Hot rodding hasn't changed all that much....either you have money, time or space. Hopefully two out of the three. I'm single so i just ditched cable TV (history channel doesn't find the things they're looking for 90% of the time and Motortrend TV is 90% reality TV--why watch someone else wrenching when I should be in the garage) to put money towards cars. If you own space (never rent, it sucks money out of the budget and the landlord can sell your rental and you get 30 days to pile decades of parts scrounging somewhere else) then you can nab a crashed Hemi pickup, sell off what you don't need to make it near-free, and use the rest. but you'll need time for that accomplishment. Or skip the Hemi BS, nab a chevy 350 for cheap and nitrous it and go fast in a car like this. of course, if you decided to have a family, well....that's its own reward. Or so kept getting told by friends with screaming kids who want me in their misery :) no but seriously, where there's a will there's a way, and back when I rented, i bought other peoples' work. sometimes i got a deal, and sometimes i had to fix all their problems. that was before youtube videos, so i bought used books to guide me and got my tools for half price at estate sales (back when you could turn in a broken craftsman or LL Bean item and get a new one free no questions). the good thing about "blank check hot rodding" is there's enough going around to fund companies like Year One and race part companies like wilwood, baer, etc to invest in hot rod parts for the 9 second guys out there.
You know I was asking another UA-camr about swapping a Hemi engine in a car/truck other than a Mopar .. and ever since then I’m seeing gen 3 Hemi’s being swapped into everything .. guess everyone is getting tired of the LS swapped everything .. lol but nice project can’t wait to see finished product !!
@@FloridaDave everyone has gone trew the ls. they used to be cheap now the cost more than a big block . its a gbody everything fits in there . ive had a caddy500 in one with the stock hood
It's because if it was an LS swap it would take 15 minutes... It could literally be done in one short episode... This way they can get 6 videos out of it...
I think the first time I saw McGann in a car video was when Hot Rod picked up a black 1971-2 Malibu and put a blower on it to prove it was affordable to slap together a street machine in a weekend. The affordability of A bodies even then was questionable, and I thought, "geez, why not nab a G body instead? room for any engine, a perimeter frame to hold the torque, and they're affordable". And so here we are.
If I had a car like this, I'd make it into a nice little hot rod altered wheelbase high set straight axle leaf and coil spring suspension Gasser Drag car.
My mom had a 85 Cutlass. It was white with Maroon interior. The car was super nice. Some guy hit her and fubr'd that car. Could have been a super nice resto build.
It took me 2 years to change my T Type from Powermaster to Hydroboost. I can extrapolate that the work in this video would take me approximately 250 years to complete.
I have a 84 El Camino and want to put a panhard bar on it any ideas on brand or one made for it. 67 Chevelle 327/350 373 gear and 700 monster transmission in it now
Any one for a G-Body g-bodies were made by all the GM brands regal Grand Prix Monte Carlo and Cutlass it will fit any one of those cars. They were all the same suspension.
U must not have an 86/87..... No matter what u do or don't do a real 86/87 gn hold value..... That's a squired taste type car.... I love a regal really one of my faves but a 86/87 gn I'll love for life lol
its $8 grand with out the brakes ,9 inch, or wheels and tires for the qa1 kit ! UMI Performance Stage 4 Handling Kits ABF807-2-R is 4k add the brakes and 9 inch for 4k and save 8k ! for what these guys do i can do for 1/3 the money and have a better car . look at bill from src his g body is at 10.6 s with a 2k viking setup and a 355 with a 150 shot !
and that front suspension was used on Chevy S10 trucks if you ever want dropped spindles or better brakes. some folks even set the frame up for 4x4 action with the weaker olds 307 engine and and Blazer trans/transfer box. Grand National websites have a lot of junkyard tricks, like hydroboost brakes from Astro vans and a rag joint-less steering column out of jeep wagoneers for header clearance and brake upgrades with Camaro SS and vette stuff you can nab from crockauto. and the gas tank, the V6 models had TBI so if you need a gas tank for a V8 model you're converting to EFI, that's the tank to buy (don't know if they mentioned that in the video, couldn't get that far)
@@GregHuston I can believe you. Of course, sometimes handling upgrades depend on the driver--a good driver can make a set of sticky tires on a Honda do amazing things. And of course a G body without the F41 suspension is a road-pillow. But even with that taken into consideration, what you say makes perfect logical sense based on my own experiences. These don't have to be expensive rebuilds for a street machine, and when these things were common on dirt racetracks around the country, they also did very well with OEM parts in order to fit class rules--no wilwood brakes etc.
Putting a Chevy engine in a Buick it’s a sin get the turbo 86 six cylinder and I’m sure if you know what you’re doing you’ve seen what they can do Jerry Mcdonogh
Its GBody or No Body....My first car was a 86 Regal with a 307. It was blue on blue with the 15 inch Rally Wheels. I've owned 6 G Body cars since 1994 the Regal and the Olds were my Favorites. Someday I will build my Dream Regal or Olds GBody. Ls or 454 454 backed with a Tremec 5speed or maybe a M22 Rock Crusher 12 bolt rear. The wheels on this car are FuGUGLY A set of Craigers or Keystones would have been better even a set of Stock 15inch Rally wheels look better than what is on it...those wheels Ewwww.
@@diegop2311 I know man. There is this quest for performance and everyone has their different way to approach it, but does it mean you have to sacrifice the authenticity of an iconic car ? I bet those guys would never do it to a JDM superstar car or a European golry. It's just lazy thinking and planning, but I guess being the first to the finish line is what counts.
In less than 15 minutes, they bolted 4 of my paychecks to that car….. wish it was that easy
It is if you have a TV budget lol
Just save 4 paychecks bruhh, forget rent and family.
@@SavageBunny1 they just bolted 20k on it . thats 20 paychecks for me !

