Am over 60 and was using hunt and peck for nearly 40 years, at a speed of about 25wpm. Decided to learn to touch-type a few months back. it was very hard to change but am now touching speeds in the low 50s. So it's never too late!
All... I woke up this morning thinking how cool it was that I could lowkey expect 20 views on this video that I uploaded last night. Seeing 180+ views so quickly was such a good start to the day, haha. Thanks all so much for the support! End of term coming up so more content coming at ya 🔥
Thanks for these tips! I appreciate that you went into a lot more detail than just "Home row, practice a lot" like some other UA-camrs do. I just started practicing touch typing this morning, using keybr and I'm SO slow lol. But I'm already seeing progress just after like 20 minutes, and with these tips from your video I'm sure it'll go even faster. 50 wpm, here I come! Jk, I'm aiming for higher than 50 lol. But I'm only at like 35 wpm right now, so 50 is the next milestone. Ultimate goal is more like 100 or more.
The milestone mindset is a good mindset to have! Always good to keep track of your progress as you go because at the end of the day... it is just practice haha. Super glad you enjoyed the vid, thanks for dropping a comment! 🔥 Keep up the good work.
@@AxlefublrMain Thanks! Yeah once I learned where the keys are, I ended up switching over to 10fastfingers and I've gotten a lot faster. Right now my average is right around 50, and my best is 67 WPM!
Cool! I learned to "touch type" in high school in 1973 but I lost it all over Christmas break. After that, I just tried to type as fast as I could and as accurately as I could any old way I could. Practice is everything so after doing this for several years I was able to get my average speed up to over 50 WPM (sometimes as high as 65 WPM), BUT I ALWAYS have to be able to see the keyboard. The advantage to this typing "style" is that I can also type with only one hand, almost as fast. But it still feels awkward and is not as fast as I know I could be. I miss the feeling I had when I was touch typing of being able to hit all the right letters without even thinking about it. "Remapping"??!! You mean breaking "bad" habits? Now that I'm retired and I have a new MacBook I've decided to take another crack at learning to touch type. Since my old custom way, still using most of my fingers, works well enough, I'm being strict with my training, focusing for this first week on the "home row." Once I can hit all of those keys without even thinking I'll move on to some of the other rows, carefully and deliberately. I'm convinced that the "home row" method has become traditional because it really works, so I'm sticking as close as I can to training my fingers in this method. It's NOT hard to do, but it's REALLY hard to break the old habits. I'm looking forward to being able to actually type in the dark.
Remapping == breaking bad habits, yes :) I just don't want to impose anything being necessarily bad... but it is if you want to type "properly" I suppose! Homerow certainly a good place to start in general. It's funny because I also type worse in the dark, but never look at the keyboard when it's light. Maybe something with peripheral vision, I haven't thought much about it though. Thanks for dropping by the video!
just because of some few videos like this i watched, my average is 130 wpm and i can burst as quickly as 150-210. the only issue is that you have to adapt with switching to more fingers, that's the hard part. i keep coming back to this video for some reason, but i pretty much have to because this is one of the things that still keeps me going.
Haha, that's so awesome to hear! If it fuels you, let it fuel you. Adding in more fingers is definitely tough, especialy since it's really about overriding that muscle memory at the end of the day, but at some point you'll see the progress and it'll feel great. Keep up the awesome work! 🔥
@@markbacon78 thanks, although i think i'm done switching to more fingers. 9 is enough, i use all of my fingers except my right thumb. the only thing i'm really learning is how to use my right pinky for the letter 'p', but i think i got it down already.
Pretty sure most use a comfortable combination between pecker and other fingers. Basically which finger is most conveniently placed at the time. I'm learning home row, but it's not very convenient even after a couple of weeks of practicing, but what it did do is improve flexibility and changed my normal typing a bit, so it's more varied and I guess faster. So yeah, it's not only about completely learning it, even if you just practice it a bit sometimes, your typing will improve automatically over time.
Thanks for making all this informative content, I was at 80-90 with just 2 fingers and have come down to 50-60 since moving to this method but I’m sure my speed will increase more now.
just started with keybr , monkeytype and typeracer couple of days ago and im progressing pretty fast hardest part was / is pinky but it took me around 6 hours of actively typing in keybr to get use to using them , what i want to say is dont be scared of trying to learn it doesnt need to be months until you get to you previous speed im around 50 WPM at this moment.
Wow, this is the only touch typing video I've found which is entertaining, funny and helpful all at the same time, and also doesn't brag the whole time about how fast they can type. I started actually focusing on trying to type faster about a week ago and since then I've gotten a best of 77WPM with the peck method (which I uploaded to YT if you want to see it), but after being told by multiple people on Discord and in person, I decided yesterday to start trying the home row method. However, most of the other videos I've found waste your time by telling you seemingly in the longest way possible that touch typing helps and it will save you a lot of time, however this video is the only one I've found which actually explains how it's faster and doesn't waste your time (sorry if this comment does exactly that) or make you want to click off, so thanks for that. Also, this video is the only one I can remember which says that it's normal for people to be really slow when they first start touch typing and then they get faster later, which really helped after I tried a typing test using touch typing and got 22WPM and felt like I was wasting my time also I used pecking to type this comment
I'm so glad you connected with the video in that way! Hopefully more typing to come, but all in all I intend to keep that attitude in my videos in general haha. If you can type at 77 with pecking, then you'll be shocked with just a few weeks (if that!) of practice with the homerow. It's tough because you're teaching your fingers new muscle memory, but the long-term practice pays off over the short term. Good luck! And don't worry, that comment wasn't a waste of time. Thanks for leaving a thoughtful one!
if you have a short pinkies and don't want to move wrist or use other finger to push two buttons neighbouring consider modification of your keyboard layout exchanging placement of ;: button with pP button your pinky will lay exactly on p button by default without any fingers movement not sure how to fix q button but it's not used often at all maybe moving . button would make sense too as we use it more often and i would prefer space to be smaller and adding this under one thumb as right thumb confuses space and n quite often
I started touch typing after i stopped using my laptop for months, which is like 3 days ago. I started from 8 Wpm to 52 WPM with 92% accuracy. These tips works VERY well.
i do hunt and peck but i dont have to hunt for it i know where i need to put my finger to type and ive actually been using my left hands other fingers just not where im supposed to be using them and ive been using them at random times im going to try and do touch tying rn i can do touch typing with about 20wpm (i only practiced an hour so far) ill tell you how well i become in 1 weeks time mb if i forget
I average around 130 WPM currently, with a high score of 169 WPM on a short test. Now I'm currently hitting a wall. The problem is, I use my right index finger for the space bar. I've done this since I learned in elementary school. The teacher always corrected me, but it just felt so natural so I never put effort into switching. I do think I could type significantly faster using my thumb for the space bar and incorporating pinky fingers (I use all others). I can actually type 95-105 WPM using my thumb (quite surprised), with only a small handful of tests. Do you think it's worth re-training brain/muscles to use "correct" hand posture? My main snags are usually when I'm at a 150+ speed and the index finger can't switch from space bar to alphas fast enough and it snags an incorrect key. I'd love to hear anyone's input. Nice video!
Do I think it's worth "retraining" your muscle memory to not use your pointer finger for the space? Absolutely. Left or right thumb doesn't matter, but that pointer finger can do a lot of work in my experience. I would say "fix" that, or adjust that, and just give it a whirl for a few weeks. It'll be slower at first given the points I made in this video (to the best of my memory), but it'll be worth it in the long run. Check out keybr for some practice / tips on how to use the pointer finger itself. The question might not be about training yourself to use your thumb, but to use your pointer finger on non-spacebar keys. Just an alternate perspective. Lot of space to travel back and forth between the spacebar.
