    My touch typing journey:
    WPM before touch typing: 45
Started to learn touch typing during mid August
    WPM during August 2020: 30
    WPM during September: 45
    WPM during October: 50
    WPM during November: 55
    WPM during December 2020: 65
EDIT: I just hit 113 wpm on a 60s test on monkeytype as of 3rd June 2021 :)
    Current WPM: 115 wpm
I use monkeytype, tenfastfingers and typeracer now. I learnt TT from typingclub and keybr when I was a beginner. I didn't really type much during Sept/Oct/Nov, got demotivated.
Also to beginners out there: it's going to be a rough path at the start, some people just give up. Keep practicing, you'll make progress for sure. Make sure to take breaks too.

Remember it will be with ups and downs. At times you will fall back in speed but maybe a week later or so you'll make a jump to new highs. It's just like you said, just practice daily 5 minutes and you'll be amazed at how fast you will improve. But after 70WPM it will go slowly, at least for me.

I wasn’t allowed to use computers often until late middle school and early high school, so I am just now learning how to type properly. I’m decent at pecking (I use like 3-4 fingers on each hand) but it’s just not fast enough for me.
So I’m just using the proper typing method for everything except my urgent essays to force myself to learn. UA-cam comments (yes, this one), chat messages in online school, discord, etc. Hopefully I’ll get better, I have a long road ahead

Keep up the practice and when you get tired push yourself, BUT don't push yourself too much! With consistent practice you will get used it and the muscles/tendons in your hands wrists and arms will help. While it's not the best analogy, think of a runner preparing for a marathon. They increase little bit by little bit.
Also stretch! I talked about this in my second typing video but you can also find a bunch of wrist and forearm stretches online. I'd recommend looking up, like, "wrist stretches for artists" since that might get you the best result

Learned to TouchType in about 3 weeks. Went from ~40 wpm ("pecking") to 14 wpm after about 3 days. After practicing in only keybr for about a week I got to 30 wpm and 80% accuracy. After the second week I was at like 40 wpm, but I felt like I was typing faster than that. Then I realised I was pressing backspace half of the time, loosing most of the gained speed. Then I just worked on my 80% accuracy. Now it's been about a month since I started learning touch typing and I'm at ~70 wpm and 95% accuracy and 60 wpm with punctuation and 90-93% accuracy. Not nearly near my goal of 100 wpm with punctuation with

Before learning touch typing, my speed was around 40-50 wpm (measured on keybr)using hunt and peck with index and middle fingers of both hands.
Once I started learning touch typing, my speed dropped to 20-30 wpm (measured on monkey type and keybr).
Now after practicing a lot for 2.5 months, I am at around 75-80 wpm with 95-97% accuracy (monkeytype with punctuations, numbers, with 2 minute sessions).
I think by the end of 2021 (today is Oct 10, 2021), I might hit 100 wpm. I just need to give it more time.
My dream speed is 190 wpm with 100% accuracy.
What worked for me: To practice hitting the keys right, for the 1.5 months, I allowed myself look at the keyboard and only hit the key with the correct finger.
I'm 22, I wish touch typing was taught as a skill to all computer classes in schools from kindergarten (rather than teaching shit like: this is a mouse, this is a keyboard, this is a monitor....).

I have around 115 avg wpm, but I have some bad habits, such as never using my pinky and some keys not the recommended fingers. How important would you say it is to re learn the basic fingerings? Also in some games that I play (league) I have deep ingrained habits of using my 4th finger on Q, so do you have any advice for me?

    • @markbacon78
      @markbacon78  3 роки тому +1

For a very long time- and sometimes I still go back to this habit- I only used two fingers on my right hand and all five on my left. I believe this is what allowed me to go from 140 to 160. When I made the switch to using four fingers (not thumb) on my right hand, I dropped way down but as I overrid the muscle memory, I got there over time. Personally, as a result, I think it’s super important, and the more you practice- and the earlier you start to relearn this fingering- the better 🔥
As for League, I personally only use my left pinky for the left shift button. Try to relearn the fingerings, but if you have to compromise, then compromise! I don’t use the exact proper fingering, but what’s important is that you don’t have one finger covering half a keyboard. It’s all about what works for you.

here are some things you forgot to mention in this video(I understand it's not easy to include everything):
    1.reading ahead:
this is one of the least talked about but important skills, when you want to reach 120 wpm on average(or more) reading ahead is an important factor,at 120 wpm average reading 1 word ahead is enough, but if you can do more that's great(you have to for like avg 170 wpm )
2.typing word by word instead of letter by letter:
again if you want to reach 120 wpm on average you want to be typing word by word instead of letter by letter,as an example if you want to type mountain don't type m o u n t a i n ,instead think of it like a piano cord, you should drop the hands on the keyboard and mountain should appear, don't worry if this doesn't happen at first, and you can start smaller, you can break up mountain into moun and tain (also at speeds likie 160+wpm you should increase the chunk from 1 word to 2 words to as many as you can handle)
3.not typing every word at the same pace:
once you are trying to get 100+ wpm you should think about that you don't have to type every word at the same pace,if there is a word with many uncommon characters slow down to avoid making a mistake.
4.have separate times to focus on accuracy and raw speed
5.this is just a thing to be remembered:
progress is not linear so don't be sad if you go throw weeks or even months before you made any tangible progress.

