Duolingo's REAL Goal (It's NOT About Being a Language Learning Platform)
As a human, I love Duolingo and what it stands for. As an adamant language learner, a lot of things come into question.
This video comes from a place of love for Duolingo and for language learning. And a disposition toward a world engineered to take our attention away from us. Duolingo gets hate because people look at it incorrectly. Thus, I believe that we need to change our perspective on it.

    • @markbacon78
      @markbacon78 2 дні тому

      I'm super glad to hear it was insightful! I'm trying to put together another Todoist video but I'm uncertain- let me know if anything comes up for you. I love Todoist because it has such a strong foundation that it really can become as simple (or as complex) as you want/need it to be.

    • @chillwavemusic5024
      @chillwavemusic5024 2 дні тому

      @@markbacon78 sure. It would be interesting to see how people use Todoist - which system applying? Time blocking? Filters? Tags? Personally for me is a little bit tricky to organize and manage more than couple of project simultaneously: if I have dozens of tasks, to review and control them everyday

    • @chillwavemusic5024
      @chillwavemusic5024 2 дні тому

      And thank you a lot again! The most important that your review is real - you show real tasks and project in real usage. A lot of so called productivity bloggers don’t really use app in real life, they only create a project to “make a video” “create a vlog” etc )))

    • @markbacon78
      @markbacon78 День тому

      Hmm, I like the callout to managing projects simultaneously. Reviewing them is something I think I've built a habit of over the last 8 years. A great point of focus I think!

    • @markbacon78
      @markbacon78 День тому

      Yea; sometimes it can be thought of as easier to make a point- especially when you don't have to look at something as complex- but showing it in reality is something I like to do. Though I do hide some stuff to make it "less to look at". Throwing this comment chain into my notes- much appreciated feedback! 🔥

    Lessagooo I'm in a vid lol I think Duo sticks too much with the English to Japanese meanings of sentences. Tap the eng to jp or vice versa, as any of the the legit language learning methodologies aims for you to start thinking in the target language, making you fly with your own wings instead of trying to use the native language and do a word for word translation. Duo is like the 'gateway drug' to language learning, just like all the 'learn to code in 15 mins and make six figs' apps and vids out there, good for catching beginners but if you're trying to lock in and take it serious, it's time to move on to more pro resources and actually love the grid and hours of pain *insert Sisyphus pic here*.

    • @markbacon78

    The free version frustrates me sometimes because you can't do mainstream lessons after you run out of hearts. You either spend gems or do 5 more practice lessons. And we could use some grammar lessons in the courses. Still have my 443 days streak tho lol

    • @markbacon78
      @markbacon78 3 дні тому

      Yea learning about grammar feels like it has helped me pick up Japanese… a little quicker, but because I’ve understood things more deeply. And imo adults could really benefit there, but alas Duolingo yoinked their small articles for that / don’t have it for less popular langs. Tbh the streaks always remain a small flex, power through. Onwards!! 🔥

      I've been using Go for a little while now- was one of the primary resources at my last job. My go-to learning for Go has just been the docs. That is to say, "how did you learn building the server" is just... I knew Go syntax and I looked at the HTTP docs. As for how I started learning Go- bitfieldconsulting.com/posts/commandments I'd recommend bitfieldconsulting's posts in general. If you're a book person, Head First Go was a good way to just get coding right off the bat, but I'd only recommend that if you really need something structured. Best way to go is just to build something -> look up what you need as you go (e.g. how I found that post about the chi router) -> rinse and repeat. Hopefully that helps! Thanks for joining along the ride :D

    • @markbacon78
      @markbacon78 10 днів тому

      As for implementing OAuth, I was just doing google searches and literally learned by doing it for this service. Not sure if I mentioned this explicitly, but it took me a good 2-3 hours of head bashing for like... 15 lines of code to get it working. As for "this database stuff" I'd recommend just learning the the basic functions of databases (either mysql or mongo a good place to start). Make a small project (which is how this little expense tool started) and look up things as you need go

    i used to do hunt and peck with 4-5 fingers for 2 decades was at a speed of 45 wpm avg started touch typing and regretted it honestly because I was back at 25 wpm and did not even realise that my old memory is gone because of the time I spend practicing touch typing. I am now after months of practice and reflection back to 37 wpm hopefully will get back to my usual 45 wpm and beyond in the future. I feel awfully slow and weird while typing certain key combinations having never had to use all my 9 fingers to type (I don't use the left thumb for anything at the moment)