@@markbacon78 To add to my original statement; I do use my index finger on alpha keys. So I use it for space bar and alphas, hence the snags trying to switch between the two too quickly. Now for the update: The last 10 days or so I've swapped to using my right thumb for the space bar. The switch is actually not as hard as I thought it would be. My best is currently 124 WPM on a 60 second test. Not even much slower than my index spacebar speed! I definitely have a shorter pause between words now. It does feel awkward to have my index finger so close to my thumb when typing letters "m" and "n", but I'm slowly adjusting. You're definitely right. I think in a few months time I'll be hitting a consistent 150+ on longer tests utilizing thumb for the space bar. I'll definitely check out keybr! Thanks a ton for the references. Again, appreciate the video!!
Love this thank you so much. Currently also trying to override muscles memory for typing and I want to kill myself from the frustration. Reached typing speeds of up too 93 wpm and think if I type the proper correct way I can go back to 100 like in high school. But it’s so frustrating how slow I am!!!! 😭😭😭😭😞😞😞😞
I rarely like videos on yt because they're usually so mashed up and look like a mess, nice job on this vid, I'm impressed, I'm personally trying to increase to ~140wpm from 40wpm..
Ayy thanks! I’ve definitely got a long way to go but try to put in a good amount of time while scripting and editing to make the video actually flow well. Keep up consistent practice and you’ll e speeding up in no time! Thanks again for dropping by the vid 🔥
If you want to learn touch typing, stop looking at the keyboard as soon as you begin using the home row method. There's lots of free and cheap software which will train your fingers to hit the right keys without looking at the keyboard. Free ones: Kiran's Typing Tutor; RapidTyping (not the best imo). The best, but not free to use all the lessons: Typing Master. There's a free one which is very similar to Typing Master, called Typing Trainer. The one I like most for general practise is Stamina. Load in your own music files. Use txt files of books from Project Gutenberg for lots of practise. When you make an error it makes a variety of rude noises at you. This program is free.
Huh, I haven't heard of any of those! Cool! Stamina sounds quite cool. Another great resource (and a video I'm going to make on Soon™️) is typelit.io -- You can type up a bunch of books in the public domain
Mark. Great content. How do you practice/think about transitions between words? I often find myself slowing down between words and if I try to push myself to go faster I often displace the characters of the next word. Even through they are the correct characters but in the wrong order. How to fix/train that?
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video. In terms of transitioning between words, I think reading faster than you type (a word, two words, or even three words ahead) is something I do "naturally" at this point. They almost become combinations of sounds- I don't really think about what the word actually means, just the combination of letters that come before the "space bar". I talk about that a whole lot more in this vid here: ua-cam.com/video/68THxoS6OSE/v-deo.html I think the fact that you try and push yourself to go faster is good. When you displace characters, it shows you're jumping out of your comfort zone and now your main goal should be to work on accuracy at that pace. As that accuracy comes in, you will hopefully be able to maintain that speed... if that makes sense. Another thing could be to hone in on what combinations you're getting wrong most of the time and see if you can practice those. Sites like Monkeytype allow you to practice the words you get wrong in a test, so that might be good to check out. Hope that helps! Keep up the good work.
@@MrIlovebmw86, nothng i just chat on discord, basically the easiest way to learn is to just chat with people online, since you're not forcing yourself to type correctly
Awesome video mate. I went from 20WPM to 60WPM in 1 month. I just want to know with which finger should I type the character 'c'? Currently, I use the left index as it's comfortable but many website say that middle finger should be used for 'c'. Little help here please.
Love to hear it! In terms of what finger to use, use whatever is most comfortable for you and what you're used to. It's always good to experiment, but worth staying with what feels natural. Keep up the good work!
I am just recently deciding that I want to improve my typing, and I really tried to use my left middle finger. I can hit 35 wpm if using left index. I can hit about 13 wpm using the ''reccommended '' fingers. I think the trick is really to figure out what works for you. what is comfortable, and what is quick. I can barely get my middle finger on the c and I hate life when I try, so I'm running with it.
I'm coding professionally for over 20 years, and almost 30 overall. I type quickly, but I never used homerow method. I don't have to look at the keyboard anyway, obviously. But now I want to pick it up. It's my first week. And it's a road through hell. It's very tough to remap muscle memory after such long time. I bought a split keyboard to help me force at least some of the techniques. I hope I'll pick it up soon and not get fired for my current productivity...
Definitely a road through hell, especially since typing out code doesn't always parallel/work the same way as your speed increases haha. There's always a balance, thanks for dropping by the vid!
I like the video! It's more of a tips video... I was hoping you would go more in detail about the placement of the fingers on the keyboard 🙁 I really suck at the number row, but hopefully I can get better.
Thanks for dropping by! The website keybr.com has the placement of fingers more in-depth. The reason I didn't go through all that was because I really don't think the exact placements are necessary (and most definitely not an exact science). As long as you use most (if not all) of your fingers and find what is comfortable and what works for you, that's what counts! 🔥 And I appreciate the kirby vibe profile pic haha
i have the exact issue you do (or did now), left hand barely moves and is mostly correct. but i heavily underutilise my right hand, and it's basically just my index. guessing this spawned from gaming, left hand using the keyboard therefore it got used to using multiple fingers. but right hand on mouse, so i never learned that side of the muscle memory been wanting to fix this for ages, but kept putting it off bc it's years of muscle memory i'd be having to unlearn. but if i can average like 120-130, and get upto 150 wpm like this, ik i could go for like 180 down the line. def gonna try out keybr, seems to be the exact thing i've been looking for ty
Bear in mind that typing faster can also cause repetitive strain inury RSI, eye strain and back and leg muscles aches for long periods of time.. Ergonomic use is very important in posture and ratio to screen, keyboard and desk. Regular breaks is essential and will increase your productivity for whatever you are typing. I do a lot of transcription work, and even though I am fast at typing, accuracy is more important. Practice is the key essential when first starting to type. Knowing where each key is on a keyboard is the goal in not looking down as you type.
Love this advice ❤! Do You happen to have more advice on how to get past the 50wpm mark? I have been touch typing everyday for the last 7months for about 30mins a day using 4 different apps, my first goal was to keep up the routine for 90 days and once I past that I moved the goal to 1 year. I don't have to look at the key board at all even when editing my text. I went from 25wpm to 48wpm with an accuracy of 95+%. For a few months I was stuck in the 30s, last month is when I made the shift and hit 50-60wpm a few times, but Im consistently at 47+. I think it came from me giving myself really hard things to type.. using lots of punctuations. I feel like I just have to get used to spelling things really fast and advancing my vocabulary via typing and thats when I will make it past 70+wpm. But is there any other advice you could give that I should keep in mind while on this journey? thanks a ton!
if you have eye strain then it means you have vision problems or problem with blinking seeing is passive and effortless should not tire you at all! maybe only through blue light and saturated colours exposure whole time people overdo many things creating health issues where they don't exist sitting on chairs is one such thing as well as walking in shoes you can buy a yoga chair and changing body position every 10 minutes like native people do in nature your body is made to duck low with hands laying loosely on legs like kids on beach or like L in deathnote your feet walk perfectly fine without shoes and manipulation with hands is our main adaptation as species breaks are needed as doing something continuously isn't normal but it helps more for brain as modern people rush through life breathing too often to shallow and asking for premature death
Hey cool video. I am doing a one week progression to 60wpm. Currently its my 4th day, and im averaging 45 wpm and my record is 60 wpm. Im almost there and I have a 98 percent average of typing accuracy. I started at 12 wpm from the first day. Guys all im saying its possible to break records!!! TRY UR BEST AND BELIEVE IN IR SELF!! :)
@@Diveintowisdom-123 I actually practiced every day on type racer and eventually gained speed and accuracy, but you really need to focus on your accuracy when starting to type once you gain speed accuracy is really import for speed in order for you to be consistent, just ask me any question i will reply, enjoy ur typing journey :)

