Chris Motionless is one of the coolest and nicest guys in the scene. He’s a stand up person with incredible character. If you have any beef with him, it says more about you than it does him. Looking at you, Mr. Radke.
They did the whole “metalcore to radio butt rock“ transition better than literally most bands in the scene. Explains why they’re more successful than ever and still super popular
They have butt rock songs (like Masterpiece which is literally Breaking Benjamin) but they also still put heavy and rich metalcore songs (like Undead Ahead 2, Timebomb, Slaoughterhouse) unlike Wage War who only do buttrock or boring heavy repetitive song, they don't make ambitious metalcore track like Motionless In White does
This but with don't forget their music is a mix of Marilyn Manson & Evanescence with elements of Korn, Linkin Park, Breaking Benjamin, AFI & HIM, have aged way better than the rest of their peers as they were unfairly lumped with trash and were one of the first Evanescencecore bands
I’ve seen them 5 times and every time the music gets better, the shows get bigger, the performance gets louder and ultimately, they stay amazing. The growth just makes sense and I’m so proud to see a band who I saw in tiny club shows to playing amphitheaters and stadiums.
Motionless was a band that I did not hear about until 2018. Once I did, I was hooked by all of it. The steady progression of their sound and refusing to stick to just one theme is refreshing. Listening to bands like Motionless in White, Bring me the horizon, Wage War, Bad Omens, etc. allows me to be moved through all my emotions. It's not just heavy anger and angst. I love that rock and metal bands are starting to do this nowadays because it felt like that type of music was growing stale in the 2010's. And this is coming from a lifelong Metalhead.
It’s crazy seeing their progression each album. Chris creates the most catchiest choruses of all time and the songs are still heavy. Great band that keeps getting better.
Another thing i think is overlooked is the fact that they broke one of the key rules of a successful band, and that’s maintaining a stable lineup. They have gone through so many member changes and still somehow every member that has come in has managed to build a following within the fanbase. even their new bass player has left a mark on their music and fanbase and he’s played on i think 2 albums (i feel like that’s wrong, so correct me if i am). A lot of bands who have that high of a turnover often fall out of relevancy.

I remember hearing "Ghost in the Mirror" off of a label sampler in 2009, then I gave Creatures a listen when it came out in 2010. I fell in love immediately. Even though I love many albums by many bands, Creatures holds a special place in my heart. After that I went back and listened to their even earlier stuff. And as the years went on, I listened to every album, and loved them all. I waited through two bands at their stage at Warped Tour 2012 just so I could be in the front row for Motionless, and I almost passed out by the end because I got dehydrated, but I sang every damn word of their set. Something that I absolutely love about Motionless in White is the fact that they reinvented Gothic Metalcore and refined it to the point that there is this almost romantic quality to their sound in certain parts. The core of their sound is so sincere and Chris has definitely improved his vocal range so much that it is extremely poetic and wonderful. His gutturals and clean vocals are equally beautiful.
This is pretty impressive. I’ve seen them perform and they defied my expectations. It’s insane to see the variety in their work. They appear to be a net positive for the scene.
Till this day they are honestly my favorite band. For many reasons. I started listening to them when they wernt really known and i was really struggling through a lot of shit at the time but their music and they people that they are truly got me through my shit. Even now, when im dealing with stuff, i throw on their music, and i can just handle pretty much anything. Ive seen them live 5 times just themselves along with tours of them and other bands. No matter what, every show is insane. I will remember each one.
The thing is about Kim Dracula is that he's influenced by the same bands Motionless is- Manson, Korn, and many others. I was excited to see you mention Kim. Dude is genre vomit in a great way, but he's not for everyone. I have seen Kim live and it was a blast! Motionless has quickly become one of my favorite bands. I'm seeing them for the first time this Hallowen and I CANNOT WAIT!
I saw them on tour last October with Knocked Loose and you know, I've seen hundreds of shows and that show was hands down the BEST SHOW I HAVE EVER SEEN. I personally, as a 2000s emo kid, live for theatrics and the costumes and the makeup and the themes and they really just fucking nailed it. Getting to hear Slaughterhouse live with Bryan was just...I doubt anything will top that honestly.