    *Important context info for everyone seeing:* When he used monkeytype, he tested in "English" which means only 100 of the most used words and without symbols or numbers. And of top of that he is using 30 seconds test which it's not showing your average speed, it's only a speed burst in 30 seconds. When you train in this category you're only training those 100 words, that's why people can get so good, but if you tested in a normal English redaction, with numbers, symbols and 2 minutes, you would get a much lower and realistic velocity(WPM). Even when he shows his velocity in a coding test, he only does tests of less than 20 seconds, so again it's not a realistic average velocity, probably he is only showing you the best results. If he would have made a 1 minute test coding, again, the wpm would be much realistic. I feel people are cheating by not mentioning this when they show you their WPMs. They will say "I can type at 170wpm" when that's only true for their best time in a short bust in a very small group of 100 words that they have practiced specifically and without symbols or numbers. So, in conclusion: To really know the normal typing speed of someone or yourself, test with the same things you want to measure. For example, if you want to test your normal writing speed, test with English long texts (meaning, tons of different daily words and basic punctuation symbols, not just 100 words without symbols) which are at least one minute long to write and look at the average, not only your best speed. Remember that, for ego reasons, most speed typers always show only their WPM on short test and with few words so they can show you a higher number. So be careful comparing yourself with those unrealistic results. There you go, hope that info is helpful✨

    • @markbacon78

      Can you link a video with them? And tag me in the response so I get notified about it. There are three you could be talking about (the black frames, blue frames, or red frames). I remember the black frames were Oakley, I don't remember the blue frames, but I still have the red frames back home (I won't be back until Aug 6th but I'll do my best to look at them if those are the ones). As for the latter part- any time I've chosen glasses I just go into a store for my eye appointment and if I feel like I need new glasses I pick a pair I like at the time. They are prescription (I am near-sighted) so they are necessary for my eyesight at long distances.

    Out of Keyblaze, Monkeytype and Keytbr, which is best for beginners?

      Try them all and see what you like best! I think keybr is the most structured, Monkeytype is the most flexible. I've never used Keyblaze

    I started touch typing after i stopped using my laptop for months, which is like 3 days ago. I started from 8 Wpm to 52 WPM with 92% accuracy. These tips works VERY well.

    What is the keyboard you are using, key types, caps, brands you like. And I think you are one of the Very Fastest keyboarders I have seen.

      Doesn't really matter. Since i've made this video, I've consistently hit 170 +/- 10 wpm on every keyboard I've used. Bluetooth logitech keyboards for $40 or $90 mechanical keyboards with blue switches. I don't pay attention to it because it doesn't matter for me- aside from sound. If I had to choose, I'd just go with the logitech mx keyboard. Nice and portable, pretty comfy, I use it when my mechanical clicky one gets a bit annoying. Nothing will ever replace bluetooth keyboards in my heart lol

      Thanks for dropping by the vid! Glad you enjoyed. In my last job it was a lot of Golang and Python, mainly backend services. The next development-related video I upload will likely be around a web app I'm building; I used React in the past but learning VueJS now with some other stuff tossed in there. Game dev, full stack web development, servers. That's kinda the summation I think? I started by making Minecraft plugins in Java though

      @@markbacon78 Also, I'm trying to get into simulation making with Python. I just went through a burnout phase, but I've come back with a different mindset and now I want to do simulations for fun. I was wondering if there are any libraries or tools that could be associated with what I want to start doing. What I mean by simulations is like water physics and all that. (IN 2d) I'm asking you because I couldn't find anything that seemed relatively useful

      Nothing immediately comes to mind; I never used those kinds of libraries when I worked with Python. Numpy is definitely a good one for fast calculations though. If you can find some kind of graphics library (I know of one called Turtle, but I'm not sure if it's good for simulation speed presentation) and learn the math behind those things,t hat might be a good way to really learn about simulations from the ground up. At the end of the day, the graphics are just drawing what the data says- comes back to that whole idea of everything being an illusion haha. Calculation coordinates of colliding objects and just drawing those coordinates in a graphics library would be where I would start, at least! Unfortunately no specific ones come to mind.

      I've never used pygame; I would look into other graphics libraries. Pygame is a game engine from what I understand; probably overkill for drawing simulations but may also have some built-in "physics" modules you can use