I can type 90 WPM with very high accuracy using just 3 fingers (both pointers and right index), but I definitely notice that I type significantly slower on certain words like "sweater" or "created" because even though I can type it with my eyes closed, I am still only using my left pointer finger to type all the letters on the left side. I absolutely hate the feeling of using my pinkies. But I think if I were to really practice, I could probably get over 130 wpm if I retrained my muscles and mastered the more efficient technique.
Definitely! I think homerow is just a structure- you don't have to follow it exactly. However, more fingers will definitely serve you in the end! Thanks for dropping by the vid
Using standard finger positioning is really useful if you want to type special characters. If you train properly the classical way it is taught is the best for mastering the entire keyboard. And if you are going to practice long into the future you cannot go wrong doing the right way.
@@lym3204 update 1 year later: I can touch type now with all my fingers 100 wpm. It's way more comfortable typing like this! Just takes some perseverance to get through the rough part where you're slower than you started :)
one problem i have is that on my mechanical keyboard, i tend to press BETWEEN the keys which slows me down and makes me mess up pretty bad. another problem is that sometimes i’ll have 70 wpm, then other times i’ll have 30 wpm. for example, in the morning i can’t type at ALL, but in the night time i can type pretty consistently.
That's pretty common I would think. I mean in the morning, if I was going to go for a sprint, I'd do much worse than in the afternoon. Keep up the practice and the proper 'spacing' will come to mind- I know that when I switch keyboards that middle-of-the-key thing happens a lot. Hope that helps!
@@markbacon78 yeah sometimes i can be 105 wpm to 55 wpm in same test but averages around 68 since most of it is in the 60s range this makes my consistancy terrible (65-75%)
i've been really into typing faster for a year now. around late august or early september my wpm was 40-45. every 3 months, it would increase by 10 wpm. my wpm in movember of 2021 was 50-55 wpm, 60-65 wpm in feburary of 2022, and 75-80 wpm in may of 2022. currently, my wpm is 85-95, but i feel like i can no longer improve if i don't learn home row. my goal by the end of 2022 is to type at 120 wpm, but i know that with the two fingers i type with, i would at most get to 110 wpm. :( also, i am finally going to in-person school after about 3 years! i seriously don't want to embarrass myself at school because i know that at this point most of my classmates in 7th grade have abondoned the 2 fingers or 3 fingers method of typing, so they'll definitely look at me weird when i show up in 8th grade typing faster than most of them with two fingers. 😅
I love this progress! I think that note of reaching a plateau- feeling like you can no longer improve- is a really important realization to hit. You may feel the same on the homerow, but that can be changed by introducing another finger, adjusting to something more comfortable, etc. Keep up the good work and practice!
i feel like im on a learning curve thats gonna stop gaining fast once i get to a certain point tbh cos i gained like 15-20 wpm in a week starting abit ahead from you (45-53wpm)
Ayy! Glad I caught you in the morning because I'm about to head to bed haha. Hope you enjoy the vid and that your day get's off to a blazingly great start! 🔥
my mom was taught typewriter writing at uni, and im here in uni now at 11 wpm trynna get good so i can get the most value out of this skill when i gotta write papers... why the frick isnt it taught in school anymore?? kinda jealous of yall, swedish has åäö to get through too! oof. but my last attempt of this last spring is still in my fingers! i got pretty ok (40wpm?) at like half the letters before giving up that time.
Ayyy that's awesome! Progress is a long game. I feel you on the accents to some degree- using international keyboards for French always slows down when I have to process the extra key for the accent 😔 Keep it up!
Are you out of your mind ....I'm asking u about how to place left hand fingers on keyboard while typing because the pressure exerted by my fingers sometimes becomes heavy and low...
i type with my thumb and index finger on my right hand and all my fingers except for my thumb on my left hand, i type 60wpm consistantly and can go up to 80 if i really try
Keep up the good work! Aim to make that 80 a consistent thing, so that when you really try you can get up to 90. Rinse and repeat, and you'll be in triple digits in no time. Thanks for dropping by the vid!
Doesn't really matter. Since i've made this video, I've consistently hit 170 +/- 10 wpm on every keyboard I've used. Bluetooth logitech keyboards for $40 or $90 mechanical keyboards with blue switches. I don't pay attention to it because it doesn't matter for me- aside from sound. If I had to choose, I'd just go with the logitech mx keyboard. Nice and portable, pretty comfy, I use it when my mechanical clicky one gets a bit annoying. Nothing will ever replace bluetooth keyboards in my heart lol
i used to do hunt and peck with 4-5 fingers for 2 decades was at a speed of 45 wpm avg started touch typing and regretted it honestly because I was back at 25 wpm and did not even realise that my old memory is gone because of the time I spend practicing touch typing. I am now after months of practice and reflection back to 37 wpm hopefully will get back to my usual 45 wpm and beyond in the future. I feel awfully slow and weird while typing certain key combinations having never had to use all my 9 fingers to type (I don't use the left thumb for anything at the moment)
recently started remapping, was used to point typing and i was averaging around 80 wpm. when i started with home row i was averaging around 12-30 wpm, have to admit it was really hard, accuracy went down drastically, but i am not going to give up and hopefully i can re wire my own brain. What i found i that the key is to just go slower
I have my fingers resting on q w e (with the left hand) and u i o (with the right hand) but when i type I use the left and right fingers with my thumb pressing spacebar and ring finger on backspace Would this still be hunt and peck? Also, is this efficient for getting faster? I don't do typing tests everyday, I do them once every like couple of months so that could be the reason for the thing below I find myself making a ton of mistakes and sometimes slowing down in speed at points and then slowly gaining up do i just need to practice more to get faster? or is it typing and using these 2 fingers that is slowing me down?
> Would this still be hunt and peck? No, I don't think so. Hunt and peck relates to hunting/looking around the keyboard and pecking relates to using your two pointer fingers to hit the keys. I think ring finger usage is fine- I also have trouble using my pinkies when I "should". > is this efficient for getting faster? Ironically, I have a video coming out about this topic later this week, but typing fast is really something encapsulated within itself. In other words, the only way to get faster at typing is to practice mindfully- and the best way to do that is with typing tests (whether it be monkeytype or 10fastfingers). If you're idly typing a lot, you won't see progress (at least not in a relatively short time frame) as you might expect to even though you're typing a lot. > rest of the comment If you're making mistakes, use sites like keybr or monkeytype to focus on improving them. The only way to get better is to practice, and in my opinion the best way to practice is using sites/applications gear toward typing. Slowing/speeding is natural, and I'd recommend looking at monkeytype for some cool graphs. All in all, try to use most of your fingers (as explained throughout this video) with relatively proper mapping, and the rest is up to you to mindfully practice all that. Thanks for the questions and the thoughtful comment! Keep up the good work 🔥
i remember when i was younger and i used to look up at my mom when she was typing and i thought to msyelf damn i hope i can do that one day that seems impossible. but now i can type well at touch typing and i think its important skill to learn. and its very fun to use and learn. i use dvorak layout so its comfi for me so yah thats meeeee
As someone who already uses the homerow method, I decided to try hunt and pecking for fun and my wpm went from 120+ to around 60s. however i am going to work on fixing my muscle memory as while i can type decently quick my fingers do move around a lot, leading to them getting kind of “twisted” which makes me need to pause or makes me mess up. hoping to clean up my act to speed up, but even with my imperfect, self-taught methodology the difference is still night and day which really says something!
I was at about 60/70 pecking now I really got into Mechanical keyboards and realized like what the heck , why am I not practicing to use these babies as far as they can go? it's ben absolute pain getting to 20wps and now even worse, I'm down to 40 at pecking since I'm trying to always do both at once. PAIN!
The pain won't last long! The learning curve is steep but short in my experience. Keep up the explicit practice and let it bleed into your daily life slowly. You'll be flying before you know it.
Unfortunately I'm not in New York haha; I think that hayday is kind of over but he wrote a book about all that. Fascinating read if you're into the history of things- I still owe him a video on that :\
I am literally having that annoying issue of not using all the keys but having the homerow muscle memory. I hate the fact that I took 6 months to come to this with 65 WPM but now I have to remap my fingers all over again :")
I'm sure some of the progress will carry over! Not all is lost, haha. Done it once, now you get to do it again... and you're not starting from zero. You got this!
Just go with whatever is comfortable for you at the end of the day. For CTRL I almost always use my pinky, for LSHIFT I almost always use my left ring finger, and for L-ALT I almost use my middle finger, though I mostly use the right alt key I think. CTRL + ALT + DEL is left pinky, left middle, right middle respectively. Try things and figure out what works for you. Just because it works for me or is what I do doesn't mean it's right or the best way. Best o luck!
I just can’t get my fingers to stay on the home buttons, my brain works faster than my fingers can follow. I type quickly anyway, but it quickly gets messy when I’m typing a lot on a computer keyboard. On my phone now, I type fast asf but it’s two thumbs not hard anyway. I’m just struggling to make my fingers stay on the home keys and return to them when I’m typing it’s killing me.
Don't try and stick TOO closely to the homerow method. Do what fits your needs best and is most comfortable for you. Nonetheless, it will come with practice!
Hi mark, I just switched to home row before 4 days, I used to type with my index fingers only and I was able to reach 95WPM, but after switching To home row I reached 40WPM in my first day, now I average 60, and I’ve already hit the 70’s
I use something in-between those two styles? Because of gaming, my left hand fingers are placed on WAD (WASD movement keys), shift, and space. While my right hand fingers are placed at KOP] and space (kind of like a horizontal rod smoothly bend downwards from the left side)
I haven't heard people placed around KOP] but I love it! I think just having those resting places is hood, since they're on diff sides of the keyboard. Is that a Starcraft kind of layout? Thansk for sharing!