I didnt think I'd like anything more than Creatures, but Scoring the End of the World is amazing through and through. I don't know how they're going to top that.
Perhaps their heaviest, but I think Finn's overall point was that from an objective standpoint the songwriting and song structure in following albums were more defined and cohesive, with more diversity and melodic elements to attract the attention of more than just the Warped Tour/metalcore scene.
I was so taken aback by you referencing attack attack for the synths😂 you’ve been around forever I would think you’d be able to hear the clear Bleeding through/Eighteen vision/It dies today vibes in their early era. For fucksake the synth intro to Billy in 4 C is the same as the synths in the breakdown of Bleeding throughs “love lost in a hail of gunfire. Also infamous is the start of Chris collaborating with others on writting. Up to that point he wrote everything himself. I loved all the elements they blended EXCEPT FOR THE BREAKING BENJAMIN THING. So their new stuff is very hit or miss for me 💀
When disguise came out in 2019 I was so happy to see what new stuff Motionless In White had to offer. I ended up absolutely loving the album cover to cover and went to go see them in 2020 for their first tour with that album being new and got to hear dead ahead to the tail of the midnight ride Crowd was the first crowd to hear that song and it’s entirety because the people in the previous show which was the first show pulled the fire alarm during their set Beartooth and motionless, were cohead lighting the tour, but motionless was closing for the night and they absolutely smashed it. Chris is such a freaking good artist and really good singer And the dude is a solid front man he’s got so much energy!
Seeing them live at warped was insane. The stage presance, audiance command, and musical talant was freaking ridiculous. They got my buddy who was mostly into rap, into the pit ready for blood. It was wonderful to see
Listening to Motionless In White really influenced me, and I hold their music very close. I remember being young and struggling with feelings of incompetence and confusion with regards to "life", but listening to their music helped me embrace myelf, cast aside doubts, and reflect on exactly who I want to be. Im no closer to being unafraid of "life" but I still feel a deep sense of confidence when I hear them, and their music reminds me to have strength and compassion when my imposter syndrome gets the better of me. They are my all-time favorite music artist, and I hope the music they create continues to communicate their unapologetic dedication to being exactly who they want to be.
From Stockholm to Scranton, still here, still standing!!! Hearing that live in Scranton in front of a huge crowd is something else. The crowd screaming it back is just crazy. Five Seven Oh \m/
You should have mentioned the song *"Meltdown"* (from 2024) becaue this was the song that totally blew me away the most I think it has the heaviest and grooviest instrumentals (guitar) of any their songs yet, it almost sounds like a 7-string guitar (not sure if its just a 6-string with special effects)
To see bands like MIW and INK go from these bands I’d see live with like 10-20 people max in the crowd to seeing them headline a sold out show in my hometown on the Trinity Of Terrors first leg to THEN headline arenas is just so damn cool. It’s much deserved as these guys have worked their asses off to get where they are. I also remember seeing them around the video for America came out in Des Moines and Shawn of Slipknot was in the crowd, since he directed the video it makes sense, but still it blew my mind at the time.
Scoring the end of the world has to be one of the most fun and enjoyable metal albums imo, i have a great time listening to it while it still feeld very fresh and interesting every time Also necessary evil is one of my favorite songs of theirs, im glad finn gave that one specifically a small shout out!
So many people wanna shit on MIW for numerous reasons, but these boys were INFLUENTIAL! Especially in that 2008-2012 era, which is my favorite. My favorite band of all time.
It’s funny how you mentioned Infamous having industrial elements in it. Marilyn Manson’s influence on the album is clear. I can’t hear the chorus to AMERICA without thinking of mOBSCENE.
I appreciate that you are covering some more current bands lately that have members in their 30s and are still releasing relevant music (I know they've been around for 20 years). It's refreshing when you tell the story at the midway point instead of the end.
I have been an incredible fan of theirs since the release of "Creatures" and I absolutely love their wonderful brand of incisive creativity and brilliance. They continually fascinate me and blow me away with their intelligence and talent. They are extraordinary people.