I've been using keybr for 3 days now, and for about 4 hours in total, and it really highly changed my writing speed and very quickly, I went from 70 top speed with the way I've been writing to 20-30 in the first hour of learning how to write with 10 fingers ( I was using 6-7 fingers before ) and in the second hour I finished learning the keys and started practicing them and getting used to it, in the third hour top speed then went to about 40-50 wpm and in the fourth hour, i kept doing it over and over and reached about 65-70 wpm average.
I also reached 90 wpm top speed, I can guaranty the best website TO START is keybr.com, the way it helps you learn the placement of the fingers, the way it keeps making you practice specific keys etc, if you want to learn touch typing, start to keybr.com :) I am now still practicing my speed to reach about 90wpm average and then I'll focus on my accuracy ( I'm thinking about 10fastfingers where you actually have to delete what you wrote if you messed up etc.. ) Anyway thanks for recommending these websites :)

There are also low profile mechanical keyboard, though they are rarer than the "regular" ones. I also really like the elevated keys as it helps on hitting modifier keys like control with your palm instead of fingers, so you can press control without having your fingers move/move as little as possible from the homerow.

All right, trying out mindful touch typing. I can currently type at about 20 WPM without looking. 2 weeks ago I was still using only my index fingers. Up until now I was using tipp 10, which is especially good for beginners because it has lessons where it slowly introduces new keys.

Those plateaus happen- find ways to push yourself! In my latest typing video I go over some methods to do that. One thing would be to start typing to your reading speed. In other words, force yourself to read fast so that you type to catch up. Chances are you'll start making a lot of errors- good! 🔥 Keep pushing yourself and you'll find ways to catch up and thus improve.

Hey, I started learning touch type on October 2020. On day one I was typing normally(not touch typing) at 19 wpm, I was extremely slow. After one month of practice on keybr I got to 27wpm touch typing. After another month of practice on 10 fast fingers i reached 45 wpm. After December I had a lot of school work so I practiced rarely but I reached 60wpm. One week ago I finished school so I started practicing again and I reached 77 wpm on 10fastfingers with 96% accuracy and 70wpm with 99% accuracy. The secret: practice and focus on accuracy.

    • @markbacon78

It happens! 10 Fast Fingers actually has a mode (it's the hard mode in the top 1000 words challenge) that stops the test when you make an error in a word. It stops the test and shows you what you got wrong. While it's frustrating, it's what helped me with accuracy.
Another thing would be to just purposely slow down. Build up the muscle memory at a slightly slower pace, then as you build up see when you start making the errors (i.e. at what relative speed the errors begin). Work on that a little bit, push a bit faster... rinse and repeat!
      Hope that helps 🔥

Have you ever thought of trying a new keyboard layout - like Colemak or Workman? Goods tips btw. I've been touch typing Qwerty for about a year now and it's really helped me out. I was pretty fast with my own method, but the correct fingering has made my hands feel better and move less - and I'm now a bit beyond my old speed (~100wpm). I've also done some experimentation with "optimized" keyboard layouts. They are interesting but I'm still not convinced they are worth the effort - not to mention losing your Qwerty speed in the process.

    • @markbacon78
      @markbacon78  3 роки тому

I think they're worth it in terms of speed typing, but I don't personally think it's practical. I ended up typing fast just because of how much I was typing, then after I pushed myself did I become faster.
How I think of it is, if I go somewhere (i.e. a work place, a friend's house) and want to type fast, there is an INCREDIBLY good chance they have a qwerty keyboard, so I just stick with qwerty myself. So all in all, I think it's cool if you want to use another layout and compete in that category, but otherwise I don't personally think they are worth the effort (for my goals). Thanks for dropping the comment! I great question 🔥 Keep up the good work

In the past 2 months, I have gone from not knowing how to touch type to having an average speed of between 70-80 wpm, where my highest ever score was 89 wpm. My improvement has started slowing down a little, but my average is still going up. The way I learned to touch type was pretty different, but what I did was look up a touch typing map which pretty much just shows you which key corresponds to which finger and then I forced myself to touch type for school assignments or work (online), it was really slow at first, and I had awful accuracy, but my speed and accuracy both got up quickly and I usually get between 96 to 98% now, I mainly use type racer and 10fastfingers to practice, as well as nitro type from time to time, and I am able to type on both a mechanical keyboard (pc) and a membrane keyboard (laptop). Honestly, it is one of the most useful skills I have ever learned and it has improved my productivity and quality of work by a large margin, I feel like I came across this video too late, but it was still an interesting watch, either way, good luck to everyone who’s typing journey is starting here. Hope, you enjoy it as much as I do.
Edit: I just hit 90 wpm on type racer on a short text, I tried it again, and I got my first 100+ wpm with 100% accuracy

    • @markbacon78
      @markbacon78  3 роки тому +2

Keep up the practice! And hey, have a look at where you came from to remind yourself that you ARE improving. One big thing is to type at your reading speed.
I go over this in my later typing video, but essentially as you're doing typing tests, don't read while you type. Try to read ahead and let your fingers catch up to you. If you start making a bunch of errors- good! It means you're pushing yourself. When we get stuck in these plateaus, we simply find ourselves in a comfort zone. We must push ourselves out of that, and in this case that means reading and then typing to catch up to that. Let our reading empower our typing versus our typing hinder our reading (since virtually everyone can read faster than they can type).
Hope that helps! Let me know how it goes 🔥