Thanks for helpful video, I now i can type with up to 45rpm usually but I am struggling with hitting the wrong keys while typing in the flow. What should I do?
I ve been typing with no finger rule (= hunt and peck) for 20 years. And my average is 100 wpm. I can definitely say that, If you are a boomer as I am, touch-typing takes aaaaaages to master and going about 150 WPM. It s so painful process as a fast hunt & pecker. Fuck touch-typing. Stick with which works best for you.
I agree! Stick with what works best. Unless you want to improve in a particular regard. Doesn't mean you can't jump to an opportunity to do something that's generally more efficient.
we learned this in around 3rd grade but i never really picked up anything that time and honestly it kinda caught up to me since im in high school and i need to write research papers now
@@markbacon78 There has been some progress and your video has definitely helped I went from a speed of 70 to 90 wpm with 77% accuracy with how I used to type to about 100 to 110 wpm 98% accuracy when touch typing
Because at that point, just do what is comfortable. There's no point in following the home row that strictly. As for exercises, pick a site mentioned in this video- or in my other video "The BEST Typing Practice Websites"- and practice. There's no "exercises" or "drills" because the websites help you work on that. Sometimes it isn't about the method, but it's about the tool. And there are plenty of typing websites that are a huge help. Best of luck!
Jesus. When I’m close to 100% accuracy I’m in the mid-upper 40’s on average :( And I use all ten fingers with proper finger mapping. Even though C, B and Y feel weird and slow. I suck at spelling though, so that probably doesn’t help. I want to be A LOT faster! Especially with Programming syntax(that’s Way slower FYI). I feel like I’m at a plateau and have been forever. Not finding a lot of specific help for me online:( Any ideas?
I can relate with it all! The idea that I'd primarily have for you is to just keep up the practice- improvement is a long game, especially with stuff like this. You're at a great spot and if you have the proper mapping, it's all about touch typing and practice from here. I made an entire video on the concept of pushing past a plateau you can find here: ua-cam.com/video/68THxoS6OSE/v-deo.html (ideas are presented much more clearly haha). Also, as a CS student myself, I can totally relate with the programming thing! I talk about the website speedtyper.dev in this video here (ua-cam.com/video/WumzapbxgI8/v-deo.html) but all it is is going over the website haha. Hopefully the strange characters can help! All in all, practice consistently, push your speed, and remember that progress is a long game- all elaborated on in the first video link, but do keep that in mind! Thanks for dropping by the vid and keep up the good work 🔥
@@markbacon78 Holy crap man! Thanks for the lighting fast response and with such detail and advice!!! You got yourself a new Sub my friend! Keep up the great content:) Happy Hacking Brother Man!
Hi Mark, I am quite new to touch typing and I was just wondering, in your opinion, which finger (ring or pinky) is best to type letter P? Although I currently use my pinky to type P, I feel that ring finger might be better as it does not require me to move my hand to type P. The other thing is that pinky is already used to type so many special characters, backspace, shift and enter key.
Heya! I think it's up to you. I use my ring finger for 'P', but that's mainly because my right pinky has sort of become "dedicated" to the special characters on the side; " [ ] { } etc. I can also spread my fingers far enough that it doesn't tend to take too much away when I use my ring finger. I would try both and see if there's one that makes more sense for you!
Today is my forth day converting to touch typing and I'm really frustrated right now, sometimes I feel I won't be able to do it. But I will keep trying, no give up here.
That's the vibe! Progress is a long game and chances are you won't notice the progress at first. It's really hard to change your muscle memory but you've taken the most important step of starting. Keep up the good work and let me know how it goes! 🔥
You don't have to get it 100% correct- the main thing is to use more fingers. Plus, it's a matter of muscle memory! Practice practice practice. Hopefully you got something from the vid!
Agh I know the feel haha. Conscientously practice whilst you do it and you'll be able to do both- just takes time! You got this- keep up the good work 🔥
Mark Bacon Will someone forget how to touch type if they don't touch type for a long time. Like if they actually began to hunt and pecking while typing.
I broke my hand, it's in a cast I typed quite fast, it wasn't a serious break, I can still move my fingers with full strength, but my pinky finger is limited to space.
I'm sorry to hear that! Glad it wasn't too bad a break though. Honestly I barely use my pinky haha, but do what works for you and what feels most comfortable at the end of the day. Thanks for dropping by the video!
Bro I dont have enough dexterity memory for homerow which sucks... but instead i type with my thumbs, forefingers, and middle fingers in VERY quick 3-5 key burst and for me this has been very effective as a replacement
Which finger do you use for parenthesis ? I feel middle finger for - ( and ring finger for - ) is easier to reach. When using ring finger and pinky finger for parenthesis, I have to twist my hand. I'm a beginner at touch typing and my average speed is 35-40 wpm now.
Yea, I use those two or ring finger + pinky. Do whatever is comfortable for you. Try new things but stick with what ends up working the best. At some point it ends up being subjective. Good luck, and happy practicing!
There was a study between people trained w typing courses vs people who learned on their own. There was no difference in WPM. My question is what would happen to self taught people that learn key mapping w courses. Would that affect their WPM and by how much???
I haven't used courses to learn key mapping as far as I know, maybe something in middle school. I don't think the difference is all that great. Homerow and key mapping is a guide more than anything- I certainly don't stick to homerow to this day and probably over-emphasized it in this video.
Honestly I used only two fingers on my right hand for the longest time haha. I'm sure if you wire yourself to use more fingers you'll be able to pick up your speed, but if you don't need it and it's comfortable... I say keep doing you! Thanks for dropping by the vid 🔥
I just started learning to touch type.. Im able to use the keys for my index and middle finger in just a few hours.. However, its been days and my ring and pinky finger is so hard to move..
I used to use hunt and peck and got a average wpm of 45. Not great. Practiced touch typing for a month with home row method 1 week- 12 wpm (was going slow to make sure my fingers went to the correct letters) 2 week- 24 wpm 3 week-32 wpm 4 week- 47 wpm I’d say my results are decent, 2 more weeks have passed since my one month of trying to learn touch typing, I’m now at 65 Which is good in my opinion, but by the end of another month I hope to reach 90+ wish me luck! But honestly, I recommend learning to touch type with home row. Trust me I have been using hunt and peck for 6+ years (I’m 13 rn) And while it’s comfortable, I was never able to get as fast as I’d like. Now I can type faster with less strain on my hands since I don’t need to look at my keyboard every few seconds and move my entire wrist/arm.
Couldn't agree more- especially on the strain part! Also, while 47 might be "decent", I'd say that nearly quadrupling your speed in a month is wonderful progress- keep that up! It's good to never settle for where you get, because being satisfied can kill progress, but don't forget to pat your back every so often :) Thanks for dropping by the vid! I love seeing progress updates 🔥
@@markbacon78 thanks! I’ll be sure to update more too, I wanna encourage people and tell them it’s worth it. It may be frustrating at times, and breaks are always a good thing but keep going! Thanks for inspiring me to do this too, these tips helped
I don't know if you will be able to answer this but I really appreciate if you could. Is correct finger placement important? Is it bad to use multiple fingers for one key? For example, I use all 10 fingers, but I hit the "u" key at times with my index finger and at other times I hit it with my middle finger. Is this bad?
I think that's largely dependent on you and what you find comfortable. Don't be afraid to experiment, but over time you'll find what works for you. For example, If you use the same finger for 'u' and 'i', it will be an issue if you need to move your hand from where it is when you hit 'i' with the pointer finger (which matters if you try to type much faster, as that small hand movement can make a big different). However, for words like "fruit", it's advantageous to use your pointer finger for 'u' and middle finger for 'i'. That being said, it's largely context dependent. The short answer to your question is no, I don't think it's bad. The longer answer is that I think it's actually a good thing, as long as when you change up your finger corresponding to certain situations (for example, in typing "situation" I use middle finger for both 'i' and 'u', but for "fruit", I use middle for 'u' and ring for 'i' just as a subconscious decision).
I don't find anything useful than just learning to touch typing and practicing on your own ways consistently I never had to watch any videos to improve my speed. Hardly spent 6 hours on monkeytype and ~5 hours on typeracer. No hate but getting too much theoretical is kind of useless when it comes to typing My speed: 2021: 49-50 WPM 2022: 58-70 WPM 2023: 80-102 WPM 2024: 110-137 WPM All it took was 15-20 days of month typing for 15-20 minutes only
Totally agreed. A lot of these methods are some kind of hindsight, but also a lot of people are just watching these and hearing about "touch typing" or "home row" for the first time; not considering the unconscious habits they built up. I also made a video about how typing fast is kind of useless at some point though; like I don't code faster than 80wpm- and when it's at 80, it doesn't last long because then i need to pause and think anyway. Similar notion with writing all sorts. Consistent practice and just doing it is... the key to improving at anything, really. I couldn't agree more- well done on the consistency!
My pinkies are so weak. Whenever I try to type with pinkies, my ring fingers hit their keys. I have to rotate whole hand to type p. Also B and Y are harder to register in memory. They jumble with V and U,T
Yea the pinkies are tough, but the more you use them (and stretch them) the better you'll become over time! Takes a lot of conscious effort for a while, but it'll get easier without you realizing it. Thanks for dropping by the vid!
I used to be able to type really fast at about 180 wpm. But then I got depression, and my brain was just so lazy that I started to develop bad typing habits which made me slower
I was getting fast back in 2020 and then nunbers were introduced and it kept messing me up. When I wanted to type letters on the top row I would hit numbers and vice versa. I started again and am in the 50s but my fingers twitch a lot causing typos 🤣. Hard not to give up when that happens haha. It was my first time learning too, I don't know where I was when everyone learned in school.
You're welcome for the suggestions and I hope you both got some use from the video! I just released a new video on typing special characters if you're curious, but all in all it just comes down to practice. Keep it up and you'll be beating your records in no time 🔥