Their first demo is crazy, and I kinda wish Finn would have mentioned it. "Trace Out the Heart" is kind of a banger even though it's really rough and barely recognizable, but would have killed it with the 2005 emo kids if it was spread around more.
Played with them when they were still playing at fire halls in PA. Can’t believe what they would achieve. Hung out with his brother many times. Pretty wild to think about.
They have definitely aged like fine wine. I went down a UA-cam rabbit hole & found Reincarnate not long after it debuted. Been a "Creature" ever since. And yes, I loved that post by Chris too. Still do.
"five seventy" had me in tears. i always read it as "five seven zero/oh" cuz its supposed to reference the first 3 letters of the phone number for the area of PA theyre from and where im from too
Thank you for making this video! They are one of my top favorite bands, starting with the Ghost in the Mirror song off their first album. And they do just keep getting better, while staying true to their original sound. Love it!
Love your content thanks for all the great videos Finn🤘 I did not listen to a ton of MIW before but now have them on repeat. Can you do a Like Moths to Flames video next?!
I was 10 when I found motionless, I am now 22, they have been my favorite band and partially shaped who I am as a person which is kinda weird lol but im glad it happened
I saw them at a small venue in NC in 2010 and while not knowing of them going into the show after they performed and got a chance to talk with Chris for awhile and he was the most down to earth genuine dude I had ever met. Have been a fan ever since.
I happened upon them merely by a 'right place right time' coincidence. I was in my junior year of high school, when I was starting to fully get into the metalcore scene, and we were learning about 'The Crucible' in my English class. I somehow stumbled across the music video for 'Abigail,' and HAD to get the album ASAP. I had to buy it from Hot Topic, because nobody else had it. What a wild ride this band has provided since then!
It's crazy that Finn is calling the keyboard parts they took from Bleeding Through and credited Attack Attack. That's insane to me. They're so explicit about Bleeding Through (like Eighteen Visions) being one of their big inspiration.
I met Chris after a show in Owensboro KY around 2008. We talked for about 30 minutes. He is a genuinely nice guy and so soft spoken. It's crazy to see the success they found in the last 15 years.
100% agree with everything you cover. MIW is one of the only bands (alongside FIR) that I still enjoy from my old scene days. The main reason is because they continously evolve their sound and provide variety. An album where every song sounds the same gets stale very quickly and what I love is the that every song sounds like it could be from another artist. Also I love that one of Chris main influences is Breaking Benjamin which is one of my favourite all time bands. I can hear a lot of BB in them. Stocked to see them next year in Madrid!
Another great video . I seen them in New York with H.I.M back in 2015 I believe? Either way I do remember them being a great band and I actually hung out with them up in the balcony and watched H.I.M set with them. Nice guys on and off stage. I highly recommend you check them out live. Powerful music. And Fin , thanks again for sharing information about this band I had know idea about.
Seeing their growth since 2009 is crazy. I remember talking to him on MySpace and he would take the time to explain the lyrics. It inspired me to write and I sent in lyrics for Creatures (I think they did use them!). He’s truly a humble guy and they all deserve the success they have achieved!
I've got a story about Motionless in White. I saw them in 2019 at Aftershock in Sacramento CA. They not only sounded AMAZING Live, Chris Motionless is a frontman, he got the entire crowd going and he even said "On your drive home, put on our new album Disguise, its your soundtrack for this festival in the parking lot". Later that night, my friends and I where trying to get to our hotel room to meet up with other friends and as we walked to the ride share section, we passed by the parking lot and everyone was playing Disguise
You pointed out that they were doing the goth/halloween/black paint stuff and thank you for that. They were one of the only bands in the scene doing that and their image set them so far apart from all the other bands and gave them an identity that was pulled off just right. Chris is a smart guy, there is a reason they’ve done so well and exploded the past five years.
