In this video I talk about the differences between bookkeepers and accountants including: schooling/certification, how much bookkeepers/accountants get paid, differing roles, and how they work together.

      Great explanation, thanks! - Let me tell you, I am from Dominican Republic and I work for a company based out of Miami, FL. At my job doing bookKeeeping is one my tasks, I've doing it for more than 3 years now, I do it with Quickbooks online, and I want to ask you, what do I need to start my own company to offer bookkeeping services from my country to USA customers?

    Just one thing to add. The vast majority of accounting grads do not become CPAs. In fact only about a third of all grads become a CPA. Only a third of all working accountants are CPAs.

Thanks in advance!

    • @FinePointsBookkeeping

      Hi Tiffany! Great questions! I can add these to my list for future videos, but the short version... I think that $35-40/hour is a reasonable rate to charge in most areas in the U.S. I use the hour tracking function in QuickBooks to track my hours. After I complete work for a client, I can enter the hours I worked and assign it to a client. Then, at the end of the month I can make an invoice with all of the hours and email it to them. Hope that helps! I'm also looking to provide fixed-rate pricing for my clients--more info on that to come as I test it out. Take care!

    Most accountants I know are not tax experts. I'm going to be an accountant when I finish my bachelor's NOT a CPA. CPA in most places is generally 150 relevant credit hours ...... which is a masters and then working for a year. You do not have be be CPA to be an accountant. This kind of misinformation is why I keep seeing jobs posted for $20 an hour asking for CPA and 3+ years experience. Here is a hint most accountants won't work for that low starting off much less a CPA.

    Hi Morgan! I was wondering if you could do a video on payments and papers and how you manage that. Do you get physical checks at your home or a PO Box for your clients? I have a client that does not like direct deposit or auto-pay anything, and prefers physical checks. How would you handle that and all of the paperwork from it? Thanks!

    • @FinePointsBookkeeping
      @FinePointsBookkeeping  4 роки тому

      Sure! Do you mean bill pay for the clients' expenses (utilities, etc)... or how a client would pay you for your fees.

    • @cheltsiejohnson8932
      @cheltsiejohnson8932 4 роки тому

      FinePoints I mean like for the client himself, for all of his expenses and bills, he doesn’t like it to be on auto-pay. He wants to pay it himself each month (never usually on time). And for his invoices he bills out, he doesn’t want the payment for it to be direct deposited into his bank account. He prefers a physical check to be deposited. He’s very old school if you can’t tell, which makes my job more difficult. Any advice would be so helpful!

      @FinePointsBookkeeping  5 років тому +3

      Hi Tracey! Thanks for watching! That's a great idea for a video & I'll add that to my list to make. But, A LOT of my clients have been word of mouth. I let my network of family/friends know that I'm a bookkeeper and put it on social media and I was able to find clients that way. You can also post your business on job websites (like craigslist) or answer posts for "bookkeeper needed" there. UA-cam is also a way that I'm able to market and gain credibility. One other idea would be to reach out to small businesses in your area and see if they are needing help. I've found that there are tons of businesses who need bookkeepers. Having a niche also can be helpful because you're more marketable and specialized (for example, as a bookkeeper for doctors... then you could approach Dr. offices). Hope that helps!

    This video is really misleading to the audience. Whilst you perfectly explained what kind of services might bookkeeper offer, you limited the accountant only to tax practices. There are various ares in which an accountant may specialize in such as auditing, advisory, management, taxation etc.
    Its always advisable that the bookkeeping is done by a licensed CPA in order to ensure that the bookkeeping is done in line with the relevant accounting standards. When it comes to complex transactions the bookkeeper usually does not have the proper tools and the know-how to solve the problem.

      I think this is a valid point, but I don't agree a CPA is needed to do bookkeeping. The key is proper training and the tips Morgan is providing in this youtube series put anyone well on the way to gaining this training. Also I woudn't want the lack of a CPA certification to hinder anyonedrom starting their bookkeeping business. In short there is more than enough room for both types.