This is an underrated channel. I hope I learn this ...
Haha, thank you! Glad you enjoyed. Get some practice in and you'll get there in no time 🔥
just because of some few videos like this i watched, my average is 130 wpm and i can burst as quickly as 150-210. the only issue is that you have to adapt with switching to more fingers, that's the hard part. i keep coming back to this video for some reason, but i pretty much have to because this is one of the things that still keeps me going.
You're most welcome! The dip is expected, but keep up the good work 🔥
just started with keybr , monkeytype and typeracer couple of days ago and im progressing pretty fast hardest part was / is pinky but it took me around 6 hours of actively typing in keybr to get use to using them , what i want to say is dont be scared of trying to learn it doesnt need to be months until you get to you previous speed im around 50 WPM at this moment.

Also, this video is the only one I can remember which says that it's normal for people to be really slow when they first start touch typing and then they get faster later, which really helped after I tried a typing test using touch typing and got 22WPM and felt like I was wasting my time
also I used pecking to type this comment
I'm so glad you connected with the video in that way! Hopefully more typing to come, but all in all I intend to keep that attitude in my videos in general haha. If you can type at 77 with pecking, then you'll be shocked with just a few weeks (if that!) of practice with the homerow. It's tough because you're teaching your fingers new muscle memory, but the long-term practice pays off over the short term. Good luck!
And don't worry, that comment wasn't a waste of time. Thanks for leaving a thoughtful one!
if you have a short pinkies and don't want to move wrist or use other finger to push two buttons neighbouring consider modification
of your keyboard layout exchanging placement of ;: button with pP button
your pinky will lay exactly on p button by default without any fingers movement
not sure how to fix q button but it's not used often at all maybe moving . button would make sense too as we use it more often
and i would prefer space to be smaller and adding this under one thumb as right thumb confuses space and n quite often
I hope the progress is going well! The practice will be slower for a little while but ultimately I think it is worth it in the long run :D
peak typing content, very nice
I talk about that a whole lot more in this vid here: ua-cam.com/video/68THxoS6OSE/v-deo.html
I think the fact that you try and push yourself to go faster is good.

