Hi Chloee. That's a great question. No, I don't think you need a background in accounting to start. I would say that you need a certain type of personality - focused, methodical, can follow instructions, and wants to learn.

Thank you for this advice. Although a certification is not required I’ve noticed some employers require them. What certification would you recommend a US based bookkeeper obtain?
You can get certified in QuickBooks Online - it's free. Sign up for a free QuickBooks Online Accountant account and you get all the training and certification for free.
@@amarievargas80 I'm not sure what training you looked at. Intuit does not charge for training. Their QuickBooks Online Accountant program, training, and certification are completely free. I've taken their free training and webinars.

Is it recommended or required to carry insurance in case books were not properly recorded
Yes, I recommend that you carry insurance. I also recommend that you have a solid workflow in place to ensure that you are doing everything that you're supposed to be doing for your client every month. I have a system for ensuring that my employees follow all the steps and a system for ensuring that we review all our work so that it meets our high quality standards.

That is more of a legal question - whether you should obtain an LLC or operate as a sole proprietor. Look for resources through your state's department of revenue or Secretary of State's website. Do you prefer Quickbooks online or the desktop version?
From a business perspective, I prefer QBO because it's much easier to work with clients no matter where they are located. I do wish QBO had as much functionality as some versions of QBD.

Some people have a hard time finding a job as a remote bookkeeper because they lack work experience. I would encourage you to focus on the value that you bring to a potential employer - enthusiasm, ability to learn, self-starter, etc.