Right
Ain’t no gbody without Oldsmobile!! Lol 💪🏼🏁
Always will love the body styles of those.
I drove one of these once . It was bagged on Dayton wheels . Was all factory body an interior. Just a sweet ride
Love a lowered g body!
I love g body cars the first 2 I bought were El Caminos they saved my back alot of stress loading the bed with go carts and minibikes
Minnesota has such a great car/hot Rod culture.
CAR CRAFT! I MISS car craft magazine :( want to see the brand return, even as a video series.

I haven't been keeping up and I noticed all the hemis all of a sudden, too.
I wondered if maybe Mopar came up with something more revolutionary. 😂
Front suspension is the same as 2-wheel drive S-10 pickup. Opens up your options for bolt-ons.
"Yeah, we'll be happy to rebuild your suspension! But first, we need to slap this HUGE decal on the rear flank!"
Great build so far!
myyyy favorite buick forever
QA1 need to start making some Harley shocks!! They would looks good!!!!

“We’re gonna LS Swap it….”
*Awkward silence… 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I'm curious why this didn't land on MTOD. John is fun to watch build and learn from!
That 307 could be a fun project motor. Bet it can make 400 hp gross easy.
You forgot Oldsmobile Cutlass. It was the number one selling car in the US in 1980, 1981 and 1983. It was GMs top selling G body.

Dang Jon, no love for the Oldsmobile Cutlass built on the g-body platform?
Some part numbers would be nice

Yes sir
88 was the last year for the gbody
Didn’t know Costco sold red loctite!!
Specifically what steering box did you put in the car?
What's with an AD every 3min?
Where is part II? I know it was being built for Drag Week 2022, but that has come and gone.
What was the back spacing on the rear wheels???
B.S. on rear wheels?
Motor trend as great video content on UA-cam and on their Tv channel
they dont usually come with 231 that was an option
wait did i see 2 different style wheels on the front???
It needs more rear tire
What's is the wheels off set
Must be nice not to have to worry about a smog test.
"Must be nice..." move then nobody's making you stay miserable
It is nice... 😎
Why did you change the wheels
I had an 85 with a 355 rocket NOTHING could touch
Am I missing something, those front rims don't look right. Like they're black anodized and the rears are chrome.

Should've thrown some pumps and switches on it, there's more of a market for that than hot rodding it.
Trade my 87 Grand National for this car!

How is it that this isn’t even on motortrend on demand. Why do I even pay for it if they don’t have all of their programs on it.
Lowrider people waiting on you guys to put hydraulics!
Big facts! It's low and slow I'm my 85 Monte