I am having this same problem. I use my left index finger to type the c
I was hoping you would go more in detail about the placement of the fingers on the keyboard 🙁
I really suck at the number row, but hopefully I can get better.
@@markbacon78 Cool, thank! 😃
i have the exact issue you do (or did now), left hand barely moves and is mostly correct. but i heavily underutilise my right hand, and it's basically just my index. guessing this spawned from gaming, left hand using the keyboard therefore it got used to using multiple fingers. but right hand on mouse, so i never learned that side of the muscle memory
been wanting to fix this for ages, but kept putting it off bc it's years of muscle memory i'd be having to unlearn. but if i can average like 120-130, and get upto 150 wpm like this, ik i could go for like 180 down the line. def gonna try out keybr, seems to be the exact thing i've been looking for ty
But is there any other advice you could give that I should keep in mind while on this journey? thanks a ton!
if you have eye strain then it means you have vision problems or problem with blinking
seeing is passive and effortless
should not tire you at all!
maybe only through blue light and saturated colours exposure whole time
people overdo many things creating health issues where they don't exist
sitting on chairs is one such thing as well as walking in shoes
you can buy a yoga chair and changing body position every 10 minutes
like native people do in nature
your body is made to duck low with hands laying loosely on legs like kids on beach
or like L in deathnote
your feet walk perfectly fine without shoes
and manipulation with hands is our main adaptation as species
breaks are needed as doing something continuously isn't normal but it helps more for brain
as modern people rush through life breathing too often to shallow and asking for premature death
what about the the key in the same row like n and y? how can I type faster between these 2 keys?