yeah, 'how do they do it?'' I mean, it's just like you're saying. Everybody likes them. Me include. And to me they gave me the renewed unholy blessing I needed. I think the fact we see these bands becoming trendy and huge now, are part of the same 'new rise' of all the alt, goth, emo, punk-like type of music we see now - which runs (today, jsut like it did during the 90s) parallel with the mainstream trend now, which is like a modern version of the 90s. We even have mainstream pop artists having a go at pop-punk songs - some that are qutie good. I mean, it's just awesome seeing many from the new Gens - teens and young adults, getting into it, and joining us older who never left or stopped being or wearing all Black-on-Black, giant boots, pitch black hair, wearing pentagrams, and crazy dresses as their casual wear.. It almost bring forth a tear in my eye seeing younger people having found and going all-in on whatever is their niches - punk, avant garde, goth, etc. Seeing that it's in good hands and got a future as bright as the moon lights up the night.
This video is going to be like a Bible or guide for me, like others you've done that I deeply connected with for different reasons. I'm super inspired by artists who do their homework; artists that can combine and wear multiple influences into their own thing. I'm super into artists who can morph really well into new things and never lose fans, but actually reach a wider demographic, especially a demographic that normally never pays attention to that artform. I'm super into artists who can be accepted/ respected both by the scene and outside the scene (crossing-over). All because I hope to be like that one day as an artist! Thank you for this video! Little things like this are responsible for shifting your whole perspective, and connecting dots in your head that are life-changing.
If you’re looking for new video content (I sound like a marketing wonk using that word) to branch out into, may I suggest a few topics? I’d be interested in hearing about your take on: Psychobilly , Goth, Death rock, Dark wave, Neofolk, Queercore, Garage punk, The Mod Revival , No wave, Madchester, The post punk revival, noise pop and cow punk. Something about the role of art schools in shaping alternative culture would be interesting, along with a video about what killed off alternative culture and how the internet has made everything part of the mainstream.

Even now, when im dealing with stuff, i throw on their music, and i can just handle pretty much anything. Ive seen them live 5 times just themselves along with tours of them and other bands. No matter what, every show is insane. I will remember each one.
I've met them twice during album release meet and greets at Gallery of Sound in Wilkes Barre, Pa. They are really humble down to earth guys.
Nobody knew that. Now people know.
I saw them on that tour too and can 1000% confirm your opinion as fact
After alpha wolf and knocked loose played I was too tired to enjoy MIW but they were really good
I didnt think I'd like anything more than Creatures, but Scoring the End of the World is amazing through and through. I don't know how they're going to top that.
I still think Creatures is their best album
Perhaps their heaviest, but I think Finn's overall point was that from an objective standpoint the songwriting and song structure in following albums were more defined and cohesive, with more diversity and melodic elements to attract the attention of more than just the Warped Tour/metalcore scene.
Facts
@@kawaharaizumi731also good points
That’s because it is😂
It is really good, but I say that their newest is the best.
You should have mentioned the song *"Meltdown"* (from 2024) becaue this was the song that totally blew me away the most
I think it has the heaviest and grooviest instrumentals (guitar) of any their songs yet, it almost sounds like a 7-string guitar (not sure if its just a 6-string with special effects)
Miw is still one of my favorite bands that i listen to regularly. It's been a while but i really need to go see them again.
I believe there are some spooky stories around the Mars Volta and the use of an ouija board. Could be an intetesting topic...
Scoring the end of the world has to be one of the most fun and enjoyable metal albums imo, i have a great time listening to it while it still feeld very fresh and interesting every time
Also necessary evil is one of my favorite songs of theirs, im glad finn gave that one specifically a small shout out!
For once, Finn actually makes sense while he's talking about music.
Amazing!
Became a fan of this band the first time i heard "America". They put on a good live show. Great Video Finn
I appreciate that you are covering some more current bands lately that have members in their 30s and are still releasing relevant music (I know they've been around for 20 years). It's refreshing when you tell the story at the midway point instead of the end.
Great video my friend. I also think that live show they did at Pennhurst was incredible.!!
I have been an incredible fan of theirs since the release of "Creatures" and I absolutely love their wonderful brand of incisive creativity and brilliance. They continually fascinate me and blow me away with their intelligence and talent. They are extraordinary people.