    • @jamespainter8274

      This is for public accounting, not private accounting. People who hire accountants internally pay normal salaries which can still be quite good, but those working in public accounting charge their clients a fee per hour. I've see at the firm I work at that we charge around $200-$600 per hour based on level of experience ($200 per hour at associate, $400 at manager, $600 at partner, etc...). There are different segments to public accounting and she kind of generalized accountants as a one size fits all, but there are really a lot of specializations to get into. For starters, not all accountants are CPAs, but all CPAs are accountants. You don't need a CPA unless you are required to sign off on an audit (you don't even need one to file taxes, you can be an EA or just register with the IRS for a PTIN). You do need one for most public accounting companies if you want to be promoted to manager or above though. In public accounting, there are segments for tax, audit/assurance, and advisory. You can make around $55K starting off and make around $250k-$300k as a partner when you first get there, but some senior partners can make $1-3m per year at the biggest firms.

    • @FinePointsBookkeeping

      Very cool! Your question is more of a legal one that I'm not really qualified to answer. :) I generally teach that you start your own business and then get Errors & Omissions insurance that's designed to protect you. If you're an employee working for a company, I would think you are covered under them. And yes, an accountant has more schooling and are held accountable at a higher level.

    Actually, there is a lot more certain properly trained 'tax inclined' bookkeepers can do. Including depreciation, writeoffs and even preparation with the required IRS and state certifications. I'm not sure how many CPAs even do tax preparation. Most tax preperation work is a specialization that most bookkeepers(and accountants) are indeed wise to "farm out". However, calculations, depreciation, writeoffs, and even retirement account info are something a highly skilled bookkeeper can have ready for the tax preparers.

    I am trying to decide if I want to get my Accounting Certification, associates, or bachelors. I noticed online that a lot of the jobs available for a bookkeeper require a degree. I just do not want to go into debt getting a bachelors if it is not necessary but then how do you get your foot in the door?

    Many accountants here do almost entirely bookeeping plus regular taxes (not advising or strategy).
    But others continue with a tax masters or law degree wich is only 4 years with no bar exam and muuuuch lower income than in US as a consecuence)

      Queeckbooks aren’t as common In Europe. It is Sage, in South Africa it is Pastel (bought out and renamed into Sage as well). Then they have MS Dynamics and SAP financial modules. There is litterally a multitude of smaller niche software programs created for different markets, industry and countries to suit their regulations and tax. But in a nutshell they follow similar design - logical flow as QB or Sage

The course may look a little different then it does in this video due to QBO recently updating the course. If you're looking to invest in your training, Morgan really like Bookkeeper Launch. Here is a video Morgan made on why she likes this course (ua-cam.com/video/dUrjJy1ersw/v-deo.html). Hope this helps!

    3:20 yes, the main reason is that accountants have studied the theory, so they set things up to be in compliance with GAAP. Quarterly taxes are usually a thing unless the taxes owed are less than $1000. Then the IRS won't really give you a penalty.

    My state has a program to pay for certificates in various in demand fields. They have bookkeeping and accounting as options, among others. After watching this and a few other videos, I'm wondering if it's even possible to get a job with an accounting certificate. It seems like that would just be step one in getting the education I'd need to get an accounting job. Whereas with a bookkeeping certificate, it looks like I could get a job immediately. Or could I get a bookkeeping job with an accounting certificate? I don't know. If you can clear up my confusion, that would be great. If not, that's fine too.

    A smart move would be to obtain an EA or ASFP on top of bookkeeping work and completely limit the need for a CPA… Don’t get me wrong… learning tax is tough but a seasoned EA can and will outperform a CPA any day of the week… I call EA,s the Swiss Army knife of tax.

    I've watched a few of your videos, and although you have good content, there is often misinformation in them. Just to clarify, what you're describing as an Accountant is actually a CPA. Put simply, a bookkeeper enters transactions. An accountant does the same as a bookkeeper, but is also qualified to produce and interpret financial reports. A CPA does the same as an accountant, but also has taxation and audit knowledge and can offer more in the way of interpreting financial data. To become an accountant, you don't need many years of schooling. You can obtain a 2 year degree (Associates) or 4 year degree (Bachelors). To become a CPA, you need more credits to qualify to sit the exams, which translates to an additional 2 years or so. Once you pass the 4 CPA exams and become licensed, THEN you need Continuing Education credits to maintain your license. This means you have to be up to date with any changes in financial laws and tax codes. Just an FYI, I've been an accountant for 20 yrs and started the journey to becoming a CPA. I hope this helps!