How's it going now?
Hey cool video. I am doing a one week progression to 60wpm. Currently its my 4th day, and im averaging 45 wpm and my record is 60 wpm. Im almost there and I have a 98 percent average of typing accuracy. I started at 12 wpm from the first day. Guys all im saying its possible to break records!!! TRY UR BEST AND BELIEVE IN IR SELF!! :)
HEY HEY THERE IT IS! Love the optimism and the great work- keep it up! 🔥
MrZapped what did you do ? to progress from12wpm to 60?

@@Requinix17 Wow, skies the limit now. The next year is going to be good for you.
one problem i have is that on my mechanical keyboard, i tend to press BETWEEN the keys which slows me down and makes me mess up pretty bad. another problem is that sometimes i’ll have 70 wpm, then other times i’ll have 30 wpm. for example, in the morning i can’t type at ALL, but in the night time i can type pretty consistently.
That's pretty common I would think. I mean in the morning, if I was going to go for a sprint, I'd do much worse than in the afternoon. Keep up the practice and the proper 'spacing' will come to mind- I know that when I switch keyboards that middle-of-the-key thing happens a lot. Hope that helps!
thanks, i just gotta keep practicing
@@markbacon78 yeah sometimes i can be 105 wpm to 55 wpm in same test but averages around 68 since most of it is in the 60s range
this makes my consistancy terrible (65-75%)

Super glad to hear it! Keep up the good work
i've been really into typing faster for a year now. around late august or early september my wpm was 40-45. every 3 months, it would increase by 10 wpm. my wpm in movember of 2021 was 50-55 wpm, 60-65 wpm in feburary of 2022, and 75-80 wpm in may of 2022. currently, my wpm is 85-95, but i feel like i can no longer improve if i don't learn home row. my goal by the end of 2022 is to type at 120 wpm, but i know that with the two fingers i type with, i would at most get to 110 wpm.
@@QuandaleDingle-ji2tj yeah there's weeks like that where i improve 10 wpm and then dunk 10 wpm because i just had a lucky week before.

my mom was taught typewriter writing at uni, and im here in uni now at 11 wpm trynna get good so i can get the most value out of this skill when i gotta write papers...
why the frick isnt it taught in school anymore??
kinda jealous of yall, swedish has åäö to get through too! oof. but my last attempt of this last spring is still in my fingers! i got pretty ok (40wpm?) at like half the letters before giving up that time.
Ayyy that's awesome! Progress is a long game. I feel you on the accents to some degree- using international keyboards for French always slows down when I have to process the extra key for the accent 😔 Keep it up!
Are you out of your mind ....I'm asking u about how to place left hand fingers on keyboard while typing because the pressure exerted by my fingers sometimes becomes heavy and low...
uncertain who’s out of who’s mind haha. assuming it’s for me, i usually hover my hand above the keyboard snd pressure is minimal on the keys
I'm on day five. It's like learning how to walk again. Hopefully muscle memory takes over sooner than later because this is excruciating.
It may feel like wasted time now, but it'll become treasured time before you realize it!
i type with my thumb and index finger on my right hand and all my fingers except for my thumb on my left hand, i type 60wpm consistantly and can go up to 80 if i really try
Keep up the good work! Aim to make that 80 a consistent thing, so that when you really try you can get up to 90. Rinse and repeat, and you'll be in triple digits in no time. Thanks for dropping by the vid!
What is the keyboard you are using, key types, caps, brands you like. And I think you are one of the Very Fastest keyboarders I have seen.
Nothing will ever replace bluetooth keyboards in my heart lol
i used to do hunt and peck with 4-5 fingers for 2 decades was at a speed of 45 wpm avg
started touch typing and regretted it honestly because I was back at 25 wpm and did not even realise that my old memory is gone because of the time I spend practicing touch typing.
I have my fingers resting on q w e (with the left hand) and u i o (with the right hand) but when i type I use the left and right fingers with my thumb pressing spacebar and ring finger on backspace
Would this still be hunt and peck?
Also, is this efficient for getting faster? I don't do typing tests everyday, I do them once every like couple of months so that could be the reason for the thing below
I find myself making a ton of mistakes and sometimes slowing down in speed at points and then slowly gaining up
do i just need to practice more to get faster? or is it typing and using these 2 fingers that is slowing me down?
If you're idly typing a lot, you won't see progress (at least not in a relatively short time frame) as you might expect to even though you're typing a lot.
> rest of the comment
If you're making mistakes, use sites like keybr or monkeytype to focus on improving them.