Excellent breakdown dude that was outstanding definitely worth the watch and listen... bleigh
Listened to their first demo a LOT. It’s pretty rough but it fits the vibe.
Their first demo is crazy, and I kinda wish Finn would have mentioned it. "Trace Out the Heart" is kind of a banger even though it's really rough and barely recognizable, but would have killed it with the 2005 emo kids if it was spread around more.
It's time for a 311 video, Finn.
I second this
KKK? ;)
Ditto
That and a (hed) p.e. One
True rock n roll stories literally just made a video about them 2 days ago.
Played with them when they were still playing at fire halls in PA. Can’t believe what they would achieve. Hung out with his brother many times. Pretty wild to think about.
I was literally thinking about how I wanted to know more about MIW
Thank you for doing a video on one of my favorite bands of all time! Excellent Video
They have definitely aged like fine wine. I went down a UA-cam rabbit hole & found Reincarnate not long after it debuted. Been a "Creature" ever since. And yes, I loved that post by Chris too. Still do.
"five seventy" had me in tears. i always read it as "five seven zero/oh" cuz its supposed to reference the first 3 letters of the phone number for the area of PA theyre from and where im from too
I've been a fan since Creatures debuted. I'm so happy to see them gain popularity so much.
Thank you for making this video! They are one of my top favorite bands, starting with the Ghost in the Mirror song off their first album. And they do just keep getting better, while staying true to their original sound. Love it!
This was awesome to watch love Motionless and love your stuff…good shit bro
To me, they sound like a "spookycore" version of Breaking Benjamin.
I was a huge miw fan from 2009 - 2014, this brings back memories
Love your content thanks for all the great videos Finn🤘 I did not listen to a ton of MIW before but now have them on repeat. Can you do a Like Moths to Flames video next?!
I was 10 when I found motionless, I am now 22, they have been my favorite band and partially shaped who I am as a person which is kinda weird lol but im glad it happened
It would be awesome if you do one video about Asking Alexandria and what went wrong with them, awesome video as always 🙌🏻
Great walk through of their albums. I'm a casual Motionless fan; I like Disguise but have not explored their other albums.
I saw them at a small venue in NC in 2010 and while not knowing of them going into the show after they performed and got a chance to talk with Chris for awhile and he was the most down to earth genuine dude I had ever met. Have been a fan ever since.
I've seen MIW 9 times and honestly I go to see how much better Chris and everyone has gotten
It also has a very Devil Wears Prada style to it, specifically Danger:Wildman sounding.
Attack Attack! Made it popular
I met Chris after a show in Owensboro KY around 2008. We talked for about 30 minutes. He is a genuinely nice guy and so soft spoken. It's crazy to see the success they found in the last 15 years.
Very cool to hear! Do you remember what y’all talked about?
Motionless is my time favorite band. As a fellow Pennsylvanian I think it’s super cool to share a state with my favorite band!
It's not "Five Seventy" it's "Five Seven Oh." It's the area code for North East Pennsylvania (NEPA)
I found them in 2010, and I've liked most of their work since. Chris is also a really really cool guy.
I’ve been waiting for this video since I started following you a few years ago
yeah, 'how do they do it?'' I mean, it's just like you're saying.
Loved MIW since I heard creatures back in warped tour days. Been my favorite band ever since, can't wait to see them this Halloween!! ❤
Creatures drums were some of the best from the production and fill stand point. That snare is legendary.
I love MIW so muchhh, I have been listening to them since 2013, literally fav band ever
If you’re looking for new video content (I sound like a marketing wonk using that word) to branch out into, may I suggest a few topics? I’d be interested in hearing about your take on:
Psychobilly , Goth, Death rock, Dark wave, Neofolk, Queercore, Garage punk, The Mod Revival , No wave, Madchester, The post punk revival, noise pop and cow punk. Something about the role of art schools in shaping alternative culture would be interesting, along with a video about what killed off alternative culture and how the internet has made everything part of the mainstream.
