've oftern thought about starting a UA-cam channel, but just not sure i want to commit to the hours it would take. On the other hand, i would be learning new tech skills. And continuing to learn is vital as we age. I think it's so kind of you to share the ways you've earned money from your sewing.

I completely agree about craft fairs I think sites like Etsy are better as people are generally expecting to pay handmade prices there. If you want to do UA-cam you don’t have to commit to anything just start small and see how it goes 😊 x

My best thoughtful advice that I've taken was to read the book, start with why by Simon senek. Beautiful bookbthat helps shy creatives. Being confident and knowing and loving what ypu do and why you do it is what communicates to a consumer. That consumer wants you. Wants what you create. In a way, you reflects them back to them and they hand you the money for what you sell. There will always be consumers who want the cheap and Nasty product. Always. Know wand make what you want because you know your why.....the consumer will follow. I loved his book. You can do anything in this crazy world!!

Unfortunately people don’t pay what they should for handmade items. They don’t take into consideration the time, effort and good quality material spent on those items.

Hi Sally, Thank you for sharing your ways to make money through sewing. I have been sewing for over 50 years, and this is my God-given destiny. Of the different ways to make money sewing, I have made money with my 2 etsy shops, ebay, my own website, affiliate links, teaching, craft fairs, custom sewing, alterations and contract sewing for clothing stores. The ways to make money with your sewing skills are many, and we are all unique to our own crafting abilities. I am always looking for new ways to generate income through my sewing since this is my main source of income. 😊 Happy sewing

Very interesting! You must never sleep! I’m always so impressed by your tidy and well organised sewing space that is also your dining room area, it seems. I’ve been thinking about using Etsy to sell items so definitely tempted to view the Skill Share course on this. And it’s been suggested that I teach, but have minimal qualifications, so only helping friends at this point.

Teaching is a tricky one isn’t it. It’ll certainly be the scariest thing I’ve ever done 😂 I hope the Skillshare course helps x

This was an eye-opening video! I teach sewing face-to-face but had not considered some of your other ways to earn income from my skills. Thank you so much for sharing. I'd love more information on setting up a UA-cam channel or monetization of my Social Media posts with affiliate marketing. 😊

Sally, thank you so much for making this video. I found it very interesting. I'd like to make money from sewing but I worry that I would be turning my wonderful hobby into a job and the joy it brings will disappear. Your video did give me some things to think about. As someone whose only posted one thing on Instagram ever, I have a few hurdles to overcome!😂

Yes that is definitely something to consider and part of the reason I gave up my Etsy shop! I’m glad you enjoyed the video 😊 x

Very nice information! I would love to make garments with comp fabrics from fabric stores. I am currently doing that for one company, but I’d love to do more. I apply everytime I see it is open. I just need to fund my expensive habit! 😂 I have a lovely career that allows me to do what I enjoy while wearing my makes! If I were looking to earn more money, this video is a treasure of information. Well done. Your content inspires me and provides me so much joy. Thank you.

I’d love to work with what I love or have more free time. Unfortunately I don’t have anyone to pay my bills and the money I’d make sewing, for example, wouldn’t be enough. Once I was out of a job and I started making some tote bags and I sold some, but that money is no way near the money I needed. Glad there are people out there who have partners that can support them while they work with what they love ❤ Thanks for the video.

You can work on building the money up, it won’t happen overnight and it’s not always the case of having to have someone ‘pay your bills’. Working on your own business is truly hard work x

Hi Sally, what are SEOs in an online store? I'm in the process of setting one up (mostly produce bags and related products) and don't know the terminology.

Search engine optimisation so words to use in your titles and descriptions that will help people find you when they are searching for your products or similar 😊 x

@SecretLifeOfASeamstress oh thanks. That's funny, because just a minute ago, a pop up came up while I was working non my website asking if I wanted more information on creating them. I thought they just went on by themselves, and I guess they do, but aren't as good as the ones we can come up with ourselves. I think my computer was listening to me when I asked you about it.