It's because you're a truly dedicated fan, kkirlin07.
Keep it up! :D
Great video, just started to learn to type, got a month 18wpm👍🏻

Unfortunately I'm not in New York haha; I think that hayday is kind of over but he wrote a book about all that. Fascinating read if you're into the history of things- I still owe him a video on that :\
I am literally having that annoying issue of not using all the keys but having the homerow muscle memory. I hate the fact that I took 6 months to come to this with 65 WPM but now I have to remap my fingers all over again :")
I'm sure some of the progress will carry over! Not all is lost, haha. Done it once, now you get to do it again... and you're not starting from zero. You got this!
Thanks bro this really frickin helped

i just want to know your finger placement while you use keyboard shortcut (ex: ctrl + shift + alt + s) 😑.
Everytime I tried to homerow switch my finger overlap each other and drop to like 5 wpm and than I have my right hand going across the keyboard
I find hitting z with my pinky incredibly hard cause my fingers are long and it just feels uncomfortable and slow
Yup me too!
Use ring finger for Z
Cheers! I am currently on 50wpm but I will continue to work on these damn pinkies.
Ayyy they're tricky but you got this! Thanks for dropping by 🔥
I just can’t get my fingers to stay on the home buttons, my brain works faster than my fingers can follow.
That's awesome! Keep up the good work and you'll be in triple digits in no time 🥳 Progress is all about the long game and I love to hear it!
Thats insane that you were able to reach that high with only 2 fingers
Great progress! I think it's just a matter of keeping up the practice, and mindfully practicing where you might falter more.
Doesn't mean you can't jump to an opportunity to do something that's generally more efficient.

my current typing style is weird. i do touch typing on my left hand and i do hunt n pack on my right hand
still searching for a video about control keys, function keys touch typing finger mappings, exercises... why nothing on youtube??

How many typing methods are there? I thought the majority of people use touch-typing already as opposed to pecking.
As far as I know it's only really the two "methods". It comes down to keyboard layout, what fingers you use for what keys, etc.
Hi Mark,
I am quite new to touch typing and I was just wondering, in your opinion, which finger (ring or pinky) is best to type letter P? Although I currently use my pinky to type P, I feel that ring finger might be better as it does not require me to move my hand to type P. The other thing is that pinky is already used to type so many special characters, backspace, shift and enter key.
I also use my ring finger for "P"
Heya! I think it's up to you. I use my ring finger for 'P', but that's mainly because my right pinky has sort of become "dedicated" to the special characters on the side; " [ ] { } etc. I can also spread my fingers far enough that it doesn't tend to take too much away when I use my ring finger. I would try both and see if there's one that makes more sense for you!
im trying to get id of hunting and pecking but i use like most of my finger while doing it
If you already use most of your fingers, just work on the "no more hunting" part :D
thank you very much, i want a simple method of practicing while sitting watching tv or somthing
You're welcome- best of luck! Could be fun to try and type up what is being said on the TV as well.
Today is my forth day converting to touch typing and I'm really frustrated right now, sometimes I feel I won't be able to do it. But I will keep trying, no give up here.

@@markbacon78 thank you so much for the encouragement. I'm making progress, step by step.

You don't have to get it 100% correct- the main thing is to use more fingers. Plus, it's a matter of muscle memory! Practice practice practice. Hopefully you got something from the vid!
I'm trying to use the home row method but my left hand keeps doing the standard WASD strokes from gaming and it's driving me nuts
Just like any other skill it can fade, but I think it can come back- just like riding a bike!

I typed quite fast, it wasn't a serious break, I can still move my fingers with full strength, but my pinky finger is limited to space.
If it works it works! Dexterity definitely comes with time and pracice, all in the long game. Keep up the good work! :D
i love how people make such interesting videos

Absolutely! Keep up the practice and you'll get there 🔥 Thanks for dropping by!
Homerow and key mapping is a guide more than anything- I certainly don't stick to homerow to this day and probably over-emphasized it in this video.
am i wierd because i use all my left hand fingers but only the pointer on my other
Honestly I used only two fingers on my right hand for the longest time haha.

It starts tough, but it gets easier. You just have to keep doing it. Keep it up!
I used to use hunt and peck and got a average wpm of 45. Not great. Practiced touch typing for a month with home row method
1 week- 12 wpm (was going slow to make sure my fingers went to the correct letters)
2 week- 24 wpm
3 week-32 wpm
4 week- 47 wpm
I’d say my results are decent, 2 more weeks have passed since my one month of trying to learn touch typing, I’m now at 65
Which is good in my opinion, but by the end of another month I hope to reach 90+ wish me luck!
But honestly, I recommend learning to touch type with home row. Trust me I have been using hunt and peck for 6+ years (I’m 13 rn)
And while it’s comfortable, I was never able to get as fast as I’d like.
No hate but getting too much theoretical is kind of useless when it comes to typing
My speed:
2021: 49-50 WPM
2022: 58-70 WPM
2023: 80-102 WPM
2024: 110-137 WPM
All it took was 15-20 days of month typing for 15-20 minutes only
Totally agreed.

Hey, that’s pretty heavy. Definitely a difficult thing to go through, but not impossible :)
How are you doing now?
I've been practicing touch typing for nearly a week and my speed is like 70 wpm
Thanks for the suggestions
I was getting fast back in 2020 and then nunbers were introduced and it kept messing me up. When I wanted to type letters on the top row I would hit numbers and vice versa. I started again and am in the 50s but my fingers twitch a lot causing typos 🤣. Hard not to give up when that happens haha. It was my first time learning too, I don't know where I was when everyone learned in school.
You're welcome for the suggestions and I hope you both got some use from the video! I just released a new video on typing special characters if you're curious, but all in all it just comes down to practice. Keep it up and you'll be beating your records in no time 🔥
What is touch typing? I’m just now learning how to type
@@TheNeeuqnozama well....touch typing is basically a trick which helps us to type without seeing the keyboard
When we practice touch typing we'll be able to type fast even without seeing the keys on the keyboard
You can start practicing on any app or website
@@arnachatterjee91 thank you, I’m having problems remember the keys and I keep looking down but I’m really new an having to use a keyboard consistently so I’ll look into it an practice
I actually don't have a good accuracy but still I tried and for some reason it slowed me down. I even did more wpm hunt and pecking than working on accuracy for at least 2 months!
